Abstract:We study quantum transport in a quasiperiodic Aubry-André-Harper (AAH) model induced by the coupling of the system to a Markovian heat bath. We find that coupling the heat bath locally does not affect transport in the delocalized and critical phases, while it induces logarithmic transport in the localized phase. Increasing the number of coupled sites at the central region introduces a transient diffusive regime, which crosses over to logarithmic transport in the localized phase and in the delocalized regime to ballistic transport. On the other hand, when the heat bath is coupled to equally spaced sites of the system, we observe a crossover from ballistic and logarithmic transport to diffusion in the delocalized and localized regimes, respectively. We propose a classical master equation, which captures our numerical observations for both coupling configurations on a qualitative level and for some parameters, even on a quantitative level. Using the classical picture, we show that the crossover to diffusion occurs at a time that increases exponentially with the spacing between the coupled sites, and the resulting diffusion constant decreases exponentially with the spacing.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to explore the quantum transport phenomena induced by coupling with a Markovian heat bath in the Aubry - André - Harper (AAH) model. Specifically, the researchers focus on how the heat - bath coupling affects the transport characteristics of the AAH model in different phases, including the localized phase, the critical phase, and the delocalized phase. The main problems can be summarized as follows: 1. **Influence of local coupling of the heat bath**: - It is found that in the delocalized and critical phases, the locally coupled heat bath has no significant influence on the transport properties. - However, in the localized phase, the locally coupled heat bath will induce logarithmic transport. 2. **Coupling of the heat bath within a finite region**: - When the heat bath is coupled to the central region of the chain, the system will exhibit diffusive behavior in the initial stage, and then transition to ballistic transport in the delocalized phase and to logarithmic transport in the localized phase. - This transition time increases with the square of the width of the coupling region. 3. **Coupling of the heat bath at equally spaced positions**: - When the heat bath is coupled to equally spaced positions, the system behaves similarly to the case of local coupling in the initial stage, but will eventually transition to diffusive transport. - In the localized phase, this transition time increases exponentially with the spacing between the coupling points. 4. **Explanation of the classical master equation**: - The researchers proposed a classical master equation, which can qualitatively explain the above - observed results and even quantitatively predict the transport properties under certain parameters. - The particle motion in the classical model can be regarded as a random walk, and its diffusion constant \( D \) decays exponentially with the increase of the coupling point spacing \( \lambda \), that is, \( D \sim \lambda^2 \exp(-\lambda/\xi) \). In summary, through numerical simulations and theoretical analyses, this paper reveals the complex influence of heat - bath coupling on quantum transport in the AAH model, especially the changes in transport properties in different phases. These results are of great significance for understanding the dynamic behaviors of non - equilibrium quantum systems.
