Abstract:Jet substructure in heavy-ion collisions is a rapidly evolving area with lots of intriguing new measurements. This contribution presents a selection of recent jet-substructure measurements from experiments at the LHC, in particular, soft-drop groomed radii of jets and reclustered large-radius jets from ATLAS, jet axis difference and generalized jet angularities from ALICE, as well as dijet shapes and b-jet shapes from the CMS experiment.

Abstract:A measurement is presented of the primary Lund jet plane (LJP) density in inclusive jet production in proton-proton collisions. The analysis uses 138 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the CMS experiment at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The LJP, a representation of the phase space of emissions inside jets, is constructed using iterative jet declustering. The transverse momentum $k_\mathrm{T}$ and the splitting angle $\Delta R$ of an emission relative to its emitter are measured at each step of the jet declustering process. The average density of emissions as function of $\ln(k_\mathrm{T}/$GeV) and $\ln(R/\Delta R)$ is measured for jets with distance parameters $R$ = 0.4 or 0.8, transverse momentum $p_\mathrm{T}$ $\gt$ 700 GeV, and rapidity $\vert y\vert$ $\lt$ 1.7. The jet substructure is measured using the charged-particle tracks of the jet. The measured distributions, unfolded to the level of stable particles, are compared with theoretical predictions from simulations and with perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations. Due to the ability of the LJP to factorize physical effects, these measurements can be used to improve different aspects of the physics modeling in event generators.

Abstract:At the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, jets have been a useful tool to probe the properties of the hot, dense matter created. At the Large Hadron Collider, collisions of Pb+Pb at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.5 TeV will provide a large cross section of jets at high $E_T$ above the minimum bias heavy ion background. Simulations of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment's capability to measure jets in heavy ion collisions are presented. In particular, $\gamma$-jet measurements can estimate the amount of energy lost by a jet interacting strongly with the medium, since the tagged photon passes through unaffected.

Abstract:Jet substructure studies at the Large Hadron Collider have been used to constrain parton distribution functions, test perturbative QCD, measure the strong-coupling constant, and probe the properties of the quark-gluon plasma. We extend these studies to lower energies at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider that would additionally allow us to test existing models of non-perturbative physics. In this study, we present a \pythia-based Monte Carlo study of substructure of jets produced in $p+p$ collisions at 200 GeV. The selection criteria is adapted for a feasible measurement at sPHENIX. We consider different types of jet substructure observables such as jet angularities and primary Lund Plane with a special focus on suppression of collinear radiation around emitting heavy quark known as a dead cone effect.

Measurement of the jet mass and angularities in Pb-Pb collisions at 5.02 TeV with ALICE

Abstract:Jet substructure observables provide powerful tools to search for new physics and test theoretical descriptions of perturbative and non-perturbative processes in QCD. In heavy-ion collisions, jet substructure observables are used to elucidate the structure and dynamics of the quark-gluon plasma. Jet mass is one such observable, which probes the virtuality of hard-scattered partons and their modified fragmentation. Additionally, generalized jet angularities provide a powerful tool for differential measurements of the jet shower and its modification, as two parameters vary the weight of the jet constituents' relative angle and $p_\mathrm{T}$. Previous measurements of the jet mass and jet angularities have shown conflicting differences in comparison with models. To clarify these results, we present new measurements of the jet mass and jet angularities using an identical jet sample. The high-precision tracking system of ALICE enables these measurements over a broad range in $p_\mathrm{T}$, with low-$p_\mathrm{T}$ reach that is unique at the LHC. We report the generalized jet mass and jet angularities using charged-particle tracks in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 5.02$ TeV. Various jet angularity parameters are investigated for the jet resolution parameter $R = 0.2$. Results are compared to pp collisions and theoretical models.

Abstract:Measurements of the substructure of top-quark jets are presented, using 140 fb$^{-1}$ of 13 TeV $pp$ collision data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Top-quark jets reconstructed with the anti-$k_{t}$ algorithm with a radius parameter $R=1.0$ are selected in top-quark pair ($t\bar{t}$) events where one top quark decays semileptonically and the other hadronically, or where both top quarks decay hadronically. The top-quark jets are required to have transverse momentum $p_\mathrm{T} > 350$ GeV, yielding large samples of data events with jet $p_\mathrm{T}$ values between 350 and 600 GeV. One- and two-dimensional differential cross-sections for eight substructure variables, defined using only the charged components of the jets, are measured in a particle-level phase space by correcting for the smearing and acceptance effects induced by the detector. The differential cross-sections are compared with the predictions of several Monte Carlo simulations in which top-quark pair-production quantum chromodynamic matrix-element calculations at next-to-leading-order precision in the strong coupling constant $\alpha_\mathrm{S}$ are passed to leading-order parton shower and hadronization generators. The Monte Carlo predictions for measures of the broadness, and also the two-body structure, of the top-quark jets are found to be in good agreement with the measurements, while variables sensitive to the three-body structure of the top-quark jets exhibit some tension with the measured distributions.

Abstract:Multijet events at large transverse momentum ($p_\mathrm{T}$) are measured at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV using data recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.3 fb$^{-1}$. The multiplicity of jets with $p_\mathrm{T}$ $>$ 50 GeV that are produced in association with a high-$p_\mathrm{T}$ dijet system is measured in various ranges of the $p_\mathrm{T}$ of the jet with the highest transverse momentum and as a function of the azimuthal angle difference $\Delta\phi_{1,2}$ between the two highest $p_\mathrm{T}$ jets in the dijet system. The differential production cross sections are measured as a function of the transverse momenta of the four highest $p_\mathrm{T}$ jets. The measurements are compared with leading and next-to-leading order matrix element calculations supplemented with simulations of parton shower, hadronization, and multiparton interactions. In addition, the measurements are compared with next-to-leading order matrix element calculations combined with transverse-momentum dependent parton densities and transverse-momentum dependent parton shower.

Abstract:Measurements are presented of the jet invariant mass and substructure in proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector using an integrated luminosity of 37 pb-1. These results exercise the tools for distinguishing the signatures of new boosted massive particles in the hadronic final state. Two "fat" jet algorithms are used, along with the filtering jet grooming technique that was pioneered in ATLAS. New jet substructure observables are compared for the first time to data at the LHC. Finally, a sample of candidate boosted top quark events collected in the 2010 data is analyzed in detail for the jet substructure properties of hadronic "top-jets" in the final state. These measurements demonstrate not only our excellent understanding of QCD in a new energy regime but open the path to using complex jet substructure observables in the search for new physics.

Measurement of multidifferential cross sections for dijet production in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Abstract:A measurement of the dijet production cross section is reported based on proton-proton collision data collected in 2016 at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of up to 36.3 fb$^{-1}$. Jets are reconstructed with the anti-$k_\mathrm{T}$ algorithm for distance parameters of $R$ = 0.4 and 0.8. Cross sections are measured double-differentially (2D) as a function of the largest absolute rapidity $\lvert y_\text{max}\rvert$ of the two jets with the highest transverse momenta $p_\mathrm{T}$ and their invariant mass $m_{1,2}$, and triple-differentially (3D) as a function of the rapidity separation $y^*$, the total boost $y_\mathrm{b}$, and either $m_{1,2}$ or the average $p_\mathrm{T}$ of the two jets. The cross sections are unfolded to correct for detector effects and are compared with fixed-order calculations derived at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. The impact of the measurements on the parton distribution functions and the strong coupling constant at the mass of the Z boson is investigated, yielding a value of $\alpha_\mathrm{S}$ = 0.1179 $\pm$ 0.0019.

Abstract:The internal structure of jets produced in pp collisions at the LHC is measured using the ATLAS detector in an inclusive jet sample corresponding to 35pb-1 of pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV. Classical jet shape and energy flow measurements are complemented with measurements of new substructure observables with comparisons made to several leading order parton shower Monte Carlo programs. The jet invariant mass and \kt splitting scale are measured for anti-kt jets with a distance parameter of R=1.0 and Cambridge-Aachen jets with R=1.2. Furthermore, a splitting and filtering procedure is applied to the Cambridge-Aachen jets. These tools are then utilized for the first measurements of the filtered jet mass at the LHC in the inclusive jet sample as well the W+1 jet sample, in which a hadronic W mass peak is observed in the jet invariant mass spectrum. A sample of candidate boosted top quark events is also analyzed in detail for the jet substructure properties of hadronic "top-jets" in the final state.
Measurement and QCD analysis of double-differential inclusive jet cross sections in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Abstract:A measurement of the inclusive jet production in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV is presented. The double-differential cross sections are measured as a function of the jet transverse momentum $p_\mathrm{T}$ and the absolute jet rapidity $\lvert y \rvert$. The anti-$k_\mathrm{T}$ clustering algorithm is used with distance parameter of 0.4 (0.7) in a phase space region with jet $p_\mathrm{T}$ from 97 GeV up to 3.1 TeV and $\lvert y \rvert$ $\lt$ 2.0. Data collected with the CMS detector are used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.3 fb$^{-1}$ (33.5 fb$^{-1}$). The measurement is used in a comprehensive QCD analysis at next-to-next-to-leading order, which results in significant improvement in the accuracy of the parton distributions in the proton. Simultaneously, the value of the strong coupling constant at the Z boson mass is extracted as $\alpha_\mathrm{S}$(Z) = 0.1170 $\pm$ 0.0019. For the first time, these data are used in a standard model effective field theory analysis at next-to-leading order, where parton distributions and the QCD parameters are extracted simultaneously with imposed constraints on the Wilson coefficient $c_1$ of 4-quark contact interactions. Note added: in the Addendum to this paper, available as Appendix B in this document, an improved value of $\alpha_\mathrm{S}$(Z) = 0.1166 $\pm$ 0.0017 has been extracted. This result supersedes the number in the above abstract of the original publication.

Abstract:The production of Z bosons associated with jets is measured in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with data recorded with the CMS experiment at the LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.3 fb$^{-1}$. The multiplicity of jets with transverse momentum $p_\mathrm{T}$ $\gt$ 30 GeV is measured for different regions of the Z boson's $p_\mathrm{T}$(Z), from lower than 10 GeV to higher than 100 GeV. The azimuthal correlation $\Delta \phi$ between the Z boson and the leading jet, as well as the correlations between the two leading jets are measured in three regions of $p_\mathrm{T}$(Z). The measurements are compared with several predictions at leading and next-to-leading orders, interfaced with parton showers. Predictions based on transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions and corresponding parton showers give a good description of the measurement in the regions where multiple parton interactions and higher jet multiplicities are not important. The effects of multiple parton interactions are shown to be important to correctly describe the measured spectra in the low $p_\mathrm{T}$(Z) regions.

Abstract:The present work presents a study of jet production in the central region (|η| < 2.5) and the forward region (3 < |η| < 5) in proton–proton collisions at different energies: s = 13.6 TeV, s = 20 TeV, and s = 27 TeV. These energies are the present and expected future energies of the Large Hadron Collider. In addition, the measurement of dijets—where the dijet selected is the one leading the jet in the central region and the second jet is the one with the sub-leading role in the forward region—was investigated with the same collision energies. Jets are reconstructed with the anti-kT (R = 0.5) algorithm in the transverse momentum range pT = 15–1000 GeV/c. Different Monte Carlo event generators were used: PYTHIA, HERWIG, and EPOS-LHC. The momentum, multiplicity, energy, pseudorapidity, and azimuthal angle of the jets were measured. In addition, the dijet multiplicity and the difference in the azimuthal angle were measured. The generation of events was carried out using the Rivet analysis framework. It is observed that, when the energy of the collision increases, the production of the jets in the central and forward regions and the dijets multiplicity increase; overall an agreement is observed between the three event generators. The disagreement between the different generators points to potential areas for development or additional study.

Abstract:Measurements of jet cross-section ratios between inclusive bins of jet multiplicity are performed in 140 fb$^{-1}$ of proton--proton collisions with $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV center-of-mass energy, recorded with the ATLAS detector at CERN's Large Hadron Collider. Observables that are sensitive the energy-scale and angular distribution of radiation due to the strong interaction in the final state are measured double-differentially, in bins of jet multiplicity, and are unfolded to account for acceptance and detector-related effects. Additionally, the scalar sum of the two leading jets' transverse momenta is measured triple-differentially, in bins of the third jet's transverse momentum as well as bins of jet multiplicity. The measured distributions are used to construct ratios of the inclusive jet-multiplicity bins, which have been shown to be sensitive to the strong coupling $\alpha_{\textrm S}$ while being less sensitive than other observables to systematic uncertainties and parton distribution functions. The measured distributions are compared with state-of-the-art QCD calculations, including next-to-next-to-leading-order predictions. Studies leading to reduced jet energy scale uncertainties significantly improve the precision of this work, and are documented herein.

Observation of enhanced long-range elliptic anisotropies inside high-multiplicity jets in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Abstract:A search for partonic collective effects inside jets produced in proton-proton collisions is performed via correlation measurements of charged constituents using the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The analysis uses data collected at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. Jets are reconstructed with the anti-$k_\mathrm{T}$ algorithm with a distance parameter of 0.8 and are required to have transverse momentum greater than 550 GeV and pseudorapidity $\lvert\eta\rvert$ $\lt$ 1.6. Two-particle correlations among the charged constituents within the jets are studied as functions of the particles' azimuthal angle and pseudorapidity separations ($\Delta\phi^*$ and $\Delta\eta^*$) in a jet coordinate basis, where constituents' $\eta^*$, $\phi^*$ are defined relative to the direction of the jet. The correlation functions are studied in classes of in-jet charged-particle multiplicity up to $N_\text{ch}^\mathrm{j}$ $\approx$ 100. Fourier harmonics are extracted from long-range azimuthal correlation functions to characterize azimuthal anisotropy for $\lvert\Delta\eta^*\rvert$ $\gt$ 2. For low-$N_\text{ch}^\mathrm{j}$, the long-range elliptic anisotropic harmonic, $v^*_2$, is observed to decrease with $N_\text{ch}^\mathrm{j}$. This trend is well described by Monte Carlo event generators. However, a rising trend for $v^*_2$ emerges at $N_\text{ch}^\mathrm{j}$ $\gtrsim$ 80, hinting at a possible onset of collective behavior, which is not reproduced by the models tested. This observation yields new insights into the dynamics of parton fragmentation processes in the vacuum.

Abstract:A measurement is presented of a ratio observable that provides a measure of the azimuthal correlations among jets with large transverse momentum p T . This observable is measured in multijet events over the range of p T = 360 - 3170 Ge V based on data collected by the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 Te V , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 134 fb - 1 . The results are compared with predictions from Monte Carlo parton-shower event generator simulations, as well as with fixed-order perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) predictions at next-to-leading-order (NLO) accuracy obtained with different parton distribution functions (PDFs) and corrected for nonperturbative and electroweak effects. Data and theory agree within uncertainties. From the comparison of the measured observable with the pQCD prediction obtained with the NNPDF3.1 NLO PDFs, the strong coupling at the Z boson mass scale is α S ( m Z ) = 0.1177 ± 0.0013 (exp) - 0.0073 + 0.0116 (theo) = 0 . 1177 - 0.0074 + 0.0117 , where the total uncertainty is dominated by the scale dependence of the fixed-order predictions. A test of the running of α S in the Te V region shows no deviation from the expected NLO pQCD behaviour.
Multidifferential study of identified charged hadron distributions in $Z$-tagged jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$13 TeV

Abstract:Jet fragmentation functions are measured for the first time in proton-proton collisions for charged pions, kaons, and protons within jets recoiling against a $Z$ boson. The charged-hadron distributions are studied longitudinally and transversely to the jet direction for jets with transverse momentum 20 $< p_{\textrm{T}} < 100$ GeV and in the pseudorapidity range $2.5 < \eta < 4$. The data sample was collected with the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.64 fb$^{-1}$. Triple differential distributions as a function of the hadron longitudinal momentum fraction, hadron transverse momentum, and jet transverse momentum are also measured for the first time. This helps constrain transverse-momentum-dependent fragmentation functions. Differences in the shapes and magnitudes of the measured distributions for the different hadron species provide insights into the hadronization process for jets predominantly initiated by light quarks.
