Abstract:Oort-Zink proved that a $p$-divisible group over a normal base in characteristic $p$ with constant Newton polygon is isogenous to a $p$-divisible group admitting a slope filtration. In this paper, we generalize this result to log $p$-divisible groups.

Abstract:In this paper, we give discreteness criteria of subgroups of the special linear group on ℚ p or ℂ p in two and higher dimensions. Jørgensen’s inequality gives a necessary condition for a non-elementary group of Möbius transformations to be discrete. We give a version of Jørgensen’s inequality for SL( m ,ℂ p ).

Abstract:This paper concerns arithmetic families of $\varphi$-modules over reduced affinoid spaces. For such a family, we first prove that the slope polygons is lower semicontinuous around any rigid point. If the slope polygons are locally constant around a rigid point, we further prove that around this point, the family has a global slope filtration after base change to some extended Robba ring.

Abstract:Fix a prime $p\geq5$, an integer $N\geq1$ relatively prime to $p$, and an irreducible residual global Galois representation $\bar{r}: Gal_{\mathbb{Q}}\rightarrow GL_2(\mathbb{F}_p)$. In this paper, we utilize ghost series to study $p$-adic slopes of $\mathscr{L}$-invariants for $\bar{r}$-newforms. More precisely, under a locally reducible and strongly generic condition for $\bar{r}$: (1) we determine the slopes of $\mathscr{L}$-invariants associated to $\bar{r}$-newforms of weight $k$ and level $\Gamma_0(Np)$, with at most $O(log_pk)$ exceptions; (2) we establish the integrality of these slopes; (3) we prove an equidistribution property for these slopes as the weight $k$ tends to infinity, which confirms the equidistribution conjecture for $\mathscr{L}$-invariants proposed by Bergdall--Pollack recently.

Abstract:Let $\mathscr{O}_K$ be a henselian DVR with field of fractions $K$ and residue field of characteristic $p>0$. Let $S$ denote $\mathop{\mathrm{Spec}} \mathscr{O}_K$ endowed with the canonical log structure. We show that the generic fiber functor $\mathbf{BT}_{S, {\mathrm{d}}}^{\log}\to \mathbf{BT}^{\mathrm{st}}_K$ between the category of dual representable log $p$-divisible groups over $S$ and the category of $p$-divisible groups with semistable reduction over $K$ is an equivalence. If $\mathscr{O}_K$ is further complete with perfect residue field and of mixed characteristic, we show that $\mathbf{BT}_{S, {\mathrm{d}}}^{\log}$ is also equivalent to the category of semistable Galois $\mathbb{Z}_p$-representations with Hodge-Tate weights in $\{0,1\}$. Finally, we show that the above equivalences respect monodromies.

Abstract:The slope filtration of Euclidean lattices was introduced in works by Stuhler in the late 1970s, extended by Grayson a few years later, as a new tool for reduction theory and its applications to the study of arithmetic groups. Lattices with trivial filtration are called semistable, in keeping with a classical terminology. In 1997, Bost conjectured that the tensor product of semistable lattices should be semistable itself. Our aim in this work is to study these questions for the restricted class of isodual lattices. Such lattices appear in a wide range of contexts, and it is rather natural to study their slope filtration. We exhibit specific properties in this case, which allow, in turn, to prove some new particular cases of Bost's conjecture.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number, let $\mathcal{O}_F$ be the ring of integers of a finite field extension $F$ of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ and let $\mathcal{O}_K$ be a complete valuation ring of rank $1$ and mixed characteristic $(0,p)$. We introduce and study the "integral Hodge polygon", a new invariant of $p$-divisible groups $H$ over $\mathcal{O}_K$ endowed with an action $\iota$ of $\mathcal{O}_F$. If $F|\mathbb{Q}_p$ is unramified, this invariant recovers the classical Hodge polygon and only depends on the reduction of $(H,\iota)$ to the residue field of $\mathcal{O}_K$. This is not the case in general, whence the attribute "integral". The new polygon lies between Fargues' Harder-Narasimhan polygons of the $p$-power torsion parts of $H$ and another combinatorial invariant of $(H,\iota)$ called the Pappas-Rapoport polygon. Furthermore, the integral Hodge polygon behaves continuously in families over a $p$-adic analytic space.

Abstract:A stochastic model for the evolution of a growing population is proposed, in order to explain empirical power-law distributions in the frequency of family names as a function of the family size. Preliminary results show that the predicted exponents are in good agreement with real data. The evolution of family-name distributions is discussed in the frame of vertical transmission of cultural features.

Abstract:A p-divisible group, or more generally an F-crystal, is said to be Hodge-Newton reducible if its Hodge polygon passes through a break point of its Newton polygon. Katz proved that Hodge-Newton reducible F-crystals admit a canonical filtration called the Hodge-Newton filtration. The notion of Hodge-Newton reducibility plays an important role in the deformation theory of p-divisible groups; the key property is that the Hodge-Newton filtration of a p-divisible group over a field of characteristic p can be uniquely lifted to a filtration of its deformation. We generalize Katz's result to F-crystals that arise from an unramified local Shimura datum of Hodge type. As an application, we give a generalization of Serre-Tate deformation theory for local Shimura data of Hodge type. We also apply our deformation theory to study some congruence relations on Shimura varieties of Hodge type.

Fixed locus dimension of diagonalizable $p$-groups

Abstract:We obtain lower bounds for the dimension of fixed loci of abelian $p$-groups acting on smooth projective varieties. Those arise from modulo p Chern numbers, and are shown to be optimal. The bounds are expressed in a natural way by introducing an appropriate filtration on the modulo $p$ cobordism ring. They are obtained using equivariant localization methods, via the concentration theorem, and by a technique of "partition dividing".

Primitive elements generalize the "points of exact order $N$," developed by Drinfeld and Katz-Mazur for elliptic curves.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the general notion of the slope for families of curves $f: X \to Y$. The main result is an answer to the above question when $\dim Y = 2$, and we prove a lower bound for this new slope in this case over fields of any characteristic. Both the notion and the slope inequality are compatible with the theory for $\dim Y = 0, 1$ in a very natural way, and this gives a strong evidence that the slope for an $n$-fold fibration of curves $f: X \to Y$ may be $K_{X/Y}^n / \mathrm{ch}_{n-1}(f_* \omega_{X/Y})$. Rather than the usual stability methods, the whole proof of the slope inequality here is based on a completely new method using characteristic $p>0$ geometry. A simpler version of this method yields a new proof of the slope inequality when $\dim Y = 1$.

Abstract:In this paper, we generalize two results of H. Darmon and V. Rotger on triple product $p$-adic $L$-functions associated with Hida families to finite slope families. We first prove a $p$-adic Gross-Zagier formula, then demonstrate an application to a special case of the equivariant Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for supersingular elliptic curves.

Abstract:We generalize bounds of Liu-Wan-Xiao for slopes in eigencurves for definite unitary groups of rank $2$ to slopes in eigenvarieties for definite unitary groups of any rank. We show that for a definite unitary group of rank $n$, the Newton polygon of the characteristic power series of the $U_p$ Hecke operator has exact growth rate $x^{1+\frac2{n(n-1)}}$, times a constant proportional to the distance of the weight from the boundary of weight space. The proof goes through the classification of forms associated to principal series representations. We also give a consequence for the geometry of these eigenvarieties over the boundary of weight space.

On the structure of the Bloch--Kato Selmer groups of modular forms over anticyclotomic $\mathbf{Z}_p$-towers

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime number and let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field in which $p$ is split. Let $f$ be a modular form with good reduction at $p$. We study the variation of the Bloch--Kato Selmer groups and the Bloch--Kato--Shafarevich--Tate groups of $f$ over the anticyclotomic $\mathbf{Z}_p$-extension $K_\infty$ of $K$. In particular, we show that under the generalized Heegner hypothesis, if the $p$-localization of the generalized Heegner cycle attached to $f$ is primitive and certain local conditions hold, then the Pontryagin dual of the Selmer group of $f$ over $K_\infty$ is free over the Iwasawa algebra. Consequently, the Bloch--Kato--Shafarevich--Tate groups of $f$ vanish. This generalizes earlier works of Matar and Matar--Nekovář on elliptic curves. Furthermore, our proof applies uniformly to the ordinary and non-ordinary settings.

Quotients of the mapping class group by power subgroups

Abstract:We study the quotient of the mapping class group $\operatorname{Mod}_g^n$ of a surface of genus $g$ with $n$ punctures, by the subgroup $\operatorname{Mod}_g^n[p]$ generated by the $p$-th powers of Dehn twists. Our first main result is that $\operatorname{Mod}_g^1 /\operatorname{Mod}_g^1[p]$ contains an infinite normal subgroup of infinite index, and in particular is not commensurable to a higher-rank lattice, for all but finitely many explicit values of $p$. Next, we prove that $\operatorname{Mod}_g^0/ \operatorname{Mod}_g^0[p]$ contains a Kähler subgroup of finite index, for every $p\ge 2$ coprime with six. Finally, we observe that the existence of finite-index subgroups of $\operatorname{Mod}_g^0$ with infinite abelianization is equivalent to the analogous problem for $\operatorname{Mod}_g^0/ \operatorname{Mod}_g^0[p]$.

Abstract:Let $k = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt {-m})$ and $p > 2$ split in $k$. We prove new properties of the $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions $K/k$, distinct from the cyclotomic; we do not assume $K/k$ totally ramified, nor the triviality of the $p$-class group of $k$. These properties are governed by the $p$-valuation, $\delta_p(k)$, of a suitable Fermat quotient of the fundamental $p$-unit $x$ of $k$, which also yields the order of the logarithmic class group (2.2, App. A), and generalize the Gold-Sands criterion (5.1, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5). These results use the second element $(\mathcal{H}_{K_n}/\mathcal{H}_{K_n}^{G_n})^{G_n}$ of the filtration of the $p$-class groups in $K=\cup_n K_n$, without any argument of Iwasawa's theory, and provide new perspectives. We compute, Sec. 7, the first layer $K_1$, using the Log-function, then give a short proof of a result of Kundu-Washington (5.6), and show (7.4, 7.6) that capitulation is possible in $K$, suggesting Conjecture 5.8. Calculations are gathered App. B.

Abstract:We define an enrichment of the logarithmic derivative of the zeta function of a variety over a finite field to a power series with coefficients in the Grothendieck--Witt group. We show that this enrichment is related to the topology of the real points of a lift. For cellular schemes over a field, we prove a rationality result for this enriched logarithmic derivative of the zeta function as an analogue of part of the Weil conjectures. We also compute several examples, including toric varieties, and show that the enrichment is a motivic measure.

Abstract:We prove non-trivial lower bounds for sums of type $\sum_{p\sim P}g(\gamma\Log p)$, where $g$ is a non-negative $2\pi$-periodical function and $\gamma$ is a given parameter. As an application we prove that $\zeta(1+it)^{\pm1}\ll\Log\Log (9+|t|)$ and extend the zero-free region of the Riemann zeta-function.

Abstract:Let $f: S \longrightarrow C$ be a surjective morphism with connected fibers from a smooth complex projective surface $S$ to a smooth complex projective curve $C$ with general fiber $F$. In this paper, we develop a more general version of the slope inequality for data $(D, \mathcal{F})$, where $D$ is an arbitrary relatively effective divisor on $S$ and $\mathcal{F}$ is a locally free sub-sheaf of $f_{*}\mathcal{O}_{S}(D)$. We see how the speciality of $D$, restricted to the general fiber, plays a role in the results. Moreover, we compute some natural examples and provide applications.

Abstract:In this paper we study the states of Poisson type and infinitely divisible states on compact quantum groups. Each state of Poisson type is infinitely divisible, i.e., it admits $n$-th root for all $n\geq1$. The main result is that on finite quantum groups infinitely divisible states must be of Poisson type. This generalizes Böge's theorem concerning infinitely divisible measures (commutative case) and Parthasarathy's result on infinitely divisible positive definite functions (cocommutative case). Two proofs are given.
