Abstract:For a three-level system monitored by an ancilla, we show that quantum Zeno effect can be employed to control quantum jump for error correction. Further, we show that we can realize cNOT gate, and effect dense coding and teleportation. We believe that this work paves the way to generalize the control of a qudit.

Abstract:Controlling quantum jumps is crucial for reliable quantum computing. In this work, we demonstrate how the quantum Zeno effect can be applied to a two qubit system interacting with an ancilla which is a component of surface code architecture used to control undesired transitions. Further, we show that by designing the interaction and tuning measurement frequency, the quantum Zeno effect can be used to achieve the desired target state in both single-qubit and two qubit systems.

Abstract:We employ the stochastic path-integral formalism and action principle for continuous quantum measurements – the Chantasri–Dressel–Jordan (CDJ) action formalism Chantasri et al., (2013; 2015) – to understand the stages in which quantum Zeno effect helps control the states of a simple quantum system. The detailed dynamics of a driven two-level system subjected to repeated measurements unravels a myriad of phases, so to say. When the detection frequency is smaller than the Rabi frequency, the oscillations slow down, eventually coming to a halt at an interesting resonance when measurements are spaced exactly by the time of transition between the two states. On the other hand, in the limit of large number of repeated measurements, the dynamics organizes itself in a rather interesting way about two hyperbolic points in phase space whose stable and unstable directions are reversed. Thus, the phase space flow occurs from one hyperbolic point to another, in different ways organized around the separatrices. We believe that the systematic treatment presented here paves the way for a better and clearer understanding of quantum Zeno effect in the context of quantum error correction.

A Multi-Qubit Quantum Gate Using the Zeno Effect

Abstract:The Zeno effect, in which repeated observation freezes the dynamics of a quantum system, stands as an iconic oddity of quantum mechanics. When a measurement is unable to distinguish between states in a subspace, the dynamics within that subspace can be profoundly altered, leading to non-trivial behavior. Here we show that such a measurement can turn a non-interacting system with only single-qubit control into a two- or multi-qubit entangling gate, which we call a Zeno gate. The gate works by imparting a geometric phase on the system, conditioned on it lying within a particular nonlocal subspace. We derive simple closed-form expressions for the gate fidelity under a number of non-idealities and show that the gate is viable for implementation in circuit and cavity QED systems. More specifically, we illustrate the functioning of the gate via dispersive readout in both the Markovian and non-Markovian readout regimes, and derive conditions for longitudinal readout to ideally realize the gate.

Abstract:We experimentally study quantum Zeno effects in a parity-time (PT) symmetric cold atom gas periodically coupled to a reservoir. Based on the state-of-the-art control of inter-site couplings of atoms in a momentum lattice, we implement a synthetic two-level system with passive PT symmetry over two lattice sites, where an effective dissipation is introduced through repeated couplings to the rest of the lattice. Quantum Zeno (anti-Zeno) effects manifest in our experiment as the overall dissipation of the two-level system becoming suppressed (enhanced) with increasing coupling intensity or frequency. We demonstrate that quantum Zeno regimes exist in the broken PT symmetry phase, and are bounded by exceptional points separating the PT symmetric and PT broken phases, as well as by a discrete set of critical coupling frequencies. Our experiment establishes the connection between PT-symmetry-breaking transitions and quantum Zeno effects, and is extendable to higher dimensions or to interacting regimes, thanks to the flexible control with atoms in a momentum lattice.

Abstract:We present an experimentally feasible scheme to implement holonomic quantum computation in the ultrastrong-coupling regime of light-matter interaction. The large anharmonicity and the Z(2) symmetry of the quantum Rabi model allow us to build an effective three-level Lambda-structured artificial atom for quantum computation. The proposed physical implementation includes two gradiometric flux qubits and two microwave resonators where single-qubit gates are realized by a two-tone driving on one physical qubit, and a two-qubit gate is achieved with a time-dependent coupling between the field quadratures of both resonators. Our work paves the way for scalable holonomic quantum computation in ultrastrongly coupled systems.
Demonstrating Quantum Zeno Effect on IBM Quantum Experience

Abstract:Quantum Zeno Effect (QZE) has been one of the most interesting phenomena in quantum mechanics ever since its discovery in 1977 by Misra and Sudarshan [J. Math. Phys. \textbf{18}, 756 (1977)]. There have been many attempts for experimental realization of the same. Here, we present the first ever simulation of QZE on IBM quantum experience platform. We simulate a two-level system for Rabi-driven oscillation and then disturb the time evolution by intermediate repetitive measurements using quantum gates to increase the survival probability of the qubit in the initial state. The circuits are designed along with the added intermediate measurements and executed on IBM quantum simulator, and the outcomes are shown to be consistent with the predictions. The increasing survival probability with the number of intermediate measurements demonstrates QZE. Furthermore, some alternative explanations for the obtained results are provided which leads to some ambiguity in giving the exact reasoning for the observed outcomes.

Abstract:We propose a method to generate large cluster states without usingconditional (e.g., CNOT, C-phase) gates. Indeed, an arbitrarily large clusterstate can be generated and expanded almost deterministically by single-qubitrotations and a special non-deterministic collective detection. If the rotationof each step is sufficiently small, the quantum Zeno effect will guarantee thatthe state is projected into the intended subspace after each measurement, andan almost-perfect cluster state can be produced. Although the true QZE can not be strictly implemented on a quantum computer where all the operations, except the final measurements, must be unitary ones, we can simulate it by coupling the system to a number of ancillas and replacing the projective measurements of the QZE by suitable unitary gates.

Abstract:Behind the flourish of quantum technology is the mature quantum control technique, which allows one to manipulate the quantum states of a physical system with unprecedented precisions. The conquests in quantum domain proceed from arbitrary quantum state preparation but are mostly limited to closed quantum systems. The ultimate goal of quantum control is to realize arbitrary quantum operations (AQuOs), i.e. the completely-positive-trace-preserving maps, for all possible physical processes of an open quantum system. However, the demanding extra physical resources impose obstacles for experiments. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a universal approach of AQuO on a photonic qudit with minimum physical resource of a two-level ancilla and a $\log_{2}d$-scale circuit depth for a $d$-dimensional system. The AQuO is then applied in quantum trajectory simulation for quantum subspace stabilization and quantum Zeno dynamics, arbitrary quantum state preparation, as well as incoherent manipulation of the qudit. Furthermore, the AQuO allows rank-$d^{2}$ positive operator-valued measures, which outperform conventional tomography technique in practice. Therefore, the demonstrated AQuO for complete quantum control would play an indispensable role in quantum information science.

Zeno-effect Computation: Opportunities and Challenges

Abstract:Adiabatic quantum computing has demonstrated how quantum Zeno can be used to construct quantum optimisers. However, much less work has been done to understand how more general Zeno effects could be used in a similar setting. We use a construction based on three state systems rather than directly in qubits, so that a qubit can remain after projecting out one of the states. We find that our model of computing is able to recover the dynamics of a transverse field Ising model, several generalisations are possible, but our methods allow for constraints to be implemented non-perturbatively and does not need tunable couplers, unlike simple transverse field implementations. We further discuss how to implement the protocol physically using methods building on STIRAP protocols for state transfer. We find a substantial challenge, that settings defined exclusively by measurement or dissipative Zeno effects do not allow for frustration, and in these settings pathological spectral features arise leading to unfavorable runtime scaling. We discuss methods to overcome this challenge for example including gain as well as loss as is often done in optical Ising machines.

Abstract:Hilbert space dimension is a key resource for quantum information processing. A large Hilbert space is not only an essential requirement for quantum error correction, but it can also be advantageous for realizing gates and algorithms more efficiently. There has thus been considerable experimental effort in recent years to develop quantum computing platforms using qudits (d-dimensional quantum systems with d>2) as the fundamental unit of quantum information. Just as with qubits, quantum error correction of these qudits will be necessary in the long run, but to date error correction of logical qudits has not been demonstrated experimentally. Here we report the experimental realization of an error-corrected logical qutrit (d=3) and ququart (d=4) by employing the Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) bosonic code. Using a reinforcement learning agent, we optimize the GKP qutrit (ququart) as a ternary (quaternary) quantum memory and achieve beyond break-even error correction with a gain of 1.82 +/- 0.03 (1.87 +/- 0.03). This work represents a new way of leveraging the large Hilbert space of a harmonic oscillator for hardware-efficient quantum error correction.

Experimental realization of universal high-dimensional quantum gates with ultra-high fidelity and efficiency

Abstract:Qudit, a high-dimensional quantum system, provides a larger Hilbert space to process the quantum information and has shown remarkable advantages over the qubit counterparts. It is a great challenge to realize the high fidelity universal quantum gates with qudits. Here we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate a set of universal quantum gates for a single optical qudit with four dimensions (including the generalized Pauli $X_4$ gate, Pauli $Z_4$ gate, and all of their integer powers), which are encoded in the polarization-spatial degree of freedom without multiple unstable cascaded interferometers. Furthermore, we also realize the controlled-$X_4$ gate and all of its integer powers. We have achieved both the ultra-high average gate fidelity $99.73\%$ and efficiency $99.47\%$, which are above the the error threshold for fault-tolerant quantum computation. Our work paves a way for the large-scale high-dimensional fault-tolerant quantum computation with a polynomial resource cost.

Abstract:The holonomic approach to controlling (nitrogen-vacancy) NV-center qubits provides an elegant way of theoretically devising universal quantum gates that operate on qubits via calculable microwave pulses. There is, however, a lack of simulated results from the theory of holonomic control of quantum registers with more than two qubits describing the transition between the dark states. In light of this, we have been experimenting with the IBM Quantum Experience technology to determine the capabilities of simulating holonomic control of NV-centers for three qubits describing an eight-level system that produces a non-Abelian geometric phase. The tunability of the geometric phase via the detuning frequency is demonstrated through the high fidelity (about 80%) of 3-qubit off-resonant holonomic gates over the on-resonant ones. The transition between the dark states shows the alignment of the gate dark state with the qubits initial state hence decoherence of the multi-qubit system is well-controlled through a 0.33pi rotation. The electron return probability can exhibit spin-orbit coupling-like behavior as observed in topological materials based on the extra geometric phase.

Abstract:Superconducting quantum devices are a leading technology for quantum computation, but they suffer from several challenges. Gate errors, coherence errors and a lack of connectivity all contribute to low fidelity results. In particular, connectivity restrictions enforce a gate set that requires three-qubit gates to be decomposed into one- or two-qubit gates. This substantially increases the number of two-qubit gates that need to be executed. However, many quantum devices have access to higher energy levels. We can expand the qubit abstraction of $|0\rangle$ and $|1\rangle$ to a ququart which has access to the $|2\rangle$ and $|3\rangle$ state, but with shorter coherence times. This allows for two qubits to be encoded in one ququart, enabling increased virtual connectivity between physical units from two adjacent qubits to four fully connected qubits. This connectivity scheme allows us to more efficiently execute three-qubit gates natively between two physical devices. We present direct-to-pulse implementations of several three-qubit gates, synthesized via optimal control, for compilation of three-qubit gates onto a superconducting-based architecture with access to four-level devices with the first experimental demonstration of four-level ququart gates designed through optimal control. We demonstrate strategies that temporarily use higher level states to perform Toffoli gates and always use higher level states to improve fidelities for quantum circuits. We find that these methods improve expected fidelities with increases of 2x across circuit sizes using intermediate encoding, and increases of 3x for fully-encoded ququart compilation.

Abstract:Universal quantum gates and quantum error correction~(QEC) lie in the heart of quantum information science. Large-scale quantum computing depends on a universal set of quantum gates, in which some gates may be easily carried out, while others are hard with a certain physical system. There is a unique three-qubit quantum gate called the Deutsch gate~[$\mathbb{D}(\theta)$], from which alone a circuit can be constructed so that any feasible quantum computing is attainable. As far as we know, however, $\mathbb{D}(\theta)$ has not been demonstrated. Here we design an easily realizable $\mathbb{D}(\theta)$ by using Rydberg blockade of neutral atoms, where $\theta$ can be tuned to any value in $[0,\pi]$ by adjusting the strengths of external control fields. Using similar protocols, we further show that both the Toffoli and CNOT gates can be achieved with only three laser pulses. The Toffoli gate, being universal for classical reversible computing, is also useful for QEC that plays an important role in quantum communication and fault-tolerant quantum computation. The possibility and briefness to realize these gates shed new light on the study of quantum information with neutral atoms.

Abstract:Topological quantum computation based on anyons is a promising approach to achieve fault-tolerant quantum computing. The Majorana zero modes in the Kitaev chain are an example of non-Abelian anyons where braiding operations can be used to perform quantum gates. Here we perform a quantum simulation of topological quantum computing, by teleporting a qubit encoded in the Majorana zero modes of a Kitaev chain. The quantum simulation is performed by mapping the Kitaev chain to its equivalent spin version and realizing the ground states in a superconducting quantum processor. The teleportation transfers the quantum state encoded in the spin-mapped version of the Majorana zero mode states between two Kitaev chains. The teleportation circuit is realized using only braiding operations and can be achieved despite being restricted to Clifford gates for the Ising anyons. The Majorana encoding is a quantum error detecting code for phase-flip errors, which is used to improve the average fidelity of the teleportation for six distinct states from 70.76±0.35% to 84.60±0.11%, well beyond the classical bound in either case.

Abstract:We study the generation of two-qudit entangling quantum logic gates using two techniques in quantum optimal control. We take advantage of both continuous, Lie-algebraic control and digital, Lie-group control. In both cases, the key is access to a time-dependent Hamiltonian which can generate an arbitrary unitary matrix in the group SU($d^2$). We find efficient protocols for creating high-fidelity entangling gates. As a test of our theory, we study the case of qudits robustly encoded in nuclear spins of alkaline earth atoms and manipulated with magnetic and optical fields, with entangling interactions arising from the well-known Rydberg blockade. We applied this in a case study based on a $d=10$ dimensional qudit encoded in the $I=9/2$ nuclear spin in $^{87}$Sr, controlled through a combination of nuclear spin-resonance, a tensor AC-Stark shift, and Rydberg dressing, which allows us to generate an arbitrary symmetric entangling two-qudit gate such as CPhase. Our techniques can be used to implement qudit entangling gates for any $2\le d \le10$ encoded in the nuclear spin. We also studied how decoherence due to the finite lifetime of the Rydberg states affects the creation of the CPhase gate and found, through numerical optimization, a fidelity of $0.9985$, $0.9980$, $0.9942$, and $0.9800$ for $d=2$, $d=3$, $d=5$, and $d=7$ respectively. This provides a powerful platform to explore the various applications of quantum information processing of qudits including metrological enhancement with qudits, quantum simulation, universal quantum computation, and quantum error correction.

Multi-frequency control and measurement of a spin-7/2 system encoded in a transmon qudit

Abstract:Qudits hold great promise for efficient quantum computation and the simulation of high-dimensional quantum systems. Utilizing a local Hilbert space of dimension d > 2 is known to speed up certain quantum algorithms relative to their qubit counterparts given efficient local qudit control and measurement. However, the direct realization of high-dimensional rotations and projectors has proved challenging, with most experiments relying on decompositions of SU(d) operations into series of rotations between two-level subspaces of adjacent states and projective readout of a small number of states. Here we employ simultaneous multi-frequency drives to generate rotations and projections in an effective spin-7/2 system by mapping it onto the energy eigenstates of a superconducting circuit. We implement single-shot readout of the 8 states using a multi-tone dispersive readout (F_assignment = 88.3%) and exploit the strong nonlinearity in a high EJ/EC transmon to simultaneously address each transition and realize a spin displacement operator. By combining the displacement operator with a virtual SNAP gate, we realize arbitrary single-qudit unitary operations in O(d) physical pulses and extract spin displacement gate fidelities ranging from 0.997 to 0.989 for virtual spins of size j = 1 to j = 7/2. These native qudit operations could be combined with entangling operations to explore qudit-based error correction or simulations of lattice gauge theories with qudits. Our multi-frequency approach to qudit control and measurement can be readily extended to other physical platforms that realize a multi-level system coupled to a cavity and can become a building block for efficient qudit-based quantum computation and simulation.

Achieving computational gains with quantum error correction primitives: Generation of long-range entanglement enhanced by error detection

Abstract:The resource overhead required to achieve net computational benefits from quantum error correction (QEC) limits its utility while current systems remain constrained in size, despite exceptional progress in experimental demonstrations. In this paper, we demonstrate that the strategic application of QEC primitives without logical encoding can yield significant advantages on superconducting processors--relative to any alternative error-reduction strategy--while only requiring modest overhead. We first present a novel protocol for implementing long-range CNOT gates that relies on a unitarily-prepared Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state as well as a unitary disentangling step; the protocol natively introduces an error-detection process using the disentangled qubits as flags. We demonstrate that it achieves state-of-the-art gate fidelities of over 85% across up to 40 lattice sites, significantly and consistently outperforming the best alternative measurement-based protocol without introducing any additional ancilla qubits. We then apply sparse stabilizer measurements to generate large GHZ states by detecting bit-flip and amplitude-damping errors. Employing this technique in combination with deterministic error suppression, we generate a 75-qubit GHZ state exhibiting genuine multipartite entanglement, the largest reported to date. The generation requires no more than 9 ancilla qubits and the fraction of samples discarded due to errors grows no higher than 78%, far lower than previous discard fractions required for tests using comparable numbers of fully encoded qubits. This work in total represents compelling evidence that adopting QEC primitives on current-generation devices can deliver substantial net benefits.
