Abstract:Kirigami-inspired designs can enable self-folding three-dimensional materials from flat, two-dimensional sheets. Hierarchical designs of connected levels increase the diversity of possible target structures, yet they can lead to longer folding times in the presence of fluctuations. Here, we study the effect of rotational coupling between levels on the self-folding of two-level kirigami designs driven by thermal noise in a fluid. Naturally present due to hydrodynamic resistance, we find that optimization of this coupling as control parameter can significantly improve a structure's self-folding rate and yield.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address the issue of how to improve the self-folding rate and yield of kirigami (the art of paper cutting) structures at the microscale by optimizing the rotational coupling between layers. Specifically, the study focuses on the self-folding process of a two-layer kirigami design driven by thermal noise in a fluid. The naturally occurring hydrodynamic resistance leads to rotational coupling between the layers, and optimizing this coupling can significantly enhance the self-folding rate and yield of the structure. Through numerical simulations and theoretical analysis, the paper explores the impact of different coupling parameters on the self-folding process and proposes design rules for selecting the optimal coupling parameters. These findings are of great significance for the development of fast self-folding multilayer kirigami structures, especially in applications such as soft robotics, mechanical actuators, and metamaterials.
