Abstract:In \cite{ManturovNikonovMay2023,ManturovWanMay2023} the author discovered a very general principle (called {\em the photography principle}) which allows one: a) To solve various equations (like pentagon equation) b) To construct invariants of manifolds. The advantage of that principle is that it deals with a very general notion of {\em data} and {\em data transmission} which may be of any kind. In the present paper, we show that the definition of the Dijkgraaf-Witten invariants of manifolds can be thought of as an evidence of the above principle.

Abstract:We generalize our theorems in "Mirror Principle I" to a class of balloon manifolds. Many of the results are proved for convex projective manifolds. In a subsequent paper, Mirror Principle III, we will extend the results to projective manifolds without the convexity assumption.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to construct new topological invariants of compact oriented 3-manifolds and of framed links in such manifolds. Our invariant of (a link in) a closed oriented 3-manifold is a sequence of complex numbers parametrized by complex roots of 1. For a framed link in S 3 the terms of the sequence are equale to the values of the (suitably parametrized) Jones polynomial of the link in the corresponding roots of 1. Thus, for links in S 3 our invariants are essentially equivalent to the Jones polynomial [Jo]. Note that in general we do not know if our invariant of (a framed link in) a closed oriented 3-manifold may be described as the sequence of values of a certain polynomial in the roots of unity. In the case of manifolds with boundary our invariant is a (sequence of) finite dimensional complex linear operators. This produces from each root of unity q a 3-dimensional topological quantum field theory (see [A1]). In particular, for each q we associate with every closed oriented surface a finite dimensional complex linear space. We construct a projective action of the modular group of the surface in this space. Our constructions have been partially inspired by the ideas of E. Witten [Wi] who considered quantum field theory defined by the nonabelian ChernSimons action and applied it to study the topology of 3-manifolds. Using this quantum field theory, Witten has defined (on the physical level of rigor) certain invariants of 3-manifolds and links in 3-manifolds. The constructions of Witten strongly suggested that there may exist a parallel mathematical theory. We believe that our invariants may be viewed as a mathematical realization of the Witten's program.

Abstract:We discuss (arbitrary-dimensional) Lorentzian manifolds and the scalar polynomial curvature invariants constructed from the Riemann tensor and its covariant derivatives. Recently, we have shown that in four dimensions a Lorentzian spacetime metric is either $\mathcal{I}$-non-degenerate, and hence locally characterized by its scalar polynomial curvature invariants, or is a degenerate Kundt spacetime. We present a number of results that generalize these results to higher dimensions and discuss their consequences and potential physical applications.

Abstract:We introduce an atlas of algebro-geometric objects associated with image formation in pinhole cameras. The nodes of the atlas are algebraic varieties or their vanishing ideals related to each other by projection or elimination and restriction or specialization respectively. This atlas offers a unifying framework for the study of problems in 3D computer vision. We initiate the study of the atlas by completely characterizing a part of the atlas stemming from the triangulation problem. We conclude with several open problems and generalizations of the atlas.

Abstract:This note is a sequel to our earlier paper of the same title [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="dg-ga/9710001" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/dg-ga/9710001">dg-ga/9710001</a>] and describes invariants of rational homology 3-spheres associated to acyclic orthogonal local systems. Our work is in the spirit of the Axelrod-Singer papers, generalizes some of their results, and furnishes a new setting for the purely topological implications of their work.

Abstract:We explicitly derive the Christoffel symbols in terms of adapted frame fields for the Levi-Civita connection of a Lorentzian $n$-manifold $(M, g)$, equipped with a prescribed optical geometry of Kähler-Sasaki type. The formulas found in this paper have several important applications, such as determining the geometric invariants of Lorentzian manifolds with prescribed optical geometries or solving curvature constraints.

Inverse Problems

Abstract:Inverse problems, which are related to Maxwell's equations, in the presence of nonlinear materials is a quite new topic in the literature. The lack of contributions in this area can be ascribed to the significant challenges that such problems pose. Retrieving the spatial behaviour of some unknown physical property, from boundary measurements, is a nonlinear and highly ill-posed problem even in the presence of linear materials. Furthermore, this complexity grows exponentially in the presence of nonlinear materials. In the tomography of linear materials, the Monotonicity Principle (MP) is the foundation of a class of non-iterative algorithms able to guarantee excellent performances and compatibility with real-time applications. Recently, the MP has been extended to nonlinear materials under very general assumptions. Starting from the theoretical background for this extension, we develop a first real-time inversion method for the inverse obstacle problem in the presence of nonlinear materials. The proposed method is intendend for all problems governed by the quasilinear Laplace equation, i.e. static problems involving nonlinear materials. In this paper, we provide some preliminary results which give the foundation of our method and some extended numerical examples.

Invariants of links and 3-manifolds from graph configurations

Abstract:In this self-contained book, following Edward Witten, Maxim Kontsevich, Greg Kuperberg and Dylan Thurston, we define an invariant Z of framed links in rational homology 3-spheres, and we study its properties. The invariant Z, which is often called the perturbative expansion of the Chern-Simons theory, is valued in a graded space generated by Jacobi diagrams. It counts embeddings of this kind of unitrivalent graphs in the ambient manifold, in a sense that is explained in the book, using integrals over configuration spaces, or, in a dual way, algebraic intersections in the same configuration spaces. When the ambient manifold is the standard 3-sphere, the invariant Z is a universal Vassiliev link invariant studied by many authors including Guadagnini, Martellini and Mintchev, Bar-Natan, Bott and Taubes, Altschüler and Freidel, Thurston and Poirier... This book contains a more flexible definition of this invariant. We extend Z to a functor on a category of framed tangles in rational homology cylinders and we describe the behaviour of this functor under various operations including some cabling operations. We also compute iterated derivatives of our extended invariant with respect to the discrete derivatives associated to the main theories of finite type invariants. Together with recent results of Massuyeau and Moussard, our computations imply that the restriction of Z to rational homology 3-spheres (equipped with empty links) contains the same information as the Le-Murakami-Ohtsuki LMO invariant for these manifolds. They also imply that the degree one part of Z is the Casson-Walker invariant.

Einstein manifolds with optical geometries of Kerr type

Abstract:We classify the Ricci flat Lorentzian $n$-manifolds satisfying three particular conditions, encoding and combining some crucial features of the Kerr metrics and the Robinson-Trautman optical structures. We prove that: (a) If $n>4$, there is no Lorentzian manifold satisfying the considered Kerr type conditions, in unexpected contrast with what occurs for the metrics satisfying (very similar) Taub-NUT type conditions; (b) If $n=4$ there are two large classes of such Kerr type manifolds. Each class consists of manifolds fibering over open Riemann surfaces, equipped with a metric of constant Gaussian curvature $\kappa = 1$ or $\kappa = -1$. The first class includes a three parameter family of metrics admitting real analytic extensions to $(\mathbb R^3 \setminus\{0\}) \times \mathbb R = (S^2 \times \mathbb R_+) \times \mathbb R$ and a large class of other metrics not admitting this kind of extensions. The metrics of this first class admitting such extensions are all isometric to the well known Kerr metrics, with the three parameters corresponding to the three space-like components of the angular momentum of the gravitational field. The second class contains a subclass of metrics defined on $\big(\mathbb D\times \mathbb R_+\big)\times \mathbb R$, where $\mathbb D$ is the Lobachevsky Poincaré disc. This subclass is in bijection with the holomorphic functions on $\mathbb D$ satisfying an appropriate open condition. These and other results are consequences of a very simple way to construct totally explicit examples of Ricci flat Lorentzian manifolds.

A theory of frequency domain invariants: spherical harmonic identities for BRDF/lighting transfer and image consistency

Abstract:This paper develops a theory of frequency domain invariants in computer vision. We derive novel identities using spherical harmonics, which are the angular frequency domain analog to common spatial domain invariants such as reflectance ratios. These invariants are derived from the spherical harmonic convolution framework for reflection from a curved surface. Our identities apply in a number of canonical cases, including single and multiple images of objects under the same and different lighting conditions. One important case we consider is two different glossy objects in two different lighting environments. For this case, we derive a novel identity, independent of the specific lighting configurations or BRDFs, that allows us to directly estimate the fourth image if the other three are available. The identity can also be used as an invariant to detecttampering in the images. While this paper is primarily theoretical, it has the potential to lay the mathematical foundations for two important practical applications. First, we can develop more general algorithms for inverse rendering problems, which can directly relight and change material properties by transferring the BRDF or lighting from another object or illumination. Second, we can check the consistency of an image, to detect tampering or image splicing.
Asymptotically multiplicative quantum invariants

Abstract:The Euler characteristic and the volume are two best-known multiplicative invariants of manifolds under finite covers. On the other hand, quantum invariants of 3-manifolds are not multiplicative. We show that a perturbative power series, introduced by Dimofte and the first author and shown to be a topological invariant of cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds by Storzer--Wheeler and the first author, and conjectured to agree with the asymptotics of the Kashaev invariant to all orders in perturbation theory, is asymptotically multiplicative under cyclic covers. Moreover, its coefficients are determined by polynomials constructed out of twisted Neumann--Zagier data. This gives a new $t$-deformation of the perturbative quantum invariants, different than the $x$-deformation obtained by deforming the geometric representation. We illustrate our results with several hyperbolic knots.

Abstract:We introduce a novel approach that employs techniques from noncommutative Poisson geometry to comprehend the algebra of invariants of two $n\times n$ matrices. We entirely solve the open problem of computing the algebra of invariants of two $4 \times 4$ matrices. As an application, we derive the complete description of the invariant commuting variety of $4 \times 4$ matrices and the fourth Calogero-Moser space.

Radio Continuum Morphology of Southern Seyfert Galaxies

Abstract:We present radio observations for 29 southern Seyfert galaxies selected from a volume limited sample with cz<3600 km s^-1, and declination delta<0degr. Objects with declination -30degr<delta<0degr were observed with the Very Large Array (VLA) at 6 cm (4.9 GHz) and objects with delta<-30degr were observed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) at 3.5 cm (8.6 GHz). Both the VLA and the ATCA observations have a resolution of ~1arcsec. These new observations cover more than 50% of the southern sample with all but two of the 29 objects detected above our limit of 0.15 mJy. Combining these data with data available from the literature gives almost 85% coverage of the southern sample and further expands the radio observations of a distance limited sample by 22%. Collecting additional sources from the literature, consisting of known Seyferts with cz < 4600 km s^-1, we find that 38% of the sources are unresolved at arcsecond resolution, and 34% have linear radio structure. Our results expand upon and are consistent with earlier studies. We confirm a correlation between the size of the radio structure and the radio luminosity. A comparison between Seyfert types 1 and 2 finds that type 2s tend to have a larger linear size. There is no statistically significant difference in radio power between types 1 and 2, although all the most powerful objects appear to be Seyfert 2's. No significant difference has been found in the spectral indices.
