Abstract:A representation number is a function which expresses the number of ways an integer can be written as a sum of elements of chosen sets. One of the oldest number-theoretic results on representation numbers is Fermat's theorem which says that an odd prime can be written as a sum of two squares in exactly $0$ or $2$ ways (if order of summands is important). In this dissertation, we discuss a selection of methods from modern analytic number theory and apply them to study asymptotics of certain representation numbers. In particular, we work through an argument in the recent paper "The multiplication table constant and sums of two squares" by Granville, Sabuncu and Sedunova to obtain upper bounds on higher moments of the number of ways of writing $n$ as the sum of a square and a square of a prime. We then use the method from the paper to obtain new results on moments of representation numbers where ``prime'' is replaced by ``sum of two squares''.

Abstract:In recent years, sum-product estimates in Euclidean space and finite fields have been studied using a variety of combinatorial, number theoretic and analytic methods. Erdos type problems involving the distribution of distances, areas and volumes have also received much attention. In this paper we prove a relatively straightforward function version of an incidence results for points and planes previously established in \cite{HI07} and \cite{HIKR07}. As a consequence of our methods, we obtain sharp or near sharp results on the distribution of volumes determined by subsets of vector spaces over finite fields and the associated arithmetic expressions. In particular, our machinery enables us to prove that if $E \subset {\Bbb F}_q^d$, $d \ge 4$, the $d$-dimensional vector space over a finite field ${\Bbb F}_q$, of size much greater than $q^{\frac{d}{2}}$, and if $E$ is a product set, then the set of volumes of $d$-dimensional parallelepipeds determined by $E$ covers ${\Bbb F}_q$. This result is sharp as can be seen by taking $E$ to equal to $A \times A \times ... \times A$, where $A$ is a sub-field of ${\Bbb F}_q$ of size $\sqrt{q}$. In three dimensions we establish the same result if $|E| \gtrsim q^{15/8}$. We prove in three dimensions that the set of volumes covers a positive proportion of ${\Bbb F}_q$ if $|E| \ge Cq^{3/2}$. Finally we show that in three dimensions the set of volumes covers a positive proportion of ${\Bbb F}_q$ if $|E| \ge Cq^2$, without any further assumptions on $E$, which is again sharp as taking $E$ to be a 2-plane through the origin shows.

As an application of the above considerations we give a proof of a weak version of the Shafarevich Conjecture.

Abstract:We prove a range of new sum-product type growth estimates over a general field $\mathbb{F}$, in particular the special case $\mathbb{F}=\mathbb{F}_p$. They are unified by the theme of "breaking the $3/2$ threshold", epitomising the previous state of the art. These estimates stem from specially suited applications of incidence bounds over $\mathbb{F}$, which apply to higher moments of representation functions. We establish the estimate $|R[A]| \gtrsim |A|^{8/5}$ for cardinality of the set $R[A]$ of distinct cross-ratios defined by triples of elements of a (sufficiently small if $\mathbb{F}$ has positive characteristic, similarly for the rest of the estimates) set $A\subset \mathbb{F}$, pinned at infinity. The cross-ratio naturally arises in various sum-product type questions of projective nature and is the unifying concept underlying most of our results. It enables one to take advantage of its symmetry properties as an onset of growth of, for instance, products of difference sets. The geometric nature of the cross-ratio enables us to break the version of the above threshold for the minimum number of distinct triangle areas $Ouu'$, defined by points $u,u'$ of a non-collinear point set $P\subset \mathbb{F}^2$. Another instance of breaking the threshold is showing that if $A$ is sufficiently small and has additive doubling constant $M$, then $|AA|\gtrsim M^{-2}|A|^{14/9}$. This result has a second moment version, which allows for new upper bounds for the number of collinear point triples in the set $A\times A\subset \mathbb{F}^2$, the quantity often arising in applications of geometric incidence estimates.

Abstract:We improve a previous sum--products estimates in R, namely, we obtain that max{|A+A|,|AA|} \gg |A|^{4/3+c}, where c any number less than 5/9813. New lower bounds for sums of sets with small the product set are found. Also we prove some pure energy sum--products results, improving a result of Balog and Wooley, in particular.

Abstract:In additive combinatorics, Erdös-Szemerédi Conjecture is an important conjecture. It can be applied to many fields, such as number theory, harmonic analysis, incidence geometry, and so on. Additionally, its statement is quite easy to understand, while it is still an open problem. In this dissertation, we investigate the Erdös-Szemerédi Conjecture and its relationship with several well-known results in incidence geometry, such as the Szemerédi-Trotter Incidence Theorem. We first study these problems in the setting of real numbers and focus on the proofs by Elekes and Solymosi on sum-product estimates. After introducing these theorems, our main focus is the Erdös-Szemerédi Conjecture in the setting of $\mathbb{F}_p$. We aim to adapt several ingenious techniques developed for real numbers to the case of finite fields. Finally, we obtain a result in estimating the number of bisectors over the ring $\mathbb{Z}/p^3\mathbb{Z}$ with $p$ a $4n+3$ prime.

Abstract:We prove two conjectures regarding the representation growth of groups of type $A_2$. The first, conjectured by Avni, Klopsch, Onn and Voll, regards the uniformity of representation zeta functions over local complete discrete valuation rings. The second is the Larsen--Lubotzky conjecture on the representation growth of irreducible lattices in groups of type $A_2$ in positive characteristic assuming Serre's conjecture on the congruence subgroup problem.

Apéry-Like Sums and Colored Multiple Zeta Values

Abstract:In this article we shall survey some recent progress on the study of Apéry-like sums which are multiple variable generalizations of the two sums Apéry used in his famous proof of the irrationality of $\zeta(2)$ and $\zeta(3)$. We only allow the central binomial coefficients to appear in these infinite sums but they can appear either on the numerator or on the denominator. Special values of both types are closely related to the colored multiple zeta values and have played important roles in the calculations of the $\eps$-expansion of multiloop Feynman diagrams. We will summarize several different approaches to computing these sums and prove a few conjectural identities of Z.-W. Sun as corollaries along the way.

Abstract:We obtain a bounded generation theorem over $\mathcal O/\mathfrak a$, where $\mathcal O$ is the ring of integers of a number field and $\mathfrak a$ a general ideal of $\mathcal O$. This addresses a conjecture of Salehi-Golsefidy. Along the way, we obtain nontrivial bounds for additive character sums over $\mathcal O/\mathcal P^n$ for a prime ideal $\mathcal P$ with the aid of certain sum-product estimates.

Abstract:During the last decade the Subspace Theorem found several quite unexpected applications, mainly in the Diophantine Analysis and in the Transcendence Theory. Among the great variety of spectacular results, I have chosen several which are technically simpler and which allow one to appreciate how miraculously does the Subspace Theorem emerge in numerous situations, implying beautiful solutions to difficult problems hardly anybody hoped to solve so easily. The three main topics discussed in this article are: the work of Adamczewski and Bugeaud on complexity of algebraic numbers; the work of Corvaja and Zannier on Diophantine equations with power sums; the work of Corvaja and Zannier on integral points on curves and surfaces, and the subsequent development due to Levin and Autissier. In particular, we give a complete proof of the beautiful theorem of Levin and Autissier: an affine surface with 4 (or more) properly intersecting ample divisors at infinity cannot have a Zariski dense set of integral points.

Abstract:In this paper we study representations of natural numbers by weighted sums of powers and pose some new conjectures in this direction.For example,we show that there are essentially only 9 polynomials of the form awh + bxi + cyj + dzk with a,b,c,d positive integers,h,i,j,k ∈ {2,3,4,...} and at most one of h,i,j,k equal to two,for which it seems that each n ∈ N ={0,1,2,...} can be written as awh+bxi+cyj+dzk with w,x,y,z ∈ N.One of our conjectures states that {f(w,x,y,z):w,x,y,z ∈ N} =N whenever f(w,x,y,z) is among the 9 polynomials w2 + x3 + 2y3 + cz3 (c =3,4,5,6),w2 + x3 + 2y3 + dz4 (d =1,3,6),2w2 + x3 + 4y3 + z4 and w2 + x3 + y4 + 2z4.We also conjecture that any integer n ＞ 1 can be written as x4 + y3 + z2 + 2k with x,y,z ∈ N and k ∈ {1,2,3,...}.
Growth Problems for Representations of Finite Groups

Abstract:We compute (exact and asymptotic) formulas for the growth rate of the number of indecomposable summands in the tensor powers of representations of finite groups, over a field of arbitrary characteristic. In characteristic zero, we obtain in addition a general exact formula for the growth rate and give a complete solution to the growth problems in terms of the character table. We also provide code used to compute our formulas.

Abstract:Zero-sum problems on abelian groups, subset sums in a field and covers of the integers by residue classes, are three different active topics initiated by P. Erdýos more than 40 years ago and investigated by many researchers separately since then. In an earlier announcement (Electron. Res. Announc. Amer. Math. Soc. 9(2003), 51-60), the author claimed some connections among these seemingly unrelated fas- cinating areas. In this paper we establish the surprising connections for the first time and present a further unified approach. For example, we extend the famous Erdýos-Ginzburg-Ziv theorem in the following way: If {as(mod ns)} k=1 covers each integer either exactly 2q −1 times or exactly 2q times where q is a prime power, then for any c1, . . . , ck ∈ Z/qZ there exists an I ⊆ {1, . . . , k} such that P s2I 1/ns = q and P s2I cs = 0. Our main theorems in this paper unify many results in the three realms and also have applications in finite fields and graph theory.

Abstract:We obtain new bounds on some trilinear and quadrilinear character sums, which are non-trivial starting from very short ranges of the variables. An application to an apparently new problem on oscillations of characters on differences between Farey fractions is given. Other applications include a modular analogue of a multiplicative hybrid problem of Iwaniec and Sárközy (1987) and the solvability of some prime type equations with constraints.

Restricted sumsets in multiplicative subgroups

Abstract:We establish the restricted sumset analogue of the celebrated conjecture of Sárközy on additive decompositions of the set of nonzero squares over a finite field. More precisely, we show that if $q>13$ is an odd prime power, then the set of nonzero squares in $\mathbb{F}_q$ cannot be written as a restricted sumset $A \hat{+} A$, extending a result of Shkredov. More generally, we study restricted sumsets in multiplicative subgroups over finite fields as well as restricted sumsets in perfect powers (over integers) motivated by a question of Erdős and Moser. We also prove an analogue of van Lint-MacWilliams' conjecture for restricted sumsets, which appears to be the first analogue of Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem in a family of Cayley sum graphs.

Parallelisation of partial differential equations via representation theory

Abstract:A little utilised but fundamental fact is that if one discretises a partial differential equation using a symmetry-adapted basis corresponding to so-called irreducible representations, the basic building blocks in representational theory, then the resulting linear system can be completely decoupled into smaller independent linear systems. That is, representation theory can be used to trivially parallelise the numerical solution of partial differential equations. This beautiful theory is introduced via a crash course in representation theory aimed at its practical utilisation, its connection with decomposing expansions in polynomials into different symmetry classes, and give examples of solving Schrödinger's equation on simple symmetric geometries like squares and cubes where there is as much as four-fold increase in the number of independent linear systems, each of a significantly smaller dimension than results from standard bases.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the asymptotics of multiplicities of irreducible representations in large tensor products of finite dimensional representations of simple Lie algebras and their statistics with respect to Plancherel and character probability measures. We derive the asymptotic distribution of irreducible components for the Plancherel measure, generalizing results of Biane and Tate and Zelditch. We also derive the asymptotics of the character measure for generic parameters and an intermediate scaling in the vicinity of the Plancherel measure. It is interesting that the asymptotic measure is universal and after suitable renormalization does not depend on which representations were multiplied but depends significantly on the degeneracy of the parameter in the character distribution.

Quantum Algorithms for Representation-Theoretic Multiplicities

Abstract:Kostka, Littlewood-Richardson, Plethysm and Kronecker coefficients are the multiplicities of irreducible representations in decomposition of representations of the symmetric group that play an important role in representation theory and algebraic combinatorics. We give quantum algorithms for computing these coefficients whenever the ratio of dimensions of the representations is polynomial and study the computational complexity of this problem. We show that there is an efficient classical algorithm for computing the Kostka numbers under this restriction and conjecture the existence of an analogous algorithm for the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. We argue why such classical algorithm does not straightforwardly work for the Plethysm and Kronecker coefficients and conjecture that our quantum algorithms lead to superpolynomial speedups for this problem. We support this conjecture by showing how our quantum algorithm avoids some hardness obstructions in computation of these coefficients. We give another quantum algorithm that estimates the multiplicities using induction and has a different cost-to-input dependence.
