Abstract:We prove that for every ordered matching $H$ on $t$ vertices, if an ordered $n$-vertex graph $G$ is $\varepsilon$-far from being $H$-free, then $G$ contains $\text{poly}(\varepsilon) n^t$ copies of $H$. This proves a special case of a conjecture of Tomon and the first author. We also generalize this statement to uniform hypergraphs.

Abstract:The matching polytope of a graph $G$ is the convex hull of the indicator vectors of the matchings on $G$. We characterize the graphs whose associated matching polytopes are Gorenstein, and then prove that all Gorenstein matching polytopes possess the integer decomposition property. As a special case study, we examine the matching polytopes of wheel graphs and show that they are not Gorenstein, but do possess the integer decomposition property.

The Tight Cut Decomposition of Matching Covered Uniformable Hypergraphs

Abstract:The perfect matching polytope, i.e. the convex hull of (incidence vectors of) perfect matchings of a graph is used in many combinatorial algorithms. Kotzig, Lovász and Plummer developed a decomposition theory for graphs with perfect matchings and their corresponding polytopes known as the tight cut decomposition which breaks down every graph into a number of indecomposable graphs, so called bricks. For many properties that are of interest on graphs with perfect matchings, including the description of the perfect matching polytope, it suffices to consider these bricks. A key result by Lovász on the tight cut decomposition is that the list of bricks obtained is the same independent of the choice of tight cuts made during the tight cut decomposition procedure. This implies that finding a tight cut decomposition is polynomial time equivalent to finding a single tight cut. We generalise the notions of a tight cut, a tight cut contraction and a tight cut decomposition to hypergraphs. By providing an example, we show that the outcome of the tight cut decomposition on general hypergraphs is no longer unique. However, we are able to prove that the uniqueness of the tight cut decomposition is preserved on a slight generalisation of uniform hypergraphs. Moreover, we show how the tight cut decomposition leads to a decomposition of the perfect matching polytope of uniformable hypergraphs and that the recognition problem for tight cuts in uniformable hypergraphs is polynomial time solvable.

Abstract:In a recent paper, Beniamini and Nisan gave a closed-form formula for the unique multilinear polynomial for the Boolean function determining whether a given bipartite graph $G \subseteq K_{n,n}$ has a perfect matching, together with an efficient algorithm for computing the coefficients of the monomials of this polynomial. We give the following generalization: Given an arbitrary non-negative weight function $w$ on the edges of $K_{n,n}$, consider its set of minimum weight perfect matchings. We give the real multilinear polynomial for the Boolean function which determines if a graph $G \subseteq K_{n,n}$ contains one of these minimum weight perfect matchings.

Abstract:This paper contains a description of a connection between the matching arrangement and the matching polyhedron. A bijection between regions of the matching arragement and LP-orientations of the matching polyhedron is constructed. This bijection allows to calculate the number of LP-orientations of the matching polyhedron with the characteristic polynomial of the matching arrangement.

Abstract:A subset S of vertices of a graph G is called a perfectly matchable set of G if the subgraph induced by S contains a perfect matching. The perfectly matchable set polynomial of G , first made explicit by Ohsugi and Tsuchiya, is the (ordinary) generating function p(G;z) for the number of perfectly matchable sets of G . In this work, we provide explicit recurrences for computing p(G;z) for an arbitrary (simple) graph and use these to compute the Ehrhart h⁎ -polynomials for certain lattice polytopes. Namely, we show that p(G;z) is the h⁎ -polynomial for certain classes of stable set polytopes, whose vertices correspond to stable sets of G .

Abstract:Let $\h$ be a connected $k$-graph with maximum degree ${\Delta}\geq 2$ and let $\mu(\h, x)$ be the matching polynomial of $\h$. In this paper, we focus on studying the distribution of zeros of the matching polynomials of $k$-graphs. We prove that the zeros (with multiplicities) of $\mu(\h, x)$ are invariant under a rotation of an angle $2\pi/{\ell}$ in the complex plane for some positive integer $\ell$ and $k$ is the maximum integer with this property. Let $\lambda(\h)$ denote the maximum modulus of all zeros of $\mu(\h, x)$. We show that $\lambda(\h)$ is a simple root of $\mu(\h, x)$ and $$\Delta^{1\over k} \leq \lambda(\h)< \frac{k}{k-1}\big((k-1)(\Delta-1)\big)^{1\over k}.$$ To achieve these, we introduce the path tree $\T(\h,u)$ of $\h$ with respect to a vertex $u$ of $\h$, which is a $k$-tree, and prove that $$\frac{\mu(\h-u,x)}{\mu(\h, x)} = \frac{\mu(\T(\h,u)-u,x) }{\mu(\T(\h,u),x)},$$ which generalizes the celebrated Godsil's identity on the matching polynomial of graphs.

Abstract:We prove that the combinatorial concept of a special matching can be used to compute the parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of doubly laced Coxeter groups and of dihedral Coxeter groups. In particular, for this class of groups which includes all Weyl groups, our results generalize to the parabolic setting the main results in [Advances in Math. {202} (2006), 555-601]. As a consequence, the parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial indexed by $u$ and $v$ depends only on the poset structure of the Bruhat interval from the identity element to $v$ and on which elements of that interval are minimal coset representatives.

Abstract:We consider, for complete bipartite graphs, the convex hulls of characteristic vectors of all matchings, extended by a binary entry indicating whether the matching contains two specific edges. This polytope is associated with the quadratic matching problem with a single linearized quadratic term. We provide a complete irredundant inequality description, which settles a conjecture by Klein [ Combinatorial Optimization with One Quadratic Term , Ph.D. thesis, TU Dortmund, Dortmund, Germany]. In addition, we also derive facetness and separation results for the polytopes. The completeness proof is based on a geometric relationship to a matching polytope of a nonbipartite graph. Using standard techniques, we finally extend the result to capacitated $b$-matchings.

Abstract:Let $M_k$ be a $2n$-vertex graph with $n$ pairwise disjoint edges and let $\mathcal{H}^{(p,s)}(n)$ be the family of subsets of $V(M_n)$ that span exactly $p$ edges and $s$ isolated vertices. We prove that for $n\ge 2p+s$ this family has the Erdős--Ko--Rado property: the size of the largest intersecting family equals to the number of sets containing a fixed vertex. The bound $n\ge 2p+s$ is the best possible, improving a recent theorem with $n\ge 2p+2s$ by Fuentes and Kamat.

Abstract:The matroid parity (MP) problem is a powerful (and NP-hard) extension of the matching problem. Whereas matching polytopes are well understood, little is known about MP polytopes. We prove that, when the matroid is laminar, the MP polytope is affinely congruent to a perfect b-matching polytope. From this we deduce that, even when the matroid is not laminar, every Chvátal–Gomory cut for the MP polytope can be derived as a {0,12}-cut from a laminar family of rank constraints. We also prove a negative result concerned with the integrality gap of two linear relaxations of the MP problem.

In this paper we consider some parameters related to the matching of regular graphs. We find the sixth coefficient of the matching polynomial of regular graphs. As a consequence, every cubic graph of order $10$ is matching unique.

Abstract:For a given hypergraph $H$ and a vertex $v\in V(H)$, consider a random matching $M$ chosen uniformly from the set of all matchings in $H.$ In $1995,$ Kahn conjectured that if $H$ is a $d$-regular linear $k$-uniform hypergraph, the probability that $M$ does not cover $v$ is $(1 + o_d(1))d^{-1/k}$ for all vertices $v\in V(H).$ This conjecture was proved for $k = 2$ by Kahn and Kim in $1998.$ In this paper, we disprove this conjecture for all $k \geq 3.$ For infinitely many values of $d,$ we construct $d$-regular linear $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ containing two vertices $v_1$ and $v_2$ such that $\mathcal{P}(v_1 \notin M) = 1 - \frac{(1 + o_d(1))}{d^{k-2}}$ and $\mathcal{P}(v_2 \notin M) = \frac{(1 + o_d(1))}{d+1}.$ The gap between $\mathcal{P}(v_1 \notin M)$ and $\mathcal{P}(v_2 \notin M)$ in this $H$ is best possible. In the course of proving this, we also prove a hypergraph analog of Godsil's result on matching polynomials and paths in graphs, which is of independent interest.

Dimer face polynomials in knot theory and cluster algebras

Abstract:The set of perfect matchings of a connected bipartite plane graph $G$ has the structure of a distributive lattice, as shown by Propp, where the partial order is induced by the height of a matching. In this article, our focus is the dimer face polynomial of $G$, which is the height generating function of all perfect matchings of $G$. We connect the dimer face polynomial on the one hand to knot theory, and on the other to cluster algebras. We show that certain dimer face polynomials are multivariate generalizations of Alexander polynomials of links, highlighting another combinatorial view of the Alexander polynomial. We also show that an arbitrary dimer face polynomial is an $F$-polynomial in the cluster algebra whose initial quiver is dual to the graph $G$. As a result, we recover a recent representation theoretic result of Bazier-Matte and Schiffler that connects $F$-polynomials and Alexander polynomials, albeit from a very different, dimer-based perspective. As another application of our results, we also show that all nonvanishing Plücker coordinates on open positroid varieties are cluster monomials.

An efficient asymmetric removal lemma and its limitations

Abstract:The triangle removal states that if $G$ contains $\varepsilon n^2$ edge-disjoint triangles, then $G$ contains $\delta(\varepsilon)n^3$ triangles. Unfortunately, there are no sensible bounds on the order of growth of $\delta(\varepsilon)$, and at any rate, it is known that $\delta(\varepsilon)$ is not polynomial in $\varepsilon$. Csaba recently obtained an asymmetric variant of the triangle removal, stating that if $G$ contains $\varepsilon n^2$ edge-disjoint triangles, then $G$ contains $2^{-\mathrm{poly}(1/\varepsilon)}\cdot n^5$ copies of $C_5$. To this end, he devised a new variant of Szemerédi's regularity lemma. We obtain the following results: - We first give a regularity-free proof of Csaba's theorem, which improves the number of copies of $C_5$ to the optimal number $\mathrm{poly}(\varepsilon)\cdot n^5$. - We say that $H$ is $K_3$-abundant if every graph containing $\varepsilon n^2$ edge-disjoint triangles has $\mathrm{poly}(\varepsilon)\cdot n^{|V(H)|}$ copies of $H$. It is easy to see that a $K_3$-abundant graph must be triangle-free and tripartite. Given our first result, it is natural to ask if all triangle-free tripartite graphs are $K_3$-abundant. Our second result is that assuming a well-known conjecture of Ruzsa in additive number theory, the answer to this question is negative. Our proofs use a mix of combinatorial, number-theoretic, probabilistic, and Ramsey-type arguments.

A polynomial kernel for vertex deletion into bipartite permutation graphs

Abstract:A permutation graph can be defined as an intersection graph of segments whose endpoints lie on two parallel lines $\ell_1$ and $\ell_2$, one on each. A bipartite permutation graph is a permutation graph which is bipartite. In the the bipartite permutation vertex deletion problem we ask for a given $n$-vertex graph, whether we can remove at most $k$ vertices to obtain a bipartite permutation graph. This problem is NP-complete but it does admit an FPT algorithm parameterized by $k$. In this paper we study the kernelization of this problem and show that it admits a polynomial kernel with $O(k^{62})$ vertices.

$θ$-free matching covered graphs

Abstract:A nontrivial connected graph is matching covered if each edge belongs to some perfect matching. For most problems pertaining to perfect matchings, one may restrict attention to matching covered graphs; thus, there is extensive literature on them. A cornerstone of this theory is an ear decomposition result due to Lovász and Plummer. Their theorem is a fundamental problem-solving tool, and also yields interesting open problems; we discuss two such problems below, and we solve one of them. A subgraph $H$ of a graph $G$ is conformal if $G-V(H)$ has a perfect matching. This notion is intrinsically related to the aforementioned ear decomposition theorem -- which implies that each matching covered graph (apart from $K_2$ and even cycles) contains a conformal bisubdivision of $\theta$, or a conformal bisubdivision of $K_4$, possibly both. (Here, $\theta$ refers to the graph with two vertices joined by three edges.) This immediately leads to two problems: characterize $\theta$-free (likewise, $K_4$-free) matching covered graphs. A characterization of planar $K_4$-free matching covered graphs was obtained by Kothari and Murty [J. Graph Theory, 82 (1), 2016]; the nonplanar case is open. We provide a characterization of $\theta$-free matching covered graphs that immediately implies a poly-time algorithm for the corresponding decision problem. Our characterization relies heavily on a seminal result due to Edmonds, Lovász and Pulleyblank [Combinatorica, 2, 1982] pertaining to the tight cut decomposition theory of matching covered graphs. As corollaries, we provide two upper bounds on the size of a $\theta$-free graph, namely, $m\leq 2n-1$ and $m\leq \frac{3n}{2}+b-1$, where $b$ denotes the number of bricks obtained in any tight cut decomposition of the graph; for each bound, we provide a characterization of the tight examples. The Petersen graph and $K_4$ play key roles in our results.

Counting Matchings via Capacity Preserving Operators

Abstract:The notion of the capacity of a polynomial was introduced by Gurvits around 2005, originally to give drastically simplified proofs of the Van der Waerden lower bound for permanents of doubly stochastic matrices and Schrijver's inequality for perfect matchings of regular bipartite graphs. Since this seminal work, the notion of capacity has been utilized to bound various combinatorial quantities and to give polynomial-time algorithms to approximate such quantities (e.g., the number of bases of a matroid). These types of results are often proven by giving bounds on how much a particular differential operator can change the capacity of a given polynomial. In this paper, we unify the theory surrounding such capacity preserving operators by giving tight capacity preservation bounds for all nondegenerate real stability preservers. We then use this theory to give a new proof of a recent result of Csikvári, which settled Friedland's lower matching conjecture.

Two Erdos-Hajnal-type theorems for forbidden order-size pairs

Abstract:The celebrated Erdős-Hajnal conjecture says that any graph without a fixed induced subgraph $H$ contains a very large homogeneous set. A direct analog of this conjecture is not true for hypergraphs. In this paper we present two natural variants of this problem which do hold for hypergraphs. We show that for every $r \geq 3$, $m \geq m_0(r)$ and $0 \leq f \leq \binom{m}{r}$, if an $r$-graph $G$ does not contain $m$ vertices spanning exactly $f$ edges, then $G$ contains much bigger homogeneous sets than what is guaranteed to exist in general $r$-graphs. We also prove that if a $3$-graph $G$ does not contain homogeneous sets of polynomial size, then for every $m \geq 3$ there are $\Omega(m^3)$ values of $f$ such that $G$ contains $m$ vertices spanning exactly $f$ edges. This makes progress on a problem of Axenovich, Bradač, Gishboliner, Mubayi and Weber.

Multilevel polynomial partitioning and semialgebraic hypergraphs: regularity, Turán, and Zarankiewicz results

Abstract:We prove three main results about semialgebraic hypergraphs. First, we prove an optimal and oblivious regularity lemma. Fox, Pach, and Suk proved that the class of $k$-uniform semialgebraic hypergraphs satisfies a very strong regularity lemma where the vertex set can be partitioned into $\mathrm{poly}(1/\varepsilon)$ parts so that all but an $\varepsilon$-fraction of $k$-tuples of parts are homogeneous (either complete or empty). Our result improves the number of parts in the partition to $O_{d,k}((D/\varepsilon)^{d})$ where $d$ is the dimension of the ambient space and $D$ is a measure of the complexity of the hypergraph; additionally, the partition is oblivious to the edge set of the hypergraph. We give examples that show that the dependence on both $\varepsilon$ and $D$ is optimal. From this regularity lemma we deduce the best-known Turán-type result for semialgebraic hypergraphs. Third, we prove a Zarankiewicz-type result for semialgebraic hypergraphs. Previously Fox, Pach, Sheffer, Suk, and Zahl showed that a $K_{u,u}$-free semialgebraic graph on $N$ vertices has at most $O_{d,D,u}(N^{2d/(d+1)+o(1)})$ edges and Do extended this result to $K_{u,\ldots,u}^{(k)}$-free semialgebraic hypergraphs. We improve upon both of these results by removing the $o(1)$ in the exponent and making the dependence on $D$ and $u$ explicit and polynomial. All three of these results follow from a novel ``multilevel polynomial partitioning scheme'' that efficiently partitions a point set $P\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ via low-complexity semialgebraic pieces. We prove this result using the polynomial method over varieties as developed by Walsh which extends the real polynomial partitioning technique of Guth and Katz. We give additional applications to the unit distance problem, the Erdős--Hajnal problem for semialgebraic graphs, and property testing of semialgebraic hypergraphs.

Abstract:This article proves a conjecture by Zuber about the enumeration of fully packed loops (FPLs). The conjecture states that the number of FPLs whose link pattern consists of two noncrossing matchings which are separated by $m$ nested arches is a polynomial function in $m$ of certain degree and with certain leading coefficient. Contrary to the approach of Caselli, Krattenthaler, Lass and Nadeau (who proved a partial result) we make use of the theory of wheel polynomials developed by Di Francesco, Fonseca and Zinn-Justin. We present a new basis for the vector space of wheel polynomials and a polynomiality theorem in a more general setting. This allows us to finish the proof of Zubers conjecture.
