Abstract:We investigate anomalies in the class of non-local field theories that have been proposed as an ultraviolet completion of 4-D Quantum Field Theory (QFT) with generalizing the kinetic energy operators to an infinite series of higher derivatives inspired by string field theory and ghost-free non-local approaches to quantum gravity. We explicitly calculate the vector and chiral anomalies in a string-inspired non-local extension of QED. We show that the vector anomaly vanishes as required by gauge-invariance and the Ward identity. On the other hand, although the chiral anomaly vanishes to the leading order with massless fermions, it nonetheless does not vanish with the massive fermions and we calculate it to the leading order in scale of non-locality. We also calculate the non-local vector and axial currents explicitly, and present an illustrative example by applying our results to the decay of \pi_0 \rightarrow \gamma\gamma.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the paper attempts to solve
This paper aims to study the vector and chiral anomalies that emerge in non - local quantum electrodynamics (QED) inspired by string theory. Specifically, the authors explore the following points:
1. **Vector anomaly**:
- The manifestation of the vector anomaly in non - local QED was studied, and it was verified whether it meets the requirements of gauge invariance and Ward identities.
- The results show that in non - local QED, the vector anomaly does disappear, which is consistent with the requirement of gauge invariance.
2. **Chiral anomaly**:
- For massless fermions, the chiral anomaly disappears under the leading - order approximation.
- However, for massive fermions, the chiral anomaly does not disappear under the leading - order approximation, and the authors calculated its leading - order contribution on the non - local scale.
- Further research shows that even in the case of massless fermions, when considering higher - order corrections, the chiral anomaly will not completely disappear.
3. **Non - local vector and axial currents**:
- The vector and axial currents in non - local QED were explicitly calculated, and it was shown how these currents encode all higher - order anomalies.
- Through the leading - order expansion, the specific form of the triangle - diagram anomaly was obtained.
4. **Application examples**:
- The above results were applied to the π0→γγ decay process, the influence of non - local effects on the chiral anomaly was calculated, and the lower limit of the non - local scale was set using experimental data.
### Main findings
- **Vector anomaly**: Whether the fermions are massive or not, the vector anomaly in non - local QED always disappears, and the Ward identities are satisfied.
- **Chiral anomaly**: For massless fermions, the chiral anomaly disappears under the leading - order approximation but still exists under higher - order corrections. For massive fermions, the chiral anomaly does not disappear under the leading - order approximation and has the expected form.
- **Non - local currents**: Non - local vector and axial currents encode all higher - order anomalies, and the triangle - diagram anomaly can be obtained through the leading - order expansion.
- **Experimental constraints**: Through the π0→γγ decay process, a relatively weak lower limit of the non - local scale was set, approximately 57 GeV, far below the LHC limit (approximately 2.5 - 3 TeV).
### Conclusion
Through detailed calculations and analyses, this paper verifies the behaviors of vector and chiral anomalies in non - local QED, further enriches the understanding of non - local field theories, and provides a basis for future research.
