Abstract:It is commonly assumed that fluid cannot slip along a solid surface. The experimental evidence generally supports this assumption. We demonstrate that when the change of the relative velocity of a fluid and a solid wall is sufficiently rapid, the slip does occur; the fluid is unable to adjust if acceleration is large enough, and it slips. We use droplet impact on a moving surface to demonstrate and estimate the slip length. We also estimate fluid acceleration, which is required to cause an observable slip.

Abstract:The velocity slip and temperature jump for a two-dimensional rough plate under hyper-sonic conditions were analyzed using the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo(DSMC)method.Surface roughness was explicitly modeled by introducing various structures on the flat plate.The influences of relative roughness height,which involves the roughness height,roughness spacing,incoming velocity,and the degree of rarefaction,were analyzed and discussed.It is found that with the increase of the relative roughness height,the jump temperature increases,while the slip velocity decreases gradually.The effects of surface roughness on the slip coefficients can be attributed to the change of accommodation coefficients.A new slip model for rough surfaces was established in this paper,which accounts for the coupling effects of gas rarefaction and surface roughness,with-out the effort to model the surface roughness explicitly.The nitrogen flows in the microchannel,and flows over a blunt cone and an axisymmetric bi-conic body,were simulated under the modified and conventional slip boundary conditions,respectively.The numerical solutions were validated with experimental data.It can be safely concluded that compared with the traditional first-order slip boundary conditions,the modified slip model improves the accuracy of macroscopic properties,especially the heat transfer coefficient.

Abstract:The `no-slip' is a fundamental assumption and generally-accepted boundary condition in rheology, tribology and fluid mechanics with strong experimental support. The violations of this condition, however, are widely recognized in many situations, especially in the flow of non-Newtonian fluids. Wall slip could lead to large errors and flow instabilities, such as sharkskin formation and spurt flow, and hence complicates the analysis of fluid systems and introduces serious practical difficulties. In this article, we discuss slip at fluid-solid interface in an attempt to highlight the main issues related to this diverse complex phenomenon and its implications.

Abstract:Experiments on fluid systems in micro-/nano-scale solid conveyors have shown a violation of the no-slip assumption that has been adopted by the classical fluid mechanics. To correct this mechanics for the fluid slip, various approaches have been proposed to determine the slip boundary conditions. However, these approaches have revealed contradictory results for a variety of systems, and a debate on the mechanisms and the conditions of the fluid slip/no-slip past solid surfaces is sustained for a long time. In this paper, we establish the hybrid continuum-molecular modeling (HCMM) as a general approach of modeling the fluid slip flow under the influence of excess fluid–solid molecular interactions. This modeling approach postulates that fluids flow over solid surfaces with/without slip depending on the difference between the applied impulse on the fluid and a drag due to the excess fluid–solid molecular interactions. In the HCMM, the Navier–Stokes equations are corrected for the excess fluid–solid interactions. Measures of the fluid–solid interactions are incorporated into the fluid's viscosity. We demonstrate that the correction of the fluid mechanics by the slip boundary conditions is not an accurate approach, as the fluid–solid interactions would impact the fluid internally. To show the effectiveness of the proposed HCMM, it is implemented for the water flow in nanotubes. The HCMM is validated by an extensive comparison with over 90 cases of experiments and molecular dynamics simulations of different fluid systems. We foresee that the HCMM of the fluid slip flow will find many important implementations in fluid mechanics.

Abstract:A general adsorption model is developed to describe the interactions between near-wall fluid molecules and solid surface. This model serves as a framework for the theoretical modelling of the boundary slip phenomena. Based on this adsorption model, a new general model for the slip velocity of fluids on solid surfaces is introduced. The slip boundary condition at a fluid-solid interface has hitherto been considered separately for gases and liquids. In this paper, we show that the slip velocity in both gases and liquids may originate from dynamical adsorption processes at the interface. A unified analytical model that is valid for both gas-solid and liquid-solid slip boundary conditions is proposed based on surface science theory. The corroboration with experimental data extracted from the literature shows that the proposed model provides an improved prediction compared to existing analytical models for gases at higher shear rates and close agreement for liquid-solid interfaces in general.

Abstract:The analytical solution models have been constructed to describe the slip flow in the micro/nano gaps with moving boundary, including the case of immersion lithography. The two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics models are established to validate them. The results show that the slip flow varies with time and tends to a steady state quickly. The transient and steady states are investigated respectively to overall describe the slip flow, and there are significant differences between the slip and non-slip flow. Moreover, the stationary liquid on moving wall may be generated when the direction of pressure-driven flow is opposite to the direction of shear flow. This phenomenon is important to prevent liquid leakage during wafer scanning, and the corresponding parameters are optimized to improve the quality of advanced immersion lithography. Slip Length in Shear Flow Over a Textured Surface

Abstract:Hydrophobic textured surfaces are studied for their low wettability and their capacity to create a 'slippery' fluid on the surface during lubrication. To this end, the flow between two parallel surfaces is numerically addressed by computing two-dimensional numerical simulations. One of the surfaces moves with a uniform rectilinear motion, while the other is fixed, with a cavity in the middle. The steady-state flow is laminar and monophasic with a low Reynolds number. The reduction of the wall shear stress caused by a vortex in the cavity, with respect to a Couette flow, looks like the creation of an equivalent slip of the fluid on the wall at a macroscopic scale.Three methods are used to calculate the slip length: one is based on the wall shear stress and the other two are based on the speed of the fluid flow. When the slip length is calculated according to these three methods, the obtained results differ. The differences show that the slip often used in the literature is a macroscopic representation of local effects that are not necessarily slippery. The speed profiles and the streamlines are then discussed, in order to propose an explanation for this difference.

Abstract:We study slip boundary conditions for simple fluids at surfaces with nanoscale chemical heterogeneities. Using a perturbative approach, we examine the flow of a Newtonian fluid far from a surface described by a heterogeneous Navier slip boundary condition. In the far-field, we obtain expressions for an effective slip boundary condition in certain limiting cases. These expressions are compared to numerical solutions which show they work well when applied in the appropriate limits. The implications for experimental measurements and for the design of surfaces that exhibit large slip lengths are discussed.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is used to study slip at the fluid-solid boundary in an unsteady flow based on the Stokes’ second problem. An increase in slip is observed in comparison to the steady flow for shear rates below the critical shear rate of the corresponding steady flow. This increased slip is attributed to fluid inertial forces not represented in a steady flow. An unsteady mathematical model for slip is established, which estimates the increment in slip at the boundary. The model shows that slip is also dependent on acceleration in addition to the shear rate of fluid at the wall. By writing acceleration in terms of shear rate, it is shown that slip at the wall in unsteady flows is governed by the gradient of shear rate and shear rate of the fluid. Nondimensionalizing the model gives a time dependent yet universal curve, independent of wall-fluid properties, which can be used to find the slip boundary condition at the fluid-solid interface based on the information of shear rate, gradient of shear rate of the fluid, and the instant of time during the cycle. A governing nondimensional number, defined as the ratio of phase speed to speed of sound, is identified to help in explaining the mechanism responsible for the transition of slip boundary condition from finite to a perfect slip and determining when this would occur. Phase lag in fluid velocity relative to wall is observed. The lag increases with decreasing time period of wall oscillation and increasing wall hydrophobicity. The phenomenon of hysteresis is seen when looking into the variation of slip velocity as a function of wall velocity and slip velocity as a function of fluid shear rate. The cause for hysteresis is attributed to the unsteady inertial forces of the fluid. The rate of heat generated by viscous shear is compared for an unsteady Stokes’ second problem and simple Couette flow and is shown to be higher for the unsteady flow.

Abstract:We model a slip boundary condition at fluid-solid interface of an arbitrary geometry in smoothed particle hydrodynamics and smoothed dissipative particle dynamics simulations. Under an assumption of linear profile of the tangential velocity at quasi-steady state near the interface, an arbitrary slip length b can be specified and correspondingly, an artificial velocity for every boundary particle can be calculated. Therefore, b as an input parameter affects the calculation of dissipative and random forces near the interface. For b→0 , the no-slip is recovered while for b→∞ , the free-slip is achieved. Technically, we devise two different approaches to calculate the artificial velocity of any boundary particle. The first has a succinct principle and is competent for simple geometries, while the second is subtle and affordable for complex geometries. Slip lengths in simulations for both steady and transient flows coincide with the expected ones. As demonstration, we apply the two approaches extensively to simulate curvy channel flows, dynamics of an ellipsoid in pipe flow and flows within complex microvessels, where desired slip lengths at fluid-solid interfaces are prescribed. The proposed methodology may apply equally well to other particle methods such as dissipative particle dynamics and moving particle semi-implicit methods.

Abstract:The slip boundary is usually realized by microstructured surfaces, where primary fluid flows over the microstructures being filled with a secondary immiscible fluid. The char-acteristics of the microstructures and the properties of the secondary fluid have a specific effect on the primary flow, which eventually affects the properties of the slip boundary. The coupled flow of two fluids needs to be considered, although it is challenging to theoretically solve the coupled flow problem. In the current work, we establish a theoretical framework for interfacial coupled flow on a slip boundary over a microstructured surface. Taking shear flow over a periodic microstructured boundary as an example, by finding integral relation between the slip velocity and the slip velocity gradient, we decouple the binary fluid system on the slip boundary and solve the slip problem under the low-Reynolds-number limit. It is found that a small viscosity ratio, large fluid interfacial fraction, or large depth-to-width ratio of a groove will result in a large vorticity flux in the groove, leading to a large slip length. Thus, we propose a method to enhance the slippage by introducing a jet flow in the grooves, which is verified by our theory. The current work provides a new method for theoretically solving the coupled flow problem, which can be extended to cases of high-speed flow.
Effective slip boundary conditions for arbitrary periodic surfaces: The surface mobility tensor

Abstract:In a variety of applications, most notably microfluidic design, slip-based boundary conditions have been sought to characterize fluid flow over patterned surfaces. We focus on laminar shear flows over surfaces with periodic height fluctuations and/or fluctuating Navier scalar slip properties. We derive a general formula for the "effective slip", which describes equivalent fluid motion at the mean surface as depicted by the linear velocity profile that arises far from it. We show that the slip and the applied stress are related linearly through a tensorial mobility matrix, and the method of domain perturbation is then used to derive an approximate formula for the mobility law directly in terms of surface properties. The specific accuracy of the approximation is detailed, and the mobility relation is then utilized to address several questions, such as the determination of optimal surface shapes and the effect of random surface fluctuations on fluid slip.

Abstract:The influence of solid–liquid adhesive property on liquid slippage at solid surfaces has been investigated using experiment approach on well-defined model surfaces as well as theoretical analysis. Based on a classical molecular-kinetic description for molecular and hydrodynamic slip, we propose a simple theoretical model that directly relates the liquid slip length to the liquid adhesive force on solid surfaces, which yields an exponential decay function. Well-defined smooth surfaces with varied surface wettability/adhesion are fabricated by forming self-assembled monolayers on gold with different mole ratios of hydrophobic and hydrophilic thiols. The adhesive force of a water droplet and the molecular slippage on these surfaces are probed by surface force apparatus and quartz crystal microbalance measurements, respectively. The experiment results are well consistent with our theoretical prediction. Our finding benefits the understanding of the underlying mechanism of liquid slippage on solid surfaces at molecular level and the rational design of microfluidics with an aim to be frictionless or highly controllable.

Abstract:An effective boundary potential has been proposed to solve nonperiodic boundary condition (NPBC) of hybrid method. The optimized hybrid method is applied to investigate the influences of the channel height and solid–liquid interaction parameters on slip characteristics of Couette flows in micro/nanochannels. By changing the channel height, we find that the relative slip lengths show the obvious negative correlation with the channel height and fewer density oscillations are generated near the solid wall in the larger channel height. Moreover, we continue to investigate the solid–liquid interaction parameters, including the solid–liquid energy scales ratio (C1) and solid–liquid length scales ratio (C2). The results show that the solid–liquid surface changes from hydrophobic to hydrophilic with the increase of C1, the arrangement of liquid particles adjacent to the solid particles is more disorganized over the hydrophobic solid–liquid surface compared with the hydrophilic surface, and the probability of the liquid particles that appear near the solid particles becomes smaller. Meanwhile, the relative slip lengths are minimum when the liquid and solid particles have the same diameter. Furthermore, the relative slip lengths follow a linear relationship with the shear rate when the solid–liquid interaction parameters change. The plenty computational time has been saved by the present hybrid method compared with the full molecular dynamics simulation (FMD) in this paper.

Abstract:Slip length describes the classical no-slip boundary condition violation of Newtonian fluid mechanics, where fluids glide on the solid surfaces. Here, we propose a new analytical model validated by experiments for characterization of the liquid slip using vibrating solid surfaces. Essentially, we use a microfluidic system integrated with quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) to investigate the relationship between the slip and the mechanical response of a vibrating solid for a moving fluid. We discover a liquid slip that emerges especially at high flow rates, which is independent of the surface wetting condition, having significant contributions to the changes in resonant frequency of the vibrating solid and energy dissipation on its surface. Overall, our work will lead to consideration of 'missing slip' in the vibrating solid-liquid systems such as the QCM-based biosensing where traditionally frequency changes are interpreted exclusively with mass change on the sensor surface, irrespective of the flow conditions.
Impact of Wall-Slip on Real Shear Thickening Fluid Flow Behavior in Rectangular Channels: Insights from LBM and Theoretical Modeling

Abstract:The liquid slip phenomenon are pivotal for understanding fluid behavior at small scales and has been investigated using the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). Boundary conditions for the lattice Boltzmann liquid flow simulation, however, are much beyond from ideal and how to precisely determine the boundary conditions for liquid flow with slip remains a challenge. In this study, we integrate the slip boundary condition for fluid flow for Newtonian as well as non-Newtonian fluid. Our primary emphasis is to comprehend the influence of slip effects on the flow characteristics of real shear-thickening fluid (STF), encompassing Newtonian, shear-thinning, and shear-thickening behaviors under varying applied stresses or strain rates. In order to achieve this, we have introduced the combination of modified bounce back and specular reflection (MBSR) scheme and half way bounce back and specular reflection (HBSR) scheme. In theory, the interactions between the parameters of the combination and the slip length are explicitly deduced. The specified combination parameter is decided by the slip length given and the relaxation time. These slip boundary conditions are analyzed for their distinct results. Our process has been tested for accuracy and reliability for Newtonian flow as well as non-Newtonian flow and the results are compared with the analytical solution. We also develop a theoretical model to elucidate the flow characteristics of real shear-thickening fluid (STF) in a channel with slip effects. Investigating pressure and channel height variations, we observe nuanced responses. Initially, under increasing pressure, the regime with Newtonian flow rate $Q1$ dominates, reaching a peak. As pressure rises yielding dominance to another regime with shear-thinning flow rate $Q2$, while regime with shear-thickening flow rate $Q3$ remains zero. Further pressure escalation prompts a monotonically increasing trend in $Q3$, achieving dominance. Simultaneously, $Q1$ and $Q2$ approach zero. These trends hold true with and without slip effects, with higher flow rates in the presence of slips for a given pressure drop and viscosity. Additionally, as channel height increases, $Q1$ predominates at lower heights, transitioning to dominance by $Q2$ and then $Q3$ at larger heights.

Slip Due to Kink Propagation at the Liquid-Solid Interface

Abstract:In Couette flow, the liquid atoms adjacent to a solid substrate may have a finite average tangential velocity relative to the substrate. This so-called slip has been frequently observed. However, the particular molecular-level mechanisms that give rise to liquid slip are poorly understood. It is often assumed that liquid slip occurs by surface diffusion whereby atoms independently move from one substrate equilibrium site to another. We show that under certain conditions, liquid slip is due not to singular independent molecular motion, but to localized nonlinear waves that propagate at speeds that are orders of magnitude greater than the slip velocity at the liquid-solid interface. Using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, we find the properties of these waves and the conditions under which they are to be expected as the main progenitors of slip. We also provide a theoretical guide to the properties of these nonlinear waves by using an augmented Frenkel-Kontorova model. The new understanding provided by our results may lead to enhanced capabilities of the liquid-solid interface, for heat transfer, mixing, and surface-mediated catalysis.
