Abstract:We demonstrate a novel transmitter concept for quantum key distribution based on the polarization-encoded BB84 protocol, which is sourced by the incoherent light of a forward-biased Ge-on-Si PIN junction. We investigate two architectures for quantum state preparation, including independent polarization encoding through multiple modulators and a simplified approach leveraging on an interferometric polarization modulator. We experimentally prove that the Ge-on-Si light source can accommodate for quantum key generation by accomplishing raw-key rates of 2.15 kbit/s at a quantum bit error ratio of 7.71% at a symbol rate of 1 GHz. We further investigate the impact of depolarization along fiber-based transmission channels in combination with the broadband nature of the incoherent light source. Our results prove the feasibility of a fully-integrated silicon quantum key distribution transmitter, including its light source, for possible short-reach applications in zero-trust intra-datacenter environments.

Abstract:We present a silicon optical transmitter for polarization-encoded quantum key distribution (QKD). The chip was fabricated in a standard silicon photonic foundry process and integrated a pulse generator, intensity modulator, variable optical attenuator, and polarization modulator in a 1.3 mm $\times$ 3 mm die area. The devices in the photonic circuit meet the requirements for QKD. The transmitter was used in a proof-of-concept demonstration of the BB84 QKD protocol over a 5 km long fiber link.
Polarization-encoded quantum key distribution with a room-temperature telecom single-photon emitter

Abstract:Single photon sources (SPSs) are directly applicable in quantum key distribution (QKD) because they allow the implementation of the canonical BB84 protocol. To date, QKD implementations using SPS are not widespread because of the need for cryogenic operation, or frequency conversion to a wavelength efficiently transmitted over telecommunication fibers. We report an observation of polarization-encoded QKD using a room-temperature telecom SPS based on a GaN defect. A field test over 3.5 km of deployed fiber with 4.0 dB loss yielded a secure key rate of 585.9~bps. Further testing in a 32.5 km fiber spool (attenuation of 11.2 dB), which exhibited substantially lower polarization mode dispersion, yielded a secure key rate of 50.4 bps. Both results exhibited a quantum bit error rate (QBER) of approximately 5%. These results illustrate the potential of the GaN defects for supporting polarization-encoded quantum communication.

Abstract:Silicon-based polarization-encoding quantum key distribution (QKD) has been widely studied, owing to its low cost and robustness. However, prior studies have utilized off-chip devices to demodulate the quantum states or perform polarization compensation, given the difficulty of fabricating polarized independent components on the chip. In this paper, we propose a fully chip-based decoder for polarization-encoding QKD. The chip realizes a polarization state analyzer and compensates for the BB84 protocol without requiring additional hardware. It is based on a polarization-to-path conversion method that uses a polarization splitter-rotator. The chip was fabricated using a standard silicon photonics foundry; it has a compact design and is suitable for mass production. In the experimental stability test, an average quantum bit error rate of $0.56\%$ was achieved through continuous operation for 10 h without any polarization feedback. Furthermore, using the developed feedback algorithm, the chip enabled the automatic compensation of the fiber polarization drift, which was emulated by a random fiber polarization scrambler. In the case of the QKD demonstration, we obtained a finite-key secret rate of 240 bps over a fiber spool of 100 km. This study represents an important step toward the integrated, practical, and large-scale deployment of QKD systems.

Abstract:To implement the BB84 decoy-state quantum key distribution (QKD) protocol over a lossy ground-satellite quantum uplink requires a source that has high repetition rate of short laser pulses, long term stability, and no phase correlations between pulses. We present a new type of telecom optical polarization and amplitude modulator, based on a balanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer configuration, coupled to a polarization-preserving sum-frequency generation (SFG) optical setup, generating 532 nm photons with modulated polarization and amplitude states. The weak coherent pulses produced by SFG meet the challenging requirements for long range QKD, featuring a high clock rate of 76 MHz, pico-second pulse width, phase randomization, and 98% polarization visibility for all states. Successful QKD has been demonstrated using this apparatus with full system stability up to 160 minutes and channel losses as high 57 dB [Phys. Rev. A, Vol. 84, p.062326]. We present the design and simulation of the hardware through the Mueller matrix and Stokes vector relations, together with an experimental implementation working in the telecom wavelength band. We show the utility of the complete system by performing high loss QKD simulations, and confirm that our modulator fulfills the expected performance.

Abstract:The BB84 quantum key distribution protocol set the foundation for achieving secure quantum communication. Since its inception, significant advancements have aimed to overcome experimental challenges and enhance security. In this paper, we report the implementation of a passive polarization-encoded BB84 protocol using a heralded single-photon source. By passively and randomly encoding polarization states with beam splitters and half-wave plates, the setup avoids active modulation, simplifying design and enhancing security against side-channel attacks. The heralded single-photon source ensures a low probability of multi-photon emissions, eliminating the need for decoy states and mitigating photon number splitting vulnerabilities. The quality of the single-photon source is certified by measuring the second-order correlation function at zero delay, $g^{2}(0)=0.0408\pm0.0008$, confirming a very low probability of multi-photon events. Compared to conventional BB84 or BBM92 protocols, our protocol provides optimized resource trade-offs, with fewer detectors (compared to BBM92) and no reliance on external quantum random number generators (compared to typical BB84) to drive Alice's encoding scheme. Our implementation achieved a quantum bit error rate of 7% and a secure key rate of 5 kbps. These results underscore the practical, secure, and resource-efficient framework our protocol offers for scalable quantum communication technologies.

Resource-efficient quantum key distribution with integrated silicon photonics

Abstract:Integrated photonics provides a promising platform for quantum key distribution (QKD) system in terms of miniaturization, robustness and scalability. Tremendous QKD works based on integrated photonics have been reported. Nonetheless, most current chip-based QKD implementations require additional off-chip hardware to demodulate quantum states or perform auxiliary tasks such as time synchronization and polarization basis tracking. Here, we report a demonstration of resource-efficient chip-based BB84 QKD with a silicon-based encoder and decoder. In our scheme, the time synchronization and polarization compensation are implemented relying on the preparation and measurement of the quantum states generated by on-chip devices, thus no need additional hardware. The experimental tests show that our scheme is highly stable with a low intrinsic QBER of $0.50\pm 0.02\%$ in a 6-h continuous run. Furthermore, over a commercial fiber channel up to 150 km, the system enables realizing secure key distribution at a rate of 866 bps. Our demonstration paves the way for low-cost, wafer-scale manufactured QKD system.

Abstract:Silicon photonics holds the promise of the miniaturization of quantum communication devices. Recently, silicon chip optical transmitters for quantum key distribution (QKD) have been built and demonstrated experimentally. Nonetheless, these silicon chips suffer substantial phase- and polarization-dependent loss (PDL) which, if unchecked, could compromise the security of QKD systems due to overestimation of the secret key rate. Here, first, we restore the security by regarding single photons without phase and polarization dependence as untagged and secure qubits. Next, by using a postselection technique, we implement a secure QKD protocol that provides a high key generation rate even in the presence of severe phase- and polarization-dependent loss. Our solution is simple to realize in a practical experiment, as it does not require any hardware modification.

Abstract:Quantum key distribution (QKD) provides a methodology for secure key distribution based on fundamental physical laws. Although significant experimental progress has been made, the previous QKD systems are mainly composed of discrete optical and electronic devices. Here, we present a prototype of a QKD transmitter by developing the technologies of integrated silicon photonics and electronics. The photonic chip integrates the essential encoding components for the decoy-state BB84 protocol using polarization encoding, while the electronic chips integrate the dedicated driving circuits. On the basis of these integrated chips, we build a desktop QKD system to verify their performance. Successful QKD experiments are conducted at a repetition frequency of 312.5 MHz using standard fiber and emulated channel loss and the intrinsic quantum bit error rate of the system is as low as 0.41%. The finite-key secret rate is 42.7 kbit/s for the 100-km fiber and 295.5 bit/s for the 40-dB emulated loss. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of QKD based on integrated optoelectronic devices and hopefully take a fundamental toward a system-in-a-package solution.

Abstract:Quantum key distribution (QKD) enables the transmission of information that is secure against general attacks by eavesdroppers. The use of on-demand quantum light sources in QKD protocols is expected to help improve security and maximum tolerable loss. Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are a promising building block for quantum communication applications because of the deterministic emission of single photons with high brightness and low multiphoton contribution. Here we report on the first intercity QKD experiment using a bright deterministic single photon source. A BB84 protocol based on polarisation encoding is realised using the high-rate single photons in the telecommunication C-band emitted from a semiconductor QD embedded in a circular Bragg grating structure. Utilising the 79 km long link with 25.49 dB loss (equivalent to 130 km for the direct-connected optical fibre) between the German cities of Hannover and Braunschweig, a record-high secret key bits per pulse of 4.8 * 10^{-5} with an average quantum bit error ratio of ~ 0.65 % are demonstrated. An asymptotic maximum tolerable loss of 28.11 dB is found, corresponding to a length of 144 km of standard telecommunication fibre. Deterministic semiconductor sources therefore challenge state-of-the-art QKD protocols and have the potential to excel in measurement device independent protocols and quantum repeater applications.

Abstract:Wavelength conversion and five-channel multicasting for 20 Gbit/s quadrature phase-shift keying signals have been experimentally demonstrated based on four-wave mixing in a silicon waveguide with digital coherent detection. The eye diagrams and constellation diagrams of the converted and multicasting idlers are successfully observed. Moreover, the bit-error rates (BERs) of the generated idlers are measured and the power penalties are all less than 0.7 dB at a BER of 3×10(-3).

Abstract:All-optical wavelength multicasting is presented and experimentally demonstrated for 40 Gbit/s polarization-division-multiplexed (PDM) nonreturn-to-zero quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signals using four-wave mixing (FWM) with angled-polarization pumps in a silicon waveguide. Five multicast channels are obtained on the generated idlers. The eye diagrams, constellation diagrams, and bit error rates (BERs) of the QPSK sequences on the two polarization states are measured for each wavelength channel. Abstract:The calibration of the polarization basis between the transmitter and receiver is an important task in quantum key distribution. A continuously working polarization-basis tracking scheme (PBTS) will effectively promote the efficiency of the system and reduce the potential security risk when switching between the transmission and calibration modes. Here, we proposed a single-photon level continuously working PBTS using only sifted key bits revealed during an error correction procedure, without introducing additional reference light or interrupting the transmission of quantum signals. We applied the scheme to a polarization-encoding BB84 QKD system in a 50 km fiber channel, and obtained an average quantum bit error rate (QBER) of 2.32% and a standard derivation of 0.87% during 24 h of continuous operation. The stable and relatively low QBER validates the effectiveness of the scheme.

Abstract:Signal state preparation in quantum key distribution schemes can be realized using either an active or a passive source. Passive sources might be valuable in some scenarios; for instance, in those experimental setups operating at high transmission rates, since no externally driven element is required. Typical passive transmitters involve parametric down-conversion. More recently, it has been shown that phase-randomized coherent pulses also allow passive generation of decoy states and Bennett-Brassard 1984 (BB84) polarization signals, though the combination of both setups in a single passive source is cumbersome. In this paper, we present a complete passive transmitter that prepares decoy-state BB84 signals using coherent light. Our method employs sum-frequency generation together with linear optical components and classical photodetectors. In the asymptotic limit of an infinite long experiment, the resulting secret key rate (per pulse) is comparable to the one delivered by an active decoy-state BB84 setup with an infinite number of decoy settings.

Abstract:Quantum key distribution (QKD) is nowadays a well established method for generating secret keys at a distance in an information-theoretic secure way, as the secrecy of QKD relies on the laws of quantum physics and not computational complexity. In order to industrialize QKD, low-cost, mass-manufactured and practical QKD setups are required. Hence, photonic and electronic integration of the sender's and receiver's respective components is currently in the spotlight. Here we present a high-speed (2.5 GHz) integrated QKD setup featuring a transmitter chip in silicon photonics allowing for high-speed modulation and accurate state preparation, as well as a polarization-independent low-loss receiver chip in aluminum borosilicate glass fabricated by the femtosecond laser micromachining technique. Our system achieves raw bit error rates, quantum bit error rates and secret key rates equivalent to a much more complex state-of-the-art setup based on discrete components.

Abstract:A quantum key distribution transmitter chip based on hybrid-integration of silica planar light-wave circuit (PLC) and lithium niobates (LN) modulator PLC is presented. The silica part consists of a tunable directional coupler and 400-ps delay line, and the LN part is made up of a Y-branch, with electro-optic modulators on both arms. The two parts are facet-coupled to form an asymmetric Mach–Zehnder interferometer. We successfully encode and decode four BB84 states at 156.25-MHz repetition rate. Fast phase-encoding of 0 or π is achieved, with interference fringe visibilities 78.53% and 82.68% for states |+〉 and |–〉, respectively. With the aid of an extra off-chip LN intensity modulator, two time-bin states are prepared and the extinction ratios are 18.65 dB and 15.46 dB for states |0〉 and |1〉, respectively.

Abstract:Polarization modulation plays a key role in polarization-encoding quantum key distribution (QKD). Here, we report a new, to the best of our knowledge, polarization modulation scheme based on an inherently stable Sagnac interferometer. The presented scheme is free of polarization mode dispersion and calibration as well as insensitive to environmental influences. Successful experiments at a repetition frequency of 1.25 GHz have been conducted to demonstrate the feasibility and stability of the scheme. The measured average quantum bit-error rate of the four polarization states is as low as 0.27% for 80 consecutive minutes without any adjustment. This high-speed intrinsically stable polarization modulation can be widely applied to many polarization-encoding QKD systems, such as BB84, MDI, etc.

Abstract:A novel integrated optical source capable of emitting faint pulses with different polarization states and with different intensity levels at 100 MHz has been developed. The source relies on a single laser diode followed by four semiconductor optical amplifiers and thin film polarizers, connected through a fiber network. The use of a single laser ensures high level of indistinguishability in time and spectrum of the pulses for the four different polarizations and three different levels of intensity. The applicability of the source is demonstrated in the lab through a free space quantum key distribution experiment which makes use of the decoy state BB84 protocol. We achieved a lower bound secure key rate of the order of 3.64 Mbps and a quantum bit error ratio as low as $1.14\times 10^{-2}$ while the lower bound secure key rate became 187 bps for an equivalent attenuation of 35 dB. To our knowledge, this is the fastest polarization encoded QKD system which has been reported so far. The performance, reduced size, low power consumption and the fact that the components used can be space qualified make the source particularly suitable for secure satellite communication.
