Abstract:Let $G$ be a group with a non-elementary action on a (not necessarily discrete) $\tilde{A}_2$-buildings. We prove that, given a random walk on $G$, isometries in $G$ are strongly regular hyperbolic with high probability. As a consequence, we prove a Tits alternative for $G$, as well as a local-to-global fixed point result. We also prove that isometries of (not necessarily complete) $\mathbb{R}$-buildings are semi-simple.

Abstract:We prove a dynamical variant of the Tits alternative for the group of almost automorphisms of a locally finite tree $\mathcal{T}$: a group of almost automorphisms of $\mathcal{T}$ either contains a nonabelian free group playing ping-pong on the boundary $\partial \mathcal{T}$, or the action of the group on $\partial \mathcal{T}$ preserves a probability measure. This generalises to all groups of tree almost automorphisms a result of S. Hurtado and E. Militon for Thompson's group $V$, with a hopefully simpler proof.

Abstract:We show that two-dimensional Artin groups satisfy a strengthening of the Tits alternative: their subgroups either contain a non-abelian free group or are virtually free abelian of rank at most $2$. When in addition the associated Coxeter group is hyperbolic, we answer in the affirmative a question of Wise on the subgroups generated by large powers of two elements: given any two elements $a, b$ of a two-dimensional Artin group of hyperbolic type, there exists an integer $n\geq 1$ such that $a^n$ and $b^n$ either commute or generate a non-abelian free subgroup.

Abstract:Abstract We discuss various types of Tits alternative for subgroups of graph products of groups, and prove that, under some natural conditions, a graph product of groups satisfies a given form of Tits alternative if and only if each vertex group satisfies this alternative. As a corollary, we show that every finitely generated subgroup of a graph product of virtually solvable groups is either virtually solvable or large. As another corollary, we prove that every non-abelian subgroup of a right angled Artin group has an epimorphism onto the free group of rank 2. In the course of the paper we develop the theory of parabolic subgroups, which allows to describe the structure of subgroups of graph products that contain no non-abelian free subgroups. We also obtain a number of results regarding the stability of some group properties under taking graph products.

Abstract:We introduce certain directed multigraphs with extra structure, called Weyl graphs, which model quotients of Tits buildings by type-preserving chamber-free group actions. Their advantage over complexes of groups, which are often used for the CAT(0) Davis realization of buildings, is that Weyl graphs exploit the ultimate combinatorial W-metric structure of buildings. Weyl graphs generalize Tits's chamber systems of type M by allowing rank two residues to be quotients of generalized polygons by flag-free group actions, and Weyl graphs are easily constructed by amalgamating such quotients. We develop covering theory of Weyl graphs, which can be used to construct buildings as universal covers. We describe a method for obtaining a group presentation of the fundamental group of a Weyl graph, which acts chamber-freely on the covering building. The theory developed here is part of a fully general theory which deals with not necessarily chamber-free actions and the stacky version of buildings.

Abstract:In this note we show that many subgroups of mapping class groups of infinite-type surfaces without boundary have trivial centers, including all normal subgroups. Using similar techniques, we show that every nontrivial normal subgroup of a big mapping class group contains a nonabelian free group. In contrast, we show that no big mapping class group satisfies the strong Tits alternative enjoyed by finite-type mapping class groups. We also give examples of big mapping class groups that fail to satisfy even the classical Tits alternative and give a proof that every countable group appears as a subgroup of some big mapping class group.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected, reductive group over a non-archimedean local field $F$. Let $\breve F$ be the completion of the maximal unramified extension of $F$ contained in a separable closure $F_s$. In this article, we construct a Tits group of the affine Weyl group of $G(F)$ when the derived subgroup of $G_{\breve F}$ does not contain a simple factor of unitary type. If $G$ is a quasi-split ramified odd unitary group, we show that there always exist representatives in $G(F)$ of affine simple reflections that satisfy Coxeter relations (which is weaker than asking for the existence of a Tits group). If $G = U_{2r}, r \geq 3,$ is a quasi-split ramified even unitary group, we show that there don't even exist representatives in $G(F)$ of the affine simple reflections that satisfy Coxeter relations.

Abstract:We obtain a sufficient condition for lattices in the automorphism group of a finite dimensional CAT(0) cube complex to have infinite girth. As a corollary, we get a version of Girth Alternative for groups acting geometrically: any such group is either {locally finite}-by-{virtually abelian} or it has infinite girth. We produce counterexamples to show that the alternative fails in the general class of groups acting cocompactly on finite dimensional CAT(0) cube complexes by obtaining examples of non virtually solvable groups which satisfy a law.

Abstract:We extend several techniques and theorems from geometric group theory so that they apply to geometric actions on arbitrary proper metric ARs (absolute retracts). A second way that we generalize earlier results is by eliminating freeness requirements often placed on the group actions. In doing so, we allow for groups with torsion. The main theorems are new in that they generalize results found in the literature, but a significant aim is expository. Toward that end, brief but reasonably comprehensive introductions to the theories of ANRs (absolute neighborhood retracts) and Z-sets are included, as well as a much shorter short introduction to shape theory. Here is a sampling of the theorems proved here. THEOREM. If quasi-isometric groups G and H act geometrically on proper metric ARs X and Y , resp., then X is proper homotopy equivalent to Y. THEOREM. If quasi-isometric groups G and H act geometrically on proper metric ARs X and Y , resp., and Y can be compactified to a Z-structure for H, then the same boundary can be added to X to obtain a Z-structure for G. THEOREM. If quasi-isometric groups G and H admit Z-structures (X^, Z_1) and (Y^, Z_2) resp., then Z_1 and Z_2 are shape equivalent.

Abstract:Let $\mu_1, \mu_2$ be finitely supported probability measures on $\mathrm{Diff}^1_+(S^1)$ such that their supports genererate groups acting proximally on $S^1$. Let $f^n_\omega, f^n_{\omega'}, n \in \mathbb{N}$ be two independent realizations of the random walk driven by $\mu_1, \mu_2$ respectively. We show that almost surely there is an $N \in \mathbb{N}$ such that for all $n \geq N$ the elements $f^n_\omega, f^n_{\omega'}$ generate a nonabelian free group. The proof adapts the strategy by R. Aoun for linear groups and work of A. Gorodetski, V. Kleptsyn and G. Monakov, and of K. Gelfert and G. Salcedo. The theorem is still true for infinitely supported measures on $\mathrm{Diff}_+^{1 + \tau}(S^1)$ subject to moment conditions, and a weaker but similar statement holds for measures supported on $\mathrm{Homeo}_+(S^1)$ with no moment conditions.

Abstract:Let G be a locally compact group acting properly by type-preserving automorphisms on a locally finite thick Euclidean building $\Delta$ and K be the stabilizer of a special vertex in $\Delta$. It is known that (G, K) is a Gelfand pair as soon as G acts strongly transitively on $\Delta$; this is in particular the case when G is a semi-simple algebraic group over a local field. We show a converse to this statement, namely: if (G, K) is a Gelfand pair and G acts cocompactly on $\Delta$, then the action is strongly transitive. The proof uses the existence of strongly regular hyperbolic elements in G and their peculiar dynamics on the spherical building at infinity. Other equivalent formulations are also obtained, including the fact that G is strongly transitive on $\Delta$ if and only if it is strongly transitive on the spherical building at infinity.

Abstract:Let be a locally finite tree without vertices of degree . We show that among the closed subgroups of acting with a bounded number of orbits, the Chabauty-closure of the set of topologically simple groups is the set of groups without proper open subgroup of finite index. Moreover, if all vertices of have degree , then the set of isomorphism classes of topologically simple closed subgroups of acting doubly transitively on ∂ carries a natural compact Hausdorff topology inherited from Chabauty. Some of our considerations are valid in the context of automorphism groups of locally finite connected graphs. Applications to Weyl-transitive automorphism groups of buildings are also presented.

Abstract:In this paper, we define edge zeta functions for spherical buildings associated with finite general linear groups. We derive elegant formulas for these zeta functions and reveal patterns of eigenvalues of these buildings, by introducing and applying insightful tools including digraphs X0 and X2, cyclic n-partite graphs, partite-transitive group actions, and Springer's theorem on Hecke algebras.

Abstract:This is a semi-survey paper, where we start by advertising Tits' synthetic construction from \cite{Tits}, of the hyperbolic plane $H^2(Cay)$ over the Cayley numbers $Cay$, and of its automorphism group which is the exceptional simple Lie group $G=F_{4(-20)}$. Let $G=KAN$ be the Iwasawa decomposition. Our contributions are: a) Writing down explicitly the action of $N$ on $H^2(Cay)$ in Tits'model, facing the lack of associativity of $Cay$. b) If $MAN$ denotes the minimal parabolic subgroup of $G$, characterizing $M$ geometrically.

Abstract:We prove that a semi-direct product of two finite rank free groups $F_k$ and $F_n$ such that $F_k$ acts on $F_n$ by polynomially growing automorphisms acts properly isometrically on a finite dimensional CAT(0) cube complex provided some finite-index unipotent subgroup of $F_k$ satisfies two supplementary properties. In particular any such group is a-T-menable in the sense of Gromov (equivalently satisfies the Haagerup property).

Abstract:A Riemannian manifold is called \emph{weakly Einstein} if the tensor $R_{iabc}R_{j}^{~~abc}$ is a scalar multiple of the metric tensor $g_{ij}$. We consider weakly Einstein Lie groups with a left-invariant metric which are weakly Einstein. We prove that there exist no weakly Einstein non-abelian $2$-step nilpotent Lie groups and no weakly Einstein non-abelian nilpotent Lie groups whose dimension is at most $5$. We also prove that an almost abelian Lie group is weakly Einstein if and only if at the Lie algebra level it is defined by a normal operator whose square is a multiple of the identity.
