Abstract:A Wehrl entropy construction is proposed for an arbitrary locally compact abelian group $G$. It is proved that the Wehrl entropy is not less than a non-negative integer, which is an invariant of the group $G$. The minimum of the Wehrl entropy is achieved on coherent states.

Abstract:We discuss the finiteness of the topological entropy of continuous endomorphims for some classes of locally compact groups. Firstly, we focus on the abelian case, imposing the condition of being compactly generated, and note an interesting behaviour of slender groups. Secondly, we remove the condition of being abelian and consider nilpotent periodic locally compact $p$-groups ($p$ prime), reducing the computations to the case of Sylow $p$-subgroups. Finally, we investigate locally compact Heisenberg $p$-groups $\mathbb{H}_{n}(\mathbb{Q}_{p})$ on the field $\mathbb{Q}_{p}$ of the $p$-adic rationals with $n$ arbitrary positive integer.

Abstract:Lieb and Carlen have shown that mixed states with minimal Wehrl entropy are coherent states. We prove that mixed states with almost minimal Wehrl entropy are almost coherent states. This is proved in a quantitative sense where both the norm and the exponent are optimal and the constant is explicit. We prove a similar bound for generalized Wehrl entropies. As an application, a sharp quantitative form of the log-Sobolev inequality for functions in the Fock space is provided.

Entropy of group actions beyond uniform lattices

Abstract:Entropy of measure preserving or continuous actions of amenable discrete groups allows for various equivalent approaches. Among them are the ones given by the techniques developed by Ollagnier and Pinchon on the one hand and the Ornstein-Weiss lemma on the other. We extend these two approaches to the context of actions of amenable topological groups. In contrast to the discrete setting, our results reveal a remarkable difference between the two concepts of entropy in the realm of non-discrete groups: while the first quantity collapses to 0 in the non-discrete case, the second yields a well-behaved invariant for amenable unimodular groups. Concerning the latter, we moreover study the corresponding notion of topological pressure, prove a Goodwyn-type theorem, and establish the equivalence with the uniform lattice approach (for locally compact groups admitting a uniform lattice). Our study elaborates on a version of the Ornstein-Weiss lemma due to Gromov.

Abstract:The local properties of entropy for a countable discrete amenable group action are studied. For such an action, a local variational principle for a given finite open cover is established, from which the variational relation between the topological and measure-theoretic entropy tuples is deduced. While doing this it is shown that two kinds of measure-theoretic entropy for finite Borel covers coincide. Moreover, two special classes of such an action: systems with uniformly positive entropy and completely positive entropy are investigated.

Abstract:The well-known Heyde theorem characterizes the Gaussian distributions on the real line by the symmetry of the conditional distribution of one linear form of independent random variables given another. We generalize this theorem to groups of the form $\mathbb{R}\times F$, where $F$ is a finite Abelian group such that its 2-component is isomorphic to the additive group of the integers modulo $2$. In so doing, coefficients of the linear forms are arbitrary topological automorphisms of the group. Previously, a similar result was proved in the case when the group $F$ contains no elements of order 2. The presence of an element of order 2 in $F$ leads to the fact that a new class of probability distributions is characterized

Abstract:We recognise that an entropy inequality akin to the main intermediate goal of recent works (Gowers, Green, Manners, Tao [3],[2]) regarding a conjecture of Marton provides a black box from which we can also through a short deduction recover another description: if a finite subset $A$ of an abelian group $G$ is such that the distribution of the sums $a+b$ with $(a,b) \in A \times A$ is only slightly more spread out than the uniform distribution on $A$, then $A$ has small symmetric difference with some finite coset of $G$. The resulting bounds are necessarily sharp up to a logarithmic factor.

Abstract:We prove that any finitely generated elementary amenable group of zero (algebraic) entropy contains a nilpotent subgroup of finite index or, equivalently, any finitely generated elementary amenable group of exponential growth is of uniformly exponential growth. We also show that 0 is an accumulation point of the set of entropies of elementary amenable groups.

Abstract:Let R be a ring, let G be an amenable group and let R∗G$$R{*}G$$ be a crossed product. The goal of this paper is to construct, starting with a suitable additive function L on the category of left modules over R, an additive function on a subcategory of the category of left modules over R∗G$$R{*}G$$, which coincides with the whole category if L(RR)<∞$$L({}_RR) <\infty $$. This construction can be performed using a dynamical invariant associated with the original function L, called algebraic L-entropy. We apply our results to two classical problems on group rings: the stable finiteness and the zero-divisors conjectures.

Abstract:We define the entropy of an infinite family C\mathcal {C} of measurable sets in a probability space, and show that a family has zero entropy if and only if it is totally bounded under the symmetric difference semi-metric. Our principal result is that the mean ergodic theorem holds uniformly for C\mathcal {C} under every ergodic transformation if and only if C\mathcal {C} has zero entropy. When the entropy of C\mathcal {C} is positive, we establish a strong converse showing that the uniform mean ergodic theorem fails generically in every isomorphism class, including the isomorphism classes of Bernoulli transformations. As a corollary of these results, we establish that every strong mixing transformation is uniformly strong mixing on C\mathcal {C} if and only if the entropy of C\mathcal {C} is zero, and we obtain a corresponding result for weak mixing transformations.

We will use local analysis to study the connection between the existence of asymptotic pairs, chaotic sets and stable sets. Examples are given for the case of integer lattice groups, the Heisenberg group, and the groups of integral unipotent upper triangular matrices.

Abstract:In a previous paper, we proposed a probability interpretation for highergenus amplitudes of BMN (Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase) strings in a pp-wavebackground with infinite negative curvature. This provides a natural definitionof the entropy of a BMN string as the Shannon entropy of its correspondingprobability distribution. Abstract:The relative entropy of entanglement $E_R$ is defined as the distance of a multi-partite quantum state from the set of separable states as measured by the quantum relative entropy. We show that this optimisation is always achieved, i.e. any state admits a closest separable state, even in infinite dimensions; also, $E_R$ is everywhere lower semi-continuous. We use this to derive a dual variational expression for $E_R$ in terms of an external supremum instead of infimum. These results, which seem to have gone unnoticed so far, hold not only for the relative entropy of entanglement and its multi-partite generalisations, but also for many other similar resource quantifiers, such as the relative entropy of non-Gaussianity, of non-classicality, of Wigner negativity $\unicode{8212}$ more generally, all relative entropy distances from the sets of states with non-negative $\lambda$-quasi-probability distribution. The crucial hypothesis underpinning all these applications is the weak*-closedness of the cone generated by free states, and for this reason the techniques we develop involve a bouquet of classical results from functional analysis. We complement our analysis by giving explicit and asymptotically tight continuity estimates for $E_R$ and closely related quantities in the presence of an energy constraint.

On some zero-sum invariants for abelian groups of rank three

Abstract:Let $G$ be an additive finite abelian group with exponent $\exp(G)$. For $L\subseteq \mathbb N$, let $\mathsf{s}_{L}(G)$ be the smallest integer $\ell$ such that every sequence $S$ over $G$ of length $\ell$ has a zero-sum subsequence $T$ of length $|T|\in L$. In this paper, we consider the invariants $\mathsf{s}_{[1,t]}(G)$ and $\mathsf{s}_{\{k\exp(G)\}}(G)$ (with $k\in \mathbb N$). We obtain precise values as well as upper bounds of the above invariants for some abelian groups of rank three. Some of these results improve previous results of Gao-Thangadurai and Han-Zhang.

Abstract:Let $H$ be a local net of real Hilbert subspaces of a complex Hilbert space on the family of double cones of the spacetime $\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$, covariant with respect to a positive energy, unitary representation $U$ of the Poincaré group, with the Bisognano-Wichmann property for the wedge modular group. We set an upper bound on the local entropy $S_H(\phi|\! | C)$ of a vector in a region $C$ that depends only on $U$ and the PCT anti-unitary canonically associated with $H$. A similar result holds for local, Möbius covariant nets of standard subspaces on the circle. We compute the entropy increase and illustrate this bound for the nets associated with the $U(1)$-current derivatives.

Finding lower bounds on the growth and entropy of subshifts over countable groups

Abstract:We give a lower bound on the growth of a subshift based on a simple condition on the set of forbidden patterns defining that subshift. Aubrun et Al. showed a similar result based on the Lovász Local Lemma for subshift over any countable group and Bernshteyn extended their approach to deduce, amongst other things, some lower bound on the exponential growth of the subshift. However, our result has a simpler proof, is easier to use for applications, and provides better bounds on the applications from their articles (although it is not clear that our result is stronger in general). In the particular case of subshift over $\mathbb{Z}$ a similar but weaker condition given by Miller was known to imply nonemptiness of the associated shift. Pavlov used the same approach to provide a condition that implied exponential growth. We provide a version of our result for this particular setting and it is provably strictly stronger than the result of Pavlov and the result of Miller (and, in practice, leads to considerable improvement in the applications). We also apply our two results to a few different problems including strongly aperiodic subshifts, nonrepetitive subshifts, and Kolmogorov complexity of subshifts.

Abstract:Given a countable relational language $L$, we consider probability measures on the space of $L$-structures with underlying set $\mathbb{N}$ that are invariant under the logic action. We study the growth rate of the entropy function of such a measure, defined to be the function sending $n \in \mathbb{N}$ to the entropy of the measure induced by restrictions to $L$-structures on $\{0, \ldots, n-1\}$. When $L$ has finitely many relation symbols, all of arity $k\ge 1$, and the measure has a property called non-redundance, we show that the entropy function is of the form $Cn^k+o(n^k)$, generalizing a result of Aldous and Janson. When $k\ge 2$, we show that there are invariant measures whose entropy functions grow arbitrarily fast in $o(n^k)$, extending a result of Hatami-Norine. For possibly infinite languages $L$, we give an explicit upper bound on the entropy functions of non-redundant invariant measures in terms of the number of relation symbols in $L$ of each arity; this implies that finite-valued entropy functions can grow arbitrarily fast.

Abstract:We study a family of metrics on Euclidean space that generalize the left-invariant metric of the SOL group and the metric of the logarithmic model of Hyperbolic space. Suppose G is a connected, simply-connected, Heintze group of Abelian type with diagonalizable derivation or the horospherical product of two such groups. In this scenario, G is isometric to Euclidean space with a metric of the type considered. We have derived a formula for the volume entropy of metrics in this family and used it to solve a conjecture related to a family of 3-manifolds that interpolates between the SOL group and hyperbolic space.

Abstract:In statistical physics, useful notions of entropy are defined with respect to some coarse-graining procedure over a microscopic model. Here we consider some special problems that arise when the microscopic model is taken to be relativistic quantum field theory. These problems are associated with the existence of an infinite number of degrees of freedom per unit volume. Because of these the microscopic entropy can, and typically does, diverge for sharply localized states. However, the difference in the entropy between two such states is better behaved, and for most purposes it is the useful quantity to consider. In particular, a renormalized entropy can be defined as the entropy relative to the ground state. We make these remarks quantitative and precise in a simple model situation: the states of a conformal quantum field theory excited by a moving mirror. From this work, we attempt to draw some lessons concerning the “information problem” in black hole physics.
