Abstract:The asymptotic behaviour of massless spin-0 fields close to spatial and null infinity in Minkowski spacetime is studied by means of Friedrich's cylinder at spatial infinity. The results are applied to a system of equations called the good-bad-ugly which serves as a model for the Einstein field equations in generalised harmonic gauge. The relation between the logarithmic terms (polyhomogeneity) appearing in the solution obtained using conformal methods and those obtained by means of a heuristic method based on Hörmander's asymptotic system is discussed. What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve mainly focus on two aspects: 1. **Study the asymptotic behavior of spin - 0 fields with zero mass in Minkowski spacetime**: Specifically, the author uses Friedrich's "spatial infinity cylinder" method to study the behavior of these fields when approaching spatial infinity and null infinity. This includes analyzing the logarithmic terms (i.e., polyhomogeneity) that appear in the solutions of these fields. 2. **Explore the relationship between the solutions obtained by the conformal method and the heuristic method based on the Hörmander asymptotic system**: In particular, the author compares the logarithmic terms obtained by these two methods when solving the so - called "good - bad - ugly" system and attempts to explain the origin and significance of these logarithmic terms. ### Specific problem description - **Study of asymptotic behavior**: - The paper studies the asymptotic behavior of spin - 0 fields with zero mass in Minkowski spacetime, especially when approaching spatial infinity and null infinity. - Using Friedrich's "spatial infinity cylinder" method, the author can analyze the asymptotic properties of these fields in more detail. - **Origin and significance of logarithmic terms**: - Through the conformal method, the author finds that logarithmic terms appear in the solutions, and these logarithmic terms may be ignored in other methods. - The paper explores the physical significance of these logarithmic terms and attempts to compare them with the results obtained by the Hörmander asymptotic system method. ### Research background - **Importance of asymptotic infinity**: - Asymptotic infinity is an important concept in general relativity, especially when studying gravitational waves and the overall structure of spacetime. - Since gravitational waves can only be unambiguously defined at null infinity, the study of asymptotic infinity has important astrophysical significance. - **Conformal compactification method**: - The conformal compactification method is a method of studying physical spacetime by introducing an auxiliary "non - physical" spacetime. This method can map null infinity to a finite region, thus facilitating analysis. - **"Good - bad - ugly" system**: - This system is a simplified model for studying Einstein's field equations in general relativity. Through this model, the author can better understand nonlinear effects and asymptotic behavior. ### Main contributions - **Detailed asymptotic solutions**: - The author obtains detailed asymptotic solutions by the conformal method and shows the appearance of logarithmic terms in these solutions. - These logarithmic terms are of great significance for understanding the asymptotic behavior of fields. - **Method comparison**: - The author compares the results obtained by the conformal method with the heuristic method based on the Hörmander asymptotic system, points out the differences and connections between the two methods. - This comparison helps to better understand the advantages and limitations of different methods in dealing with complex physical problems. In general, through detailed analysis of the asymptotic behavior of spin - 0 fields with zero mass in Minkowski spacetime and comparison of different methods, this paper provides new perspectives and tools for understanding asymptotic problems in general relativity.
