Abstract:A deterministic finite (semi)automaton is primitive if its transition monoid (semigroup) acting on the set of states has no non-trivial congruences. It is synchronizing if it contains a constant map (transformation). In analogy to synchronizing groups, we study the possibility of characterizing automata that are synchronizing if primitive. We prove that the implication holds for several classes of automata. In particular, we show it for automata whose every letter induce either a permutation or a semiconstant transformation (an idempotent with one point of contraction) unless all letters are of the first type. We propose and discuss two conjectures about possible more general characterizations.

Lower Bounds for Synchronizing Word Lengths in Partial Automata

Abstract:It was conjectured by Černý in 1964, that a synchronizing DFA on $n$ states always has a synchronizing word of length at most $(n-1)^2$, and he gave a sequence of DFAs for which this bound is reached. Until now a full analysis of all DFAs reaching this bound was only given for $n \leq 5$, and with bounds on the number of symbols for $n \leq 12$. Here we give the full analysis for $n \leq 7$, without bounds on the number of symbols. For PFAs (partial automata) on $\leq 7$ states we do a similar analysis as for DFAs and find the maximal shortest synchronizing word lengths, exceeding $(n-1)^2$ for $n \geq 4$. Where DFAs with long synchronization typically have very few symbols, for PFAs we observe that more symbols may increase the synchronizing word length. For PFAs on $\leq 10$ states and two symbols we investigate all occurring synchronizing word lengths. We give series of PFAs on two and three symbols, reaching the maximal possible length for some small values of $n$. For $n=6,7,8,9$, the construction on two symbols is the unique one reaching the maximal length. For both series the growth is faster than $(n-1)^2$, although still quadratic. Based on string rewriting, for arbitrary size we construct a PFA on three symbols with exponential shortest synchronizing word length, giving significantly better bounds than earlier exponential constructions. We give a transformation of this PFA to a PFA on two symbols keeping exponential shortest synchronizing word length, yielding a better bound than applying a similar known transformation. Both PFAs are transitive. Finally, we show that exponential lengths are even possible with just one single undefined transition, again with transitive constructions.

Abstract:In a recent article by Chapuy and Perarnau, it was shown that a uniformly chosen automaton on $n$ states with a $2$-letter alphabet has a synchronizing word of length $O(\sqrt{n}\log n)$ with high probability. In this note, we improve this result by showing that, for any $\varepsilon>0$, there exists a synchronizing word of length $O(\varepsilon^{-1}\sqrt{n \log n})$ with probability $1-\varepsilon$. Our proof is based on two properties of random automata. First, there are words $\omega$ of length $O(\sqrt{n \log n})$ such that the expected number of possible states for the automaton, after inputting $\omega$, is $O(\sqrt{n/\log n})$. Second, with high probability, each pair of states can be synchronized by a word of length $O(\log n)$.

We prove that there exists a synchronizing word of length at most $2n^2 - 7n + 7$ for every synchronizing $n$-state deterministic automaton that satisfies the following two properties: 1. The image of the action of each letter contains at least $n-1$ states; 2. The actions of bijective letters generate a transitive permutation group on the state set.

Short Synchronizing Words for Random Automata

Abstract:We prove that a uniformly random automaton with $n$ states on a 2-letter alphabet has a synchronizing word of length $O(n^{1/2}\log n)$ with high probability (w.h.p.). That is to say, w.h.p. there exists a word $\omega$ of such length, and a state $v_0$, such that $\omega$ sends all states to $v_0$. Prior to this work, the best upper bound was the quasilinear bound $O(n\log^3n)$ due to Nicaud (2016). The correct scaling exponent had been subject to various estimates by other authors between $0.5$ and $0.56$ based on numerical simulations, and our result confirms that the smallest one indeed gives a valid upper bound (with a log factor). Our proof introduces the concept of $w$-trees, for a word $w$, that is, automata in which the $w$-transitions induce a (loop-rooted) tree. We prove a strong structure result that says that, w.h.p., a random automaton on $n$ states is a $w$-tree for some word $w$ of length at most $(1+\epsilon)\log_2(n)$, for any $\epsilon>0$. The existence of the (random) word $w$ is proved by the probabilistic method. This structure result is key to proving that a short synchronizing word exists.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate careful synchronization of one-cluster partial automata. First we prove that in general case the shortest carefully synchronizing word for such automata is of length $2^\frac{n}{2} + 1$, where $n$ is the number of states of an automaton. Additionally we prove that checking whether a given one-cluster partial automaton is carefully synchronizing is NP-hard even in the case of binary alphabet.

Abstract:Pin proved that every circular automaton with a prime number of states containing a non-permutation is synchronizing. In this paper, we investigate the synchronization of circular semi-flower automata. We first prove that every semi-flower automaton is a one-cluster automaton. Subsequently, we prove that every semi-flower automaton containing a 1-cycle is synchronizing. Further, we prove that every circular semi-flower automaton with an odd number of states containing a 2-cycle is synchronizing.

Abstract:We consider synchronizing properties of Markov decision processes (MDP), viewed as generators of sequences of probability distributions over states. A probability distribution is p-synchronizing if the probability mass is at least p in some state, and a sequence of probability distributions is weakly p-synchronizing, or strongly p-synchronizing if respectively infinitely many, or all but finitely many distributions in the sequence are p-synchronizing. For each synchronizing mode, an MDP can be (i) sure winning if there is a strategy that produces a 1-synchronizing sequence; (ii) almost-sure winning if there is a strategy that produces a sequence that is, for all {\epsilon} > 0, a (1-{\epsilon})-synchronizing sequence; (iii) limit-sure winning if for all {\epsilon} > 0, there is a strategy that produces a (1-{\epsilon})-synchronizing sequence. For each synchronizing and winning mode, we consider the problem of deciding whether an MDP is winning, and we establish matching upper and lower complexity bounds of the problems, as well as the optimal memory requirement for winning strategies: (a) for all winning modes, we show that the problems are PSPACE-complete for weakly synchronizing, and PTIME-complete for strongly synchronizing; (b) we show that for weakly synchronizing, exponential memory is sufficient and may be necessary for sure winning, and infinite memory is necessary for almost-sure winning; for strongly synchronizing, linear-size memory is sufficient and may be necessary in all modes; (c) we show a robustness result that the almost-sure and limit-sure winning modes coincide for both weakly and strongly synchronizing.

Abstract:We graft synchronization onto Girard's Geometry of Interaction in its most concrete form, namely token machines. This is realized by introducing proof-nets for SMLL, an extension of multiplicative linear logic with a specific construct modeling synchronization points, and of a multi-token abstract machine model for it. Interestingly, the correctness criterion ensures the absence of deadlocks along reduction and in the underlying machine, this way linking logical and operational properties.

Abstract:Hybrid automata are a widely accepted modeling framework for systems with discrete and continuous variables. The traditional semantics of a network of automata is based on interleaving, and requires the construction of a monolithic hybrid automaton based on the composition of the automata. This destroys the structure of the network and results in a loss of efficiency, especially using bounded model checking techniques. An alternative compositional semantics, called “shallow synchronization”, exploits the locality of transitions and relaxes time synchronization. The semantics is obtained by composing traces of the local automata, and superimposing compatibility constraints resulting from synchronization. In this paper, we investigate the different symbolic encodings of the reachability problem of a network of hybrid automata. We propose a novel encoding based on the shallow synchronization semantics, which allows different strategies for searching local paths that can be synchronized. We implemented a bounded reachability search based on the use of an incremental Satisfiability-Modulo-Theory solver. The experimental results confirm that the new encoding often performs better than the one based on interleaving.

Abstract:In this paper, we are interested in automata over infinite words and infinite duration games, that we view as general transition systems. We study transformations of systems using a Muller condition into ones using a parity condition, extending Zielonka's construction. We introduce the alternating cycle decomposition transformation, and we prove a strong optimality result: for any given deterministic Muller automaton, the obtained parity automaton is minimal both in size and number of priorities among those automata admitting a morphism into the original Muller automaton. We give two applications. The first is an improvement in the process of determinisation of Büchi automata into parity automata by Piterman and Schewe. The second is to present characterisations on the possibility of relabelling automata with different acceptance conditions.

Abstract:We address the following open problem, implicit in the 1990 article "Automorphisms of one-sided subshifts of finite type" of Boyle, Franks and Kitchens (BFK): "Does there exists an element $\psi$ in the group of automorphisms of the one-sided shift $\operatorname{Aut}(\{0,1,\ldots,n-1\}^{\mathbb{N}}, \sigma_{n})$ so that all points of $\{0,1,\ldots,n-1\}^{\mathbb{N}}$ have orbits of length $n$ under $\psi$ and $\psi$ is not conjugate to a permutation?" Here, by a 'permutation' we mean an automorphism of one-sided shift dynamical system induced by a permutation of the symbol set $\{0,1,\ldots,n-1\}$. We resolve this question by showing that any $\psi$ with properties as above must be conjugate to a permutation. Our techniques naturally extend those of BFK using the strongly synchronizing automata technology developed here and in several articles of the authors and collaborators (although, this article has been written to be largely self-contained).

Abstract:Finitely many two-way automata work independently and synchronously on a unary input. Some of their states are broadcasting, i.e., dispatched to all other automata. At each step of the computation, each automaton changes state and moves right, left or stay in place according to the current state and the possible messages dispatched. The input is recognized if the following occurs: starting from the initial configuration (the heads of all automata are positioned to the left end of the tape) one automaton reaches a final state when its head is positioned to the right end of the tape. We show that if the number of messages sent during the computation is bounded by some integer which is independent of the length of the input, then the language recognized is regular,

Abstract:We consider the model-checking problem of Synchronized Computation-Tree Logic (CTL+Sync) over One-Counter Automata (OCAs). CTL+Sync augments CTL with temporal operators that require several paths to satisfy properties in a synchronous manner, e.g., the property "all paths should eventually see $p$ at the same time". The model-checking problem for CTL+Sync over finite-state Kripke structures was shown to be in $\mathsf{P}^{\mathsf{NP}^{\mathsf{NP}}}$. OCAs are labelled transition systems equipped with a non-negative counter that can be zero-tested. Thus, they induce infinite-state systems whose computation trees are not regular. The model-checking problem for CTL over OCAs was shown to be $\mathsf{PSPACE}$-complete. We show that the model-checking problem for CTL+Sync over OCAs is decidable. However, the upper bound we give is non-elementary. We therefore proceed to study the problem for a central fragment of CTL+Sync, extending CTL with operators that require all paths to satisfy properties in a synchronous manner, and show that it is in $\mathsf{EXP}^\mathsf{NEXP}$ (and in particular in $\mathsf{EXPSPACE}$), by exhibiting a certain "segmented periodicity" in the computation trees of OCAs.

Abstract:We study S1S and Büchi automata in the constructive type theory of the Coq proof assistant. For UP semantics (ultimately periodic sequences), we verify Büchi's translation of formulas to automata and thereby establish decidability of S1S constructively. For AS semantics (all sequences), we verify Büchi's translation assuming that sequences over finite semigroups have Ramseyan factorisations (RF). Assuming RF, UP semantics and AS semantics agree. RF is a consequence of Ramsey's theorem and implies the infinite pigeonhole principle, which is known to be unprovable constructively. We show that each of the following properties holds for UP semantics but is equivalent to RF for AS semantics: excluded middle of formula satisfaction, excluded middle of automaton acceptance, and existence of complement automata.
