Abstract:Superoscillations are a phenomenon where a band-limited wave may locally oscillate faster than its highest Fourier component. They are a product of destructive interference between the wave's constituent harmonics. In this article, we demonstrate that superoscillations enable a new functionality in linear optical sensing -- the 100-fold enhancement in the optical contrast of the terahertz wave passing through two similar samples. To achieve this enhancement, we optimize the optical contrast in the time domain in a short observation window by varying the relative phases between the fundamental harmonics that make up the input terahertz wave. We find that the contrast is maximized when the wave intensity is minimized locally within the observation window, which naturally leads to the emergence of the superoscillations. We observe the 100-fold contrast enhancement both in our numerical simulations with Gaussian time-domain harmonics and in our experimental realization with narrow-band quasi-sinusoidal terahertz harmonics. Our results will have profound influence on terahertz sensing and imaging applications in medicine, pharmaceuticals, stand-off hazard detection, and nondestructive evaluation.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to significantly improve the optical contrast between two similar samples in terahertz (THz) time - domain spectroscopy by optimizing the input optical waveform. Specifically, the authors explored how to adjust the phase of the input terahertz wave to generate super - oscillation phenomena within a specific time window, thereby achieving a hundred - fold enhancement of the contrast. This enhancement has been verified not only in numerical simulations but also in experiments. This method is of great significance for improving the application of terahertz imaging technology in fields such as medicine, pharmacy, remote hazardous substance detection, and non - destructive evaluation. ### Core problems of the paper: - **Problem definition**: How to design a band - limited optical pulse to maximize its ability to distinguish between two samples with similar linear optical responses? - **Solution**: By adjusting the relative phases between the fundamental harmonics of the input terahertz wave, the transmitted waveform generates super - oscillation phenomena within a specific time window, thereby achieving a significant improvement in contrast. ### Background and motivation: - **Super - oscillation phenomenon**: Super - oscillation refers to the phenomenon in which the oscillation speed of a band - limited signal in a local area exceeds that of its highest Fourier component. This phenomenon is caused by the interference between the various harmonics of the signal. - **Application prospects**: The application of super - oscillation phenomena in optical sensing can significantly improve contrast, thereby playing an important role in terahertz imaging technology, especially in fields such as medical diagnosis and material detection. ### Experiments and results: - **Numerical simulation**: Through numerical simulation, the authors showed how to maximize the contrast between two similar samples by adjusting the relative phases of the fundamental harmonics. The results showed that within a specific time window, the intensity of the transmitted waveform was suppressed to nearly zero while super - oscillation phenomena occurred. - **Experimental verification**: In the experiment, the authors used polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) particles containing different molecular crystal powders as samples and successfully achieved a hundred - fold enhancement of the contrast by adjusting the phase of the input terahertz wave. ### Conclusions and impacts: - **Conclusion**: By generating super - oscillation phenomena within a specific time window, the optical contrast between two similar samples can be significantly improved. - **Impact**: This finding is of great significance for the development of terahertz imaging technology, especially in the field of medical imaging, which can significantly improve the ability of tumor detection and visualization and contribute to early diagnosis. ### Formula analysis: - **Contrast definition**: \[ J=\frac{\int_{-T_{\text{obs}}}^{T_{\text{obs}}}(E_1(t)-E_2(t))^2dt}{\frac{1}{2}\int_{-T_{\text{obs}}}^{T_{\text{obs}}}(E_1(t)^2 + E_2(t)^2)dt} \] where \(E_1(t)\) and \(E_2(t)\) represent the output waveforms after passing through the two samples respectively, and \(T_{\text{obs}}\) is the length of the observation window. - **Dielectric constant model**: \[ \epsilon_{1,2}(\omega)=\epsilon_\infty+\frac{\omega_p^2}{(\omega_{1,2})^2-\omega^2 - i\gamma\omega} \] where \(\omega_1 = 1.2 \, \text{THz}\) and \(\omega_2 = 1.4 \, \text{THz}\) are the resonance frequencies, and other parameters are \(\gamma = 0.1 \, \text{THz}\), \(\omega_p = 0.05 \, \text{THz}\), \(\epsilon_\infty = 2.3\). Through these methods and results, the authors demonstrated the great potential of super - oscillation phenomena in improving terahertz imaging contrast.
