Abstract:The topological (resp. geodesic) complexity of a topological (resp. metric) space is roughly the smallest number of continuous rules required to choose paths (resp. shortest paths) between any points of the space. We prove that the geodesic complexity of a cube exceeds its topological complexity by exactly 2. The proof involves a careful analysis of cut loci of the cube.

Abstract:Geodesic loops on polyhedra were studied only for Euclidean space and it was known that there are no simple geodesic loops on regular tetrahedra. Here we prove that: 1) On the spherical space, there are no simple geodesic loops on tetrahedra with internal angles $\pi/3 < \alpha_i<\pi/2$ or regular tetrahedra with $\alpha_i=\pi/2$, and there are three simple geodesic loops for each vertex of a tetrahedra with $\alpha_i > \pi/2$ and the lengths of the edges $alpha_i>\pi/2$. 2) On the hyperbolic space, for every regular tetrahedron $T$ and every pair of coprime numbers $(p,q)$, there is one simple geodesic loop of $(p,q)$ type through every vertex of $T$.

Abstract:The geodesic complexity of a metric space X is the smallest k for which there is a partition of X x X into ENRs E_0,...,E_k on each of which there is a continuous choice of minimal geodesic sigma(x_0,x_1) from x_0 to x_1. We prove that the geodesic complexity of an n-dimensional Klein bottle equals 2n. Its topological complexity remains unknown for n>2.

Closed simple geodesics on a polyhedron

Abstract:It is well-known that every isosceles tetrahedron (disphenoid) admits infinitely many simple closed geodesics on its surface. They can be naturally enumerated by pairs of co-prime integers $n > m > 1$ with two additional cases $(1,0)$ and $(1,1)$. The (n,m)-geodesic is a broken line with $4(n+m)$ vertices, its length tends to infinity as $m\to \infty$. Are there other polyhedra possessing this property? The answer depends on convexity. We give an elementary proof that among convex polyhedra only disphenoids admit arbitrarily long closed simple geodesics. For non-convex polyhedra, this is not true. We present a counterexample with the corresponding polyhedron being a union of seven equal cubes. Several open problems are formulated

Abstract:Aristotle contended that (regular) tetrahedra tile space, an opinion that remained widespread until it was observed that non-overlapping tetrahedra cannot subtend a solid angle of 4π around a point if this point lies on a tetrahedron edge. From this 15th century argument, we can deduce that tetrahedra do not tile space but, more than 500 years later, we are unaware of any known non-trivial upper bound to the packing density of tetrahedra. In this article, we calculate such a bound. To this end, we show the existence, in any packing of regular tetrahedra, of a set of disjoint spheres centered on tetrahedron edges, so that each sphere is not fully covered by the packing. The bound on the amount of space that is not covered in each sphere is obtained in a recursive way by building on the solid angle argument. The argument can be readily modified to apply to other polyhedra. The resulting lower bound on the fraction of empty space in a packing of regular tetrahedra is 2.6…×10−25 and reaches 1.4…×10−12 for regular octahedra.

Abstract:Computing geodesic distances on 2-manifold meshes is a fundamental problem in computational geometry. To date, two notable classes of exact algorithms, namely, the Mitchell–Mount–Papadimitriou (MMP) algorithm and the Chen–Han (CH) algorithm, have been widely studied. For an arbitrary triangle mesh with n vertices, these algorithms have space complexity of O(n2). In this paper, we prove that both algorithms have Θ(n1.5) space complexity on a completely regular triangulation (i.e., all triangles are equilateral).

Abstract:It is shown that every non-compact hyperbolic manifold of finite volume has a finite cover admitting a geodesic ideal triangulation. Also, every hyperbolic manifold of finite volume with non-empty, totally geodesic boundary has a finite regular cover which has a geodesic partially truncated triangulation. The proofs use an extension of a result due to Long and Niblo concerning the separability of peripheral subgroups.

Filling a triangulation of the 2-sphere

Abstract:Define the tet-volume of a triangulation of the 2-sphere to be the minimum number of tetrahedra in a 3-complex of which it is the boundary, and let $d(v)$ be the maximum tet-volume for $v$-vertex triangulations. In 1986 Sleator, Tarjan, and Thurston (STT) proved that $d(v) = 2v-10$ holds for large $v$, and conjectured that it holds for all $v \geq 13$. Their proof used hyperbolic polyhedra of large volume. They suggested using more general notions of volume instead. In work that was all but lost, Mathieu and Thurston used this approach to outline a combinatorial proof of the STT asymptotic result. Here we use a much simplified version of their approach to prove the full conjecture. This implies STT's weaker conjecture, proven by Pournin in 2014, characterizing the maximum rotation distance between trees.

Abstract:It is shown that every non-compact hyperbolic manifold of finite volume has a finite cover admitting a geodesic ideal triangulation. Also, every hy-perbolic manifold of finite volume with non-empty, totally geodesic boundary has a finite regular cover which has a geodesic partially truncated triangulation. The proofs use an extension of a result due to Long and Niblo concerning the separa-bility of peripheral subgroups. Epstein and Penner [2] used a convex hull construction in Lorentzian space to show that every non-compact hyperbolic manifold of finite volume has a canonical subdivision into convex geodesic polyhedra all of whose vertices lie on the sphere at infinity of hyperbolic space. In general, one cannot expect to further subdivide these polyhedra into ideal geodesic simplices such that the result is an ideal triangulation. That this is possible after lifting the cell decomposition to an appropriate finite cover is the first main result of this paper. A cell decomposition of a hyperbolic n–manifold into ideal geodesic n–simplices all of which are embedded will be referred to as an embedded geodesic ideal triangulation. Theorem 1 Any non-compact hyperbolic manifold of finite volume has a finite regular cover which admits an embedded geodesic ideal triangulation. The study of geodesic ideal triangulations of hyperbolic 3–manifolds goes back to Thurston [11]. They are known to have nice properties through, for instance, work by Neumann and Zagier [8] and Choi [1]. Petronio and Porti [9] discuss the question of whether every non-compact hyperbolic 3–manifold of finite volume has a geodesic ideal triangulation — this question still remains unanswered. Kojima [5] extended the construction by Epstein and Penner to obtain a canonical decomposition into partially truncated polyhedra of any hyperbolic manifold with totally geodesic boundary components. A cell decomposition of a hyperbolic n–manifold with totally geodesic boundary into geodesic partially truncated n–simplices all of which are embedded will be referred to as an embedded geodesic partially truncated triangulation. Complete totally geodesic subsets of the complex hyperbolic plane: an elementary classification

Abstract:The non-trivial complete totally geodesic submanifolds of the complex hyperbolic plane $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ are the complex geodesics and the real planes. We present two new proofs for this fact. One is a short proof based on an algebraic formula for the Riemann curvature tensor due to S. Anan'in and C. Grossi and resembles the traditional proof using Lie theory. The other is purely elementary and geometric, relying on the structures in $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ instead of general theories. In this second approach, we prove a slightly stronger result: the only non-trivial complete totally geodesic subsets of $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ are the complex geodesics and the real planes without assuming that the subsets are submanifolds a priori. This second proof is also intriguing for only making use of elementary geometric constructions.

Abstract:It is well known that an arbitrary closed orientable $3$-manifold can be realized as the unique boundary of a compact orientable $4$-manifold, that is, any closed orientable $3$-manifold is cobordant to zero. In this paper, we consider the geometric cobordism problem: a hyperbolic $3$-manifold is geometrically bounding if it is the only boundary of some totally geodesic hyperbolic 4-manifold. However, there are very rare geometrically bounding closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Let $v approx 4.3062ldots$ be the volume of the regular right-angled hyperbolic dodecahedron $mathbb{H}^{3}$, for each $n in mathbb{Z}_{+}$, we show there are at least $lceilfrac{5n+3}{2}rceil$ closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds of the same volume $16nv$, each of them bounds a totally geodesic hyperbolic 4-manifold. The proof uses small cover theory over a sequence of linearly-glued dodecahedra.
Maximal Distortion of Geodesic Diameters in Polygonal Domains

Abstract:For a polygon $P$ with holes in the plane, we denote by $\varrho(P)$ the ratio between the geodesic and the Euclidean diameters of $P$. It is shown that over all convex polygons with $h$~convex holes, the supremum of $\varrho(P)$ is between $\Omega(h^{1/3})$ and $O(h^{1/2})$. The upper bound improves to $O(1+\min\{h^{3/4}\Delta,h^{1/2}\Delta^{1/2}\})$ if every hole has diameter at most $\Delta\cdot {\rm diam}_2(P)$; and to $O(1)$ if every hole is a \emph{fat} convex polygon. Furthermore, we show that the function $g(h)=\sup_P \varrho(P)$ over convex polygons with $h$ convex holes has the same growth rate as an analogous quantity over geometric triangulations with $h$ vertices when $h\rightarrow \infty$.

Abstract:he regular tetrahedron is the simplest Platonic solid.Nevertheless, in studying its packing properties, several renowned scholars have made mistakes, and many questions about it remain unsolved.Currently no one knows the density of its densest packings, the density of its densest translative packings, or the exact value of its congruent kissing number.In this paper we recount historical developments on packing regular tetrahedra, report new results on its translative packing density and congruent kissing number, and formulate several unsolved problems. Aristotle's ErrorIn the history of mathematics, one of the earliest recorded mistakes was made by Aristotle.More than 2,300 years ago, Aristotle (384-322 BCE) taught that the regular tetrahedra fill space.In De Caelo (On the Heavens) Book III.8 he says (in translation): "Among surfaces it is agreed that there are three figures which fill the place that contain them-the triangle, the square and the hexagon: among solids only two, the pyramid and the cube" [3, 306b, p. 319].Here "pyramid" refers to the regular tetrahedron, a Platonic solid.Thus Aristotle's assertion can be taken to mean: space can be tiled by congruent regular tetrahedra.
Manhattan geodesics and the boundary of the space of metric structures on hyperbolic groups

Abstract:For any non-elementary hyperbolic group $\Gamma$, we find an outer automorphism invariant geodesic bicombing for the space of metric structures on $\Gamma$ equipped with a symmetrized version of the Thurston metric on Techimüller space. We construct and study a boundary for this space and show that it contains many well-known pseudo metrics including those coming from actions on $\text{CAT}(0)$ cube complexes, real trees and coned-off Cayley graphs. As corollaries we deduce length spectrum rigidity results, regularity results for Manhattan curves, optimal growth rate results for Anosov representations and results regarding continuous extensions of translation distance functions to the space of geodesic currents. Using our results for geodesic currents we settle a conjecture of Bonahon in the negative.

Abstract:We show that if a closed oriented $n$-manifold $M$ has a non-trivial cohomology class of even degree $k$, whose all pullbacks to products of type $S^1\times N$ vanish, then the topological complexity $\mathrm{TC}(M)$ is at least $6$, if $n$ is odd, and at least $7$ or $9$, if $n$ is even. These bounds extend and improve a result of Mescher and apply for instance to negatively curved manifolds and to connected sums with at least one such summand. In fact, better bounds are obtained due to the non-vanishing of the Gromov norm. As a consequence, in dimension four, we completely determine the topological complexity of these connected sums, namely we show that it is equal to its maximum value nine. Furthermore, we discuss realisation of degree two homology classes by tori, and show how to construct non-realisable classes out of realisable classes in connected sums. The examples of this paper will quite often be aspherical manifolds whose fundamental groups have trivial center and connected sums. We thus discuss the possible relation between the maximum topological complexity $2n+1$ and the triviality of the center for aspherical $n$-manifolds and their connected sums.

Abstract:The minimal length of closed geodesics among all finite-type hyperbolic surfaces with self-intersection number $k$ is $2\cosh^{-1}(2k+1)$ for $k$ sufficiently large, i.e. $k>10^{13350}$ by <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2210.12966" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2210.12966">arXiv:2210.12966</a>. In the present paper we will give an another proof independent of it and improve the lower bound $k>10^{13350}$ to $k>1750$.
