Abstract:We consider the problem of conformally deforming a metric by a fully nonlinear flow on a compact manifold with totally geodesic boundary. We prove that the k-curvature defined by the modified Schouten tensor always can be deformed in a natural way to a constant at exponential rate and the boundary preserves totally geodesic.

Abstract:We consider a gradient flow generated by a complex Hessian functional which is defined on compact Kahler manifolds. By setting up the a priori estimates of the admissible solutions, we prove the long-time existence of the solution to the flow and its convergence. Thus we show the functional admits a local minimal point in the space of admissible functions. As its application, we show the solvability of a class of complex Hessian equations.

Abstract:In this paper we study a contracting flow of closed, convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space ℝ^n+1 with speed f r^α K, where K is the Gauss curvature, r is the distance from the hypersurface to the origin, and f is a positive and smooth function. If α≥ n+1, we prove that the flow exists for all time and converges smoothly after normalisation to a soliton, which is a sphere centred at the origin if f ≡ 1. Our argument provides a parabolic proof in the smooth category for the classical Aleksandrov problem, and resolves the dual q-Minkowski problem introduced by Huang, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang (Acta Math. 216 (2016): 325-388), for the case q<0. If α < n+1, corresponding to the case q>0, we also establish the same results for even function f and origin-symmetric initial condition, but for non-symmetric f, counterexample is given for the above smooth convergence.
Weak limits of the $J$-flow and the deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills flow on Kähler surfaces: boundary cases

Abstract:We prove that if a pair of Kähler classes is $J$-nef, the $J$-flow on a compact Kähler surface converges to a weak solution of the Monge-Ampère equation in the sense of currents. We also establish the same convergence behavior for the deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills flow. The method is based on a property of a limit of viscosity subsolutions.

Abstract:Let (Σ,g) be a closed Riemann surface, and G={σ1,⋯,σN} be a finite isometric group acting on it. Denote a positive integer ℓ=minx∈Σ⁡I(x), where I(x) is the number of all distinct points of the set {σ1(x),⋯,σN(x)}. In this paper, we consider the following G-invariant mean field type flow{∂∂teu=Δgu+8πℓ(feu∫Σfeudvg−1|Σ|)u(⋅,0)=u0, where u0 belongs to C2+α(Σ) for some α∈(0,1), f is a sign-changing smooth function such that ∫Σfeu0dvg≠0, both u0 and f are G-invariant, and |Σ| denotes the area of (Σ,g). Such kind of flow was originally proposed by Castéras [6]. Through a priori estimates, we prove that the flow u(x,t) exists for all time t∈[0,∞). Moreover, by employing blow-up procedure, we obtain that under certain geometric conditions, u(x,t) converges to u(x) in H2(Σ) as t→∞, where u(x) is a solution of the mean field equation−Δgu=8πℓ(feu∫Σfeudvg−1|Σ|). This generalizes recent results of Li-Zhu [27] and Sun-Zhu [37].

Abstract:Let (M, g) be a closed Riemann surface. Castéras (Pac J Math 276:321–345, 2015) introduced a mean field type flow and obtained its global existence. For $$\rho \ne 8N\pi $$ , assuming in addition that $$J_\rho (v(t))\ge -C$$ for $$\rho >8\pi $$ , they showed the convergence of the flow. In this paper, we will prove the convergence of the flow for the critical case $$\rho =8\pi $$ with some appropriate initial data $$v_0$$ and some geometric hypothesis. In particular, this gives a new proof of Ding–Jost–Li–Wang’s result in (Asian J Math 1:230–248, 1997).

Abstract:We consider a curve with boundary points free to move on a line in $\mathbb R^2$, which evolves by the $L^2$--gradient flow of the elastic energy, that is a linear combination of the Willmore and the length functional. For such planar evolution problem we study the short and long--time existence. Once we establish under which boundary conditions the PDE's system is well--posed (in our case the Navier boundary conditions), employing the Solonnikov theory for linear parabolic systems in Hölder space, we show that there exists a unique flow in a maximal time interval $[0,T)$. Then, using energy methods we prove that the maximal time is actually $T= + \infty$.

Abstract:Let X be a C 1 vector field on a compact boundaryless Riemannian manifold M (dim M ≥ 2), and Λ a compact invariant set of X. Suppose that Λ has a hyperbolic splitting, i.e., T Λ M = E s ⊕〈X〉⊕E u with E s uniformly contracting and E u uniformly expanding. We prove that if, in addition, Λ is chain transitive, then the hyperbolic splitting is continuous, i.e., Λ is a hyperbolic set. In general, when Λ is not necessarily chain transitive, the chain recurrent part is a hyperbolic set. Furthermore, we show that if the whole manifold M admits a hyperbolic splitting, then X has no singularity, and the flow is Anosov.
On the convergence of the Willmore flow with Dirichlet boundary conditions

Abstract:Very little is yet known regarding the Willmore flow of surfaces with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We consider surfaces with a rotational symmetry as initial data and prove a global existence and convergence result for solutions of the Willmore flow with initial data below an explicit, sharp energy threshold. Strikingly, this threshold depends on the prescribed boundary conditions - it can even be made to be $0$. We show sharpness for some critical boundary data by constructing surfaces above this energy threshold so that the corresponding Willmore flow develops a singularity. Finally, a Li-Yau inequality for open curves in $\mathbb{H}^2$ is proved.

Abstract:We consider a hyperbolic ergodic measure of a C1 flow on a compact manifold. Under the hypothesis that there are no fixed points and that the Oseledec splitting of the normal bundle satisfies a limit domination property, we prove that the measure has a shadowing property. As an application of this result we prove that the measure can be approached on the weak⁎ topology by measures supported on hyperbolic periodic orbits.

Abstract:In this article we introduce conformal Bach flow and establish its well-posedness on closed manifolds. We also obtain its backward uniqueness. To give an attempt to study the long-time behavior of conformal Bach flow, assuming that the curvature and the pressure function are bounded, global and local Shi's type $L^2$-estimate of derivatives of curvatures are derived. Furthermore using the $L^2$-estimate and based on an idea from \cite{St13} we show Shi's pointwise-estimate of derivatives of curvatures without assuming Sobolev constant bound.

Abstract:We consider fixed boundary flow with canonical interpretability as principal components extended on non-linear Riemannian manifolds. We aim to find a flow with fixed starting and ending points for noisy multivariate data sets lying on an embedded non-linear Riemannian manifold. In geometric term, the fixed boundary flow is defined as an optimal curve that moves in the data cloud with two fixed end points. At any point on the flow, we maximize the inner product of the vector field, which is calculated locally, and the tangent vector of the flow. The rigorous definition derives from an optimization problem using the intrinsic metric on the manifolds. For random data sets, we name the fixed boundary flow the random fixed boundary flow and analyze its limiting behavior under noisy observed samples. We construct a high level algorithm to compute the random fixed boundary flow and the convergence of the algorithm is provided. We show that the fixed boundary flow yields a concatenate of three segments, of which one coincides with the usual principal flow when the manifold is reduced to the Euclidean space. We further prove that the random fixed boundary flow converges largely to the population fixed boundary flow with high probability. We illustrate how the random fixed boundary flow can be used and interpreted, and showcase its application in real data sets.

Abstract:Inspired by work of Besson-Courtois-Gallot, we construct a flow called the natural flow on a nonpositively curved Riemannian manifold $M$. As with the natural map, the $k$-Jacobian of the natural flow is directly related to the critical exponent $\delta$ of the fundamental group. There are several applications of the natural flow that connect dynamical, geometrical, and topological invariants of the manifold. First, we give $k$-dimensional linear isoperimetric inequalities when $k > \delta$. This, in turn, produces lower bounds on the Cheeger constant. We resolve a recent conjecture of Dey-Kapovich on the non-existence of $k$-dimensional compact, complex subvarieties of complex hyperbolic manifolds with $2k > \delta$. We also provide upper bounds on the homological dimension, generalizing work of Kapovich and work of Farb with the first two authors. Using different methods, we also give upper bounds on the cohomological dimension which partially resolves a conjecture of Kapovich. We also specialize to the setting of locally symmetric manifolds where we further refine our work. Finally, we introduce a new growth condition on the Bowen-Margulis measure that we call uniformly exponentially bounded that we connect to the cohomological dimension and which could be of independent interest.

Abstract:The author studies a family of nonlinear integral flows that involve Riesz potentials on Riemannian manifolds. In the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev (HLS for short) subcritical regime, he presents a precise blow-up profile exhibited by the flows. In the HLS critical regime, by introducing a dual Q curvature he demonstrates the concentration-compactness phenomenon. If, in addition, the integral kernel matches with the Green's function of a conformally invariant elliptic operator, this critical flow can be considered as a dual Yamabe flow. Convergence is then established on the unit spheres, which is also valid on certain locally conformally flat manifolds.
