Abstract:A 1976 result from Norton may be used to give an asymptotic (but not explicit) description of the constant in Mertens' second theorem for primes in arithmetic progressions. Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, we give an effective description of Norton's observation.

Abstract:For $k\ge1$, let $R_k(x)$ denote the reciprocal sum up to $x$ of numbers with $k$ prime factors, counted with multiplicity. In prior work, the authors obtained estimates for $R_k(x)$, extending Mertens' second theorem, as well as a finer-scale estimate for $R_2(x)$ up to $(\log x)^{-N}$ error for any $N > 0$. In this article, we establish the limiting behavior of the higher Mertens constants from the $R_2(x)$ estimate. We also extend these results to $R_3(x)$, and we remark on the general case $k\ge4$.

Abstract:For $i\in \{1,2,3\}$, let $E_i(x)$ denote the error term in each of the three theorems of Mertens on the asymptotic distribution of prime numbers. We show that for each $i\in \{1,2\}$, the Riemann hypothesis is equivalent to the condition $\int_2^X E_i(x)\,\mathrm{d}x>0$ for all $X>2$, and we examine assumptions under which the equivalence also holds for $i=3$. In addition, we generalize this to analogues of Mertens' theorems concerning prime sums twisted by quadratic Dirichlet characters or restricted to arithmetic progressions.

Abstract:The Mertens' first theorem gives us the following asymptotic formula \begin{equation*} \sum_{\substack{p\leq x\\ p~prime}}\frac{lnp}{p}=lnx+O(1), \end{equation*} and the Mertens' second theorem indicates that there exists a constant $B\approx 0.261$, named the Mertens constant, such that \begin{equation*} \sum_{\substack{p\leq x\\ p~prime}}\frac{1}{p}=ln(lnx)+B+O\left(\frac{1}{lnx}\right). \end{equation*} In this paper, by using the Abel summation formula and Dirichlet's hyperbola method, we extend them to multiple cases.

Abstract:In 1874, Mertens famously proved an asymptotic formula for the product $p/(p-1)$ over all primes $p$ up to $x$. On the other hand, one may expand Mertens' prime product into series over numbers $n$ with only small prime factors. It is natural to restrict such series to numbers $n$ with a fixed number $k$ of prime factors. In this article, we obtain formulae for these series for each $k$, which together dissect Mertens' original estimate. The proof is by elementary methods of a combinatorial flavor.

Abstract:Gerard and Washington proved that, for $k > -1$, the number of primes less than $x^{k+1}$ can be well approximated by summing the $k$-th powers of all primes up to $x$. We extend this result to primes in arithmetic progressions: we prove that the number of primes $p\equiv n \pmod m$ less than $x^{k+1}$ is asymptotic to the sum of $k$-th powers of all primes $p\equiv n \pmod m$ up to $x$. We prove that the prime power sum approximation tends to be an underestimate for positive $k$ and an overestimate for negative $k$, and quantify for different values of $k$ how well the approximation works for $x$ between $10^4$ and $10^8.$

Abstract:A celebrated theorem of Delange gives a sufficient condition for an arithmetic function to be the sum of the associated Ramanujan expansion with the coefficients provided by a previous result of Wintner. By applying the Delange theorem to the correlation of the von Mangoldt function with its incomplete form, we deduce an inequality involving the counting function of the prime numbers in arithmetic progressions. A remarkable aspect is that such an inequality is equivalent to the famous conjectural formula by Hardy and Littlewood for the twin primes.

Abstract:We prove quantitative estimates for averages of the von Mangoldt and Möbius functions along polynomial progressions $n+P_1(m),\ldots, n+P_k(m)$ for a large class of polynomials $P_i$. The error terms obtained save an arbitrary power of logarithm, matching the classical Siegel--Walfisz error term. These results give the first quantitative bounds for the Tao--Ziegler polynomial patterns in the primes result. The proofs are based on a quantitative generalised von Neumann theorem of Peluse, a recent result of Leng on strong bounds for the Gowers uniformity of the primes, and analysis of a ``Siegel model'' for the von Mangoldt function along polynomial progressions.

Abstract:Let $P^-(n)$ denote the smallest prime factor of a natural integer $n>1$. Furthermore let $\mu$ and $\omega$ denote respectively the Möbius function and the number of distinct prime factors function. We show that, given any set ${\scr P}$ of prime numbers with a natural density, we have $\sum_{P^-(n)\in \scr P}\mu(n)\omega(n)/n=0$ and provide a effective estimate for the rate of convergence. This extends a recent result of Alladi and Johnson, who considered the case when ${\scr P}$ is an arithmetic progression.

Abstract:We partition a series of natural numbers into infinite number sequences. We consider two partitioning options: (a) a forest of unary trees with recurrence formula of Mersenne numbers, and (b) a set of arithmetic progressions with difference $2^k$. Every tree starts with an even number, and any even number starts a certain tree. In the partitioning into arithmetic progressions, each progression starts with a Mersenne number, and each Mersenne number is the beginning of a particular arithmetic progression. Unary trees starting from some term are contained in OEIS A036991 (compact Dyck path codes), so we consider A036991 as a backbone of the partitions. In particular, we prove the existence of an arithmetic progression of any length in A036991. As a result of the partitions, we obtain a Natural Matrix with a packing function that captures the bijection between the set of natural numbers and the set of ordered pairs of natural numbers. In Natural Matrix, the even natural numbers are located on the $x$-axis, so the selection of primes in the considered arithmetic progressions is greatly simplified. A method for proving the infinity of primes in A036991 is proposed. In this regard, an attempt is made to reduce the Linnik's constant to $2$.

New explicit bounds for Mertens function and the reciprocal of the Riemann zeta-function

Abstract:In this paper, we establish new explicit bounds for the Mertens function $M(x)$. In particular, we compare $M(x)$ against a short-sum over the non-trivial zeros of the Riemann zeta-function $\zeta(s)$, whose difference we can bound using recent computations and explicit bounds for the reciprocal of $\zeta(s)$. Using this relationship, we are able to prove explicit versions of $M(x) \ll x\exp\left(-\eta_1 \sqrt{\log{x}}\right)$ and $M(x) \ll x\exp\left(-\eta_2 (\log{x})^{3/5} (\log\log{x})^{-1/5}\right)$ for some $\eta_i > 0$. Our bounds with the latter form are the first explicit results of their kind. In the process of proving these, we establish another novel result, namely explicit bounds of the form $1/\zeta(\sigma + it) \ll (\log{t})^{2/3} (\log\log{t})^{1/4}$.

Abstract:We prove a version of the prime number theorem for arithmetic progressions that is uniform enough to deduce the Siegel–Walfisz theorem, Hoheisel's asymptotic for intervals of length , a Brun–Titchmarsh bound, and Linnik's bound on the least prime in an arithmetic progression as corollaries. Our proof uses the Vinogradov–Korobov zero-free region, a log-free zero density estimate, and the Deuring–Heilbronn zero repulsion phenomenon. Improvements exist when the modulus is sufficiently powerful.

Abstract:In our previous article (Camargo and Martin in Bull Braz Math Soc New Ser 53:501–522, 2022), we presented some families of sets such that the sum of the Möbius function over is constant and equals to and we showed that the existence of such sets is intimately connected with the existence of the alternating series used by Tschebyschef and Sylvester to bound the prime counter function . In this note, we answer two open questions stated in the last section of (Camargo and Martin 2022) about the general structure of these constant functions. In particular, we show that every such constant function can be characterized by Tschebyschef–Sylvester alternating series. We also show that the asymptotic sizes of the sets connects to the Sylvester's Stigmata of the Tschebyschef–Sylvester series.

Abstract:We prove that the primes below $x$ are, on average, equidistributed in arithmetic progressions to smooth moduli of size up to $x^{1/2+1/40-\epsilon}$. The exponent of distribution $\tfrac{1}{2} + \tfrac{1}{40}$ improves on a result of Polymath, who had previously obtained the exponent $\tfrac{1}{2} + \tfrac{7}{300}$. As a consequence, we improve results on intervals of bounded length which contain many primes, showing that $\liminf_{n \rightarrow \infty} (p_{n+m}-p_n) = O(\exp(3.8075 m))$. The main new ingredient of our proof is a modification of the q-van der Corput process. It allows us to exploit additional averaging for the exponential sums which appear in the Type I estimates of Polymath.

Abstract:We study the existence of products of primes in arithmetic progressions, building on the work of Ramaré and Walker. One of our main results is that if q is a large modulus, then any invertible residue class mod q contains a product of three primes where each prime is at most q6/5+ε . Our arguments use results from a wide range of areas, such as sieve theory or additive combinatorics, and one of our key ingredients, which has not been used in this setting before, is a result by Heath‐Brown on character sums over primes from his paper on Linnik's theorem.

Abstract:Fermat's Little Theorem states that if p is a prime number and gcd (x,p) = 1, then xp−1 ≡ 1 (modp) If the requirement that gcd (x,p) = 1 is dropped, we can say xp ≡ x(modp)for any integer x. Euler generalized Fermat's Theorem in the following way: if gcd (x,n) = 1 then xφ(n) ≡ 1(modn), where φ is the Euler phi-function. It is clear that Euler's result cannot be extended to all integers x in the same way Fermat's Theorem can; that is, the congruence xφ(n)+1 ≡ x(modn)is not always valid. In this note we show exactly when the congruence xφ(n)+1 ≡ x(modn) is valid.
