Abstract:We study matrix coefficients of the unitary (and also the completely bounded) representations of SL(2;R) and its universal covering group. We describe the asymptotic distribution of column vectors in terms of Whittaker functions, exhibiting also a relationship to the Fourier transform.

Abstract:Estimates for matrix coefficients of unitary representations of semisimple Lie groups have been studied for a long time, starting with the seminal work by Bargmann, by Ehrenpreis and Mautner, and by Kunze and Stein. Two types of estimates have been established: on the one hand, $L^p$ estimates, which are a dual formulation of the Kunze--Stein phenomenon, and which hold for all matrix coefficients, and on the other pointwise estimates related to asymptotic expansions at infinity, which are more precise but only hold for a restricted class of matrix coefficients. In this paper we prove a new type of estimate for the irreducibile unitary representations of $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ and for the so-called metaplectic representation, which we believe has the best features of, and implies, both forms of estimate described above. As an application outside representation theory, we prove a new $L^2$ estimate of dispersive type for the free Schrödinger equation in $\mathbb{R}^n$.

Abstract:Let G be a semisimple Lie group with a Cartan decomposition G = K exp($\mathfrak{p}$). For every finite-dimensional representation of G, there is an inner product on the representation space such that with respect to it, K acts as unitary operators, and exp($\mathfrak{p}$) acts as positive definite Hermitian operators. In this paper, we observe that similar phenomena appear for infinite-dimensional representations with real infinitesimal characters.

Abstract:We study the asymptotic behaviour of the cohomology of subgroups $\Gamma$ of an algebraic group $G$ with coefficients in the various irreducible rational representations of $G$ and raise a conjecture about it. Namely, we expect that the dimensions of these cohomology groups approximate the $\ell^2$-Betti numbers of $\Gamma$ with a controlled error term. We provide positive answers when $G$ is a product of copies of $SL_2$. As an application, we obtain new proofs of J. Lott's and W. Lück's computation of the $\ell^2$-Betti numbers of hyperbolic $3$-manifolds and W. Fu's upper bound on the growth of cusp forms for non totally real fields, which is sharp in the imaginary quadratic case.

Abstract:Voiculescu discovered asymptotic freeness of independent Haar-distributed unitary matrices. Many refinements have been obtained, including strong asymptotic freeness of random unitaries and strong asymptotic freeness of random permutations acting on the orthogonal of the Perron-Frobenius eigenvector. In this paper, we consider a new matrix unitary model appearing naturally from representation theory of compact groups. We fix a nontrivial signature , i.e. two finite sequences of non-increasing natural numbers, and for large enough, consider the irreducible representation of associated with the signature . We consider the quotient of viewed as a matrix subgroup of , and show that strong asymptotic freeness holds in this generalized context when drawing independent copies of the Haar measure. We also obtain the orthogonal variant of this result. Thanks to classical results in representation theory, this result is closely related to strong asymptotic freeness for tensors, which we establish as a preliminary. To achieve this result, we need to develop four new tools, each of independent theoretical interest: (i) a centered Weingarten calculus and uniform estimates thereof, (ii) a systematic and uniform comparison of Gaussian moments and unitary moments of matrices, (iii) a generalized and simplified operator-valued non-backtracking theory in a general -algebra, and finally, (iv) combinatorics of tensor moment matrices.

Abstract:We discuss the Gelfand-Kazhdan criterion for covering groups with abelian covering tori and also investigate several aspects of the local coefficients matrix for genuine principal series representations of coverings of SL2. The goal is to carry out some preliminary study on some invariants attached to the local coefficients matrix, with a view toward a theory of gamma-factors and L-functions for genuine representations of covering groups.

Abstract:We compute the asymptotics of matrix elements in canonical bases of irreducible representations of the unitary group as the highest weight goes to infinity, in terms of the symplectic geometry of the associated coadjoint orbit. This uses tools of Berezin-Toeplitz quantization, and recovers as a special case the asymptotics of Wigner's d-matrix elements for the spin representations in quantum mechanics.

Abstract:Matrix Schubert varieties (Fulton '92) carry natural actions of Levi groups. Their coordinate rings are thereby Levi-representations; what is a combinatorial counting rule for the multiplicities of their irreducibles? When the Levi group is a torus, (Knutson-Miller '04) answers the question. We present a general solution, a common refinement of the multigraded Hilbert series, the Cauchy identity, and the Littlewood-Richardson rule. Our result applies to any ``bicrystalline'' algebraic variety; we define these using the operators of (Kashiwara '95) and of (Danilov-Koshevoi '05, van Leeuwen '06). The proof introduces a ``filtered'' generalization of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence.

Abstract:In 2001--2013 Derkachov and Manashov with coauthors obtained simple and natural expressions of $R$-matrices for the principal series of representations of the groups $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$, $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$, $\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb{C})$, $\mathrm{SO}(1,n)$. The Yang--Baxter identities for these intertwining operators are kinds of multivariate hypergeometric transformations. Derivations of the identities are based on calculations 'of physical level of rigor' with divergent integrals. Our purpose is a formal mathematical justification of these results.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide a simpler proof of the Krötz--Stanton Extension Theorem for holomorphic extensions of orbit maps in unitary irreducible representations of connected semisimple Lie groups. Our result is a generalization of the previous result as it applies to Hilbert globalizations of finitely generated admissible $(\mathfrak{g},K)$-modules for arbitrary connected semisimple Lie groups $G$ with not necessarily finite center. Furthermore, we give polynomial growth estimates for the norms of the holomorphic extensions of the orbit maps of $K$-finite vectors in irreducible unitary representations. We use this to prove that, at the boundary of the principal crown bundle, these holomorphic extensions have boundary values in the space of distribution vectors.

Abstract:For every absolutely irreducible orthogonal representation of a twisted form of SL 2 \operatorname {SL}_2 over a field of characteristic zero, we compute the “unique” symmetric bilinear form that is invariant under the group action. We also prove the analogous result for Weyl modules in prime characteristic (including characteristic 2) and an isomorphism between two symmetric bilinear forms given by binomial coefficients.

Abstract:We work out a generalization of the Szegö limit theorems on the determinant of large matrices. We focus on matrices with nonzero leading principal minors and elements that decay to zero exponentially fast with the distance from the main diagonal, but we relax the constraint of the Toeplitz structure. We obtain an expression for the asymptotic behaviour of the determinant written in terms of the factors of a left and right Wiener-Hopf type factorization of an appropriately defined symbol. For matrices with elements varying slowly along the diagonals (e.g., in locally Toeplitz sequences), we propose to apply the analogue of the semiclassical expansion of the Moyal star product in phase-space quantum mechanics. This is a systematic method that provides approximations up to any order in the typical scale of the inhomogeneity and allows us to obtain explicit asymptotic formulas.

Abstract:We study solutions of a quadratic matrix equation arising in Riemannian geometry. Let $S$ be a real symmetric $n\times n$-matrix with zeros on the diagonal and let $\theta$ be a real number. We construct nonzero solutions $(S,\theta)$ of the set of quadratic equations \[\sum_kS_{i,k}=0\quad\text{ and }\quad\sum_{k}S_{i,k}S_{k,j}+S_{i,j}^2=\theta S_{i,j}\text { for }i<j.\] Our solutions relate the equations to strongly regular graphs, to group rings, and to multiplicative characters of finite fields.

Abstract:We study $2\times 2$ matrices over noncommutative rings with anti-involution, with a special focus on the symplectic group $\mathrm{Sp}_2(\mathcal{A},\sigma)$. We define traces and determinants of such matrices and use them to prove a Cayley Hamilton identity and trace relations which generalize well known relations for elements of $\mathrm{SL}_2(R)$ over a commutative ring. We compare the structure of elements of $\mathrm{Sp}_2(\mathcal{A},\sigma)$ with Manin matrices over general noncommutative rings; this naturally leads to a quantization $\mathrm{Sp}_2(\mathcal{A},\sigma)_q$. In contrast to the usual definition of the quantum group as a deformation of the ring of matrix functions on $\mathrm{SL}_2(R)$, this quantization produces a group of matrices over a new noncommutative ring with involution. We finish the comparison by constructing a generalization of a Hopf algebra structure on the noncommutative ring of matrix functions of our quantum group. Finally, we use the noncommutative surface-type cluster algebras of Berenstein and Retakh to give a geometric interpretation of our Hopf algebra structure and to produce noncommutative generalizations of Markov numbers over many rings with involution including the complex numbers, dual numbers, matrix rings, and group rings.

Abstract:We prove a number of unconditional statistical results of the Hecke coefficients for unitary cuspidal representations of $\operatorname{GL}(2)$ over number fields. Using partial bounds on the size of the Hecke coefficients, instances of Langlands functoriality, and properties of Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions, we obtain bounds on the set of places where linear combinations of Hecke coefficients are negative. Under a mild functoriality assumption we extend these methods to $\operatorname{GL}(n)$. As an application, we obtain a result related to a question of Serre about the occurrence of large Hecke eigenvalues of Maass forms. Furthermore, in the cases where the Ramanujan conjecture is satisfied, we obtain distributional results of the Hecke coefficients at places varying in certain congruence or Galois classes.

Abstract:We use the well-known isomorphism between operator algebras and function spaces equipped with a star product to study the asymptotic properties of certain matrix sequences in which the matrix dimension $D$ tends to infinity. Our approach is based on the $su(2)$ coherent states which allow for a systematic 1/D expansion of the star product. This produces a trace formula for functions of the matrix sequence elements in the large-$D$ limit which includes higher order (finite-$D$) corrections. From this a variety of analytic results pertaining to the asymptotic properties of the density of states, eigenstates and expectation values associated with the matrix sequence follows. It is shown how new and existing results in the settings of collective spin systems and orthogonal polynomial sequences can be readily obtained as special cases. In particular, this approach allows for the calculation of higher order corrections to the zero distributions of a large class of orthogonal polynomials.

Abstract:Asymptotic properties of a vector of length power functionals of random geometric graphs are investigated. Algebraic properties of the asymptotic covariance matrix are studied as the intensity of the underlying homogeneous Poisson point process increases. This includes a systematic discussion of matrix properties like rank, definiteness, determinant, eigenspaces or decompositions of interest. For the formulation of the results a case distinction is necessary. In the three possible regimes the respective covariance matrix is of quite different nature which leads to different statements. Stochastic consequences for random geometric graphs are derived.
