Abstract:Theoretical axion models state that axions are very weakly interacting particles. In order to experimentally detect them, the use of colorful and inspired techniques becomes mandatory. There is a wide variety of experimental approaches that were developed during the last 30 years, most of them make use of the Primakoff effect, by which axions convert into photons in the presence of an electromagnetic field. We review the experimental techniques used to search for axions and will give an outlook on experiments planned for the near future.

Grain-boundary grooving and agglomeration of alloy thin films with a slow-diffusing species

Abstract:We present a general phase-field model for grain-boundary grooving and agglomeration of polycrystalline alloy thin films. In particular, we study the effects of slow-diffusing species on grooving rate. As the groove grows, the slow species becomes concentrated near the groove tip so that further grooving is limited by the rate at which it diffuses away from the tip. At early times the dominant diffusion path is along the boundary, while at late times it is parallel to the substrate. This change in path strongly affects the time-dependence of grain boundary grooving and increases the time to agglomeration. The present model provides a tool for agglomeration-resistant thin film alloy design. keywords: phase-field, thermal grooving, diffusion, kinetics, metal silicides

In the following I review the motivations for the existence of axions, the theories underlying them, and the methods to search for them. The target audience is an interested amateur, physics undergraduate, or scientist in another field, and so I use no complicated mathematics or advanced theoretical topics, and instead use lots of analogies.

Abstract:A very light axion would be copiously produced during the Big Bang as a zero-temperature Bose gas, and it would possess vanishingly small couplings to matter and radiation. It thus represents an ideal cold dark matter candidate. Galactic halo axions may be detected by their resonant conversion to microwave photons in a high-Q cavity permeated by a strong magnetic field. A large-scale search for the axion is ongoing in the US with sufficient sensitivity to see axions of plausible model couplings. Dramatic breakthroughs in the development of near-quantum limited superconducting quantum interference device amplifiers promise to improve the sensitivity of the experiment by a factor of 30 in the near future. In Japan, a group has been developing a Rydberg atom single-quantum detector as an alternative to linear amplifiers for a microwave-cavity axion experiment. Should the axion be discovered, the predicted fine structure in the axion signal would be rich in information about the history of galactic formation.

Abstract:The axion is a highly motivated elementary particle that could address two fundamental questions in physics—the strong charge-parity (CP) problem and the dark matter mystery. Experimental searches for this hypothetical particle started reaching theoretically interesting sensitivity levels, particularly in the micro–electron volt (gigahertz) region. They rely on microwave resonators in strong magnetic fields with signals read out by quantum noise limited amplifiers. Concurrently, there have been intensive experimental efforts to widen the search range by devising various techniques and to enhance sensitivities by implementing advanced technologies. These orthogonal approaches will enable us to explore most of the parameter space for axions and axion-like particles within the next decades, with the 1- to 25-gigahertz frequency range to be conquered well within the first decade. We review the experimental aspects of axion physics and discuss the past, present, and future of the direct search programs.

Abstract:Utilizing a helical magnet profile to enhance axion-photon conversion showed great promise in laboratory searches for high axion masses. We extend the mechanism, known as the axion-magnetic resonance (AMR), from laser experiments to axion helioscopes and demonstrate its potential in covering QCD axion parameter space. Specifically, we apply AMR to the CAST experiment legacy, make projections for the upcoming IAXO experiment, and assess its implications for both axion-like particles and QCD axions. We observe considerable improvement in the experiment's sensitivity reach in all cases.

New mechanism producing axions in the AQN model and how the CAST can discover them

Abstract:We advocate the idea that there is a fundamentally new mechanism for the axion production in the Sun, which has never been discussed previously in the literature. This novel mechanism of the axion production is based on the so-called Axion Quark Nugget (AQN) Dark Matter Model. These axions will be produced in addition to well studied axions emitted due to the Primakoff effect. The AQN model was originally invented as a natural explanation of the observed ratio $\Omega_{\rm dark} \sim \Omega_{\rm visible}$ when the DM and visible matter densities assume the same order of magnitude values, irrespectively to the axion mass $m_a$ or initial misalignment angle $\theta_0$. This model, without adjustment of any parameters, reproduces reasonably the intensity of the extreme UV (EUV) radiation from the solar corona as a result of the AQN annihilation events with the solar material. This extra energy released in corona represents a resolution, within AQN framework, a long standing puzzle known in the literature as the "solar corona heating mystery". The same annihilation events also produce the relativistic axions. This represents a new mechanism of the axion production, and constitutes the main subject of this work. The flux of these axions is unambiguously fixed in this model and expressed in terms of the EUV luminosity from corona. We also compute the spectral properties of these axions and make few comments on the potentials for the discovery of these solar axions by the upgraded CAST (CERN Axion Solar Axion) experiment.

Abstract:It has been suggested that certain antiferromagnetic topological insulators contain axion quasiparticles (AQs), and that such materials could be used to detect axion dark matter (DM). The AQ is a longitudinal antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation coupled to the electromagnetic Chern-Simons term, which, in the presence of an applied magnetic field, leads to mass mixing between the AQ and the electric field. The electromagnetic boundary conditions and transmission and reflection coefficients are computed. A model for including losses into this system is presented, and the resulting linewidth is computed. It is shown how transmission spectroscopy can be used to measure the resonant frequencies and damping coefficients of the material, and demonstrate conclusively the existence of the AQ. The dispersion relation and boundary conditions permit resonant conversion of axion DM into THz photons in a material volume that is independent of the resonant frequency, which is tuneable via an applied magnetic field. A parameter study for axion DM detection is performed, computing boost amplitudes and bandwidths using realistic material properties including loss. The proposal could allow for detection of axion DM in the mass range between 1 and 10 meV using current and near future technology.

Abstract:The axion has emerged in recent years as a leading particle candidate to provide the mysterious dark matter in the cosmos, as we review here for a general scientific audience. We describe first the historical roots of the axion in the Standard Model of particle physics and the problem of charge-parity invariance of the strong nuclear force. We then discuss how the axion emerges as a dark matter candidate and how it is produced in the early universe. The symmetry properties of the axion dictate the form of its interactions with ordinary matter. Astrophysical considerations restrict the particle mass and interaction strengths to a limited range, which facilitates the planning of experiments to detect the axion. A companion review discusses the exciting prospect that the axion could be detected in the near term in the laboratory.

Abstract:Axions are hypothetical particles that were proposed to solve the strong charge–parity problem in high-energy physics. Although they have long been known in quantum field theory, axions have so far not been observed as elementary particles in nature. Yet, in condensed-matter systems, axions can also emerge as quasiparticles in certain materials such as strong topological insulators. The corresponding axion field is expected to lead to exciting physical phenomena in condensed-matter systems, such as a fractional quantum anomalous Hall effect, the chiral anomaly, exotic Casimir–Lifshitz repulsion and a linear magnetoelectric response quantized in units of the fine-structure constant. First signatures of electronic states that permit axion dynamics have been reported in condensed-matter systems. In this Review, we explore the concepts that introduce axion fields in condensed-matter systems and present experimental findings. We discuss predicted and realized material systems, the prospects of using axion electrodynamics for next-generation devices and the search for axions as a possible constituent of dark matter. Axion fields provide a unique way to understand large quantized electromagnetic responses in topological insulators and dynamics in Weyl semimetals. This Review discusses the theory of axion fields in condensed matter, their experimental realization and their application in next-generation devices.

Exact Failure Frequency Calculations for Extended Systems

Abstract:This paper shows how the steady-state availability and failure frequency can be calculated in a single pass for very large systems, when the availability is expressed as a product of matrices. We apply the general procedure to $k$-out-of-$n$:G and linear consecutive $k$-out-of-$n$:F systems, and to a simple ladder network in which each edge and node may fail. We also give the associated generating functions when the components have identical availabilities and failure rates. For large systems, the failure rate of the whole system is asymptotically proportional to its size. This paves the way to ready-to-use formulae for various architectures, as well as proof that the differential operator approach to failure frequency calculations is very useful and straightforward.

Exploring the axion potential and axion walls in dense quark matter

Abstract:We study the potential of the Quantum Chromodynamics axion in hot and/or dense quark matter, within a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio-like model that includes the coupling of the axion to quarks. Differently from previous studies, we implement local electrical neutrality and $\beta-$equilibrium, which are relevant for the description of the quark matter in the core of compact stellar objects. Firstly we compute the effects of the chiral crossover on the axion mass and self-coupling. We find that the low energy properties of axion are very sensitive to the phase transition of Quantum Chromodynamics, in particular, when the bulk quark matter is close to criticality. Then, for the first time in the literature we compute the axion potential at finite quark chemical potential and study the axion domain walls in bulk quark matter. We find that the energy barrier between two adjacent vacuum states decrease in the chirally restored phase: this results in a lower surface tension of the walls. Finally, we comment on the possibility of production of walls in dense quark matter.

Axion-induced pair production: a new strategy for axion detection

Abstract:We revisit and update the axion-induced pair production process in a nuclear electric field mediated by the axion-electron coupling, $a+{{}^{A}_{Z}X} \rightarrow {{}^{A}_{Z}X} + e^{+} + e^{-}$. This process emerges as one of the most efficient channels for detecting axions with energies above a few MeV in large underground detectors. It is particularly relevant for detecting axions produced in nuclear reactions, such as the $p+d~\rightarrow~{ }^3 \mathrm{He}~+~a(5.5\,\mathrm{MeV})$ reaction in the solar pp-chain, and for axions originating in supernovae. Despite recent interest in detecting high-energy axions, the pair production process has received limited attention, even in scenarios where it is the dominant detection channel. This study fills this gap by demonstrating that pair production is a highly effective detection mechanism for high-energy axions. We apply our results to axions from supernovae and the solar 5.5 MeV line, recasting the current bounds of Borexino and comparing the detection capabilities of the JUNO and Hyper-Kamiokande detectors.

Axion Electrodyanmics in the Presence of Current Sources

Abstract:Axions are among the most sought-after candidates for dark matter. In the ultralight regime, they could help alleviate puzzles in small scale cosmology. Searches for a halo of axion dark matter rely on the electromagnetic response to a magnetic field. In this work, we resolve a number of issues in the determination of this response by carefully solving Maxwell's equations in the presence of an axion background. We find that the electric field induced by a magnetic field in an axion background is significant and unsuppressed by the size of the experiment.

Abstract:This article reports the first study of possible emissions of axions from power reactors using Primakoff and Compton conversions as the detection mechanisms. The expected experimental signatures are mono-energetic lines produced by their Primakoff or Compton conversions at a high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector. No evidence of axion emissions were observed and constraints on axion couplings versus axion mass within the framework of invisible axion models were placed. This experimental approach provides a unique probe for axion mass at the keV-MeV range not accessible to the other techniques.

Abstract:Axions comprise a broad class of particles that can play a major role in explaining the unknown aspects of cosmology. They are also well-motivated within high energy physics, appearing in theories related to CP-violation in the standard model, supersymmetric theories, and theories with extra-dimensions, including string theory, and so axion cosmology offers us a unique view onto these theories. I review the motivation and models for axions in particle physics and string theory. I then present a comprehensive and pedagogical view on the cosmology and astrophysics of axion-like particles, starting from inflation and progressing via BBN, the CMB, reionization and structure formation, up to the present-day Universe. Topics covered include: axion dark matter (DM); direct and indirect detection of axions, reviewing existing and future experiments; axions as dark radiation; axions and the cosmological constant problem; decays of heavy axions; axions and stellar astrophysics; black hole superradiance; axions and astrophysical magnetic fields; axion inflation, and axion DM as an indirect probe of inflation. A major focus is on the population of ultralight axions created via vacuum realignment, and its role as a DM candidate with distinctive phenomenology. Cosmological observations place robust constraints on the axion mass and relic density in this scenario, and I review where such constraints come from. I next cover aspects of galaxy formation with axion DM, and ways this can be used to further search for evidence of axions. An absolute lower bound on DM particle mass is established. It is ma>10−24eV from linear observables, extending to ma≳10−22eV from non-linear observables, and has the potential to reach ma≳10−18eV in the future. These bounds are weaker if the axion is not all of the DM, giving rise to limits on the relic density at low mass. This leads to the exciting possibility that the effects of axion DM on structure formation could one day be detected, and the axion mass and relic density measured from cosmological observables.
Axion Icebergs: Clockwork ALPs at hadron colliders

Abstract:The conventional ultralight QCD axion is typically rendered invisible at collider experiments by its large decay constant. What could also hint at its possible existence is the observation of other (heavy) particles that are characteristically related to the light axion. One such scenario is afforded within the framework of the clockwork mechanism where the axion can have suppressed couplings with the gluons or photons while its companion axion-like particles (ALPs) have relatively unsuppressed couplings. We study a minimal clockwork model for the QCD axion invoking a KSVZ-like setup and examine the visibility of the ALPs $(a_n)$ at the LHC through the process $p p \to a_n \, (+ \,{\rm additional \, jets})$, $a_n \to \gamma \gamma$. The model contains $N$ ALPs with a decay constant $f$ and masses defined by a scale $m$ characteristic of the nearest-neighbour interactions of the scalar fields. For $10\lesssim m \lesssim 100$ GeV, $f \sim 1$ TeV and $N \sim \mathcal{O}(10)$, the full spectrum of ALPs is accessible and the corresponding diphoton invariant mass distribution comprises a unique signature of a wide band of resonances. For the case of light ALPs $(m \sim \mathcal{O}(10 \,{\rm GeV}))$ with the axion being a dark matter candidate, the mass-splittings among the former are so small that the signal profile mimics that of a single broad resonance, or an $\textit{axion iceberg}$. The effect subsides for heavier ALPs, albeit still exhibiting undulating peaks. For light ALPs, the scenario is imminently testable by the end of LHC's Run 3 phase, with the estimated cumulative significance reaching the discovery threshold for an integrated luminosity of $\sim 300 {\rm \,fb^{-1}}$. While the signals for the heavier ALPs in this minimal setup may not be as prominent within the ongoing LHC operation, one could expect to probe a wider parameter space of the model at the forthcoming HL-LHC.
