Abstract:Explicit representations for the Hermite interpolation and their derivatives of any order are provided. Furthermore, suppose that the interpolated function f has continuous derivatives of sufficiently high order on some sufficiently small neighborhood of a given point x and any group of nodes are also given on the neighborhood. If the derivatives of any order of the Hermite interpolation polynomial of f at the point x are applied to approximating the corresponding derivatives of the function f ( x ), the asymptotic representations for the remainder are presented.

We also investigate Besov spaces generated by Freud weight and their connection with algebraic polynomial approximation in$L_p (R)_{W_\lambda } $, wherew α is a Jacobi-type weight onS, 0<p ≤ ∞,S is a simplex andW λ is a Freud weight. An explicit construction of optimized interpolation points on the 4-simplex

Abstract:In this work, a family of symmetric interpolation points are generated on the four-dimensional simplex (i.e. the pentatope). These points are optimized in order to minimize the Lebesgue constant. The process of generating these points closely follows that outlined by Warburton in "An explicit construction of interpolation nodes on the simplex," Journal of Engineering Mathematics, 2006. Here, Warburton generated optimal interpolation points on the triangle and tetrahedron by formulating explicit geometric warping and blending functions, and applying these functions to equidistant nodal distributions. The locations of the resulting points were Lebesgue-optimized. In our work, we extend this procedure to four dimensions, and construct interpolation points on the pentatope up to order ten. The Lebesgue constants of our nodal sets are calculated, and are shown to outperform those of equidistant nodal distributions.

Abstract:Multivariate Birkhoff rational interpolation is the most general algebraic interpolation scheme. There is few literature on this problem due to the complex structure of the rational function and the non-continuity of the orders of the derivative interpolating conditions. In this paper, by adding the lacking derivative conditions and setting the artificial interpolating values as undetermined parameters, we propose a parametric linearization method to convert the problem of finding a multivariate Birkhoff rational interpolation function into solving a parametric polynomial system in which the coefficients in the numerator and denominator are the unknowns. We use the parametric triangular decomposition to solve the system and prove the solution provides a Birkhoff rational interpolation function as long as there exist proper parameters such that the denominator does not vanish at each interpolating point. The algorithm is implemented in Maple 15.

Abstract:This paper considers the extension of classical Lagrange interpolation in one real or complex variable to "polynomials of one quaternionic variable". To do this we develop some aspects of the theory of such polynomials. We then give a number of related multivariate polynomial interpolation schemes for ${\mathbb{R}}^4$ and ${\mathbb{C}}^2$ with good geometric properties, and some aspects of least interpolation and of Kergin interpolation.

Abstract:We develop a discrete framework for the interpolation of Banach spaces, which contains the well-known real and complex interpolation methods, but also more recent methods like the Rademacher, $\gamma$- and $\ell^q$-interpolation methods. Our framework is based on a sequential structure imposed on a Banach space, which allows us to deduce properties of interpolation methods from properties of sequential structures. Our framework has a formulation modelled after both the real and the complex interpolation methods. This enables us to extend various results, previously known only for either the real or the complex interpolation method, to all interpolation methods that fit into our framework. As applications, we prove an interpolation result for analytic operator families and an interpolation result for intersections.

Abstract:In this paper, we give new sparse interpolation algorithms for black box univariate and multivariate rational functions h=f/g whose coefficients are integers with an upper bound. The main idea is as follows: choose a proper integer beta and let h(beta) = a/b with gcd(a,b)=1. Then f and g can be computed by solving the polynomial interpolation problems f(beta)=ka and g(beta)=ka for some integer k. It is shown that the univariate interpolation algorithm is almost optimal and multivariate interpolation algorithm has low complexity in T but the data size is exponential in n.

Abstract:A classical fact is that through any $d+3$ general points in $\mathbb{P}_\mathbb{C}^d$ there exists a unique rational normal curve of degree $d$ passing through them. We generalize this by proving the following: when $n$ is odd, for any $\binom{n+2}{2} + n+1$ general points in $\mathbb{P}_\mathbb{C}^{\binom{n+2}{2} - 1}$, there exist at least $2^{n(n-1)}$ degree 2 Veroneses passing through them. This makes substantial progress on a question of Aaron Landesman and Anand Patel, and extends the work of Arthur Coble.

Abstract:We consider the problem of interpolating a function given on scattered points using Hermite-Birkhoff formulas on the sphere and other manifolds. We express each proposed interpolant as a linear combination of basis functions, the combination coefficients being incomplete Taylor expansions of the interpolated function at the interpolation points. The basis functions have the following features: (i) depend on the geodesic distance; (ii) are orthonormal with respect to the point-evaluation functionals; and (iii) have all derivatives equal zero up to a certain order at the interpolation points. Moreover, the construction of such interpolants, which belong to the class of partition of unity methods, takes advantage of not requiring any solution of linear systems.

Abstract:Analytic interpolation problems with rationality and derivative constraints occur in many applications in systems and control. In this paper we present a new method for the multivariable case, which generalizes our previous results on the scalar case. This turns out to be quite nontrivial, as it poses many new problems. A basic step in the procedure is to solve a Riccati type matrix equation. To this end, an algorithm based on homotopy continuation is provided.
Interpolation in Weighted Projective Spaces

Abstract:Over an algebraically closed field, the $\textit{double point interpolation}$ problem asks for the vector space dimension of the projective hypersurfaces of degree $d$ singular at a given set of points. After being open for 90 years, a series of papers by J. Alexander and A. Hirschowitz in 1992--1995 settled this question in what is referred to as the Alexander-Hirschowitz theorem. In this paper we primarily use commutative algebra to lay the groundwork necessary to prove analogous statements in the $\textit{weighted projective space}$, a natural generalization of the projective space. We show the Hilbert function of general simple points in any $n$-dimensional weighted projective space exhibits the expected behavior. We give an inductive procedure for weighted projective space, similar to that originally due to A. Terracini from 1915, to demonstrate an example of a weighted projective plane where the analogue of the Alexander-Hirschowitz theorem holds without exceptions. We further adapt Terracini's lemma regarding secant varieties to give an interpolation bound for an infinite family of weighted projective planes.

Abstract:We study the Waldschmidt constant of some configurations in the projective plane. In the first part, we show that the Waldschmidt constant of a set $\mathbb{X}$ of $n$ points where at least $n-3$ points among them lie on a line is either equal to $1, \frac{2n-3}{n-1}, 2, \frac{16}{7}, \frac{7}{3}, \frac{17}{7},$ or $\frac{5}{2}$. Together with the Hilbert polynomials, this gives a complete geometric characterization for $\mathbb{X}$. Next, we study some specific configurations whose Waldschmidt constants are bounded from above by $\frac{5}{2}$. Under this condition, we describe all configurations of $n$ points with $n-1$ points among them lying on an irreducible conic, and we also study some specific configurations of $9$ points.

Abstract:In this paper we solve the poisedness problem for a bivariate interpolation introduced by B. Bojanov and Y. Xu. The authors were informed the problem was solved earlier, by a different method, also by B. Bojanov and Y. Xu (to appear, On a Hermite interpolation by polynomials of two variables, SIAM J. Numer. Anal.). Parameters of the original interpolation from Π2k are the values of a function and its radial derivatives up to some order k at 2k+1 equidistant nodes of the unit circumference. We also consider other closely related polynomial interpolations and prove their poisedness. Meanwhile the poisedness of several general univariate Birkhoff interpolation problems is proved to which the above problem is reduced. At the end we consider the corresponding useful cubature formulas.

Abstract:A quite comprehensive theory of analytic interpolation with degree constraint, dealing with rational interpolants with an a priori bound, has been developed in recent years. In this paper we consider the limit case when this bound is removed, and only stable interpolants with a prescribed maximum degree are sought. This leads to weighted H 2 minimization, where the interpolants are parameterized by the weights. The inverse problem of determining the weight and the interpolation points given a desired interpolant profile is considered, and a rational approximation procedure based on the theory is proposed. This provides a tool for tuning the solution to specifications. The basic idea could also be applied to the case with bounded interpolants.
