Abstract:In this manuscript a design and implementation of CACC on an autonomous vehicle platform (2017 Ford Fusion) is presented. The developed CACC controls the intervehicle distance between the target vehicle and ego vehicle using a feedforward PD controller. In this design the feedforward information is the acceleration of the target vehicle which is communicated through Dedicated Short-Range Communication (DSRC) modem. The manuscript explains the detailed architecture of the designed CACC with used hardware and methods for the both simulation and experiments. Also, an approach to overcome detection failures at the curved roads is presented to improve overall quality of the designed CACC system. As a result, the initial simulation and experimental results with the designed CACC system is presented in the paper. The presented results indicate that CACC improves the car following performance of the ego vehicle as compared to the classical Adaptive Cruise Controller.
Systems and Control
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems Addressed by the Paper The paper primarily explores the design and implementation of Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) and validates through experiments that its performance surpasses that of traditional Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). Specifically: 1. **Enhancing Vehicle Following Performance**: - Researchers designed a CACC system based on a feedforward PD controller, which receives acceleration information of the vehicle ahead through Dedicated Short-Range Communication (DSRC). - The aim is to improve the following performance between vehicles, especially addressing detection failures on curved roads. 2. **Increasing Road Capacity and Fuel Efficiency**: - The CACC system increases road capacity by reducing the distance between vehicles (time gap). - When multiple vehicles travel in a platoon, CACC can also reduce unnecessary acceleration and deceleration, thereby improving fuel efficiency. 3. **Enhancing System Stability and Safety**: - Through improved distance strategies and control algorithms, CACC can better maintain a constant time gap, thus enhancing system stability. - Experimental results show that CACC performs better than traditional ACC systems in tracking the target vehicle. In summary, the paper aims to enhance the performance of autonomous vehicles in real driving environments through the design and implementation of the CACC system, including higher road capacity, better fuel economy, and increased safety.
