Abstract:Throughout this work, the vertex decomposability and shellability of graphs formed from other graphs by various operations are investigated. Also among the other things, by using some graph operations, new classes of Cohen-Macaulay graphs from previous ones are presented.

Abstract:We characterize Cohen-Macaulay posets of dimension two; they are precisely the shellable and strongly connected posets of dimension two. We also give a combinatorial description of these posets. Using the fact that co-comparability graph of a 2-dimensional poset is a permutation graph, we characterize Cohen-Macaulay permutation graphs.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a new criterion for the Cohen–Macaulayness of vertex splittable ideals, a family of monomial ideals recently introduced by Moradi and Khosh-Ahang. Our result relies on a Betti splitting of the ideal and provides an inductive way of checking the Cohen–Macaulay property. As a result, we obtain characterizations for Gorenstein, level and pseudo-Gorenstein vertex splittable ideals. Furthermore, we provide new and simpler combinatorial proofs of known Cohen–Macaulay criteria for several families of monomial ideals, such as (vector-spread) strongly stable ideals and (componentwise) polymatroidals. Finally, we characterize the family of bi-Cohen–Macaulay graphs by the novel criterion for the Cohen–Macaulayness of vertex splittable ideals.

Abstract:In attempting to understand how combinatorial modifications alter algebraic properties of monomial ideals, several authors have investigated the process of adding "whiskers" to graphs. In this paper, we study a similar construction to build a simplicial complex $\Delta_\chi$ from a coloring $\chi$ of a subset of the vertices of $\Delta$, and give necessary and sufficient conditions for this construction to produce vertex decomposable simplicial complexes. We apply this work to strengthen and give new proofs about sequentially Cohen-Macaulay edge ideals of graphs.

Abstract:A decomposition$${\fancyscript {D}}$$ of a graph H by a graph G is a partition of the edge set of H such that the subgraph induced by the edges in each part of the partition is isomorphic to G. The intersection graph$${I(\fancyscript {D})}$$ of the decomposition $${\fancyscript {D}}$$ has a vertex for each part of the partition and two parts A and B are adjacent iff they share a common node in H. If $${I(\fancyscript {D})\cong H}$$ , then $${\fancyscript {D}}$$ is an automorphic decomposition of H. In this paper we show how automorphic decompositions serve as a common generalization of configurations from geometry and graceful labelings on graphs. We will give several examples of automorphic decompositions as well as necessary conditions for their existence.

Abstract:Unit interval and interval complexes are higher-dimensional generalizations of unit interval and interval graphs, respectively. We show that strongly connected unit interval complexes are shellable with shellings induced by their unit interval orders. We also show that these complexes are vertex decomposable and hence shelling completable. On the other hand, we give simple examples of strongly connected interval complexes that are not shellable in dimensions two and higher.

Abstract:In this paper, a new general decomposition theory inspired from modular graph decomposition is presented. Our main result shows that, within this general theory, most of the nice algorithmic tools developed for modular decomposition are still efficient. This theory not only unifies the usual modular decomposition generalisations such as modular decomposition of directed graphs or decomposition of 2-structures, but also star cutsets and bimodular decomposition. Our general framework provides a decomposition algorithm which improves the best known algorithms for bimodular decomposition.

Abstract:Large networks are useful in a wide range of applications. Sometimes problem instances are composed of billions of entities. Decomposing and analyzing these structures helps us gain new insights about our surroundings. Even if the final application concerns a different problem (such as traversal, finding paths, trees, and flows), decomposing large graphs is often an important subproblem for complexity reduction or parallelization. This report is a summary of discussions that happened at Dagstuhl seminar 23331 on "Recent Trends in Graph Decomposition" and presents currently open problems and future directions in the area of (hyper)graph decomposition.

Abstract:In this article, we discuss the vertex decomposability of three well-studied simplicial complexes associated to forests. In particular, we show that the bounded degree complex of a forest and the complex of directed trees of a multidiforest are vertex decomposable. We then prove that the non-cover complex of a forest is either contractible or homotopy equivalent to a sphere. Finally, we provide a complete characterization of forests whose non-cover complexes are vertex decomposable.

On composition and decomposition operations for vector spaces, graphs and matroids

Abstract:In this paper, we study the ideas of composition and decomposition in the context of vector spaces, graphs and matroids. For vector spaces $\V_{AB},$ treated as collection of row vectors, with specified column set $A\uplus B,$ we define $\V_{SP}\lrarv \V_{PQ}, S\cap Q= \emptyset, $ to be the collection of all vectors $(f_S,f_Q)$ such that $(f_S,f_P)\in \V_{SP}, (f_P,f_Q)\in \V_{PQ}$. An analogous operation $\G_{SP}\lrarg \G_{PQ}\equivd \G_{PQ}$ can be defined in relation to graphs $\G_{SP}, \G_{PQ},$ on edge sets $S\uplus P, P\uplus Q,$ respectively in terms of an overlapping subgraph $\G_P$ which gets deleted in the right side graph (see for instance the notion of $k-sum$ \cite{oxley}). For matroids we define the `linking' $\M_{SP}\lrarm \M_{PQ} \equivd (\M_{SP}\vee \M_{PQ})\times (S\uplus Q)$, denoting the contraction operation by '$\times$'. In each case, we examine how to minimize the size of the `overlap' set $P,$ without affecting the right side entity. In the case of vector spaces, there is a polynomial time algorithm for achieving the minimum, which we present. Similar ideas work for graphs and for matroids under appropriate conditions. Next we consider the problem of decomposition. Here, in the case of vector spaces, the problem is to decompose $\V_{SQ}$ as $\V_{SP}\lrarv \V_{PQ},$ with minimum size $P.$ We give a polynomial time algorithm for this purpose. In the case of graphs and matroids we give a solution to this problem under certain restrictions.

Abstract:We introduce and study a digraph analogue of Stanley’s ψ -graphical arrangements from the perspectives of combinatorics and freeness. Our arrangements form a common generalization of various classes of arrangements in the literature including the Catalan arrangement, the Shi arrangement, the Ish arrangement, and especially the arrangements interpolating between Shi and Ish, recently introduced by Duarte and Guedes de Oliveira. The arrangements between Shi and Ish all are proved to have the same characteristic polynomial with all integer roots, thus raising the natural question of their freeness. We define two operations on digraphs, which we shall call king and coking elimination operations and prove that subject to certain conditions on the weight ψ , the operations preserve the characteristic polynomials and freeness of the associated arrangements. As an application, we affirmatively prove that the arrangements between Shi and Ish all are free, and among them only the Ish arrangement has supersolvable cone.

Abstract:Journal of Algebra and Its Applications, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we study almost Cohen–Macaulay bipartite graphs. In particular, we prove that if [math] is an almost Cohen–Macaulay bipartite graph with at least one vertex of positive degree, then there is a vertex of [math]. In particular, if [math] is an almost Cohen–Macaulay bipartite graph and [math] is a vertex of degree one of [math] and [math] its adjacent vertex, then [math] is almost Cohen–Macaulay. Also, we show that an unmixed Ferrers graph is almost Cohen–Macaulay if and only if it is connected in codimension two. Moreover, we give some examples.

Geometric vertex decomposition and liaison for toric ideals of graphs

Abstract:The geometric vertex decomposability property for polynomial ideals is an ideal-theoretic generalization of the vertex decomposability property for simplicial complexes. Indeed, a homogeneous geometrically vertex decomposable ideal is radical and Cohen-Macaulay, and is in the Gorenstein liaison class of a complete intersection (glicci). In this paper, we initiate an investigation into when the toric ideal $I_G$ of a finite simple graph $G$ is geometrically vertex decomposable. We first show how geometric vertex decomposability behaves under tensor products, which allows us to restrict to connected graphs. We then describe a graph operation that preserves geometric vertex decomposability, thus allowing us to build many graphs whose corresponding toric ideals are geometrically vertex decomposable. Using work of Constantinescu and Gorla, we prove that toric ideals of bipartite graphs are geometrically vertex decomposable. We also propose a conjecture that all toric ideals of graphs with a square-free degeneration with respect to a lexicographic order are geometrically vertex decomposable. As evidence, we prove the conjecture in the case that the universal Gröbner basis of $I_G$ is a set of quadratic binomials. We also prove that some other families of graphs have the property that $I_G$ is glicci.

Abstract:Coecke and Duncan recently introduced a categorical formalisation of the interaction of complementary quantum observables. In this paper we use their diagrammatic language to study graph states, a computationally interesting class of quantum states. We give a graphical proof of the fixpoint property of graph states. We then introduce a new equation, for the Euler decomposition of the Hadamard gate, and demonstrate that Van den Nest's theorem--locally equivalent graphs represent the same entanglement--is equivalent to this new axiom. Finally we prove that the Euler decomposition equation is not derivable from the existing axioms.

If G is a Cohen–Macaulay very well-covered graph, we deeply investigate some algebraic properties of the cover ideal of G via the Rees algebra associated to the ideal, and especially when G is a whisker graph.

Abstract:Let $\Delta$ be a pure simplicial complex on $n$ vertices having dimension $d$ and codimension $c = n-d-1$ in the simplex. Terai and Yoshida proved that if the number of facets of $\Delta$ is at least $\binom{n}{c}-2c+1$, then $\Delta$ is Cohen-Macaulay. We improve this result by showing that these hypotheses imply the stronger condition that $\Delta$ is vertex decomposable. We give examples to show that this bound is optimal, and that the conclusion cannot be strengthened to the class of matroids or shifted complexes. We explore an application to Simon's Conjecture and discuss connections to other results from the literature.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 1, Page 566-589, March 2024. Modular decomposition focuses on repeatedly identifying a module [math] (a collection of vertices that shares exactly the same neighborhood outside of [math]) and collapsing it into a single vertex. This notion of exactitude of neighborhood is very strict, especially when dealing with real-world graphs. We study new ways to relax this exactitude condition. However, generalizing modular decomposition is far from obvious. Most of the previous proposals lose algebraic properties of modules and thus most of the nice algorithmic consequences. We introduce the notion of an [math]-module, a relaxation that maintains some of the algebraic structure. It leads to a new combinatorial decomposition with interesting properties. Among the main results in this work, we show that minimal [math]-modules can be computed in polynomial time, and we generalize series and parallel operation between graphs. This leads to [math]-cographs which have interesting properties. We study how to generalize Gallai's theorem corresponding to the case for [math], but unfortunately we give evidence that computing such a decomposition tree can be difficult.
