Abstract:A recognized trend of research investigates generalizations of the Hadamard's inversion theorem to functions that may fail to be differentiable. In this vein, the present paper explores some consequences of a recent result about the existence of global Lipschitz continuous inverse by translating its assumptions of metric nature in terms of nonsmooth analysis constructions. This exploration focuses on continuous, but possibly not locally Lipschitz mappings, acting in finite-dimensional Euclidean spaces. As a result, sufficient conditions for global invertibility are formulated by means of strict estimators, ∗ -difference of convex compacta and regular/basic coderivatives. These conditions qualify the global inverse as a Lipschitz continuous mapping and provide quantitative estimates of its Lipschitz constant in terms of the above constructions.

Abstract:The convergence of the Neumann-type series to {1,2}-inverses has been shown by K. Tanabe [Linear Algebra Appl. 10 (1975) 163]. In this paper, these results indicating conditions characterizing the convergence of this series to different generalized inverses are extended. In addition, these results for obtaining different generalized inverses from the hyperpower method are applied. Finally, generalized involutory matrices are introduced and characterized using the obtained results.

It is proven that for two [Formula: see text]-invertible elements [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] in a ∗-ring, [Formula: see text] if and only if [Formula: see text]. For two [Formula: see text]-invertible elements [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] if and only if [Formula: see text]. Moreover, we give a characterization of [Formula: see text]-inverses, and the absorption law for [Formula: see text]-inverses is studied.

Abstract: Determination of quasi-invariant generalized functions is important for a variety of problems in representation theory, notably character theory and restriction problems. In this note, we review some new and easy-to-use techniques to show vanishing of quasi-invariant generalized functions, developed in the recent work of the authors (Uniqueness of Ginzburg-Rallis models: the Archimedean case, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 363, (2011), 2763-2802). The first two techniques involve geometric notions attached to submanifolds, which we call metrical properness and unipotent $\chi$-incompatibility. The third one is analytic in nature, and it arises from the first occurrence phenomenon in Howe correspondence. We also highlight how these techniques quickly lead to two well-known uniqueness results, on trilinear forms and Whittaker models.
A note on continuous functions on metric spaces

Abstract:Continuous functions on the unit interval are relatively tame from the logical and computational point of view. A similar behaviour is exhibited by continuous functions on compact metric spaces equipped with a countable dense subset. It is then a natural question what happens if we omit the latter 'extra data', i.e. work with 'unrepresented' compact metric spaces. In this paper, we study basic third-order statements about continuous functions on such unrepresented compact metric spaces in Kohlenbach's higher-order Reverse Mathematics. We establish that some (very specific) statements are classified in the (second-order) Big Five of Reverse Mathematics, while most variations/generalisations are not provable from the latter, and much stronger systems. Thus, continuous functions on unrepresented metric spaces are 'wild', though 'more tame' than (slightly) discontinuous functions on the reals.

Abstract:We introduce a generalization of the Cantor-Dedekind continuum with explicit infinitesimals. These infinitesimals are used as numbers obeying the same basic rules as the other elements of the generalized continuum, in accordance with Leibniz's original intuition, but with an important difference: their product is null, as the Dutch theologian Bernard Nieuwentijt sustained, against Leibniz's opinion. The starting-point is the concept of shadow, and from it we define indiscernibility (the central concept) and monad. Monads of points have a global-local nature, because in spite of being infinite-dimensional real affine spaces with the same cardinal as the whole generalized continuum, they are closed intervals with length 0. Monads and shadows (initially defined for points) are then extended to any subset of the new continuum, and their study reveals interesting results of preservation in the areas of set theory and topology. All these concepts do not depend on a definition of limit in the new continuum; yet using them we obtain the basic results of the differential calculus. Finally, we give two examples illustrating how the global-local nature of the monad of a real number can be applied to the differential treatment of certain singularities.

Abstract:This article introduces a weak pseudo-inverse of a monotone function, which is applied to prove that the associativity of a two-place function $T: [0,1]^2\rightarrow [0,1]$ defined by $T(x,y)=t^{[-1]}(F(t(x),t(y)))$ where $F:[0,\infty]^2\rightarrow[0,\infty]$ is an associative function with neutral element in $[0,\infty]$, $t: [0,1]\rightarrow [0,\infty]$ is a left continuous monotone function and $t^{[-1]}:[0,\infty]\rightarrow[0,1]$ is the weak pseudo-inverse of $t$ depends only on properties of the range of $t$.

Abstract:Inversion of operators is a fundamental concept in data processing. Inversion of linear operators is well studied, supported by established theory. When an inverse either does not exist or is not unique, generalized inverses are used. Most notable is the Moore-Penrose inverse, widely used in physics, statistics, and various fields of engineering. This work investigates generalized inversion of nonlinear operators. We first address broadly the desired properties of generalized inverses, guided by the Moore-Penrose axioms. We define the notion for general sets, and then a refinement, termed pseudo-inverse, for normed spaces. We present conditions for existence and uniqueness of a pseudo-inverse and establish theoretical results investigating its properties, such as continuity, its value for operator compositions and projection operators, and others. Analytic expressions are given for the pseudo-inverse of some well-known, non-invertible, nonlinear operators, such as hard- or soft-thresholding and ReLU. We analyze a neural layer and discuss relations to wavelet thresholding. Next, the Drazin inverse, and a relaxation, are investigated for operators with equal domain and range. We present scenarios where inversion is expressible as a linear combination of forward applications of the operator. Such scenarios arise for classes of nonlinear operators with vanishing polynomials, similar to the minimal or characteristic polynomials for matrices. Inversion using forward applications may facilitate the development of new efficient algorithms for approximating generalized inversion of complex nonlinear operators.

Abstract:The present paper is devoted to possible generalizations of the classic Lagrange Mean Value Theorem. We consider a real-valued function of several variables that is only assumed to be continuous. The main concept is to replace the notion of the derivative by the so called bisequential tangent cone. We first prove Rolle and Lagrange type results and then we turn to comparing this cone with the Clarke subdifferential in the case of a Lipschitz function. We also investigate an approach using normal cones.

Abstract:A well-known result of Bill Parry shows that a topologically transitive continuous piecewise monotone mapping with positive topological entropy is conjugate to a uniformly piecewise linear mapping with slope determined by the entropy. In this note we generalise Parry's result somewhat to what we call the class of essentially transitive mappings. This generalisation is of some interest in as much as for mappings with one turning point the converse also holds, i.e., a uniformly piecewise linear mapping with one turning point and with slope greater than 1 is essentially transitive.

Abstract:We present a unified representation theorem for the class of all outer generalized inverses of a bounded linear operator. Using this representation we develop a few specific expressions and computational procedures for the set of outer generalized inverses. The obtained result is a generalization of the well-known representation theorem of the Moore--Penrose inverse as well as a generalization of the well-known results for the Drazin inverse and the generalized inverse A T,S (2) . Also, as corollaries we get corresponding results for reflexive generalized inverses.

Abstract:The generalized inverse A T ,S of a matrix A is a {2}-inverse of A with the prescribed range T and null space S. A representation for the generalized inverse A T ,S has been recently developed with the condition σ(GA|T ) ⊂ (0,∞), where G is a matrix with R(G) = T and N(G) = S. In this note, we remove the above condition. Three types of iterative methods for A T ,S are presented if σ(GA|T ) is a subset of the open right half-plane and they are extensions of existing computational procedures of A T ,S , including special cases such as the weighted Moore-Penrose inverse AM,N and the Drazin inverse AD . Numerical examples are given to illustrate our results.

Abstract:In a Banach algebra, we introduce a new type of generalized inverse called g$\pi$-Hirano inverse. Firstly, several existence criteria and the equivalent definition of this inverse are investigated. Then, we discuss the relationship between the g$\pi$-Hirano invertibility of $a$, $b$ and that of the sum $a+b$ under some weaker conditions.
