Abstract:We show that there are infinitely many primes $p$ such that $p-1$ is divisible by a square $d^2 \geq p^\theta$ for $\theta=1/2+1/2000.$ This improves the work of Matomäki (2009) who obtained the result for $\theta=1/2-\varepsilon$ (with the added constraint that $d$ is also a prime), which improved the result of Baier and Zhao (2006) with $\theta=4/9-\varepsilon.$ Similarly as in the work of Matomäki, we apply Harman's sieve method to detect primes $p \equiv 1 \, (d^2)$. To break the $\theta=1/2$ barrier we prove a new bilinear equidistribution estimate modulo smooth square moduli $d^2$ by using a similar argument as Zhang (2014) used to obtain equidistribution beyond the Bombieri-Vinogradov range for primes with respect to smooth moduli. To optimize the argument we incorporate technical refinements from the Polymath project (2014). Since the moduli are squares, the method produces complete exponential sums modulo squares of primes which are estimated using the results of Cochrane and Zheng (2000).

Abstract:For a natural number n, let M(n) denote the maximum exponent of any prime power dividing n, and let m(n) denote the minimum exponent of any prime power dividing n. We study the second moments of these arithmetic functions and establish their limiting distributions. We introduce a new discrete probabilistic distribution dependent on a function f taking values in [0,1], study its first two moments, and provide examples of several arithmetic functions satisfying such distribution as their limiting behavior.

Abstract:Given an integer $k\ge2$, let $\omega_k(n)$ denote the number of primes that divide $n$ with multiplicity exactly $k$. We compute the density $e_{k,m}$ of those integers $n$ for which $\omega_k(n)=m$ for every integer $m\ge0$. We also show that the generating function $\sum_{m=0}^\infty e_{k,m}z^m$ is an entire function that can be written in the form $\prod_{p} \bigl(1+{(p-1)(z-1)}/{p^{k+1}} \bigr)$; from this representation we show how to both numerically calculate the $e_{k,m}$ to high precision and provide an asymptotic upper bound for the $e_{k,m}$. We further show how to generalize these results to all additive functions of the form $\sum_{j=2}^\infty a_j \omega_j(n)$; when $a_j=j-1$ this recovers a classical result of Rényi on the distribution of $\Omega(n)-\omega(n)$.

Abstract:We survey the potential for progress in additive number theory arising from recent advances concerning major arc bounds associated with mean value estimates for smooth Weyl sums. We focus attention on the problem of representing large positive integers as sums of a square and a number of $k$-th powers. We show that such representations exist when the number of $k$-th powers is at least $\lfloor c_0k\rfloor +2$, where $c_0=2.136294\ldots $. By developing an abstract framework capable of handling sequences with appropriate distribution properties, analogous conclusions are obtained, for example, when the square is restricted to have prime argument.

Abstract:Let $A=(a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_n)$ be a sequence of relative prime integers, each greater than or equal to 2. The Frobenius number $g(A)$ represents the largest integer that cannot be expressed as a nonnegative linear combination of the elements in $A$. Our recent work has introduced a combinatorial method for calculating $g(A)$ in the specific form $A=(a, a+B)=(a, a+b_1, \ldots, a+b_k)$. This method reduces the problem to a simpler optimization problem, denoted as $O_B(M)$. In this paper, we apply this method to solve the open problem of characterizing $g(A)$ for the square sequence $A=(a,a+1,a+2^2,\ldots, a+k^2)$. We demonstrate that the Frobenius number $g(a, a+1^2, a+2^2, \ldots)$ for the infinite square sequence admits a simpler solution. This is because the corresponding optimization problem, $O_B(M)$, can be solved by applying number-theoretic principles, specifically Lagrange's Four-Square Theorem and related results. Consequently, we are able to resolve the open problem by utilizing Lagrange's Four-Square Theorem in conjunction with generating functions.

Abstract:Let $P^-(n)$ denote the smallest prime factor of a natural integer $n>1$. Furthermore let $\mu$ and $\omega$ denote respectively the Möbius function and the number of distinct prime factors function. We show that, given any set ${\scr P}$ of prime numbers with a natural density, we have $\sum_{P^-(n)\in \scr P}\mu(n)\omega(n)/n=0$ and provide a effective estimate for the rate of convergence. This extends a recent result of Alladi and Johnson, who considered the case when ${\scr P}$ is an arithmetic progression.

Abstract:We establish quantitative lower bounds for the number of primes $p$ such that, for an odd integer $b$, $p - b \leq N$ and $p - b = 2^{k(N) + m} P_k \quad \text{for some } m \geq 0$, where $P_k$ is a product of at most $k$ primes other than 2, for $k \geq 2$. These results hold under various upper bounds for $2^{k(N)}$ depending on $k $, specifically when $2^{k(N)} \leq N^a$ for different values of $a$. Our approach combines techniques from Chen's theorem, weighted sieves, and Selberg's lower bound sieve, as well as results on primes in arithmetic progressions with large power factor moduli.

Abstract:It is a classic result of Selberg in the 1950's that $\theta_2 = 2/3$, where $\theta_2$ is the level of distribution of the divisor function in arithmetic progressions (defined more precisely below). Selberg applies this estimate, together with his $\Lambda^2$ sieve, to prove weak forms of the binary Goldbach and twin prime conjectures. In this note, we give an unconditional proof of Selberg's first result with smooth weights for prime moduli, and put forth a hypothesis via subconvexity to bootstrap to level $4/5$. Contingent outcomes of our proposal is an improvement of Selberg's second result on approximations to twin primes and in lowering bounds on gaps between primes.

Abstract:A classical problem in analytic number theory is to study the distribution of fractional part $\alpha p^k+\beta,\,k\ge 1$ modulo 1, where $\alpha$ is irrational and $p$ runs over the set of primes. For $k=2$ we consider the subsequence generated by the primes $p$ such that $p+2$ is an almost-prime (the existence of infinitely many such $p$ is another topical result in prime number theory) and prove that its distribution has a similar property.

Abstract:Using methods from analytic number theory, for $m > 5$ and for $m = 4$, we obtain asymptotics with power-saving error terms for counts of elliptic curves with a cyclic $m$-isogeny up to quadratic twist over the rational numbers. For $m > 5$, we then apply a Tauberian theorem to achieve asymptotics with power saving error for counts of elliptic curves with a cyclic $m$-isogeny up to isomorphism over the rational numbers.

Abstract:We prove quantitative estimates for averages of the von Mangoldt and Möbius functions along polynomial progressions $n+P_1(m),\ldots, n+P_k(m)$ for a large class of polynomials $P_i$. The error terms obtained save an arbitrary power of logarithm, matching the classical Siegel--Walfisz error term. These results give the first quantitative bounds for the Tao--Ziegler polynomial patterns in the primes result. The proofs are based on a quantitative generalised von Neumann theorem of Peluse, a recent result of Leng on strong bounds for the Gowers uniformity of the primes, and analysis of a ``Siegel model'' for the von Mangoldt function along polynomial progressions.

On the Sum of Squarefree Integers and a Power of Two

Abstract:Erdos conjectured that every odd number greater than one can be expressed as the sum of a squarefree number and a power of two. Subsequently, Odlyzko and McCranie provided numerical verification of this conjecture up to $10^7$ and $1.4\cdot 10^9$. In this paper, we extend the verification to all odd integers up to $2^{50}$, thereby improving the previous bound by a factor of more than $8\cdot 10^5$. Our approach employs a highly parallelized algorithm implemented on a GPU, which significantly accelerates the process. We provide details of the algorithm and present novel heuristic computations and numerical findings, including the smallest odd numbers $<2^{50}$ that require a higher power of two as all smaller ones in their representation.
