Abstract:Following a suggestion in a footnote of the paper \cite {Fa} by Fano, we give a direct proof of the fact that one of the two Fano threefolds of maximal degree 72 in $\p^{38}$ is isomorphic to the anticanonically embedded weighted projective space $\p(1,1,4,6)$.

Abstract:A famous theorem of Shokurov states that a general anticanonical divisor of a smooth Fano threefold is a smooth K3 surface. This is quite surprising since there are several examples where the base locus of the anticanonical system has codimension two. In this paper we show that for four-dimensional Fano manifolds the behaviour is completely opposite: if the base locus is a normal surface, hence has codimension two, all the anticanonical divisors are singular.

Abstract:In this paper I study the rationality problem for Fano threefolds $X\subset \p^{p+1}$ of genus $p$, that are Gorenstein, with at most canonical singularities. The main results are: (1) a trigonal Fano threefold of genus $p$ is rational as soon as $p\geq 8$ (this result has already been obtained in \cite {PCS}, but we give here an independent proof); (2) a non--trigonal Fano threefold of genus $p\geq 7$ containing a plane is rational; (3) any Fano threefold of genus $p\geq 17$ is rational; (4) a Fano threefold of genus $p\geq 12$ containing an ordinary line $\ell$ in its smooth locus is rational.

Abstract:We analyse the local structure of the K-moduli space of Fano varieties at a toric singular K-polystable Fano 3-fold, which deforms to smooth Fano 3-folds with anticanonical volume 28 and Picard rank 4. In particular, by constructing an algebraic deformation of this toric singular Fano, we show that the irreducible component of K-moduli parametrising these smooth Fano 3-folds is a rational surface.

Abstract:We give four examples of pairs of (conjecturally irrational) cubic fourfolds with birationally equivalent (and in some cases isomorphic) Fano varieties of lines. Two of our examples, which are special families in $C_{12}$, provide new examples of Fourier-Mukai partners which we show are birationally equivalent. We discuss and present examples explaining how various types of equivalence for cubic fourfolds are related.

Abstract:We propose conjectural semiorthogonal decompositions for Fano schemes of linear subspaces on intersections of two quadrics, in terms of symmetric powers of the associated hyperelliptic (resp. stacky) curve. When the intersection is odd-dimensional, we moreover conjecture an identity in the Grothendieck ring of varieties and other motivic contexts. The evidence for these conjectures is given by upgrading recent results of Chen-Vilonen-Xue, to obtain formulae for the Hodge numbers of these Fano schemes. This allows us to numerically verify the conjecture in the hyperelliptic case, and establish a combinatorial identity as evidence for the stacky case.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the explicit geometry of threefolds, in particular, Fano varieties. We find an explicitly computable positive integer $N$, such that all but a bounded family of Fano threefolds have $N$-complements. This result has many applications on finding explicit bounds of algebraic invariants for threefolds. We provide explicit lower bounds for the first gap of the $\mathbb R$-complementary thresholds for threefolds, the first gap of the global lc thresholds, the smallest minimal log discrepancy of exceptional threefolds, and the volume of log threefolds with reduced boundary and ample log canonical divisor. We also provide an explicit upper bound of the anti-canonical volume of exceptional threefolds. While the bounds in this paper may not and are not expected to be optimal, they are the first explicit bounds of these invariants in dimension three.

Abstract:Let $B$ be a smooth projective curve and let $\pi: \mathcal{X} \to B$ be a smooth integral model of a geometrically integral Fano variety over $K(B)$. Geometric Manin's Conjecture predicts the structure of the irreducible components $M \subset \textrm{Sec}(\mathcal{X}/B)$ which parametrize non-relatively free sections of sufficiently large anticanonical degree. Over the complex numbers, we prove that for any such component $M$ the sections come from morphisms $f: \mathcal{Y} \to \mathcal{X}$ such that the generic fiber of $\mathcal{Y}$ has Fujita invariant $\geq 1$. Furthermore, we prove that there is a bounded family of morphisms $f$ which together account for all such components $M$. These results verify the first part of Batyrev's heuristics for Geometric Manin's Conjecture over $\mathbb{C}$. Our result has ramifications for Manin's Conjecture over global function fields: if we start with a Fano fibration over a number field and reduce mod $p$, we obtain upper bounds of the desired form by first letting the prime go to infinity, then the height.

Abstract:We classify families of free rational curves on all smooth Fano threefolds over the complex numbers. In particular, we prove the family of very free rational curves representing any fixed numerical curve class is either irreducible or empty. This proves Geometric Manin's Conjecture in dimension three. For general Fano threefolds of each deformation type, our results allow us to explicitly count the number of components of the moduli space of irreducible, geometrically rational curves, which may not be free, representing any numerical class.

Abstract:In the previous papers [Tak8,Tak6], we construct the affine varieties $\Sigma_{\mathbb{A}}^{13}$ and $\Pi_{\mathbb{A}}^{14}$ whose partial projectivizations have $\mathbb{P}^{2}\times\mathbb{P}^{2}$-fibrations. In this paper, we produce prime $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano 3-folds of anticanonical codimension 4 belonging to 23 (resp. 8) classes of Graded Ring Database [GRDB] as weighted complete intersections of weighted projectivizations of $\Sigma_{\mathbb{A}}^{13}$ (resp. $\Pi_{\mathbb{A}}^{14}$ or the cone over it). Together with the results of [CD] and [Tak5], prime $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano 3-folds of anticanonical codimension 4 are constructed for 141 classes among the 143 classes in [GRDB].

K-moduli of Fano threefolds and genus four curves

Abstract:In this article, we study the K-moduli space of Fano threefolds obtained by blowing up $\mathbb{P}^3$ along $(2,3)$-complete intersection curves. This K-moduli space is a two-step birational modification of the GIT moduli space of $(3,3)$-curves on $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$. As an application, we show that our K-moduli space appears as one model of the Hassett--Keel program for $\overline{M}_4$. In particular, we classify all K-(semi/poly)stable members in this deformation family of Fano varieties. We follow the moduli continuity method with moduli of lattice-polarized K3 surfaces, general elephants and Sarkisov links as new ingredients.

Abstract:In a number of papers by Edge, and in a related paper by Fano, several properties are discussed of the family of scrolls of degree 8, in the complex projective space, whose plane sections are projected bicanonical models of a genus 3 curve C. This beautiful subject is implicitely related to the moduli of semistable rank two vector bundles on C with bicanonical determinant. We revisit and reconstruct this matter in modern terms with a modular point of view. This paper is the refereed version of a contribution to a volume in honor of W.L Edge, to be published by European Journal of Mathematics.
