The hydrodynamic equations in this metric are written out. Exact analytical solutions are presented. Generalization to the case of a toroidal magnetic field is carried out.

Abstract:A relativistic model of geometrically thin and optically thick accretion disks is worked out for a class of magnetically charged black holes, which are solutions to the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with a dilaton-coupled Euler-Heisenberg correction. Constraints on black hole parameters are derived from subextremality condition and energy conditions. The Keplerian orbits, the time-averaged energy flux, the local temperature, the specific luminosity and the conversion efficiency of accreting mass into radiation are obtained and compared with Schwarzschild and Gibbons-Maeda-Garfinkle-Horowitz-Strominger black holes.

Simulations of Magnetized Disks Around Black Holes: Effects of Black Hole Spin, Disk Thickness, and Magnetic Field Geometry

Abstract:The standard general relativistic model of a razor-thin accretion disk around a black hole, developed by Novikov & Thorne (NT) in 1973, assumes the shear stress vanishes at the radius of the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) and that, outside the ISCO, the shear stress is produced by an effective turbulent viscosity. However, astrophysical accretion disks are not razor-thin, it is uncertain whether the shear stress necessarily vanishes at the ISCO, and the magnetic field, which is thought to drive turbulence in disks, may contain large-scale structures that do not behave like a simple local scalar viscosity. We describe three-dimensional general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of accretion disks around black holes with a range of spin parameters, and we use the simulations to assess the validity of the NT model. Our fiducial initial magnetic field consists of multiple (alternating polarity) poloidal field loops whose shape is roughly isotropic in the disk in order to match the isotropic turbulence expected in the poloidal plane. For a thin disk with an aspect ratio |h/r| ~ 0.07 around a non-spinning black hole, we find a decrease in the accreted specific angular momentum of 2.9% relative to the NT model and an excess luminosity from inside the ISCO of 3.5%. The deviations in the case of spinning black holes are of the same order. In addition, the deviations decrease with decreasing |h/r|. We therefore conclude that magnetized thin accretion disks in x-ray binaries in the thermal/high-soft spectral state ought to be well-described by the NT model, especially at luminosities below 30% of Eddington where we expect a very small disk thickness |h/r| <~ 0.05. We also discuss how the stress and the luminosity inside the ISCO depend on the assumed initial magnetic field geometry. (abridged)

Abstract:In the present study, we probe the geodesic motion and accretion of particles around the spherically symmetric Dyonic ModMax black hole using isothermal fluid. The geodesic motion of the particles around the black hole leads to the formation of disk like structure during the accretion process. We compute the radiant temperature, radioactive efficiency, radiant flux energy, circular orbits and observe the behavior of particles within stable circular orbits in the equatorial plane. We examine how the particles are perturbed during the process by using restoring forces and the oscillatory behavior of the particles surrounding a compact object and also investigate the fluid's critical flow and maximum accretion rate. Our findings demonstrate how the black hole parameter and charge Q affect the circular geodesic of particles as well as the maximum accretion rate of the Dyonic ModMax black hole.

Abstract:International Journal of Geometric Methods in Modern Physics, Ahead of Print. Regular black holes are crucially important as approaches to solving the singularity problem, and in this paper, the accretion disk of Bardeen and Hayward models has been studied. For this purpose, we calculated the physical properties of black holes, including radiant energy, luminosity derivative, temperature, and conversion efficiency of accretion mass into radiation. The obtained results show that the nonzero-free parameters of regular black holes cause the radius of the innermost stable circular orbit of the disk to shift to smaller values. As a result of this displacement, we saw an increase in the profiles of radiant energy, luminosity derivative, and temperature. We also find that Bardeen and Hayward's black holes are more efficient in converting mass to radiation than Schwarzschild. Finally, we compared the free parameter of these two black holes with the spin of the rotating black hole and found that the Bardeen and Hayward black holes can mimic the slowly rotating Kerr black hole.

Abstract:Analytical models of magnetized, geometrically thick disks are relevant to understand the physical conditions of plasma around compact objects and to explore its emitting properties. This has become increasingly important in recent years in the light of the Event Horizon Telescope observations of Sgr A$^*$ and M87. Models of thick disks around black holes usually consider constant angular momentum distributions and do not take into account the magnetic response of the fluid to applied magnetic fields. We present a generalization of our previous work on stationary models of magnetized accretion disks with magnetic polarization (Pimentel et al. 2018). This extension is achieved by accounting for non-constant specific angular momentum profiles, done through a two-parameter ansatz for those distributions. We build a large number of new equilibrium solutions of thick disks with magnetic polarization around Kerr black holes, selecting suitable parameter values within the intrinsically substantial parameter space of the models. We study the morphology and the physical properties of those solutions, finding qualitative changes with respect to the constant angular momentum tori solutions (Pimentel et al. 2018). However, the dependences found on the angular momentum distribution or on the black hole spin do not seem to be strong. Some of the new solutions, however, exhibit a local maximum of the magnetization function, absent in standard magnetized tori. Due to the enhanced development of the magneto-rotational instability as a result of magnetic susceptibility, those models might be particularly well-suited to investigate jet formation through general-relativistic MHD simulations. The new equilibrium solutions reported here can be used as initial data in numerical codes to assess the impact of magnetic susceptibility in the dynamics and observational properties of black hole-thick disk systems.

Abstract:The present work presents analytically constructed equilibrium structures of charged perfect fluids orbiting Kerr Black holes embedded in an asymptotically uniform magnetic field. Our focus is on the effect of the non-constant angular momentum distribution through the disk, as well as its combined effect with the external magnetic field and the fluid charge. We demonstrate that the three parameters of our study have a significant impact on the various features of the accretion disk: the shape, the size of the disk and the characteristic of the fluid, as the pressure and the rest-mass density. Through our investigation, we observe substantial deviations from both the uncharged thick disk model and the charged disk model with constant angular momentum.

Abstract:(Abridged) To gain insight into the dynamical influence of a supermassive black hole binary on a circumbinary accretion disk, we investigate the binary and viscous torque densities throughout such a disk, with emphasis on the final density distribution, particularly the size and stability of the central gap between the binary and the inner edge of the disk. We limit ourselves to the simplified case of a massless viscous thin accretion disk under the influence of the gravitational potential from a binary system whose orbital plane is inclined relative to the disk. The orbital plane could be inclined if it is not coeval with the disk, or the black holes have spin angular momentum misaligned with respect to the disk's orbital angular momentum, so that the binary can precess to an inclined orientation. We employ 2D Newtonian hydrodynamics simulations to examine the influence of two model parameters: the mass ratio of the binary and the inclination angle between the binary and the disk. We investigate their impact on the density and torque distribution. In our analytical approach, we consider the stability of epicycles induced by the perturbative effect of the asymmetric inclined binary gravitational potential on Keplerian circular orbits. Through our simulations, we observe that certain configurations never attain a quasi-steady state, where the density profile averaged over many orbits stabilizes. This instability occurs when the inclination is close to 45 degrees. Furthermore, we identify configurations where there is never a persistent balance between the dynamical and viscous torque densities, as well as cases where the location of this balance oscillates or exhibits other time-dependent behavior over viscous timescales. These findings have implications for understanding both the expected gravitational-wave signal and electromagnetic counterparts from supermassive black hole binaries.

Abstract:In this study, we develop a simplified magnetofluid model in the framework of GRMHD. We consider an ideal, adiabatic fluid composed of two components, ions and electrons, having a constant ratio between their temperatures. The flows are assumed to be governed by gravity, enabling us to employ the ballistic approximation, treating the streamlines as timelike geodesics. We show that the model is analytically solvable around a rotating black hole if the angular velocity of the geodesic u θ is vanishing. In the corresponding solution, which is named the conical solution, we derive a comprehensive set of explicit expressions for the thermodynamics and the associated magnetic field. Furthermore, we explore the potential applications of our model to describe the thick disks and the jets at the horizon scale. Our model provides a direct pathway for the study of black hole imaging.

Black Hole Accretion with Saturated Magnetic Pressure and Disk Wind

Abstract:We construct an analytical black hole accretion disk model that incorporates both magnetic pressure and disk wind, which are found to be important from numerical simulations. A saturated magnetic pressure that relates the Alfven velocity with local Keplerian velocity and gas sound speed is assumed in addition to radiation and gas pressures. The mass accretion rate is assumed to have a power-law form in response to mass loss in the wind. We find three sets of self-consistent solutions that are thermally stable and satisfy the model assumptions. At high accretion rates, the disk is geometrically and optically thick, resembling the slim disk solution. At relatively low accretion rates, our model predicts an accretion flow consisting of a geometrically thin and optically thick outer disk (similar to the standard disk), and a geometrically thick and optically thin inner disk (similar to the advection-dominated accretion flow or ADAF). Thus, this is a natural solution for a truncated disk connected with an inner ADAF, which has been proposed to explain some observations. The magnetic pressure plays a more important role than the outflow in shaping the disk structure. The observed disk luminosity tends to saturate around 8 times the Eddington limit, suggesting that supercritical accretion onto black holes can be used for black hole mass estimate, or a standard candle with known black hole masses.

Abstract:In this thesis, I study hydrodynamical models of slim accretion disks --- advective, optically thick disks which generalize the standard models of radiatively efficient thin disks to all accretion rates. I start with a general introduction to the theory of accretion onto compact objects. It is followed by a derivation of the commonly-used standard models of thin disks. In the subsequent section I introduce the equations describing slim disks, explain the numerical methods I used to solve them and discuss properties of such solutions. I also give a general derivation of non-stationary equations and present the time evolution of thermally unstable accretion disks. I introduce a state-of-the-art approach coupling the radial and vertical structures of an advective accretion disk and discuss the improvements it brings to vertically-averaged solutions. I also present a numerical model of self-illuminated slim accretion disks. Finally, I present and discuss applications of slim accretion disks: estimating of spin of the central black hole in LMC X-3 through X-ray continuum fitting basing on high-luminosity data, spinning-up of black holes by super-critical accretion flows and normalizing of magnetohydrodynamical global simulations.

Black Hole Magnetospheres Around Thin Disks Driving Inward and Outward Winds

Abstract:We construct a simple model for stationary, axisymmetric black-hole magnetospheres, in which the poloidal magnetic field is generated by a toroidal electric current in a thin disk with the inner edge, by solving the vacuum Maxwell equations in Schwarzschild background. In this work, to obtain a concise analytical form of the magnetic stream function, we use the approximation that the inner edge is far distant from the event horizon. The global magnetospheric structure with the closed-loop and open field lines threading the inner and outer parts of the disk is explicitly shown, claiming that the model is useful as a starting point to study astrophysical problems involving inward disk-driven winds to a black hole and outward ones to infinity. The asymptotic shape of the field lines at the event horizon becomes nearly cylindrical, while at infinity it becomes conical. The magnetic spot in the disk connected with the black hole through the loop field lines occupies a very narrow region with the ring area roughly equal to the horizon area. By taking account of the existence of a uniform (external) magnetic field, we also obtain the model for collimated open field lines. Then, it is found that the magnetic connection between the black hole and the disk breaks down if the uniform field is strong enough. Considering slow rotation of the magnetosphere and angular momentum transfer by inward winds from the disk, the final discussion is devoted to gradual disruption of the closed loops due to radial accretion of disk plasma toward the black hole.

Hydrodynamic Simulation of Two Component Advective Flows around Black Holes

Abstract:We carry out a series of numerical simulations of viscous accretion flows having a reasonable spatial distribution of the viscosity parameter. We add the power-law cooling throughout the flow. We show that, in agreement with the theoretical solutions of viscous transonic flows, matter having the viscosity parameter above a critical value becomes a Keplerian disk while matter having lesser viscosity remains a low angular momentum, sub-Keplerian flow. The latter component produces centrifugal pressure supported shock waves. Thus, for instance, a flow having sufficiently high viscosity on the equatorial plane and low viscosity above and below, would produce a Two Component Advective Flow (TCAF) where a Keplerian disk is surrounded by a rapidly infalling sub-Keplerian halo. We find that the post- shock region of the relatively cooler Keplerian disk is evaporated and the overall configuration is quite stable. This agrees with the theoretical model with two components which attempt to explain the spectral and timing properties of black hole candidates.

Geometrically Thick Disks around Kerr Black Holes in a Swirling Universe

Abstract:We investigate geometrically thick disks around Kerr black holes in a swirling universe. This stationary and axisymmetric spacetime is composed of a Kerr black hole, which is immersed in a swirling background. The swirling background is characterized by an odd $\mathcal{Z}_2$ symmetry, where the northern and southern hemispheres are rotating in opposite directions. The Kerr and swirling rotations can lead to the emergence of complex spin-spin interactions, which heavily influence the spacetime properties. In order to study this influence, we analyze prograde as well as retrograde circular orbits and geometrically thick disks for different spacetime solutions, which are classified by their Kerr parameter $a$ and the swirling parameter $j$. We find stabilizing effects on prograde circular orbits and destabilizing effects on retrograde circular orbits, which originate from the spin-spin interaction and depend mainly on the Kerr rotation. Furthermore, the background rotation leads to an emergence of static orbits and the symmetry breaking regarding the equatorial plane causes a vertical distribution of the circular orbits and thick torus solutions. Due to the destabilizing effect of the swirling rotation, an outer marginally stable orbit appears, which heavily downsizes the parameter space for disk solutions. Dependent on the Keplerian specific angular momentum distribution of the spacetime and on the disk momentum $\ell_0$, different types of disk are possible which we classify and which differ in terms of the complex disk dynamics that could arise due to the presence of an inner and outer cusp or just an outer cusp.

Abstract:In this paper, we study circular orbits, effective potential, and thin-accretion disk of a black hole in symmergent gravity within the Novikov-Thorne model in a way including the energy flux and temperature distribution. We determine bounds on symmergent gravity parameters and conclude that the accretion disk could be used as an astrophysical tool to probe symmergent gravity.

Abstract:In this paper we extend our previous works on spherically symmetric accretion onto black holes and superspinars to the case in which the fluid has a finite angular momentum initially. We run 2.5D and 3D general relativistic hydrodynamic simulations of the accretion of a fat disk. We study how the accretion process changes by changing the values of the parameters of our model. We show that the value of the fluid angular momentum critically determines turn-on and off the production of powerful equatorial outflows around superspinars. For corotating disks, equatorial outflows are efficiently generated, even for relatively low spin parameters or relatively large superspinar radii. For counterrotating disks, equatorial outflows are instead significantly suppressed, and they are possible only in limited cases. We also study accretion around a tilted disk.
