Abstract:We answer a question raised by Alam and Ghosh concerning an error term for a spiralling result in Diophantine approximation by rationals in a number field. The proof relies on a generalisation of Rogers' Mean Value Theorem to algebraic number fields and an effective ergodic theorem due to Gaposhkin.

Abstract:In this paper we present a new approach to prove effective results in Diophantine approximation. This approach involves measures of local positivity of divisors combined with Faltings's version of Siegel's lemma instead of a zero estimate such as Dyson's lemma. We then use it to prove an effective theorem on the simultaneous approximation of two algebraic numbers satisfying an algebraic equation with complex coefficients.

Mean value theorems for the S-arithmetic primitive Siegel transforms

Abstract:We develop the theory and properties of primitive unimodular $S$-arithmetic lattices in $\mathbb{Q}_S^d$ by giving integral formulas in the spirit of Siegel's primitive mean value formula and Rogers' and Schmidt's second moment formulas. We then use mean value and second moment formulas in three applications. First, we obtain quantitative estimates for counting primitive $S$-arithmetic lattice points which are used to count primitive integer vectors in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ with congruence conditions. These counting results use asymptotic information for the totient summatory function with added congruence conditions that are of independent interest. We next obtain two versions of a quantitative Khintchine-Groshev theorem: counting $\psi$-approximable elements over the primitive set $P(\mathbb{Z}_S^d)$ of $S$-integer vectors and over the primitive set $P(\mathbb{Z}^d)$ of integer vectors with additional congruence conditions. We conclude with an $S$-arithmetic version of logarithm laws for unipotent flows in the spirit of Athreya-Margulis.

Abstract:Matomäki proved that if $\alpha\in \mathbb{R}$ is irrational, then there are infinitely many primes $p$ such that $|\alpha-a/p|\le p^{-4/3+\varepsilon}$ for a suitable integer a. In this paper, we extend this result to all quadratic number fields under the condition that the Grand Riemann Hypothesis holds for their Hecke $L$-functions.

Abstract:Recently, Seungki Kim proved an extension of Rogers' mean value formula to the adeles of an arbitrary number field. In this paper we give a new proof Kim's formula, and give a criterion ensuring convergence in this formula. We also discuss one application, namely diophantine approximation over imaginary quadratic number fields with congruence conditions, where we prove an analogue of a famous counting result of W. M. Schimdt.

Abstract:We extend the parametric geometry of numbers (initiated by Schmidt and Summerer, and deepened by Roy) to Diophantine approximation for systems of $m$ linear forms in $n$ variables, and establish a new connection to the metric theory via a variational principle that computes fractal dimensions of a variety of sets of number-theoretic interest. The proof relies on two novel ingredients: a variant of Schmidt's game capable of computing the Hausdorff and packing dimensions of any set, and the notion of templates, which generalize Roy's rigid systems. In particular, we compute the Hausdorff and packing dimensions of the set of singular systems of linear forms and show they are equal, resolving a conjecture of Kadyrov, Kleinbock, Lindenstrauss and Margulis, as well as a question of Bugeaud, Cheung and Chevallier. As a corollary of Dani's correspondence principle, the divergent trajectories of a one-parameter diagonal action on the space of unimodular lattices with exactly two Lyapunov exponents with opposite signs has equal Hausdorff and packing dimensions. Other applications include quantitative strengthenings of theorems due to Cheung and Moshchevitin, which originally resolved conjectures due to Starkov and Schmidt respectively; as well as dimension formulas with respect to the uniform exponent of irrationality for simultaneous and dual approximation in two dimensions, completing partial results due to Baker, Bugeaud, Cheung, Chevallier, Dodson, Laurent and Rynne.

Lattices in function fields and applications

Abstract:In recent decades, the use of ideas from Minkowski's Geometry of Numbers has gained recognition as a helpful tool in bounding the number of solutions to modular congruences with variables from short intervals. In 1941, Mahler introduced an analogue to the Geometry of Numbers in function fields over finite fields. Here, we build on Mahler's ideas and develop results useful for bounding the sizes of intersections of lattices and convex bodies in $\mathbb{F}_q((1/T))^d$, which are more precise than what is known over $\mathbb{R}^d$. These results are then applied to various problems regarding bounding the number of solutions to congruences in $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$, such as the number of points on polynomial curves in low dimensional subspaces of finite fields. Our results improve on a number of previous bounds due to Bagshaw, Cilleruelo, Shparlinski and Zumalacárregui. We also present previous techniques developed by various authors for estimating certain energy/point counts in a unified manner.

A Quadratic Vinogradov Mean Value Theorem in Finite Fields

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime, let $s \geq 3$ be a natural number and let $A \subseteq \mathbb{F}_p$ be a non-empty set satisfying $|A| \ll p^{1/2}$. Denoting $J_s(A)$ to be the number of solutions to the system of equations \[ \sum_{i=1}^{s} (x_i - x_{i+s}) = \sum_{i=1}^{s} (x_i^2 - x_{i+s}^2) = 0, \] with $x_1, \dots, x_{2s} \in A$, our main result implies that \[ J_s(A) \ll |A|^{2s - 2 - 1/9}. \] This can be seen as a finite field analogue of the quadratic Vinogradov mean value theorem. Our techniques involve a variety of combinatorial geometric estimates, including studying incidences between cartesian products $A\times A$ and a special family of modular hyperbolae.

Geometric and arithmetic aspects of approximation vectors

Abstract:Let $\theta\in\mathbb{R}^d$. We associate three objects to each approximation $(p,q)\in \mathbb{Z}^d\times \mathbb{N}$ of $\theta$: the projection of the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^{d+1}$ to the hyperplane of the first $d$ coordinates along the approximating vector $(p,q)$; the displacement vector $(p - q\theta)$; and the residue classes of the components of the $(d + 1)$-tuple $(p, q)$ modulo all primes. All of these have been studied in connection with Diophantine approximation problems. We consider the asymptotic distribution of all of these quantities, properly rescaled, as $(p, q)$ ranges over the best approximants and $\epsilon$-approximants of $\theta$, and describe limiting measures on the relevant spaces, which hold for Lebesgue a.e. $\theta$. We also consider a similar problem for vectors $\theta$ whose components, together with 1, span a totally real number field of degree $d+1$. Our technique involve recasting the problem as an equidistribution problem for a cross-section of a one-parameter flow on an adelic space, which is a fibration over the space of $(d + 1)$-dimensional lattices. Our results generalize results of many previous authors, to higher dimensions and to joint equidistribution.

Diophantine Approximation in local function fields via Bruhat-Tit trees

Abstract:We use the theory of arithmetic quotients of the Bruhat-Tits tree developed by Serre and others to obtain Dirichlet-style theorems for Diophantine approximation on global function fields. This approach allows us to find sharp values for the constants involved and, occasionally, explicit examples of badly approximable quadratic irrationals. Additionally, we can use this method to easily compute the measure of the set of elements that can be written as the limit of a sequence of ``better than expected'' approximants. All these results can be easily obtained via continued fractions when they are available, so that quotient graphs can be seen as a partial replacement of them when this fails to be the case.

Effective Results in The Metric Theory of Quantitative Diophantine Approximation

Abstract:Many results related to quantitative problems in the metric theory of Diophantine approximation are asymptotic, such as the number of rational solutions to certain inequalities grows with the same rate almost everywhere modulo an asymptotic error term. The error term incorporates an implicit constant that varies from one point to another. This means that applications of these results does not give concrete bounds when applied to, say a finite sum, or when applied to counting the number of solutions up to a finite point for a given inequality. This paper addresses this problem and makes the tools and their results effective, by making the implicit constant explicit outside of an exceptional subset of Lebesgue measure at most $\delta>0$, an arbitrarily small constant chosen in advance. We deduce from this the fully effective results for Schmidt's Theorem, quantitative Koukoulopoulos-Maynard Theorem and quantitative results on $M_{0}$-sets; we also provide effective results regarding statistics of normal numbers and strong law of large numbers.

Mean Value for Random Ideal Lattices

Abstract:We investigate the average number of lattice points within a ball for the $n$th cyclotomic number field, where the lattice is chosen at random from the set of unit determinant ideal lattices of the field. We show that this average is nearly identical to the average number of lattice points in a ball among all unit determinant random lattices of the same dimension. To establish this result, we apply the Hecke integration formula and subconvexity bounds on Dedekind zeta functions of cyclotomic fields. The symmetries arising from the roots of unity in an ideal lattice allow us to improve a lattice packing bound by Venkatesh, achieving an enhancement by a factor of 2.

Abstract:A symmetrized lattice of $2n$ points in terms of an irrational real number $\alpha$ is considered in the unit square, as in the theorem of Davenport. If $\alpha$ is a quadratic irrational, the square of the $L^2$ discrepancy is found to be $c( \alpha ) \log n + O \left( \log \log n \right)$ for a computable positive constant $c( \alpha )$. For the golden ratio $\varphi$, the value $\sqrt{c (\varphi ) \log n}$ yields the smallest $L^2$ discrepancy of any sequence of explicitly constructed finite point sets in the unit square. If the partial quotients $a_k$ of $\alpha$ grow at most polynomially fast, the $L^2$ discrepancy is found in terms of $a_k$ up to an explicitly bounded error term. It is also shown that certain generalized Dedekind sums can be approximated using the same methods. For a special generalized Dedekind sum with arguments $a, b$ an asymptotic formula in terms of the partial quotients of $\frac{a}{b}$ is proved.

Abstract:We prove higher moment formulas for Siegel transforms defined over the space of unimodular S-lattices in Q S d , d ≥ 3 , where in the real case, the formulas are introduced by Rogers [20]. As applications, we obtain the random statements of Gauss circle problem for any star-shaped sets in Q S d centered at the origin and of the effective Oppenheim conjecture for S-arithmetic quadratic forms.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a multi-quadratic totally real number field. Let $\sigma_1,\dots, \sigma_r$ denote its distinct embeddings. Given $s \in F,$ we give an explicit formula for $\| \sigma(s)\|$ and $\sum_{i<j} \sigma_i(s)\sigma_j(s),$ where $\| \sigma(s)\|=\sqrt{\sum_{i=1}^r(\sigma_i(s))^2}.$ Let $\mathfrak{M}$ be a fractional ideal in $F$ and $\min\left( \mathfrak{M}\right):=\min\{\|\sigma(s)\| \, | \, s \in \mathfrak{M}, s\neq 0 \}.$ The set of shortest nonzero lattice points for $\mathfrak{M}$ is given by $\{s\in \mathfrak{M} : \| \sigma(s)\|=\min(\mathfrak{M}) \}.$ We provide shortest nonzero lattice points for $\mathfrak{M}$ in terms of rational solutions to a given Diophantine equation. As an application, we get a refined asymptotic for the Petersson trace formula for the space of Hilbert cusp forms. We then use the refined asymptotic to obtain a lower bound analogue to a theorem by Jung and Sardari.

A New Diophantine Approximation Inequality on Surfaces and Its Applications

Abstract:We prove a Diophantine approximation inequality for closed subschemes on surfaces which can be viewed as a joint generalization of recent inequalities of Ru-Vojta and Heier-Levin in this context. As applications, we study various Diophantine problems on affine surfaces given as the complement of three numerically parallel ample projective curves: inequalities involving greatest common divisors, degeneracy of integral points, and related Diophantine equations including families of S-unit equations. We state analogous results in the complex analytic setting, where our main result is an inequality of Second Main Theorem type for surfaces, with applications to the study and value distribution theory of holomorphic curves in surfaces.

Power Savings for Counting (Twisted) Abelian Extensions of Number Fields

Abstract:We prove significant power savings for the error term when counting abelian extensions of number fields (as well as the twisted version of these results for nontrivial Galois modules). In some cases over $\mathbb{Q}$, these results reveal lower order terms following the same structure as the main term that were not previously known. Assuming the generalized Lindelöf hypothesis for Hecke $L$-functions, we prove square root power savings for the error compared to the order of the main term.
