Abstract:Higher-order Weyl semimetals are a family of recently predicted topological phases simultaneously showcasing unconventional properties derived from Weyl points, such as chiral anomaly, and multidimensional topological phenomena originating from higher-order topology. The higher-order Weyl semimetal phases, with their higher-order topology arising from quantized dipole or quadrupole bulk polarizations, have been demonstrated in phononics and circuits. Here, we experimentally discover a class of higher-order Weyl semimetal phase in a three-dimensional photonic crystal (PhC), exhibiting the concurrence of the surface and hinge Fermi arcs from the nonzero Chern number and the nontrivial generalized real Chern number, respectively, coined a real higher-order Weyl PhC. Notably, the projected two-dimensional subsystem with kz = 0 is a real Chern insulator, belonging to the Stiefel-Whitney class with real Bloch wavefunctions, which is distinguished fundamentally from the Chern class with complex Bloch wavefunctions. Our work offers an ideal photonic platform for exploring potential applications and material properties associated with the higher-order Weyl points and the Stiefel-Whitney class of topological phases.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore and realize a new type of three - dimensional photonic crystal (3D PhC), which can exhibit the high - order Weyl semimetal phase and possess Fermi arcs on both the surface and the edge simultaneously. Specifically, the researchers aim to experimentally discover a new class of high - order Weyl photonic crystals. These crystals can not only show the surface Fermi arcs caused by non - zero Chern numbers, but also display the edge Fermi arcs caused by non - trivial generalized real Chern numbers. This discovery fills the gap of high - order Weyl semimetals in the field of photonics and provides an ideal photonic platform for exploring the strange physical phenomena related to high - order Weyl points. The key points mentioned in the paper include: 1. **High - order Weyl semimetal phase**: The paper reports an experimentally discovered high - order Weyl photonic crystal. This crystal is different from the previously realized high - order topological Weyl semimetal phase, mainly in that it divides the 3D Brillouin zone (BZ) into Chern insulator phases and generalized real Chern insulator phases, rather than into Chern insulator phases and high - order topological phases with quadrupole or dipole body polarizations. 2. **Real Chern insulator**: In particular, when \(k_z = 0\), it can be regarded as a previously overlooked real Chern insulator, belonging to the Stiefel - Whitney class, with real Bloch wave functions, which is fundamentally different from the Chern class with complex Bloch wave functions. 3. **Symmetry - guided topological phase transition**: Through a symmetry - enforced topological phase transition process, a triple spin - 1 Weyl point splits into two real high - order Weyl points. The design principle of this process is symmetry - guided, which goes beyond the traditional lattice model. 4. **Experimental verification**: The paper experimentally verifies these theoretical predictions, including measuring the bulk band structure, surface Fermi arcs, and edge Fermi arcs of the photonic crystal. The experimental results are highly consistent with the simulation results. 5. **Application prospects**: These findings not only provide a new perspective for understanding high - order Weyl semimetals and Stiefel - Whitney - class topological phases, but also make it possible to manipulate multi - dimensional light flows on a single integrated 3D platform, including 2D surfaces and 1D edges, which is of great significance for the development of new photonic devices. Through these studies, the paper not only theoretically promotes the understanding of high - order Weyl semimetals, but also experimentally realizes the verification of this theory, laying the foundation for future photonics research and technological development.
