Abstract:We describe the action of the mod $2$ Steenrod algebra on the cohomology of various polyhedral products and related spaces. We carry this out for Davis-Januszkiewicz spaces and their generalizations, for moment-angle complexes as well as for certain polyhedral joins. By studying the combinatorics of underlying simplicial complexes, we deduce some consequences for the lowest cohomological dimension in which non-trivial Steenrod operations can appear. We present a version of cochain-level formulas for Steenrod operations on simplicial complexes. We explain the idea of "propagating" such formulas from a simplicial complex $K$ to polyhedral joins over $K$ and we give examples of this process. We tie the propagation of the Steenrod algebra actions on polyhedral joins to those on moment-angle complexes. Although these are cases where one can understand the Steenrod action via a stable homotopy decomposition, we anticipate applying this method to cases where there is no such decomposition.

Abstract:We generalize R. P. Stanley's celebrated theorem that the $h^\ast$-polynomial of the Ehrhart series of a rational polytope has nonnegative coefficients and is monotone under containment of polytopes. We show that these results continue to hold for weighted Ehrhart series where lattice points are counted with polynomial weights, as long as the weights are homogeneous polynomials decomposable as sums of products of linear forms that are nonnegative on the polytope. We also show nonnegativity of the $h^\ast$-polynomial as a real-valued function for a larger family of weights. We then target the case when the weight function is the square of a single (arbitrary) linear form. We show stronger results for two-dimensional convex lattice polygons and give concrete examples showing tightness of the hypotheses. As an application, we construct a counterexample to a conjecture by Berg, Jochemko, and Silverstein on Ehrhart tensor polynomials.

Abstract:We introduce polyhedral products in an $\infty$-categorical setting. We generalize a splitting result by Bahri, Bendersky, Cohen, and Gitler that determines the stable homotopy type of the a polyhedral product. We also introduce a motivic refinement of moment-angle complexes and use the splitting result to compute cellular $\mathbb{A}^1$-homology, and $\mathbb{A}^1$-Euler characteristics.

Abstract:In this paper, we compute the homology group and cohomology algebra of various polyhedral product objects uniformly from the point of view of diagonal tensor product. As applications, we introduce the polyhedral product method into commutative algebra and show that the homotopy types of polyhedral product spaces depend on not only the homotopy type of each summand pair but also on the character coproduct of the pair.

Abstract:Dualising the construction of a polyhedral product, we introduce the notion of a polyhedral coproduct as a certain homotopy limit over the face poset of a simplicial complex. We begin a study of the basic properties of polyhedral coproducts, surveying the Eckmann-Hilton duals of various familiar examples and properties of polyhedral products. In particular, we show that polyhedral coproducts give a functorial interpolation between the wedge and cartesian product of spaces which differs from the one given by polyhedral products, and we establish a general loop space decomposition for these spaces which is dual to the suspension splitting of a polyhedral product due to Bahri, Bendersky, Cohen and Gitler.

Abstract:Polyhedral products were defined by Bahri, Bendersky, Cohen and Gitler, to be spaces obtained as unions of certain product spaces indexed by the simplices of an abstract simplicial complex. In this paper we give a very general homotopy theoretic construction of polyhedral products over arbitrary pointed posets. We show that under certain restrictions on the poset $\calp$, that include all known cases, the cohomology of the resulting spaces can be computed as an inverse limit over $\calp$ of the cohomology of the building blocks. This motivates the definition of an analogous algebraic construction - the polyhedral tensor product. We show that for a large family of posets, the cohomology of the polyhedral product is given by the polyhedral tensor product. We then restrict attention to polyhedral posets, a family of posets that include face posets of simplicial complexes, and simplicial posets, as well as many others. We define the Stanley-Reisner ring of a polyhedral poset and show that, like in the classical cases, these rings occur as the cohomology of certain polyhedral products over the poset in question. For any pointed poset $\calp$ we construct a simplicial poset $s(\calp)$, and show that if $\calp$ is a polyhedral poset then polyhedral products over $\calp$ coincide up to homotopy with the corresponding polyhedral products over $s(\calp)$.

Weighted Ehrhart theory via mixed Hodge modules on toric varieties

Abstract:We give a cohomological and geometrical interpretation for the weighted Ehrhart theory of a full-dimensional lattice polytope $P$, with Laurent polynomial weights of geometric origin. For this purpose, we calculate the motivic Chern and Hirzebruch characteristic classes of a mixed Hodge module complex $\mathcal{M}$ whose underlying cohomology sheaves are constant on the $\mathbb{T}$-orbits of the toric variety $X_P$ associated to $P$. Besides motivic coefficients, this also applies to the intersection cohomology Hodge module. We introduce a corresponding generalized Hodge $\chi_y$-polynomial of the ample divisor $D_P$ on $X_P$. Motivic properties of these characteristic classes are used to express this Hodge polynomial in terms of a very general weighed lattice point counting and the corresponding weighted Ehrhart theory. We introduce, for such a mixed Hodge modules complex $\mathcal{M}$ on $X$, an Ehrhart polynomial $E_{P,\mathcal{M}}$ generalizing the Hodge polynomial of $\mathcal{M}$ and satisfying a reciprocity formula and a purity formula fitting with the duality for mixed Hodge modules. This Ehrhart polynomial and its properties depend only on a Laurent polynomial weight function on the faces $Q$ of $P$. In the special case of the intersection cohomology mixed Hodge module, the weight function corresponds to Stanley's $g$-function of the polar polytope of $P$, hence it depends only on the combinatorics of $P$. In particular, we obtain a combinatorial formula for the intersection cohomology signature.

Weighted Ehrhart theory via equivariant toric geometry

Abstract:We give a $K$-theoretic and geometric interpretation for a generalized weighted Ehrhart theory of a full-dimensional lattice polytope $P$, depending on a given homogeneous polynomial function $\varphi$ on $P$, and with Laurent polynomial weights $f_Q(y)\in \mathbb{Z}[y^{\pm 1}]$ associated to the faces $Q \preceq P$ of the polytope. For this purpose, we calculate equivariant $K$-theoretic Hodge-Chern classes of an equivariant mixed Hodge module $\mathcal{M}$ on the toric variety $X_P$ associated to $P$ (defined via an equivariant embedding of $X_P$ into an ambient smooth variety). For any integer $\ell$, we introduce a corresponding equivariant Hodge $\chi_y$-polynomial $\chi_y(X_P, \ell D_P; [\mathcal{M}])$, with $D_P$ the corresponding ample Cartier divisor on $X_P$ (defined by the facet presentation of $P$). Motivic properties of the Hodge-Chern classes are used to express this equivariant Hodge polynomial in terms of weighted character sums fitting with a generalized weighted Ehrhart theory. The equivariant Hodge polynomials are shown to satisfy a reciprocity and purity formula fitting with the duality for equivariant mixed Hodge modules, and implying the corresponding properties for the generalized weighted Ehrhart polynomials. In the special case of the equivariant intersection cohomology mixed Hodge module, with the weight function corresponding to Stanley's $g$-function of the polar polytope of $P$, we recover in geometric terms a recent combinatorial formula of Beck--Gunnells--Materov.

Delocalized equivariant coholomogy of symmetric products

Abstract:For any closed complex manifold $X$, we calculate the Poincar\'{e} and Hodge polynomials of the delocalized equivariant cohomology $H^*(X^n, S_n)$ with a grading specified by physicists. As a consequence, we recover a special case of a formula for the elliptic genera of symmetric products in Dijkgraaf-Moore-Verlinde-Verlinde \cite{Dij-Moo-Ver-Ver}. For a projective surface X, our results matches with the corresponding formulas for the Hilbert scheme of X^[n]. We also give geometric construction of an action of a Heisenberg superalgebra on $\sum_{n \geq 0} H^{*,*}(X^n, S_n)$, imitating the constructions for equivariant K-theory by Segal \cite{Seg} and Wang \cite{Wan}. There is a corresponding version for $H^{-*, *}$.
On the failure of the integral Hodge/Tate conjecture for products with projective hypersurfaces

Abstract:In this paper we show the failure of the integral Hodge/Tate conjecture for the product of an Enriques surface with a smooth odd-dimensional projective hypersurface. To do this, we use a specialization argument of Colliot-Thélène applied to Schreieder's refined unramified cohomology. The results obtained in this way give an interpretation of Shen's result in terms of refined unramified cohomology. Moreover, using this interpretation, we avoid the need to work over the complex numbers so that we may conclude that Shen's result also holds over general algebraically closed fields of characteristic not 2.

Abstract:Based on a relative Wu theorem in étale cohomology, we study the compatibility of Steenrod operations on Chow groups and on étale cohomology. Using the resulting obstructions to algebraicity, we construct new examples of non-algebraic cohomology classes over various fields ($\mathbb{C}$, $\mathbb{R}$, $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p$, $\mathbb{F}_q$). We also use Steenrod operations to study the mod $2$ cohomology classes of a compact $\mathcal{C}^{\infty}$ manifold $M$ that are algebraizable, i.e. algebraic on some real algebraic model of $M$. We give new examples of algebraizable and non-algebraizable classes, answering questions of Benedetti, Dedò and Kucharz.

Abstract:We characterize primary operations in differential cohomology via stacks, and illustrate by differentially refining Steenrod squares and Steenrod powers explicitly. This requires a delicate interplay between integral, rational, and mod p cohomology, as well as cohomology with U(1) coefficients and differential forms. Along the way we develop computational techniques in differential cohomology, including a Künneth decomposition, that should also be useful in their own right, and point to applications to higher geometry and mathematical physics.

Abstract:Explicit extensions representing cocycles $x \in Ext_{A}^{s,t}(F_2,F_2)$ are useful in calculating Steenrod operations $Sq^i : Ext_{A}^{s,t}(F_2,F_2) \longrightarrow Ext_{A}^{s+i,2t}(F_2,F_2)$ by a method devised by the second author. This can be used to identify explicit cocycles in the minimal resolutions produced by the first author's computer programs, and this information is useful in determining differentials in the Adams spectral sequence.

Abstract:A polyhedral product is a natural subspace of a Cartesian product that is specified by a simplicial complex. The modern formalism arose as a generalization of the spaces known as moment-angle complexes which were developed within the nascent subject of toric topology. This field, which began as a topological approach to toric geometry and aspects of symplectic geometry, has expanded rapidly in recent years. The investigation of polyhedral products and their homotopy theoretic properties has developed to the point where they are studied in various fields of mathematics far removed from their origin. In this survey, we provide a brief historical overview of the development of this subject, summarize many of the main results and describe applications.

Quantum Steenrod operations of symplectic resolutions

Abstract:We study the mod $p$ equivariant quantum cohomology of conical symplectic resolutions. Using symplectic genus zero enumerative geometry, Fukaya and Wilkins defined operations on mod $p$ quantum cohomology deforming the classical Steenrod operations on mod $p$ cohomology. We conjecture that these quantum Steenrod operations on divisor classes agree with the $p$-curvature of the mod $p$ equivariant quantum connection, and verify this in the case of the Springer resolution. The key ingredient is a new compatibility relation between the quantum Steenrod operations and the shift operators.

Abstract:The A-polynomial encodes hyperbolic geometric information on knots and related manifolds. Historically, it has been difficult to compute, and particularly difficult to determine A-polynomials of infinite families of knots. Here, we compute A-polynomials by starting with a triangulation of a manifold, then using symplectic properties of the Neumann-Zagier matrix encoding the gluings to change the basis of the computation. The result is a simplification of the defining equations. We apply this method to families of manifolds obtained by Dehn filling, and show that the defining equations of their A-polynomials are Ptolemy equations which, up to signs, are equations between cluster variables in the cluster algebra of the cusp torus.

Critical Lambda-adic modular forms and bi-ordinary complexes

Abstract:We produce a flat $\Lambda$-module of $\Lambda$-adic critical slope overconvergent modular forms, producing a Hida-type theory that interpolates such forms over $p$-adically varying integer weights. This provides a Hida-theoretic explanation for an observation of Coleman that the rank of such forms is locally constant in the weight. The key to the interpolation is to use Coleman's presentation of de Rham cohomology in terms of overconvergent forms to link critical slope overconvergent modular forms with the ordinary part of 1st coherent cohomology of modular curves interpolated by Boxer--Pilloni's higher Hida theory. We also set up a Galois deformation theory designed to conform to these critical overconvergent forms and prove "$R = T$" for it. As applications, we (1) produce a "formal" $\Lambda$-adic interpolation of the ordinary part of de Rham cohomology, (2) produce a bi-ordinary complex whose Hecke algebra $T$ is a natural candidate for an "$R = T$" theorem where $R$ is a deformation ring for 2-dimensional $p$-adic representations of ${\rm Gal}(\bar{\bf Q}/{\bf Q})$ that become reducible and decomposable upon restriction to a decomposition group at $p$, (3) produce a degree-shifting Hecke action on the cohomology of the bi-ordinary complex, and (4) specialize this degree-shifting action to weight 1 and apply the critical "$R = T$" theorem to find, under a supplemental assumption, an action of a Stark unit on the part of weight 1 coherent cohomology over ${\bf Z}_p$ that is isotypic for an ordinary eigenform with complex multiplication.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to establish a correspondence between the higher Bruhat orders of Yu. I. Manin and V. Schechtman, and the cup-$i$ coproducts defining Steenrod squares in cohomology. To any element of the higher Bruhat orders we associate a coproduct, recovering Steenrod's original ones from extremal elements in these orders. Defining this correspondence involves interpreting the coproducts geometrically in terms of zonotopal tilings, which allows us to give conceptual proofs of their properties and show that all reasonable coproducts arise from our construction.

The Goodwillie calculus of polyhedral products

Abstract:We describe the Goodwillie calculus of polyhedral products in the case that the fat wedge filtration on the associated real moment-angle complex is trivial. We do this by analysing the behaviour on calculus of the Denham-Suciu fibre sequence, the Iriye-Kishimoto decomposition of the polyhedral product constructed from a collection of pairs of cones and their bases, and the Hilton-Milnor decomposition. As a corollary we show that the Goodwillie calculus of these polyhedral products converges integrally and diverges in $v_h$-periodic homotopy unless the simplicial complex is a full simplex.
