Abstract:Weakly collisional and collisionless plasmas are typically far from local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE), and understanding energy conversion in such systems is a forefront research problem. The standard approach is to investigate changes in internal (thermal) energy and density, but this omits energy conversion that changes any higher order moments of the phase space density. In this study, we calculate from first principles the energy conversion associated with all higher moments of the phase space density for systems not in LTE. Particle-in-cell simulations of collisionless magnetic reconnection reveal that energy conversion associated with higher order moments can be locally significant. The results may be useful in numerous plasma settings, such as reconnection, turbulence, shocks, and wave-particle interactions in heliospheric, planetary, and astrophysical plasmas.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the understanding of energy conversion mechanisms in weakly - collisional or collision - free plasmas far from local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). Such systems are ubiquitous in space and astrophysical environments, while traditional research methods mainly focus on density changes and internal (thermal) energy changes, ignoring energy conversions related to higher - order moments of phase - space density. By starting from first principles, the paper calculates the energy conversions associated with all higher - order moments of phase - space density, especially under non - LTE conditions, where the influence of these higher - order moments on energy conversion may be locally important. Specifically, the paper proposes a theoretical framework for quantifying the energy conversions associated with all internal moments of the phase - space density function \( f_\sigma \). These internal moments include, but are not limited to, the zero - order moment (i.e., density), the second - order moment (i.e., internal energy), and higher - order moments. The paper points out that in addition to compression work and internal energy changes, there are also energy conversions associated with changes in the shape of the phase - space density, which are usually ignored by traditional methods. Through particle - in - cell (PIC) research on the collision - free magnetic reconnection process, the paper reveals that the energy conversions associated with higher - order moments can be very significant in certain regions. In summary, this paper aims to provide a more comprehensive perspective for understanding energy conversion mechanisms in plasmas far from LTE conditions, especially those related to changes in the shape of the phase - space density function. This helps to gain in - depth understanding of complex dynamic processes in plasmas, such as magnetic reconnection, turbulence, shock waves, and wave - particle interactions in heliospheric, planetary, and astrophysical plasmas.
