Abstract:Artificial topological insulators in classical systems are thriving, especially the meta-atom-based three-dimensional (3D) topological lattices. Here we propose a paradigm based on engineering coupling networks in a generalized spatial Floquet lattice, which gives rise to low-loss and broadband 3D topological systems. A mapping between time and space dimensions is utilized to construct the Floquet system with chirality-assisted coupling patterns periodically modulated in spatial dimensions. The cyclotron orbiting motion of sound in the bulk and reversely orbiting motion on the surface are demonstrated, which provides a direct acoustic analogue of the electronic transport in Chern insulators. Weyl points and Fermi arc-like surface states unveil the topological transport of edge states. Splicing together two Floquet lattices with opposite chirality, we realize low-loss topological negative refraction on the surface, where the mirror reflection at the interface is prohibited. Our findings provide diverse ways to construct 3D devices with topological functionalities in acoustics and beyond.

Abstract:If a full band gap closes and then reopens when we continuously deform a periodic system while keeping its symmetry, a topological phase transition usually occurs. A common model demonstrating such a topological phase transition in condensed matter physics is the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. As well known, two distinct topological phases emerge when the intracell hopping is tuned from smaller to larger with respect to the intercell hopping in the model. The former case is topologically trivial, while the latter case is topologically non-trivial. Here, we design a 1D periodic acoustic system in exact analogy to the SSH model. The unit cell of the acoustic system is composed of two resonators and two junction tubes connecting them. We show that the topological phase transition happens in our acoustic analog when we tune the radii of the junction tubes which control the intercell and intracell hoppings. The topological phase transition is characterized by the abrupt change of the geometric Zak phase. The topological interface states between non-trivial and trivial phases of our acoustic analog are experimentally measured, and the results agree very well with the numerical values. Further, we show that topologically non-trivial phases of our acoustic analog of the SSH model can support edge states, on which the discussion is absent in previous works about topological acoustics. The edge states are robust against localized defects and perturbations.

Abstract:The acoustic analogy of topological insulators is a hot field of materials research. On one-dimensional acoustic systems, many researchers have lately paid their attention to the applications of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, which can support topologically nontrivial phases. In this paper, we design a supercell composed of two identical hollow cylinders with a side split immersed in the air background. The supercell is arranged in a line to form a SSH model, which has three bandgaps including two zone-folding-induced gaps and a local resonant gap in the subwavelength region. By analyzing the eigenstates and calculating the Zak phases, we find that a topological phase transition takes place only in the zone-folding-induced gaps when we rotate the split-cylinders. Thus, a finite-size array, made of two sublattices with distinct topological properties, inevitably produces topological interface states on their interface. In addition, we demonstrate that the topological interface states can be adjusted in a wide frequency range by rotating the cylinders that control the coupling strength between two split-cylinders in one supercell. These tunable topological interface states may have potential application prospects in wave filtering, wave detecting, and so on.

Abstract:We report on a direct mapping of acoustic slender waveguides to the one dimensional trimer Su- Schrieffer-Heeger model, with neither chiral nor mirror symmetry. Importantly, we can choose to perform this mapping for either the acoustic velocity or pressure. We demonstrate that, for finite systems, this choice is necessarily linked to the boundary conditions. It allows for the unveiling of the edge states of the acoustic system through an edge state phase diagram. An experimental realization of our setup in the audible regime corroborates our theoretical predictions.

Designing topological acoustic lattices via electroacoustic analogies

Abstract:Topological acoustics has recently witnessed a spurt in research activity, owing to their unprecedented properties transcending typical wave phenomena. In recent years, the use of coupled arrays of acoustic chambers has gained popularity in designing topological acoustic systems. In their common form, an array of acoustic chambers with relatively large volume is coupled via narrow channels. Such configuration is generally modeled as a full three-dimensional system, requiring extended computational time for simulating its harmonic response. To this end, this paper establishes a comprehensive mathematical treatment of the use of electroacoustic analogies for designing topological acoustic lattices. The potential of such analytical approach is demonstrated via two types of topological systems: (i) edge states with quantized winding numbers in an acoustic diatomic lattice and (ii) valley Hall transition in an acoustic honeycomb lattice that leads to robust waveguiding. In both cases, the established analytical approach exhibits an excellent agreement with the full three-dimensional model, whether in dispersion analyses or the response of an acoustic system with a finite number of cells. The established analytical framework is invaluable for designing a variety of acoustic topological insulators with minimal computational cost.

Abstract:The Su–Schrieffer–Heeger (SSH) model perhaps is the easiest and the most basic model for topological excitations. Many variations and extensions of the SSH model have been proposed and explored to better understand both fundamental and novel aspects of topological physics. The SSH4 model has been proposed theoretically as an extended SSH model with higher dimension (the internal dimension changes from two to four). It has been proposed that the winding number in this system can be determined through a higher-dimensional extension of the mean chiral displacement measurement, however, this has not yet been verified in experiment. Here, we report the realization of this model with ultracold atoms in a momentum lattice. We verify the winding number through measurement of the mean chiral displacement in a system with higher internal dimension, we map out the topological phase transition in this system, and we confirm the topological edge state by observation of the quench dynamics when atoms are initially prepared at the system boundary.

Abstract:Recently, higher-order topological insulators with both gapped edge states and in-gap corner states, have been simulated and observed. However, multiple higher-order extensible topological states have not yet been witnessed. Here, we fabricate two acoustic samples, each consisting of double sandwichlike heterostructures, a sonic crystal with a gapless state is inset between two sonic crystals with opposite topological phases in each heterostructure. We theoretically simulate and experimentally obtain the higher-order extensible topological states, which are induced by the Jackiw-Rebbi mechanism, and also demonstrate the robustness of the higher-order extensible topological states via experiment and numerical simulations. The distributions of the pressure fields of the higher-order extensible topological states localized within a certain range of the vertical direction, rather than at a corner, and decay exponentially in the horizontal direction. At the same time, by adjusting the number of layers of the middle sonic crystal in the double acoustic sandwichlike structures, we witness the multiple higher-order extensible topological states protected by band topology. Although the width of the middle sonic crystal is limited by the size of the sample, we provide a feasible solution for different energy harvesting, and enrich the understanding of higher-order topological states. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.18.044050 © 2022 American Physical Society

Abstract:In the last two decades, the emergence of acoustic metamaterials has offered previously unimaginable possibilities for extraordinary control of sound waves. For example, various extremely light-weight sound attenuation systems based on metamaterials and phononic crystals have been demonstrated. Equipped with reconfigurability, such systems will provide the on-demand controls of the passage or stopping of sound waves and are often called acoustic switches or sound switches. However, so far, no ventilated sound switch has been proposed, which can realize both satisfying sound transmission and ventilation. In this work, we demonstrate a topological ventilated sound switch achieving switchable transmission. This switch is based on the one-dimensional acoustic Su-Schrieffer–Heeger model, which leads to the appearance of the topological interface states, and the sound can be turned on or off with the desired ventilation performance. With only one topological unit, the high transmission ratio (∼20 dB) before and after switch has been demonstrated in both simulations and experiments. It should have potential applications in areas of the acoustic engineering where both specific frequency sound transmission and ventilation are required.

Abstract:The Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model is an important cornerstone in modern condensed-matter topology, yet it is the simplest one-dimensional (1D) tight binding approach to dwell into the characteristics of spinless electrons in chains of staggered bonds. Moreover, the chiral symmetry assures that its surface-confining states pin to zero energy, i.e., they reside midgap in the energy dispersion. Symmetry is also an attribute related to artificial media that are subject to parity P and time-reversal T operations. This non-Hermitian family has been thoroughly nourished in a wave-based context, where anti-PT (APT) symmetric systems are the youngest belonging members, permitting refractionless optics, inverse PT-symmetry breaking transition, and asymmetric mode switching. Here, we report the first extension of APT symmetry in an acoustic setting by endowing a SSH lattice with gain and loss components. We show that the in-gap topological defect state hinges on the non-Hermitian phase, in that the broken symmetry suppresses it, yet when PT or APT symmetry is intact, it is observed with either damped or evanescent decay, respectively. Our experiments showcase how the non-Hermitian SSH lattice serves as a utile platform to investigate topological properties across various PT symmetric phases using sound.

Abstract:The unique features of spinless time-reversal symmetry and tunable DOUBLE-STRUCK CAPITAL Z(2 )gauge fields in artificial systems facilitate the emergence of topological properties in the landscape, such as the recently explored Mobius-twisted phase and real second-order nodal-loop semimetals. However, these properties have predominantly been proposed only in theoretical frameworks. In this study, we present a cunningly designed blueprint for realizing an acoustic real second-order nodal-loop semimetal through the incorporation of projective translation symmetry into a three-dimensional stacked acoustic graphitic lattice. Additionally, we introduce non-Hermitian modulation to the topologically protected propagation of degenerate drumhead surface and hinge states, which depend on the specific on-site gain and loss textures. It should be emphasized that this demonstration can be extended to other classical wave systems, thereby potentially opening up opportunities for the design of functional topological devices.

Mobile Topological Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Soliton in a Josephson Metamaterial

Abstract:Circuits involving arrays of Josephson junctions have emerged as a new platform for exploring and simulating complex bosonic systems. Motivated by this advance, we develop and theoretically analyze a one-dimensional bosonic system with sublattice symmetry, a bosonic Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. The system features electrostatically controlled topological mid-gap states that we call soliton states. These modes can be measured using either spectroscopy through a normal lead or admittance measurements. We develop a protocol to adiabatically shuttle the position of these topological soliton states using local electrostatic gates. We demonstrate a nearly perfect fidelity of soliton shuttling for timescales within experimental reach.

Abstract:Topological materials and metamaterials opened new paradigms to create and manipulate phases of matter with unconventional properties. Topological D-class phases (TDPs) are archetypes of the ten-fold classification of topological phases with particle-hole symmetry. In two dimensions, TDPs support propagating topological edge modes that simulate the elusive Majorana elementary particles. Furthermore, a piercing of π-flux Dirac-solenoids in TDPs stabilizes localized Majorana excitations that can be braided for the purpose of topological quantum computation. Such two-dimensional (2D) TDPs have been a focus in the research frontier, but their experimental realizations are still under debate. Here, with a novel design scheme, we realize 2D TDPs in an acoustic crystal by synthesizing both the particle-hole and fermion-like time reversal symmetries for a wide range of frequencies. The design scheme leverages an enriched unit cell structure with real-valued couplings that emulate the targeted Hamiltonian of TDPs with complex hoppings: A technique that could unlock the realization of all topological classes with passive metamaterials. In our experiments, we realize a pair of TDPs with opposite Chern numbers in two independent sectors that are connected by an intrinsic fermion-like time-reversal symmetry built in the system. We measure the acoustic Majorana-like helical edge modes and visualize their robust topological transport, thus revealing the unprecedented D and DIII class topologies with direct evidence. Our study opens up a new pathway for the experimental realization of two fundamental classes of topological phases and may offer new insights in fundamental physics, materials science, and phononic information processing.

Topological D-Class Physics with Passive Acoustic Elements

Abstract:In this work, we supply an engineering solution that paves the way to the implementation of the full classification table of topological insulators with passive acoustic crystals. As an example, we design an acoustic crystal displaying the full range of characteristics of a topological insulator from class D, such as non-trivial Chern numbers and an exact particle-hole symmetry for both bulk and edge dynamics. The key is a particular geometry of the acoustic resonators that facilitates a large number of independent and equal-strength couplings, eight to be precise, such that the mode-coupling theory remains accurate. The latter enables us to implement with high fidelity the de-complexified tight-binding model generating the topological phases from class D in 2-dimensions, previously announced in [Barlas et al, PRB (2018)]. The successful realization of a topological acoustic crystal from class D paves the way to the observation of the Majorana-like modes stabilized by pi-fluxes.

Abstract:Higher-order topological insulators have aroused massive attention due to their fancy topological proper-ties. Artificial metamaterials, with their exquisite fabrications and measurements, offer an ideal approach to investigate topological properties in classical systems. Therein lower-dimensional corner states obtained in the three-dimensional (3D) Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model and the octupole insulator have been extensively explored in acoustic systems. However, the existing acoustic negative couplings in the quantized multipole topological phases are mostly formed by shifting the connecting waveguides between every two resonators, which support a restricted dipole resonance mode. Here we establish subwavelength acoustic third-order topo-logical insulators based on the theoretical frame of acoustic transmission lines and provide an innovative way for freely engineering acoustic negative couplings that work in arbitrary resonance modes. Furthermore, topological invariant calculations and numerical simulations in analogous acoustic networks validate the occurrence of topological corner states in both the 3D SSH model and octupole insulator. We foresee that the proposed methodology will broaden future avenues for studying atypical topological quantum effects with negative couplings in the classical macroscale context.
Topologically Protected One-Way Edge Mode in Networks of Acoustic Resonators with Circulating Air Flow

Abstract:Recent explorations of topology in physical systems have led to a new paradigm of condensed matters characterized by topologically protected states and phase transition, for example, topologically protected photonic crystals enabled by magneto-optical effects. However, in other wave systems such as acoustics, topological states cannot be simply reproduced due to the absence of similar magnetics-related sound-matter interactions in naturally available materials. Here, we propose an acoustic topological structure by creating an effective gauge magnetic field for sound using circularly flowing air in the designed acoustic ring resonators. The created gauge magnetic field breaks the time-reversal symmetry, and therefore topological properties can be designed to be nontrivial with non-zero Chern numbers verified by a tight-binding model and thus to enable a topological sonic crystal, in which the topologically protected acoustic edge-state transport is observed, featuring robust one-way propagation characteristics against a variety of topological defects and impurities. Interestingly, the one-way propagation direction is relevant to the azimuthal order of the resonant mode in the ring resonator which influences the corresponding topological Chern number. Our results open a new venue to non-magnetic topological structures and promise a unique approach to effective manipulation of acoustic interfacial transport at will.

Abstract:Higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs) in classical systems, featuring robust multidimensional boundary states protected by various crystalline symmetries, have become a fast-growing research branch in the vast topological family. Therein, valley pseudospins and layer pseudospins are separately introduced as extra degrees of freedom (DOFs) to manipulate topological phases. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that, by combining valley and layer DOFs, intriguing HOTIs can be realized. They host topological edge and corner states that are simultaneously valley dependent and layer polarized. We implement such HOTIs in bilayer sonic crystals (SCs) consisting of carefully stacked triangular scatterers. By rotating the scatterers, the valley and layer DOFs are interplayed, producing combined valley-layer polarizations. Correspondingly, the SCs exhibit versatile sound transport and localization. This inspires us to design an acoustic multiplexer, where sound waves can be guided along specific directions or trapped at specific locations, depending on the excitation frequencies. Our study of higher-order topology based on the interplay between valley and layer DOFs enriches the topological physics. With combined valley and layer polarizations, the resultant HOTIs also offer versatile ways to guide and/or trap sound waves, which have potential applications in integrated and multiplexing phononic devices.

Abstract:The \emph{chirality-controlled two-mode Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) models} are mimicked in a potential hybrid quantum system, with respect to two ensembles of solid-state spins coupled to a pair of interconnected surface-acoustic-wave (SAW) cavities, respectively. Assisted by the dichromatic classical optical drives with chiral designs, this proposal can simulate the two-mode LMG type long-range spin-spin interactions with a left-right asymmetry. For applications, this unconventional LMG model can not only engineer both ensembles of collective spins into the two-mode spin-squeezed (TMSS) states, but also simulate the fresh quantum critical phenomenon and time-crystal behaviours, and so on. Because this acoustic-based system can give rise to ion-trap-like interactions without any additional trap technique in principle, it is believed that our work can be considered a fresh attempt at realizing the chiral quantum manipulation of spin-spin interactions by using acoustic hybrid systems.
