Abstract:We prove that the Steinberg module of the special linear group of a quadratic imaginary number ring which is not Euclidean is not generated by integral apartments. Assuming the generalized Riemann hypothesis, this shows that the Steinberg module of a number ring is generated by integral apartments if and only if the ring is Euclidean. We also construct new cohomology classes in the top dimensional cohomology group of the special linear group of some quadratic imaginary number rings.

A presentation of symplectic Steinberg modules and cohomology of $\operatorname{Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{Z})$

Abstract:Borel-Serre proved that the integral symplectic group $\operatorname{Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{Z})$ is a virtual duality group of dimension $n^2$ and that the symplectic Steinberg module $\operatorname{St}^\omega_n(\mathbb{Q})$ is its dualising module. This module is the top-dimensional homology of the Tits building associated to $\operatorname{Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{Q})$. We find a presentation of this Steinberg module and use it to show that the codimension-1 rational cohomology of $\operatorname{Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{Z})$ vanishes for $n \geq 2$, $H^{n^2 -1}(\operatorname{Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{Z});\mathbb{Q}) \cong 0$. Equivalently, the rational cohomology of the moduli stack $\mathcal{A}_n$ of principally polarised abelian varieties of dimension $2n$ vanishes in the same degree. Our findings suggest a vanishing pattern for high-dimensional cohomology in degree $n^2-i$, similar to the one conjectured by Church-Farb-Putman for special linear groups.

Top-degree rational cohomology in the symplectic group of a number ring

Abstract:Let $K$ be a number field with ring of integers $R = \mathcal{O}_K$. We show that if $R$ is not a principal ideal domain, then the symplectic group $\operatorname{Sp}_{2n}(R)$ has non-trivial rational cohomology in its virtual cohomological dimension. This demonstrates a sharp contrast to the situation where $R$ is Euclidean. To prove our result, we study the symplectic Steinberg module, i.e. the top-dimensional homology group of the spherical building associated to $\operatorname{Sp}_{2n}(K)$. We show that this module is not generated by integral apartment classes.

Abstract:Let $D$ denote a quaternion division algebra over a non-archimedean local field $F$ with characteristic zero. Let $Sp_n(D)$ be the unique non-split inner form of the symplectic group $Sp_{2n}(F)$. An irreducible admissible representation $(\pi, V)$ of $GL_{n}(D)$ is said to have a symplectic model (or said to be $Sp_n(D)$-distinguished) if there exists a linear functional $\phi$ on $V$ such that $\phi(\pi(h)v) = \phi(v)$ for all $v \in V$ and $h \in Sp_n(D)$. This article classifies those ladder representations of $GL_n(D)$ that possess a symplectic model (i.e., those representations that are $Sp_n(D)$-distinguished). Recently, Prasad conjectured that non-supercuspidal discrete series representations of $GL_n(D)$ do not admit a symplectic model. We confirm this for the Steinberg representations, which serve as canonical examples of discrete series representations. Furthermore, we demonstrate the hereditary nature of the symplectic model for induced representations derived from finite-length representations. In addition, we prove a part of Prasad's conjecture, which provides a family of irreducible unitary representations, all equipped with a symplectic model.

Abstract:Bernstein-Schwarzman conjectured that the quotient of a complex affine space by an irreducible complex crystallographic group generated by reflections is a weighted projective space. The conjecture was proved by Schwarzman and Tokunaga-Yoshida in dimension 2 for almost all such groups, and for all crystallographic reflection groups of Coxeter type by Looijenga, Bernstein-Schwarzman and Kac-Peterson in any dimension. We prove that the conjecture is true for the crystallographic reflection group in dimension 3 for which the associated collineation group is Klein's simple group of order 168. In this case the quotient is the 3-dimensional weighted projective space with weights 1, 2, 4, 7. The main ingredient in the proof is the computation of the algebra of invariant theta functions. Unlike the Coxeter case, the invariant algebra is not free polynomial, and this was the major stumbling block.

Schubert puzzles and integrability II: multiplying motivic Segre classes

Abstract:In Schubert Puzzles and Integrability I we proved several "puzzle rules" for computing products of Schubert classes in K-theory (and sometimes equivariant K-theory) of d-step flag varieties. The principal tool was "quantum integrability", in several variants of the Yang--Baxter equation; this let us recognize the Schubert structure constants as q->0 limits of certain matrix entries in products of R- (and other) matrices of quantized affine algebra representations. In the present work we give direct cohomological interpretations of those same matrix entries but at finite q: they compute products of "motivic Segre classes", closely related to K-theoretic Maulik--Okounkov stable classes living on the cotangent bundles of the flag varieties. Without q->0, we avoid some divergences that blocked fuller understanding of d=3,4. The puzzle computations are then explained (in cohomology onlyin this work, not K-theory) in terms of Lagrangian convolutions between Nakajima quiver varieties. More specifically, the conormal bundle to the diagonal inclusion of a flag variety factors through a quiver variety that is not a cotangent bundle, and it is on that intermediate quiver variety that the R-matrix calculation occurs.

Abstract:Let be the ring of polynomial-valued holomorphic differential forms on complex n-space, referred to in physics as the superspace ring of rank n. The symmetric group acts diagonally on by permuting commuting and anticommuting generators simultaneously. We let be the ideal generated by -invariants with vanishing constant term and study the quotient of superspace by this ideal. We calculate the doubly-graded Hilbert series of and prove an 'operator theorem', which characterizes the harmonic space attached to in terms of the Vandermonde determinant and certain differential operators. Our methods employ commutative algebra results that were used in the study of Hessenberg varieties. Our results prove conjectures of N. Bergeron, Colmenarejo, Li, Machacek, Sulzgruber, Swanson, Wallach and Zabrocki.

Abstract:To the integral symplectic group Sp(2g,Z) we associate two posets of which we prove that they have the Cohen-Macaulay property. As an application we show that the locus of marked decomposable principally polarized abelian varieties in the Siegel space of genus g has the homotopy type of a bouquet of (g-2)-spheres. This, in turn, implies that the rational homology of moduli space of (unmarked) principal polarized abelian varieties of genus g modulo the decomposable ones vanishes in degree g-2 or lower. Another application is an improved stability range for the homology of the symplectic groups over Euclidean rings. But the original motivation comes from envisaged applications to the homology of groups of Torelli type. The proof of our main result rests on a refined nerve theorem for posets that may have an interest in its own right.
On Integrality of Non-Semisimple Quantum Representations of Mapping Class Groups

Abstract:For a root of unity $\zeta$ of odd prime order, we restrict coefficients of non-semisimple quantum representations of mapping class groups associated with the small quantum group $\mathfrak{u}_\zeta \mathfrak{sl}_2$ from $\mathbb{Q}(\zeta)$ to $\mathbb{Z}[\zeta]$. We do this by exhibiting explicit bases of states spaces that span $\mathbb{Z}[\zeta]$-lattices that are invariant under projective actions of mapping class groups.

Equivariant sheaves for classical groups acting on Grassmannians

Abstract:Let $V$ be a finite-dimensional complex vector space. Assume that $V$ is a direct sum of subspaces each of which is equipped with a nondegenerate symmetric or skew-symmetric bilinear form. In this paper, we introduce a stratification of the Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}_k(V)$ related to the action of the appropriate product of orthogonal and symplectic groups, and we study the topology of this stratification. The main results involve sheaves with coefficients in a field of characteristic other than $2$. We prove that there are "enough" parity sheaves, and that the hypercohomology of each parity sheaf also satisfies a parity-vanishing property. This situation arises in the following context: let $x$ be a nilpotent element in the Lie algebra of either $G = \mathrm{Sp}_N(\mathbb{C})$ or $G = \mathrm{SO}_N(\mathbb{C})$, and let $V = \ker x \subset \mathbb{C}^N$. Our stratification of $\mathrm{Gr}_k(V)$ is preserved by the centralizer $G^x$, and we expect our results to have applications in Springer theory for classical groups.

Lusztig sheaves and integrable highest weight modules in symmetrizable case

Abstract:The present paper continues the work of [2]. For any symmetrizable generalized Cartan Matrix $C$ and the corresponding quantum group $\mathbf{U}$, we consider the associated quiver $Q$ with an admissible automorphism $a$. We construct the category $\widetilde{\mathcal{Q}/\mathcal{N}}$ of the localization of Lusztig sheaves for the quiver with the automorphism. Its Grothendieck group gives a realization of the integrable highest weight $\mathbf{U}-$module $\Lambda_{\lambda}$, and modulo the traceless ones Lusztig sheaves provide the (signed) canonical basis of $\Lambda_{\lambda}$. As an application, the symmetrizable crystal structures on Nakajima's quiver varieties and Lusztig's nilpotent varieties of preprojective algebras are deduced.

Abstract:In this paper, the irreducible representations of the coordinate ring Oq(spC2n) of quantum symplectic space are classified. Especially, the De Concini–Kac–Procesi conjecture is proved to be true for this algebra. The main steps are the computation of the center and the degree of the algebra Oq(spC2n) by using the associated quasipolynomial algebra Oq(spC2n), find some “good” points in the underlying symplectic leaves and construct some quasipolynomial algebras correspond to these “good” points.

Abstract:We prove that Schubert varieties in flag manifolds are uniquely determined by their equivariant cohomology classes, as well as a stronger result that replaces Schubert varieties with closures of Bialynicki-Birula cells under suitable conditions. This is used to prove that any two-pointed curve neighborhood representing a quantum cohomology product with a Seidel class is a Schubert variety.

The $q$-Schur category and polynomial tilting modules for quantum $GL_n$

Abstract:The $q$-Schur category is a $\mathbb{Z}[q,q^{-1}]$-linear monoidal category closely related to the $q$-Schur algebra. We explain how to construct it from coordinate algebras of quantum $GL_n$ for all $n \geq 0$. Then we use Donkin's work on Ringel duality for $q$-Schur algebras to make precise the relationship between the $q$-Schur category and an integral form for the $U_q\mathfrak{gl}_n$-web category of Cautis, Kamnitzer and Morrison. We construct explicit integral bases for morphism spaces in the latter category, and extend the Cautis-Kamnitzer-Morrison theorem to polynomial representations of quantum $GL_n$ at a root of unity over a field of any characteristic.

The Weil-Steinberg character of finite classical groups

Abstract:We compute the irreducible constitutents of the product of the Weil character and the Steinberg character in those finite classical groups for which a Weil character is defined, namely the symplectic, unitary and general linear groups. It turns out that this product is multiplicity free for the symplectic and general unitary groups, but not for the general linear groups. As an application we show that the restriction of the Steinberg character of such a group to the subgroup stabilizing a vector in the natural module is multiplicity free. The proof of this result for the unitary groups uses an observation of Brunat, published as an appendix to our paper. As our "Weil character" for the symplectic groups in even characteristic we use the 2-modular Brauer character of the generalized spinor representation. Its product with the Steinberg character is the Brauer character of a projective module. We also determine its indecomposable direct summands.

Abstract:We compute the total Stiefel-Whitney Classes (SWCs) for orthogonal representations of special linear groups $\text{SL}(n,q)$ when $n$ and $q$ are odd. These classes are expressed in terms of character values at diagonal elements of order $2$. We give several consequences, and work out the $4$th SWC explicitly, and the $8$th SWC when the $4$th vanishes.

On $p$-refined Friedberg-Jacquet integrals and the classical symplectic locus in the $\mathrm{GL}_{2n}$ eigenvariety

Abstract:Friedberg--Jacquet proved that if $\pi$ is a cuspidal automorphic representation of $\mathrm{GL}_{2n}(\mathbb{A})$, $\pi$ is a functorial transfer from $\mathrm{GSpin}_{2n+1}$ if and only if a global zeta integral $Z_H$ over $H = \mathrm{GL}_n \times \mathrm{GL}_n$ is non-vanishing on $\pi$. We conjecture a $p$-refined analogue: that any $P$-parahoric $p$-refinement $\tilde\pi^P$ is a functorial transfer from $\mathrm{GSpin}_{2n+1}$ if and only if a $P$-twisted version of $Z_H$ is non-vanishing on the $\tilde\pi^P$-eigenspace in $\pi$. This twisted $Z_H$ appears in all constructions of $p$-adic $L$-functions via Shalika models. We prove various results towards the conjecture by connecting it to the study of classical symplectic families in the $\mathrm{GL}_{2n}$ eigenvariety. If $\pi$ is spherical at $p$, there are $(2n)!$ attached $p$-refinements to Iwahori level; we conjecture the dimensions of such families through each of these, prove the upper bound unconditionally, and (by constructing the families) prove the lower bound under a non-critical slope assumption. For example, for $\mathrm{GL}_4$, we conjecture that (modulo 1-dimensional trivial variation) 8 refinements vary in 2-dimensional symplectic families, 8 in 1-dimensional symplectic families, and prove 8 do not vary in any symplectic family.

Abstract:Let $\sg$ be a complex finite-dimensional simple Lie algebra and let $\sg_l$ be the corresponding generalized Takiff algebra. This paper studies the affine variety $\ssf+\sb_l$ where $\ssf$ is similar to a principal nilpotent element of $\sg$ and $\sb_l$ is a subalgebra corresponding to the Borel subalgebra $\sb$ of $\sg$. Inspired by Kostant's work then we deal with two questions. One of them is to construct the Whittaker model for the $G_l$-invariants of symmetric algebra $S(\sg_l)$ where $G_l$ is the adjoint group of $\sg_l$ and $G_l$ acts on $S(\sg_l)$ by coadjoint action, and then to classify all nonsingular Whittaker modules over $\sg_l$. Another one is to describe the symplectic structure of the manifold $Z\subseteq\ssf+\sb_l$ of normalized Jacobi elements. Then the Hamiltonian corresponding to a fundamental invariant provides a class of hyperbolic Toda lattices. In particular, a simplest example describes the state of a dynamical system consisting of a positive mass particle and a negative mass particle.

Abstract:We prove that the direct sum of all homology groups of the integral general linear groups with Steinberg module coefficients form a commutative Hopf algebra, in particular a free graded commutative algebra. We use this to construct new infinite families of unstable cohomology classes of $SL_n(\mathbb Z)$.
