Abstract:The Fermi sea topology is characterized by the Euler characteristics $\chi_F$. In this paper, we examine how $\chi_F$ of the metallic state is inhereted by the topological invariant of the superconducting state. We establish a correspondence between the Euler characteristic and the Chern number $C$ of $p$-wave topological superconductors without time-reversal symmetry in two dimensions. By rewriting the pairing potential $\Delta_{\bf k}=\Delta_1-i\Delta_2$ as a vector field ${\bf u}=(\Delta_1,\Delta_2)$, we found that $\chi_F=C$ when ${\bf u}$ and fermion velocity ${\bf v}$ can be smoothly deformed to be parallel or antiparallel on each Fermi surface. We also discuss a similar correspondence between Euler characteristic and 3D winding number of time-reversal-invariant $p$-wave topological superconductors in three dimensions.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to establish the correspondence between the Euler characteristic (\(\chi_F\)) of the Fermi sea and the topological invariants of topological superconductors. Specifically, the author explored how the Euler characteristic in the metallic state is inherited into the topological invariants in the topological superconducting state, and established specific mathematical connections in two - dimensional and three - dimensional systems respectively.
### Specific description of the problem:
1. **Correspondence in two - dimensional systems**:
- In a two - dimensional p - wave topological superconductor without time - reversal symmetry, the author represented the pairing potential \(\Delta_k=\Delta_1 - i\Delta_2\) as a vector field \(u = (\Delta_1,\Delta_2)\), and found that when \(u\) and the fermion velocity \(v=\nabla_k\epsilon_k / \hbar\) can be smoothly deformed to be parallel or antiparallel on each Fermi surface, the Euler characteristic \(\chi_F\) is equal to the Chern number \(C\).
- The mathematical expression is: \(\chi_F = C\).
2. **Correspondence in three - dimensional systems**:
- In a three - dimensional p - wave topological superconductor with time - reversal symmetry, the topological invariant of the system is described by the 3D winding number \(N_w\). When \(u\) and the fermion velocity \(v\) can be smoothly deformed to be parallel on each Fermi surface, half of the Euler characteristic is equal to the 3D winding number.
- The mathematical expression is: \(\frac{\chi_F}{2}=N_w\).
### Core contributions of the paper:
- **Establishing new topological correspondence**: The author discovered the direct connection between the Euler characteristic and the topological invariants of topological superconductors, which provides a new perspective for understanding the topological properties in different physical systems.
- **Possibility of experimental verification**: By introducing the superconducting proximity effect, this correspondence can be verified experimentally, for example, by measuring the number and chirality of Majorana edge modes to detect the Euler characteristic.
### Experimental significance:
- **Superconducting proximity effect**: Using the superconducting proximity effect, chiral p - wave superconductivity can be induced on a two - dimensional metallic sample, thereby verifying the correspondence between the Euler characteristic and the Chern number.
- **Lifshitz transition**: It has been found that the Lifshitz transition in the metallic phase can lead to a topological transition in the superconducting phase. In particular, under the application of pressure, these transitions can be marked by observing the changes in Majorana edge modes.
In summary, by establishing the connection between the Euler characteristic and the topological invariants of topological superconductors, this paper reveals the deep - level correlation of topological properties in different physical systems and provides a theoretical basis for future experimental verification.
