Abstract:We study the dependence of the primordial nuclear abundances as a function of the electromagnetic fine-structure constant $\alpha$, keeping all other fundamental constants fixed. We update the leading nuclear reaction rates, in particular the electromagnetic contribution to the neutron-proton mass difference pertinent to $\beta$-decays, and go beyond certain approximations made in the literature. In particular, we include the temperature-dependence of the leading nuclear reactions rates and assess the systematic uncertainties by using four different publicly available codes for Big Bang nucleosynthesis. Disregarding the unsolved so-called lithium-problem, we find that the current values for the observationally based $^{2}$H and $^{4}$He abundances restrict the fractional change in the fine-structure constant to less than $2\%$, which is a tighter bound than found in earlier works on the subject.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to study the influence of the electromagnetic fine - structure constant ($\alpha$) on nuclear abundances in primordial nucleosynthesis. Specifically, the authors re - evaluated how changes in $\alpha$, while keeping other fundamental constants unchanged, affect nuclear reaction rates in primordial nucleosynthesis. They updated the main nuclear reaction rates, especially the influence of the electromagnetic contribution on the neutron - proton mass difference, and went beyond some approximation methods in the literature. By using four different publicly available Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) codes to evaluate systematic uncertainties, they considered the influence of temperature on the main nuclear reaction rates. ### Main research questions 1. **The influence of changes in the electromagnetic fine - structure constant $\alpha$ on nuclear abundances in primordial nucleosynthesis**: - The authors studied how changes in $\alpha$ affect nuclear reaction rates in primordial nucleosynthesis, thereby affecting the abundances of the finally produced light elements (such as deuterium and helium - 4). - They paid particular attention to the dependence of $\alpha$ on nuclear reaction rates, including direct reactions, radiative capture reactions, and $\beta$ - decays. 2. **Evaluation of systematic uncertainties**: - To evaluate systematic uncertainties, the authors used four different BBN codes, which differ in the number of nuclides considered, reaction types, and the specific parameterization of nuclear reaction rates. - By comparing the results of different codes, the authors were able to more comprehensively understand the influence of $\alpha$ changes on the nucleosynthesis process. 3. **Consideration of temperature dependence**: - The authors considered the influence of temperature on the main nuclear reaction rates, an aspect that was less involved in previous studies. - They calculated in detail the influence of temperature on reaction rates by the method of numerical integration, thus providing more accurate results. ### Main conclusions - **The currently observed abundances of deuterium and helium - 4 limit the relative change of $\alpha$ to no more than 2%**, which is a more stringent limit than in earlier studies. - **The influence of temperature dependence on reaction rates is significant**, especially under low - temperature conditions. - **The changes in the electromagnetic fine - structure constant have a particularly significant influence on $\beta$ - decays and weak interactions (such as neutron - proton conversion)**, which further affects the evolution of neutron abundances in the primordial nucleosynthesis process. ### Formula summary - **Electromagnetic fine - structure constant**: \[ \alpha=\frac{e^{2}}{\hbar c} \] - **Average value of nuclear reaction rates**: \[ \gamma_{ab\rightarrow cd}(T)=N_{A}\sqrt{\frac{8}{\pi\mu_{ab}(kT)^{3}}}\int_{0}^{\infty}dE\,E\,\sigma_{ab\rightarrow cd}(E)e^{-E / kT} \] - **Coulomb penetration factor**: \[ P(x)=\frac{x}{e^{x}-1},\quad\text{where}\quad x = \frac{2\pi Z_{a}Z_{b}\mu_{ab}c^{2}\alpha}{\hbar c k} \] - **$\beta$ - decay rate**: \[ \lambda=\frac{G^{2}}{2\pi^{3}m_{p}c^{2}\hbar}|M_{ac}|^{2}f(Z,q) \] where, \[ f(\pm Z,q)=\int_{0}^{1}dx\,F(\pm Z,x)\sqrt{x^{2}-1}x(q - x)^{2} \] Through these studies, the authors provide new insights into understanding the role of the electromagnetic fine - structure constant in primordial nucleosynthesis and lay the foundation for future related research.
