Abstract:There has been much progress in recent years in the simulation of Casimir forces between various objects. Current methods have allowed traditional computational electromagnetic solvers to be used to find the Casimir forces in arbitrary three-dimensional objects. The underlying theory to these approaches requires knowledge and manipulation of advanced quantum field theory or quantum statistical physics. We present a means of deriving the Casimir force using the method of moments via the argument principle that presents a simplified derivation and greater freedom in the representation of the moment matrix.

Abstract:Abstract This study provides analytic solutions for the magnetic field of coils and magnets that have a non‐axisymmetric cylindrical geometry with a rectangular cross‐section. New analytic solutions are provided for radially magnetized permanent magnet arcs, thin coil disc sectors, and thick coil sectors. If components of the 3D field are not representable in closed‐form or as canonical Legendre elliptic integrals, the exact solution is given in terms of a series of regularized beta functions. The limit and hence spatial convergence is found to these series, giving a well‐defined and fast solving algorithm for computation. The equations can be readily applied to find the magnetostatic field in linear or non‐linear systems that contain a large set of elements. Example applications are provided to demonstrate how the field can be used to calculate forces and benchmark computational efficiency of the equations. A thorough review of the preceding literature and background theory is provided before a detailed methodology obtaining the analytic solutions contained in this compendium, and further related geometries in cylindrical or spherical coordinates. This is the first study to comprehensively solve the field equations for this collection of electromagnetic geometries.

Abstract:Force-Free Electrodynamics (FFE) describes magnetically dominated relativistic plasma via non-linear equations for the electromagnetic field alone. Such plasma is thought to play a key role in the physics of pulsars and active black holes. Despite its simple covariant formulation, FFE has primarily been studied in 3+1 frameworks, where spacetime is split into space and time. In this article we systematically develop the theory of force-free magnetospheres taking a spacetime perspective. Using a suite of spacetime tools and techniques (notably exterior calculus) we cover 1) the basics of the theory, 2) exact solutions that demonstrate the extraction and transport of the rotational energy of a compact object (in the case of a black hole, the Blandford-Znajek mechanism), 3) the behavior of current sheets, 4) the general theory of stationary, axisymmetric magnetospheres and 5) general properties of pulsar and black hole magnetospheres. We thereby synthesize, clarify and generalize known aspects of the physics of force-free magnetospheres, while also introducing several new results.

Abstract:An exact solution for a magnetostatic boundary value problem involving two fused (overlapping) spheres placed in a field generated by an axial magnetic point dipole is constructed based on the image method. The basic idea is illustrated for two unequal superconducting spheres intersecting with a vertex angle π/2 and the analytical solution for the scalar magnetic potential satisfying the Neumann boundary condition at the surface is derived. The image solution for a dipole-twin-sphere configuration consists of three image dipoles—one inside each sphere and the third inside a pseudo-/virtual sphere—all located at the respective inverse points inside the superconducting two-sphere assembly. The levitation force acting on the two-sphere superconducting surface is also calculated for the overlapping geometry. These exact results can be used as a benchmark for testing numerical algorithms for overlapping spherical superconductors. Our simple approach also offers clues for solving the Neumann boundary value problem for vertex angles π/n, n is an integer, and other related superconducting geometries.

Self-consistent equilibrium of a force-free magnetic flux rope

Abstract:We present an exact solution to the problem of a self-consistent equilibrium force-free magnetic flux rope. Unlike other approaches, we use magnetostatic equations and assume only a relatively rapid decrease in the axial magnetic field at infinity. For the first time we obtain a new nonlinear equation for the axial current density, the derivation of which does not require any phenomenological assumptions. From the resulting nonlinear equation, we analytically find the radial profiles of the components of the magnetic field strength and current density.

Abstract:Starting from Bernstein's principle of magnetohydrodynamic energy, a general analysis is presented for the stability of a kind of 1-D force-free magnetic fields with singular current density surfaces and a single parameter in cylindrical coordinates. It is found that in the parameter space of this kind of force-free magnetic fields there simultaneously exist stable and unstable regions. Their stability is solely determined by the radial distribution of the magnetic pitch in the neighborhood of the cylinder axis, and is independent of the presence of singular current density surface at the boundary of the field.

Abstract:We present numerical solutions for stationary and axisymmetric equilibriums of compact stars associated with extremely strong magnetic fields. The interior of the compact stars is assumed to satisfy ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) conditions, while in the region of negligible mass density the force-free conditions or electromagnetic vacuum are assumed. Solving all components of Einstein's equations, Maxwell's equations, ideal MHD equations, and force-free conditions, equilibriums of rotating compact stars associated with mixed poloidal and toroidal magnetic fields are obtained. It is found that in the extreme cases the strong mixed magnetic fields concentrating in a toroidal region near the equatorial surface expel the matter and form a force-free toroidal magnetotunnel. We also introduce a new differential rotation law for computing solutions associated with force-free magnetosphere, and present other extreme models without the magnetotunnel.

Abstract:Force-free electrodynamics is the theoretical paradigm used to describe electromagnetic fields in a region where the inertia of plasma is negligible compared to the strength of the electromagnetic field. While these fields are studied extensively around accreting black holes in an attempt to describe energy extraction, force-free fields also routinely appear in the study of cosmological magnetic fields. Despite this, there are no systematic studies of exact force-free fields in an expanding universe. In this paper, we use geometric methods to find a wide variety of force-free solutions in a fixed Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker metric background. The method we use can be directly generalized to any arbitrary electrically neutral space-time, and hence, provides a powerful tool to study force-free fields in general.

Abstract:By considering a general form of the Landau-Lifshitz equation under the influence of a homogeneous external magnetic fields, we prove that for a ferromagnetic body which occupies a bounded domain Ω in ℝ3 there exists a global weak solution either for the Dirichlet problem or for the Neumann problem. Although there is, in general, non-uniqueness result for the Landau-Lifshitz equation, the uniqueness result for the dynamic equation with constant initial data, which connects with the ground state of the magnetization in physical meanings, is pointed out.
Force Free Magnetic Field and Modifications in Kerr Black Hole

Abstract:A recent research presented a solution for a Schwarzschild black hole with a force-free magnetic field showing how the canonical form of background metric changes, Found. Phys. 52 (2022) 4, 93. Therefore, it is logical that this research seeks modified solutions for the Kerr black hole as well. The goal of this paper is, thereby, to pinpoint an exact solution for the Kerr black holes perturbed by force-free magnetic fields. However, to do this we use a well-known tetrad formalism and obtain an explicit expression for the electromagnetic strength tensor in the background metric, that is Kerr, based on the tangent space calculations. Analyzing the stress-energy tensor reveals the perturbed factors in the metric that allow us to understand better the physics of the disks around massive and supermassive black holes. These results show that it is not enough to depend solely on perturbation theory set against the background metric, without considering the backreaction of the force-free magnetufluid on it. This research indicates the necessity of studying the impact of force-free magnetic fields on the structure and evolution of mysterious cosmic objects.

Effective Field Theory of Force-Free Electrodynamics

Abstract:Force-free electrodynamics (FFE) is a closed set of equations for the electromagnetic field of a magnetically dominated plasma. There are strong arguments for the existence of force-free plasmas near pulsars and active black holes, but FFE alone cannot account for the observational signatures, such as coherent radio emission and relativistic jets and winds. We reformulate FFE as the effective field theory of a cold string fluid and initiate a systematic study of corrections in a derivative expansion. At leading order the effective theory is equivalent to (generalized) FFE, with the strings comprised by magnetic field line worldsheets. Higher-order corrections generically give rise to non-zero accelerating electric fields ($\mathbf{E}\cdot \mathbf{B}\neq 0$). We discuss potential observable consequences and comment on an intriguing numerical coincidence.

Abstract:Abridged. Fast rotating and self-gravitating astrophysical objects suffer strong deformations from centrifugal forces. If moreover they are magnetized, they generate an electromagnetic wave that is perturbed accordingly. When stellar objects are also surrounded by an ideal plasma, a magnetosphere is formed. We study the electromagnetic configuration of a force-free magnetosphere encompassing an ideal spheroidal rotating conductor as an inner boundary. We put special emphasize to millisecond period neutron star magnetospheres, those showing a significant oblate shape. Force-free solutions are computed by numerical integration of the time-dependent Maxwell equations in spheroidal coordinates. Relevant quantities such as the magnetic field structure, the spin down luminosity, the polar cap rims and the current density are shown. We find that the force-free magnetic field produced by spheroidal stars remains very similar to their spherical counterpart. However, the spin down luminosity slightly decreases with increasing oblateness or prolateness. Moreover the polar cap area increases and always mostly encompasses the equivalent spherical star polar cap rims. The polar cap current density is also drastically affected.

Abstract:Nonlinear force-free solutions for the magnetic field in the solar corona constructed using photospheric vector magnetic field boundary data suffer from a basic problem: the observed boundary data are inconsistent with the nonlinear force-free model. Specifically, there are two possible choices of boundary conditions on vertical current provided by the data, and the two choices lead to different force-free solutions. A novel solution to this problem is described. Bayesian probability is used to modify the boundary values on current density, using field-line connectivity information from the two force-free solutions and taking into account uncertainties, so that the boundary data are more consistent with the two nonlinear force-free solutions. This procedure may be iterated until a set of self-consistent boundary data (the solutions for the two choices of boundary conditions are the same) is achieved. The approach is demonstrated to work in application to Hinode/SOT observations of NOAA active region 10953.

Abstract:The magnetic flux tube concentrating strong magnetic field is the basic configuration of magneticfield in the solar atmosphere. In the present paper, the equilibrium of isolated magnetic flux tube inthe solar atmosphere is discussed. In the viewpoint of mathematics, the boundary condition is nonlinearand the position of boundary needs to be determined by the physical condition although the equation ofmagnetic potential is linear for the linear force-free field. Analytical solutions to the arches of bothuniform circular cross-section and non-uniform cross section have been obtained. The results show thatthe nonlinear problem may have or not have any solution according to different azimuthal components of the magnetic field; the number of solutions to the nonlinear problem is four at most, and two in some cases. In the present paper, the analytical solutions to the approximations of both fat and slender arches are given in detail, and the general features of magnetic arch structure are shown.
Obstructions to topological relaxation for generic magnetic fields

Abstract:For any axisymmetric toroidal domain $\Omega \subset \mathbf{R}^3$ we prove that there is a locally generic set of divergence-free vector fields that are not topologically equivalent to any magnetohydrostatic (MHS) equilibrium in $\Omega$. Each vector field in this set is Morse-Smale on the boundary, does not admit a nonconstant first integral, and exhibits fast growth of periodic orbits; in particular this set is residual in the Newhouse domain. The key dynamical idea behind this result is that a vector field with a dense set of nondegenerate periodic orbits cannot be topologically equivalent to a generic MHS equilibrium. On the analytic side, this geometric obstruction is implemented by means of a novel rigidity theorem for the relaxation of generic magnetic fields with a suitably complex orbit structure.

Abstract:A theoretical method is described to analytically calculate a pair of surface current densities, which produce a desired static magnetic field in one region of the space and zero magnetic field in another. The analysis is based on the known relationship between a surface current density and a stream function, the equivalence of stream functions and surface magnetic dipole density, and the scalar potential representation of the associated magnetic field in free space. From these relations, we formulate the magnetostatic problem, which is often treated as a vector field problem, as a scalar field problem in which a two-dimensional scalar field (stream function) is related to a three-dimensional one (magnetic scalar potential) via the differentiation of the electrostatic Green's function 1/|r-rs|. It is shown that, in a coordinate system in which a separated form of the Green's function exists (separable coordinate system), there exists a simple relationship between a harmonic component of a stream function and a harmonic component of the magnetic scalar potential. The method is applied to calculate idealized surface current patterns for actively shielded, linear gradient field coils in the Cartesian, cylindrical, and spherical coordinates.
