Abstract:In this note, we extend the detailed study of the linearized dynamics obtained for cnoidal waves of the Korteweg--de Vries equation in \cite{JFA-R} to small-amplitude periodic traveling waves of the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations that are not subject to Benjamin--Feir instability. With the adapted notion of stability, this provides for such waves, global-in-time bounded stability in any Sobolev space, and asymptotic stability of dispersive type. When doing so, we actually prove that such results also hold for waves of arbitrary amplitude satisfying a form of spectral stability designated here as dispersive spectral stability.

Abstract:Using a modified version of Weinstein's argument for constrained minimization in nonlinear dispersive equations, we prove existence of solitary waves in fully nonlocally nonlinear equations, as long as the linear multiplier is of positive and slightly higher order than the Coifman-Meyer nonlinear multiplier. It is therefore the relative order of the linear term over the nonlinear one that determines the method and existence for these types of equations. In analogy to Korteweg-De Vries-type equations and water waves in the capillary regime, smooth solutions of all amplitudes can be found. We consider two structural types of symmetric Coifman-Meyer symbols $n(\xi-\eta,\eta)$, and show that cyclical symmetry is necessary for the existence of a functional formulation. Estimates for the solution and wave speed are given as the solutions tend to the bifurcation point of solitary waves.

Nonlinear waves, modulations and rogue waves in the modular Korteweg-de Vries equation

Abstract:Effects of nonlinear dynamics of solitary waves and wave modulations within the modular (also known as quadratically cubic) Korteweg - de Vries equation are studied analytically and numerically. Large wave events can occur in the course of interaction between solitons of different signs. Stable and unstable (finite-time-lived) breathers can be generated in inelastic collisions of solitons and from perturbations of two polarities. A nonlinear evolution equation on long modulations of quasi-sinusoidal waves is derived, which is the modular or quadratically cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Its solutions in the form of envelope solitons describe breathers of the modular Korteweg - de Vries equation. The instability conditions are obtained from the linear stability analysis of periodic wave perturbations. Rogue-wave-type solutions emerging due to the modulational instability in the modular Korteweg - de Vries equation are simulated numerically. They exhibit similar wave amplification, but develop faster than in the Benjamin - Feir instability described by the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation.

Abstract:We show global asymptotic stability of solitary waves of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation in space dimension 1. Furthermore, the radiation is shown to exhibit long range scattering if the nonlinearity is cubic at the origin, or standard scattering if it is higher order. We handle a general nonlinearity without any vanishing condition, requiring that the linearized operator around the solitary wave has neither nonzero eigenvalues, nor threshold resonances. Initial data are chosen in a neighborhood of the solitary waves in the natural space $H^1 \cap L^{2,1}$ (where the latter is the weighted $L^2$ space). The proof relies on the analysis of resonances as seen through the distorted Fourier transform, combined for the first time with modulation and renormalization techniques.

Abstract:The Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation is known as a universal equation describing various long waves in dispersive systems. In this article, we prove that in a certain scaling regime, a large class of rough solutions to the Boussinesq equation are approximated by the sums of two counter-propagating waves solving the KdV equations. It extends the earlier result by \cite{Schneider1998} to slightly more regular than $L^2$-solutions. Our proof is based on robust Fourier analysis methods developed for the low regularity theory of nonlinear dispersive equations.

Abstract:Recently, two different proofs for large and intermediate-size solitary waves of the nonlocally dispersive Whitham equation have been presented, using either global bifurcation theory or the limit of waves of large period. We give here a different approach by maximising directly the dispersive part of the energy functional, while keeping the remaining nonlinear terms fixed with an Orlicz-space constraint. This method is, to the best of our knowledge new in the setting of water waves. The constructed solutions are bell-shaped in the sense that they are even, one-sided monotone, and attain their maximum at the origin. The method initially considers weaker solutions than in earlier works, and is not limited to small waves: a family of solutions is obtained, along which the dispersive energy is continuous and increasing. In general, our construction admits more than one solution for each energy level, and waves with the same energy level may have different heights. Although a transformation in the construction hinders us from concluding the family with an extreme wave, we give a quantitative proof that the set reaches 'large' or 'intermediate-sized' waves.

Existence of spiral waves in oscillatory media with nonlocal coupling

Abstract:We prove existence of spiral waves in oscillatory media with nonlocal coupling. Our starting point is a nonlocal complex Ginzburg-Landau (cGL) equation, rigorously derived as an amplitude equation for integro-differential equations undergoing a Hopf bifurcation. Because this reduced equation includes higher order terms that are usually ignored in a formal derivation of the cGL, the solutions we find also correspond to solutions of the original nonlocal system. To prove existence of these patterns we use perturbation methods together with the implicit function theorem. Within appropriate parameter regions, we find that spiral wave patterns have wavenumbers, $\kappa$, with expansion $\kappa \sim C e^{-a/\varepsilon}$, where $a$ is a positive constant, $\varepsilon$ is the small bifurcation parameter, and the positive constant $C$ depends on the strength and spread of the nonlocal coupling. The main difficulty we face comes from the linear operators appearing in our system of equations. Due to the symmetries present in the system, and because the equations are posed on the plane, these maps have a zero eigenvalue embedded in their essential spectrum. Therefore, they are not invertible when defined between standard Sobolev spaces and a straightforward application of the implicit function theorem is not possible. We surpass this difficulty by redefining the domain of these operators using doubly weighted Sobolev spaces. These spaces encode algebraic decay/growth properties of functions, near the origin and in the far field, and allow us to recover Fredholm properties for these maps.

Standing and Traveling Waves in a Nonlinearly Dispersive Lattice Model

Abstract:In the work of Colliander et al. (2010), a minimal lattice model was constructed describing the transfer of energy to high frequencies in the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation. In the present work, we present a systematic study of the coherent structures, both standing and traveling, that arise in the context of this model. We find that the nonlinearly dispersive nature of the model is responsible for standing waves in the form of discrete compactons. On the other hand, analysis of the dynamical features of the simplest nontrivial variant of the model, namely the dimer case, yields both solutions where the intensity is trapped in a single site and solutions where the intensity moves between the two sites, which suggests the possibility of moving excitations in larger lattices. Such excitations are also suggested by the dynamical evolution associated with modulational instability. Our numerical computations confirm this expectation, and we systematically construct such traveling states as exact solutions in lattices of varying size, as well as explore their stability. A remarkable feature of these traveling lattice waves is that they are of "antidark" type, i.e., they are mounted on top of a non-vanishing background. These studies shed light on the existence, stability and dynamics of such standing and traveling states in $1+1$ dimensions, and pave the way for exploration of corresponding configurations in higher dimensions.

Large amplitude quasi-periodic traveling waves in two dimensional forced rotating fluids

Abstract:We establish the existence of quasi-periodic traveling wave solutions for the $\beta$-plane equation on $\mathbb{T}^2$ with a large quasi-periodic traveling wave external force. These solutions exhibit large sizes, which depend on the frequency of oscillations of the external force. Due to the presence of small divisors, the proof relies on a nonlinear Nash-Moser scheme tailored to construct nonlinear waves of large size. To our knowledge, this is the first instance of constructing quasi-periodic solutions for a quasilinear PDE in dimensions greater than one, with a 1-smoothing dispersion relation that is highly degenerate - indicating an infinite-dimensional kernel for the linear principal operator. This degeneracy challenge is overcome by preserving the traveling-wave structure, the conservation of momentum and by implementing normal form methods for the linearized system with sublinear dispersion relation in higher space dimension.

Abstract:We construct asymptotic solutions of a special type for the nonlinear system of shallow water equations in two-dimensional basins with gentle shores and depth function , where . These solutions represent waves localized near the shorelines (coastal waves) and generalize the (linear) Stokes and Ursell waves. The waves we consider are periodic or close to periodic in time. The corresponding asymptotic solutions are represented in a parametric form based on the modification of the Carrier–Greenspan transformation and are generated by asymptotic eigenfunctions (quasimodes) of the operator , where is the gravity acceleration. These eigenfunctions are, in general, related to the trajectories of a Hamiltonian system with the Hamiltonian , which forms billiards with "semi-rigid walls." In the general case, the existence of such billiards assumes the integrability condition that is practically impossible to be satisfied in real situations. However, we consider a "degenerate" situation where the trajectories are localized in a very narrow vicinity of the boundary , and the asymptotic eigenfunctions resemble the well-known "whispering gallery" wave functions in acoustics. In this case, the requirement of integrability is eliminated (the corresponding billiard is "almost integrable" for the considered set of trajectories). One important difference between the problem we study and the classical whispering gallery situation is that, due to the degeneracy of the depth function on the boundary , the trajectories are always normal to the boundary, and the requirement of convexity of the domain of the considered problem is absent.

Existence of undercompressive travelling waves of a non-local generalised Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers equation

Abstract:We study travelling wave solutions of a generalised Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers equation with a non-local diffusion term and a concave-convex flux. This model equation arises in the analysis of a shallow water flow by performing formal asymptotic expansions associated to the triple-deck regularisation (which is an extension of classical boundary layer theory). The resulting non-local operator is a fractional type derivative with order between $1$ and $2$. Travelling wave solutions are typically analysed in relation to shock formation in the full shallow water problem. We show rigorously the existence of travelling waves that, formally, in the limit of vanishing diffusion and dispersion would give rise to non-classical shocks, that is, shocks that violate the Lax entropy condition. The proof is based on arguments that are typical in dynamical systems. The nature of the non-local operator makes this possible, since the resulting travelling wave equation can be seen as a delayed integro-differential equation. Thus, linearisation around critical points, continuity with respect to parameters and a shooting argument, are the main steps that we have proved and adapted for solving this problem.

Abstract:We consider the Klein--Gordon equation associated with the Laplace--Beltrami operator $\Delta$ on real hyperbolic spaces of dimension $n\!\ge\!2$; as $\Delta$ has a spectral gap, the wave equation is a particular case of our study. After a careful kernel analysis, we obtain dispersive and Strichartz estimates for a large family of admissible couples. As an application, we prove global well--posedness results for the corresponding semilinear equation with low regularity data.

Abstract:A continuous family of singular solitary waves exists in a prototypical system with intensity-dependent dispersion. The family has a cusped soliton as the limiting lowest energy state and is formed by the solitary waves with bell-shaped heads of different lengths. We show that this family can be obtained variationally by minimization of mass at fixed energy and fixed length of the bell-shaped head. We develop a weak formulation for the singular solitary waves and prove that they are stable under perturbations which do not change the length of the bell-shaped head. Numerical simulations confirm the stability of the singular solitary waves.

Abstract:We consider the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation $\partial_t u = -\partial_x(\partial_x^2 u + f(u))$, where $f(u)$ is an odd function of class $C^3$. Under some assumptions on $f$, this equation admits \emph{solitary waves}, that is solutions of the form $u(t, x) = Q_v(x - vt - x_0)$, for $v$ in some range $(0, v_*)$. We study pure two-solitons in the case of the same limit speed, in other words global solutions $u(t)$ such that \begin{equation} \label{eq:abstract} \tag{$\ast$} \lim_{t\to\infty}\|u(t) - (Q_v(\cdot - x_1(t)) \pm Q_v(\cdot - x_2(t)))\|_{H^1} = 0, \qquad \text{with}\quad\lim_{t \to \infty}x_2(t) - x_1(t) = \infty. \end{equation} Existence of such solutions is known for $f(u) = |u|^{p-1}u$ with $p \in \mathbb{Z} \setminus \{5\}$ and $p > 2$. We describe the~dynamical behavior of any solution satisfying \eqref{eq:abstract} under the assumption that $Q_v$ is linearly unstable (which corresponds to $p > 5$ for power nonlinearities). We prove that in this case the sign in \eqref{eq:abstract} is necessarily "$+$", which corresponds to an attractive interaction. We also prove that the~distance $x_2(t) - x_1(t)$ between the solitons equals $\frac{2}{\sqrt v}\log(\kappa t) + o(1)$ for some $\kappa = \kappa(v) > 0$.

A Direct Construction of Solitary Waves for a Fractional Korteweg-de Vries Equation With an Inhomogeneous Symbol

Abstract:We construct solitary waves for the fractional Korteweg-De Vries type equation $u_t + (\Lambda^{-s}u + u^2)_x = 0$, where $\Lambda^{-s}$ denotes the Bessel potential operator $(1 + |D|^2)^{-\frac{s}{2}}$ for $s \in (0,\infty)$. The approach is to parameterise the known periodic solution curves through the relative wave height. Using a priori estimates, we show that the periodic waves locally uniformly converge to waves with negative tails, which are transformed to the desired branch of solutions. The obtained branch reaches a highest wave, the behavior of which varies with $s$. The work is a generalisation of recent work by Ehrnström-Nik-Walker, and is as far as we know the first simultaneous construction of small, intermediate and highest solitary waves for the complete family of (inhomogeneous) fractional KdV equations with negative-order dispersive operators. The obtained waves display exponential decay rate as $|x| \to \infty$.

Abstract:We derive the Helmholtz--Korteweg equation, which models acoustic waves in Korteweg fluids. We further derive a nematic variant of the Helmholtz-Korteweg equation, which incorporates an additional orientational term in the stress tensor. Its dispersion relation coincides with that arising in Virga's analysis of the Euler-Korteweg equations, which we extend to consider imaginary wave numbers and the effect of boundary conditions. In particular, our extensions allow us to analyze the effect of nematic orientation on the penetration depth of evanescent plane waves, and on the scattering of sound waves by obstacles. Furthermore, we make new, experimentally-verifiable predictions for the effect of boundary conditions for a modification of the Mullen-Lüthi-Stephen experiment, and for the scattering of acoustic waves in nematic-Korteweg fluids by a circular obstacle.

Radiative tail of solitary waves in an extended Korteweg-de Vries equation

Abstract:We solve the fifth-order Korteweg-de Vries (fKdV) equation which is a modified KdV equation perturbed by a fifth-order derivative term multiplied by a small parameter $\epsilon^2$, with $0< \epsilon \ll 1$. Unlike the KdV equation, the stationary fKdV equation does not exhibit exactly localized 1-soliton solution, instead it allows a solution which has a well defined central core similar to that of the KdV 1-soliton solution, accompanied by extremely small oscillatory standing wave tails on both sides of the core. The amplitude of the standing wave tail oscillations is $\mathcal{O}(\exp(-1/\epsilon))$, i.e. it is beyond all orders small in perturbation theory. The analytical computation of the amplitude of these transcendentally small tail oscillations has been carried out up to $\mathcal{O}(\epsilon^5)$ order corrections by using the complex method of matched asymptotics. Also the long-standing discrepancy between the $\mathcal{O}(\epsilon^2)$ perturbative result of Grimshaw and Joshi (1995) and the numerical results of Boyd (1995) has been resolved. In addition to the stationary symmetric weakly localized solitary wave-like solutions, we analyzed the stationary asymmetric solutions of the fKdV equation which decay exponentially to zero on one side of the (slightly asymmetric) core and blows up to large negative values on other side of the core. The asymmetry is quantified by computing the third derivative of the solution at the origin which also turns out to be beyond all orders small in perturbation theory. The analytical computation of the third derivative of a function at the origin has also been carried out up to $\mathcal{O}(\epsilon^5)$ order corrections. We use the exponentially convergent pseudo-spectral method to solve the fKdV equation numerically. The analytical and the numerical results show remarkable agreement.

Abstract:We consider perturbations of the one-dimensional cubic Schrödinger equation, under the form $i \, \partial_t \psi + \partial_x^2 \psi + |\psi|^2 \psi - g( |\psi|^2 ) \psi = 0$. Under hypotheses on the function g that can be easily verified in some cases, we show that the linearized problem around a solitary wave does not have internal mode (nor resonance) and we prove the asymptotic stability of these solitary waves, for small frequencies.
