Abstract:Wireless Ad Hoc Networks have experienced great improvement over the past decade. However, IEEE 802.11 DCF, as the standard for Ad Hoc Networks, is still greatly influenced by hidden and exposed node problems. Lots of researches have been performed to solve them, but only a few of them have addressed the tradeoff between the two problems. This paper tries to balance the two problems by distributed terminal coordination. We will present two MAC schemes that import the concept of congestion control algorithms. A model between carrier sensing range and congestion window size is established. According to the simulation results, it is shown that these schemes can achieve good MAC layer performance in terms of one-hop throughput, fairness and speed of throughput convergence.
A New Scheme to Improve Fairness for Assured Service in Differentiated Services Network

Abstract:Issues related to fair sharing of bandwidth in Assured Forwarding based Differentiated Services networks have been discussed in many research papers. The factors that can bias fair sharing of bandwidth are Round trip time (RTT), packet size, the number of flows in aggregate and target rate etc. This paper proposes a new scheme to achieve proportional fair sharing of bandwidth among heterogeneous TCP flows for Assured Service. The Assured Services architecture relies on packet marking mechanism at the edge router, and AQM mechanism at the core router. In the new scheme the marking mechanism is FTSW2CM, which is based on TSW2CM algorithm. By measuring local throughput FTSW2CM can change the marking probability to achieve fairness. As to AQM mechanism we use MRIO algorithm, which can effectively stabilize the queue size and mitigate the "band-width skew" problem. The simulation results indicate that FTSW2CM+MRIO performs better than other popular schemes in providing fairness among heterogeneous TCP flows.

Abstract:Additive Increase Multiplicative Decrease (AIMD) window adjustment mechanism has been embedded in TCP in order to regulate the transmission rate in modern communication networks. In recent years, the AIMD (1,0.5) traffic regulation mechanism along with possibly additional enhancements, such as false timeout detection and explicit notification, has been considered in the carriers with Optical Burst Switching (OBS) as the underlying transmission technology. This paper introduces a novel rate control mechanism based on Generalized AIMD (alpha, beta), called Burst AIMD (BAIMD), for tuning the rate control parameters (alpha, beta) at each sender. BAIMD is designed to improve throughput while maintaining friendliness with co-existing AIMD (1,0.5) flows, and is characterized in the following two folds: (1) no burst window is required in the TCP sender's level; (2) no explicit notifications are required. The above characteristics make the proposed scheme distinguished from all the past reported counterparts by minimizing the signalling efforts and control complexity. The simulation result shows that BAIMD can solidly outperform the past reported AIMD-based (1,0.5) rate control schemes under a wide range of traffic loads. We also suggest that BAIMD rate control mechanism may serve as a better choice than AIMD (1,0.5) in the bufferless OBS networks due to its dynamic and flexible (alpha, beta) parameter pair.
A Modified Fair Aggregate Marking Algorithm in DiffServ

Abstract:With the emergence of network real time application, the need for quality of service (QoS) in the Internet has been given a rise. IETF has proposed a service model - DiffServ, which for its extensibility, has been widely accepted as a promising model. However, researchers found unfairness in DiffServ network. To solve this problem, this paper analyzed the inherent shortcomings of marker based on token bucket (TB) and time sliding window (TSW) in DiffServ, and proposed a new traffic rate estimator algorithm. This algorithm can tolerate the short-term burst of IP flows as well as reflecting the flows' temporal-behavior. Afterwards, a modified fair aggregate marking (MFAM) algorithm was presented based on the traffic rate estimator algorithm mentioned above. It contributes to fair sharing of excess bandwidth among aggregates. The author validated MFAM algorithm through simulation experimentation, and compared its performance with some other marking algorithms. The results show that MFAM algorithm has better fairness than others.

Abstract:The Additive-Increase Multiplicative-Decrease (AIMD) congestion control algorithm is approached from a variable structure control perspective, leading to a variant of this classical algorithm in which a (sliding) equilibrium can be attained, while giving preference to either fairness or full link utilization in the reaching phase. The price to be paid is that each source must have information on the sending or injection rates of its neighbor(s), in addition to the usual bit of information regarding congestion in the bottleneck link(s). Simulations are presented showing the improved responsiveness and smoothness of convergence of the injection rates to a fair, full utilization equilibrium in the presence of delays.

Abstract:Based on the inherent characteristic of the contention relationship between flows in Ad hoc networks,a notion of the link's interference set is introduced,it extends the multipath utility maximization formulating the congestion control problem for multipath routing in Internet to that in Ad hoc networks.As the objective function is not strictly concave in the path rate,the penalty function method is applied to transform the primal problem into a new formulation to obtain the optimal solution based on the subgradient method.And the multiPath congestion control algorithm(MPCC) is also proposed.It can be implemented in a parallel fashion at each source/link.Simulation results show that MPCC can quickly quickly converge to globally optimal solutions;and,compared to the additive-increase-multiplicative-decrease(AIMD) algorithm in TCP-Reno,MPCC is more adaptive to time-varying network situations,and achieves better network performance.And thus it can be used to the practical Ad hoc networks.

Abstract:In Ad Hoc networks, there exist two fundamental characteristics: Multi-Hop wireless-based transmission and node mobility. The former results in different contention relationship among flows from that in wireline networks, and the latter leads to the time-varying network situations. Firstly, on the basis of the link's interference set depicting the characteristics of the contention relationship, the congestion control problem for small time interval is formulated as a nonlinear optimization problem. Secondly, by using the dual decomposition theory, a price cooperation approach (PCA) is proposed to solve this optimization problem. In PCA, a price framework based on the link's interference set is built. Meanwhile, to implement PCA in realistic ad hoc environment, three deployment techniques are proposed: Queue Size Monitoring, Neighbor Set Approximation, and HELLO-based Message Piggybacking. Otherwise, the network status detection and receding optimization is introduced to deal with the uncertain changes of network situations, and an adaptive optimization strategy (AOS) is proposed correspondingly. The simulation results in MATLAB environment show that AOS has better performance of adaptation to time-varying network situations than PCA. The simulation result in NS2 environment show that PCA and PCA+AOS significantly outperform TCP, ATCP, and ATP in many important performances, including throughput, packet drop ratio, and fairness, under a variety of scenarios and mobility models.

Abstract:The Chiu-Jain or additive-increase multiplicative-decrease (AIMD) congestion control algorithm is approached from a variable structure control perspective, leading to a better understanding and consequently a new choice of parameters of this classical algorithm. This new parameter choice, in the absence of delays, ensure that the users' injection rates always attain a neighborhood of the fair, full-capacity equilibrium with enhanced smoothness and responsiveness, using only one bit of information, as well as knowledge of the fair share. If the fair share is unknown, an adaptive scheme that overcomes this lack of information is proposed. Simulations show that the proposed choice can result in convergence of the injection rates to a fair, full utilization equilibrium, while maintaining improved responsiveness and smoothness, in the presence of delays that are not too large.

Abstract:It is a key subject for layered multicast congestion control to promise fair bandwidth sharing. An AIMD-based congestion control algorithm for layered multicast is presented. The algorithm makes use of the AIMD algorithm, which is proved to have good TCP-compatibility and stability. To prevent rate oscillation by halving the sending rate in TCP. the algorithm adapts the principle of slow-increase and slow-decrease. We present a new feedback-free method for multicast receivers to estimate their round-trip time to the sender. which avoids complexity and scalability of feedback processing. A slow-start mechanism like TCP is adapted to promote bandwidth utilization and rate convergence. The simulation evaluations show that the algorithm achieves fair congestion control between TCP flows and multicast flows. and his high bandwidth utilization and good stability.
An Analytical Study on TCP-friendly Congestion Control for Multimedia Streams.

Abstract:The TCP-style AIMD congestion control principle can’t meet the need of the upcoming multimedia applications. They demand smooth adjustment and congestion aware, thus recently many works design TCPfriendly congestion control algorithms. In this paper, we focus on understanding one class of TCP-friendly congestion control algorithms, adjustment-based congestion control, which adjust transmission rate when loss is detected and can generalize TCP-style additive-increase by increasing inversely proportional to a power k of the current window (for TCP, k=0) and generalize TCP-style multiplicative-decrease by decreasing proportional to a power l of the current window (for TCP, l=1). We discuss their global fairness and stability. We prove that such class of congestion control algorithms can achieve (p, k+l+1)- proportional fairness globally no matter the network topology is and how many users there are. We also study their dynamical behaviors through a control theoretical approach. The smoothness of the congestion control will result in a less stable system and slower convergence to the fair bandwidth allocation. The modeling and discussions in this paper are quite general and can be easily applied to equation-based TCP-friendly congestion control scheme, another category of TCP-friendly transport protocols.

Abstract:For the design of a more efficient congestion control algorithm to optimize the resource allocation in Ad Hoc networks, the notion of the link's interference set is introduced to represent the contention relationship among flows in Ad Hoc networks, which is the fundamental difference from the contention relationship among flows in Internet. And the congestion control problem is formulated as a nonlinear optimization problem with the capacity constraint of the link's interference set. Then, based on the dual decomposition method, this problem is decomposed into many subproblems, which can be solved independently in a parallel fashion at each source/link, and builds the Dual Decomposition based Optimal and Fair Congestion Control framework (D^2OFC^2) to coordinate their source allocation among flows. Considering the synchronous implementation is difficult in realistic environment, the asynchronous implementation of D^2OFC^2 is presented. To deploy the practical protocol of D^2OFC^2, three deployment techniques are proposed: Queue Size Estimation method (QSE), Neighbor Set Approximation method (NSA), and Extensive HELLO message-based Piggybacking (EHP).The MATLAB-based simulation results illustrate that D^2OFC^2 can approach the globally optimal solution even in asynchronous environment. The NS2-based simulation results demonstrate that D^2OFC^2 outperforms default TCP and ATCP to achieve an efficient and fair resource allocation in Ad Hoc networks under three scenarios, including chain topology, grid topology, and random topology.

Abstract:Delay-based congestion control algorithms provide higher throughput and stability than traditional loss-based AIMD algorithms, but they are inherently unfair against older connections when the queuing and the propagation delay cannot be measured accurately and independently. This paper presents a novel measurement algorithm whereby fairness between old and new connections is preserved. The algorithm does not modify the dynamics of congestion control, and runs entirely in the server host using locally available information.

Revisiting Weighted AIMD-based Congestion Control: A Comprehensive Perspective.

Abstract:Weighted congestion control aims to provide end-to-end differentiated bandwidth allocation. MulTCP and EWTCP are two closely related schemes for this purpose and they both want to achieve weighted proportionality through modifying AIMD behaviors. In this paper, we revisit the performance of MulTCP and EWTCP in terms of weighted proportionality. Through testbed experiments, we reveal a lot of counter-intuitive phenomena for achieving weighted proportionality — the switch buffer size, propagation delay and ACK options have a dominant impact on the weighted proportionality. Specifically, we develop WCC, a fundamental weighted AIMD-based congestion control building block, which can be implemented via individually modifying AI (WCC-AI) or MD (WCC-MD) behavior. We analyze WCC using extended fluid models, NS3 simulations and Linux kernel implementations with droptail and RED queues, and point out the determinant of performance. Finally, we clarify the influences of dynamic network characteristics on weighted proportionality with sufficient experimental results and summarize a basic law of how to implement weighted AIMD-based congestion control.

Abstract:This paper views the classical Chiu-Jain algorithm, originally proposed for congestion control of network links, as a decentralized algorithm for the fair allocation of a total of c units of a shared resource among n users. A new analysis is given of the general case of additive increase and multiplicative decrease AIMD dynamics, from the perspective of virtual equilibria and variable structure systems, leading to a better understanding of the Chiu-Jain algorithm, which is one example of AIMD dynamics. It is shown that the variable structure discrete dynamical system that describes the evolution of the share of each individual, starting from an arbitrary initial allocation, always attains a neighbourhood of the fair share c/n for each user, under the assumption that the latter is known. Subsequently, a new adaptive version of the algorithm, called adaptive AIMD, is described, with the same property of converging to the fair share, without assuming that it is known. Simulations that show the behaviour and advantages of the proposed adaptive AIMD adaptive algorithm are given. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
Robustifying Measurement-Based Congestion Control Algorithms

Abstract:The design methodology of congestion control algorithms (CCAs) has shifted from control-based to measurement-based in recent years. However, we find that measurement-based CCAs, although having better performance, are not robust enough in fluctuating network environments, which are increasingly common nowadays. In this paper, we propose PAD to make measurement-based CCAs as robust as control-based CCAs in fluctuating environments while enjoying the performance benefits in general. PAD identifies that the root cause is that measurement-based CCAs blindly rely on measurement results, which unfortunately can be inaccurate, and will transiently mislead the CCAs to misbehave. The preliminary design of PAD works as a shim layer between the socket and CCAs so as to scale to any measurement-based CCAs, which turns out to outperform most commonly used CCAs in fluctuating environments.

Abstract:Transmission Communication Protocol (TCP) is responsible for reliable transferring of heavy traffic of data over the Internet. Congestion control is one of the main challenges for TCP in today's Internet. TCP Tahoe and TCP Reno are the oldest versions of TCP, proposed to solve the congestion issues. With the passage of time, different versions of TCPs are introduced to fulfill the network demands. TCP Compound, TCP CUBIC, and TCP Fusion are the default TCP versions in Microsoft Windows, Linux and Sun Solaris operating systems respectively. TCP CUBIC is designed for early, low bandwidth, short distance networks that are why it is facing fairness, TCP friendliness issues in today's long distance high bandwidth Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). In this paper, TCP CUBIC* is proposed to enhance the performance of TCP CUBIC in long distance, high bandwidth CPS. Thus, the aim of this research is to enhance the performance of TCP CUBIC to solve the fairness and TCP friendliness issues for high bandwidth, long distance CPS. NS-2 simulator is used in all performance evaluation tests. According to results, TCP CUBIC* shows better performance results as compared to original TCP CUBIC.

RTS/CTS mechanism with refined adaptive contention window for distributed coordination function in IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol

Abstract:The basic MAC technique of IEEE 802.11 is called DCF, and optional RTS/CTS access technique is defined to improve the system performance, and which is proven that, the RTS/CTS mechanism is superior in most of the cases. In this paper, we refine RTS/CTS scheme with an ACW algorithm to reduce the collision probability of RTS, by means of adapting the CW dynamically according to the collision of RTS. Our simulations indicate that our refined scheme can achieve high performance in DCF, and even higher performance especially in QoS Enhanced EDCF proposal.

Abstract:ATM networks oriented connections provide pure QoS (quality of service) for diversified services through a series of traffic management mechanisms, the ABR (available bit rate) flow control is especially important among these approaches. In the binary flow control scheme, the cell rate and queue length may oscillate with great magnitude to reduce link utilization, so that the EFCI (explicit forward congestion indication) algorithm is regard as ineffective, however its simplicity is attractive to high performance switch design. In this paper, the EFCI algorithm is analyzed based on classical control theory. It is found that the nonlinear hysteresis determines the congestion, and is the dominant reason that causes the oscillation. Then, a probability congestion detection approach, called p-EFCI is put forward. Numerical results show that the improved algorithm deeply constrains the oscillation magnitude, and the queue length is controlled in limited scope to guarantee cell zero loss

Abstract:As named data networking (NDN) continues to evolve into a mature and production network, a robust and efficient congestion control mechanism has become a fundamental requirement for the success and wide deployment of NDN. In this paper, upon exploring the unique hop-by-hop Interest forwarding feature, based on the CUBIC, we develop a novel congestion control mechanism for NDN. Our congestion control mechanism, namely EC-CUBIC, borrows the core idea of CUBIC to control the sending rate of interest packets on consumers. Specially, in routers, we queue the data packets in every face and according to the queue length to send a congestion signal to consumers, upon which consumers take action timely for the congestion. In addition, we implement this mechanism in ndnSIM, an NS3-based simulator, and conduct a number of experiments with various settings to evaluate the link utilization and packets-drop rate of the proposed algorithm. Comparing with the naive congestion control algorithm in NDN, our experimental results demonstrate that EC-CUBIC perform bette in terms of high link utilization and low packets-drop rate.

Abstract:The current stability of the Internet depends on the end-to-end congestion control of TCP based on the Additive Increase Multiplicative Decrease (AIMD) algorithms. The current TCP congestion control is appropriate for applications such as bulk data transfer, but not for real-time applications as multimedia communications. Most of existing congestion control works are suitable for the best effort flows, but not for the flows with QoS requirements. In this paper, the congestion control issue of different classes of data flows in the Internet between sender and receiver is investigated. By adopting equation-based rate control (EBRC) for differentiated services instead of traditional TCP congestion control for best-effort service, a new congestion control mechanism for multimedia communications with QoS requirements can be achieved. A dynamic partial buffer sharing scheme (DPBS) for packet loss control and a method of calculating the packet loss rate by receiver are proposed. Finally, the system architecture of the new congestion control mechanism is described.
