Abstract:Recently, A. Vasseur and C. Yu have proved the existence of global entropy-weak solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with viscosities $\nu(\varrho)=\mu\varrho$ and $\lambda(\varrho)=0$ and a pressure law under the form $p(\varrho)=a\varrho^\gamma$ with $a>0$ and $\gamma>1$ constants. In this note, we propose a non-trivial relative entropy for such system in a periodic box and give some applications. This extends, in some sense, results with constant viscosities initiated by E. Feiersl, B.J. Jin and A. Novotny. We present some mathematical results related to the weak-strong uniqueness, convergence to a dissipative solution of compressible or incompressible Euler equations. As a by-product, this mathematically justifies the convergence of solutions of a viscous shallow water system to solutions of the inviscid shall-water system.

Abstract:Compressible (full) potential flow is expressed as an equivalent first-order system of conservation laws for density and velocity v. Energy E is shown to be the only nontrivial entropy for that system in multiple space dimensions, and it is strictly convex in ρ,v if and only if |v|<c. For motivation some simple variations on the relative entropy theme of Dafermos/DiPerna are given, for example that smooth regions of weak entropy solutions shrink at finite speed, and that smooth solutions force solutions of singular entropy-compatible perturbations to converge to them. We conjecture that entropy weak solutions of compressible potential flow are unique, in contrast to the known counterexamples for the Euler equations.

Abstract:We consider a flow of a non-Newtonian heat conducting incompressible fluid in a bounded domain subjected to the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition for the velocity field and the Dirichlet boundary condition for the temperature. In three dimensions, for a power-law index greater or equal to [Formula: see text], we show the existence of a solution fulfilling the entropy equality. The entropy equality can be formally deduced from the energy equality by renormalization. However, such a procedure can be justified by the DiPerna-Lions theory only for [Formula: see text]. The main novelty is that we do not renormalize the temperature equation, but rather construct a solution which fulfils the entropy equality. Abstract:This study extends entropy scaling to inhomogeneous fluids by using the classical density functional theory together with a new viscosity reference that takes into account the influence of solid–fluid interactions on the fluid viscosity. The density functional theory uses a Helmholtz energy functional based on the perturbed-chain statistical associating fluid theory; the local residual entropy per particle is determined from the temperature derivative of the Helmholtz energy functional in combination with an appropriate weighted density profile. The weighted density calculation requires a single transferable parameter, which is adjusted to a reference molecular dynamics simulation. In particular, local viscosity values for fluids under nanoconfinement near solid–fluid interfaces are predicted using the same entropy scaling parameters as for homogeneous fluids. We validate the model by comparing viscosity and velocity profiles with results from non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations of a Couette flow in a slit pore. Good agreement is found between the entropy scaling model and the non-equilibrium molecular dynamics results for both the viscosity and velocity profiles of the Lennard–Jones truncated and shifted fluid. The proposed model extrapolates well to systems with different temperatures, fluid densities, and shear forces as well as to systems with different wetting behaviors. These results demonstrate that entropy scaling can be generalized to inhomogeneous fluids using an appropriate combination of residual entropy profile and viscosity reference.

Relative Energy Method For Weak-Strong Uniqueness Of The Inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes Equations

Abstract:We present a weak-strong uniqueness result for the inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes (INS) equations in $\mathbb{R}^d$ ($d=2,3$) for bounded initial densities that are far from vacuum. Given a strong solution within the class employed in Paicu, Zhang and Zhang (2013) and Chen, Zhang and Zhao (2016), and a Leray-Hopf weak solution, we establish that they coincide if the initial data agree. The strategy of our proof is based on the relative energy method and new $W^{-1,p}$-type stability estimates for the density. A key point lies in proving that every Leray-Hopf weak solution originating from initial densities far from vacuum remains distant from vacuum at all times.

Abstract:This paper presents a systematic study of the relative entropy technique for compressible motions of continuum bodies described as Hamiltonian flows. While the description for the classical mechanics of $N$ particles involves a Hamiltonian in terms of position and momentum vectors, that for the continuum fluid involves a Hamiltonian in terms of density and momentum. For space dimension $d\ge 2$, the Hamiltonian functional has a non-convex dependency on the deformation gradient or placement map due to material frame indifference. Because of this, the applicability of the relative entropy technique with respect to the deformation gradient or the placement map is inherently limited. Despite these limitations, we delineate the feasible applications and limitations of the technique by pushing it to its available extent. Specifically, we derive the relative Hamiltonian identity, where the Hamiltonian takes the position and momentum field as its primary and conjugate state variables, all within the context of the referential coordinate system that describes the motion.

The Shear Viscosity to Entropy Ratio: A Status Report

Abstract:This review highlights some of the lessons that the holographic gauge/gravity duality has taught us regarding the behavior of the shear viscosity to entropy density in strongly coupled field theories. The viscosity to entropy ratio has been shown to take on a very simple universal value in all gauge theories with an Einstein gravity dual. Here we describe the origin of this universal ratio, and focus on how it is modified by generic higher derivative corrections corresponding to curvature corrections on the gravity side of the duality. In particular, certain curvature corrections are known to push the viscosity to entropy ratio below its universal value. This disproves a longstanding conjecture that such a universal value represents a strict lower bound for any fluid in nature. We discuss the main developments that have led to insight into the violation of this bound, and consider whether the consistency of the theory is responsible for setting a fundamental lower bound on the viscosity to entropy ratio.

Abstract:Abstract In the present work, we consider the evolution of two fluids separated by a sharp interface in the presence of surface tension—like, for example, the evolution of oil bubbles in water. Our main result is a weak–strong uniqueness principle for the corresponding free boundary problem for the incompressible Navier–Stokes equation: as long as a strong solution exists, any varifold solution must coincide with it. In particular, in the absence of physical singularities, the concept of varifold solutions—whose global in time existence has been shown by Abels (Interfaces Free Bound 9(1):31–65, 2007) for general initial data—does not introduce a mechanism for non-uniqueness. The key ingredient of our approach is the construction of a relative entropy functional capable of controlling the interface error. If the viscosities of the two fluids do not coincide, even for classical (strong) solutions the gradient of the velocity field becomes discontinuous at the interface, introducing the need for a careful additional adaption of the relative entropy.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a singular limit problem for a diffuse interface model for two immiscible compressible viscous fluids. Via a relative entropy method, we obtain a convergence result for the low Mach number limit to a corresponding system for incompressible fluids in the case of well-prepared initial data and same densities in the limit.

The two fluids are assumed to be immiscible, meaning that they are separated by an interface. With respect to the motion of the interface, we consider pure transport by the fluid flow. Along the boundary of the domain, a complete slip boundary condition for the fluid velocities and a constant ninety degree contact angle condition for the interface are assumed. The main result of the present work establishes in 2D a weak-strong uniqueness result in terms of a varifold solution concept à la Abels (Interfaces Free Bound. 9, 2007). The proof is based on a relative entropy argument. More precisely, we extend ideas from the recent work of Fischer and the first author (Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 236, 2020) to incorporate the contact angle condition. To focus on the effects of the necessarily singular geometry, we work for simplicity in the regime of same viscosities for the two fluids.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to derive anisotropic mean curvature flow as the limit of the anisotropic Allen–Cahn equation. We rely on distributional solution concepts for both the diffuse and sharp interface models and prove convergence using relative entropy methods, which have recently proven to be a powerful tool in interface evolution problems. With the same relative entropy, we prove a weak–strong uniqueness result, which relies on the construction of gradient flow calibrations for our anisotropic energy functionals.

Abstract:Here, we consider anisotropic degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic equations and degenerate quasilinear Hamilton-Jacobi equations. We prove the equivalence of two notions of entropy and viscosity solutions of two equations, and apply it to obtain a large-time behavior of viscosity solutions to quasilinear Hamilton-Jacobi equations, and entropy solutions to degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic equations in a periodic setting.

Abstract:We consider the Navier-Stokes equations with a pressure function satisfying a hard-sphere law. That means the pressure, as a function of the density, becomes infinite when the density approaches a finite critical value. Under some structural constraints imposed on the pressure law, we show a weak-strong uniqueness principle in periodic spatial domains. The method is based on a modified relative entropy inequality for the system. The main difficulty is that the pressure potential associated with the internal energy of the system is largely dominated by the pressure itself in the area close to the critical density. As a result, several terms appearing in the relative energy inequality cannot be controlled by the total energy.

Abstract:We study the vanishing viscosity/diffusivity limit for the transport equation of a passive scalar $f(x,t)\in\mathbb{R}$ along a divergence-free vector field $u(x,t)\in\mathbb{R}^2$, given by $\frac{\partial f}{\partial t} + \nabla\cdot (u f) = 0$; and the associated advection-diffusion equation of $f$ along $u$ for positive viscosity/diffusivity parameter $\nu>0$, expressed by $\frac{\partial f}{\partial t} + \nabla\cdot (u f) -\nu\Delta f = 0$. We demonstrate failure of the vanishing viscosity limit of the advection-diffusion equation to select unique solutions, or to select entropy-admissible solutions, to transport along $u$. First, we construct a bounded divergence-free vector field $u$ which admits, for each (non-constant) initial datum, two weak solutions to the initial value problem for the transport equation. Moreover, we show that both these solutions are renormalised weak solutions, and are strong limits along different subsequences of vanishing viscosity of solutions to the corresponding advection-diffusion equation. Second, we construct a second bounded divergence-free vector field $u$ admitting, for any initial datum, a weak solution to the transport equation which is perfectly mixed to its spatial average, and after some delay in time, it unmixes to its initial state. Moreover, we show that this entropy-inadmissible unmixing is the unique weak vanishing viscosity limit of the corresponding advection-diffusion equation.

Abstract:The relative entropy of entanglement $E_R$ is defined as the distance of a multi-partite quantum state from the set of separable states as measured by the quantum relative entropy. We show that this optimisation is always achieved, i.e. any state admits a closest separable state, even in infinite dimensions; also, $E_R$ is everywhere lower semi-continuous. We use this to derive a dual variational expression for $E_R$ in terms of an external supremum instead of infimum. These results, which seem to have gone unnoticed so far, hold not only for the relative entropy of entanglement and its multi-partite generalisations, but also for many other similar resource quantifiers, such as the relative entropy of non-Gaussianity, of non-classicality, of Wigner negativity $\unicode{8212}$ more generally, all relative entropy distances from the sets of states with non-negative $\lambda$-quasi-probability distribution. The crucial hypothesis underpinning all these applications is the weak*-closedness of the cone generated by free states, and for this reason the techniques we develop involve a bouquet of classical results from functional analysis. We complement our analysis by giving explicit and asymptotically tight continuity estimates for $E_R$ and closely related quantities in the presence of an energy constraint.

Abstract:We prove the uniqueness and stability of entropy shocks to the isentropic Euler systems among all vanishing viscosity limits of solutions to associated Navier–Stokes systems. To take into account the vanishing viscosity limit, we show a contraction property for any large perturbations of viscous shocks to the Navier–Stokes system. The contraction estimate does not depend on the strength of the viscosity. This provides a good control on the inviscid limit process. We prove that, for any initial value, there exist a vanishing viscosity limit to solutions of the Navier–Stokes system. The convergence holds in a weak topology. However, this limit satisfies some stability estimates measured by the relative entropy with respect to an entropy shock. In particular, our result provides the uniqueness of entropy shocks to the shallow water equation in a class of inviscid limits of solutions to the viscous shallow water equations.

Abstract:We consider gradient estimates to positive solutions of porous medium equations and fast diffusion equations: $$u_t=\Delta_\phi(u^p)$$ associated with the Witten Laplacian on Riemannian manifolds. Under the assumption that the $m$-dimensional Bakry-Emery Ricci curvature is bounded from below, we obtain gradient estimates which generalize the results in [20] and [13]. Moreover, inspired by X. -D. Li's work in [19] we also study the entropy formulae introduced in [20] for porous medium equations and fast diffusion equations associated with the Witten Laplacian.
