Abstract:We construct an open set of endomorphisms of an arbitrary two-dimensional manifold which have attractors and non-wandering sets with non-invariant interior. This is a notable contrast to the properties of diffeomorphisms, where the interior must be invariant.

Abstract:In this paper we consider an -stable 3-diffeomorphism whose chain-recurrent set consists of isolated periodic points and hyperbolic 2-dimensional nontrivial attractors. Nontrivial attractors in this case can only be expanding, orientable or not. The most known example from the class under consideration is the DA-diffeomorphism obtained from the algebraic Anosov diffeomorphism, given on a 3-torus, by Smale's surgery. Each such attractor has bunches of degree 1 and 2. We estimate the minimum number of isolated periodic points using information about the structure of attractors. Also, we investigate the topological structure of ambient manifolds for diffeomorphisms with k bunches and k isolated periodic points.

Abstract:We study the fine scaling properties of sets satisfying various weak forms of invariance. For general attractors of possibly overlapping bi-Lipschitz iterated function systems, we establish that the Assouad dimension is given by the Hausdorff dimension of a tangent at some point in the attractor. Under the additional assumption of self-conformality, we moreover prove that this property holds for a subset of full Hausdorff dimension.

Abstract:We deal with the finite family $\mathcal{F}$ of continuous maps on the Hausdorff space. A nonempty compact subset $A$ of such space is called a strict attractor if it has an open neighborhood $U$ such that $A=\lim_{n\to\infty}\mathcal{F}^n(S)$ for every nonempty compact $S\subset U$. Every strict attractor is a pointwise attractor, which means that the set $\{x\in X ; \lim_{n\to\infty}\mathcal{F}^n(x)=A\}$ contains $A$ in its interior. We present a class of examples of pointwise attractors - from the finite set to the Sierpiński carpet - which are not strict when we add to the system one nonexpansive map.

Dimension Paradox of Irrationally Indifferent Attractors

Abstract:In this paper we study the geometry of the attractors of holomorphic maps with an irrationally indifferent fixed point. We prove that for an open set of such holomorphic systems, the local attractor at the fixed point has Hausdorff dimension two, provided the asymptotic rotation at the fixed point is of sufficiently high type and does not belong to Herman numbers. As an immediate corollary, the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set of any such rational map with a Cremer fixed point is equal to two. Moreover, we show that for a class of asymptotic rotation numbers, the attractor satisfies Karpinska's dimension paradox. That is, the the set of end points of the attractor has dimension two, but without those end points, the dimension drops to one.

Abstract:Iterated function systems (IFSs) and their attractors have been central to the theory of fractal geometry almost from its inception. Moreover, contractivity of the functions in the IFS has been central to the theory of iterated functions systems. If the functions in the IFS are contractions, then the IFS is guaranteed to have a unique attractor. The converse question, does the existence of an attractor imply that the IFS is contractive, originates in a 1959 work by Bessaga which proves a converse to the contraction mapping theorem. Although a converse is true in that case, it is known that it does not always hold for an IFS. In general, there do exist IFSs with attractors and which are not contractive. However, in the context of IFSs in Euclidean space, this question has been open. In this paper we show that a highly non-contractive iterated function system in Euclidean space can have an attractor. In order to do that, we introduce the concept of an L -expansive map, i.e., a map that has Lipschitz constant strictly greater than one under any remetrization. This is necessitated by the absence of positively expansive maps on the interval.

Abstract:We prove a theorem on structural stability of smooth attractor-repellor endomorphisms of compact manifolds, with singularities. By attractor-repellor, we mean that the non-wandering set of the dynamics $f$ is the disjoint union of a repulsive compact subset with a hyperbolic attractor on which $f$ acts bijectively. The statement of this result is both infinitesimal and dynamical. Up to our knowledge, this is the first in this hybrid direction. Our results generalize also a Mather's theorem in singularity theory which states that infinitesimal stability implies structural stability for composed mappings, to the larger category of laminations.

Abstract: Let $(K_1,\ldots,K_n)$ be a Cantor type graph-directed attractors in $\mathbb{R}^d$. By creating an auxiliary graph, we provide an effective criterion of whether $K_i\cap K_j$ is empty for every pair of $1\leq i,j\leq n$. Moreover, the emptiness can be checked by examining only a finite number of the attractor's geometric approximations. The method is also applicable for more general graph-directed systems. As an application, we are able to determine the connectedness of all $d$-dimensional generalized Sierpi\'nski sponges of which the corresponding IFSs are allowed to have rotational and reflectional components.

Abstract:The present paper is devoted to a study of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms on three-dimensional manifolds with a non-wandering set consisting of a finite number of surface attractors and repellers. The main results of the paper relate to a class of homeomorphisms for which the restriction of the map to a connected component of the non-wandering set is topologically conjugate to an orientation-preserving pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism. The ambient -conjugacy of a homeomorphism from the class with a locally direct product of a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism and a rough transformation of the circle is proved. In addition, we prove that the centralizer of a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms consists of only pseudo-Anosov and periodic maps.

On existence of expanding attractors with different dimensions

Abstract:We prove that $n$-sphere $\mathbb{S}^n$, $n\geq 2$, admits structurally stable diffeomorphisms $\mathbb{S}^n\to\mathbb{S}^n$ with non-orientable expanding attractors of any topological dimension $d\in\{1,\ldots,[\frac{n}{2}]\}$ where $[x]$ is an integer part of $x$. One proves that $n$-torus $\mathbb{T}^n$, $n\geq 2$, admits structurally stable diffeomorphisms $\mathbb{T}^n\to\mathbb{T}^n$ with orientable expanding attractors of any topological dimension $1\leq q\leq n-1$. We also prove that given any closed $n$-manifold $M^n$, $n\geq 2$, and any $d\in\{1,\ldots,[\frac{n}{2}]\}$, there is an axiom A diffeomorphism $f: M^n\to M^n$ with a $d$-dimensional non-orientable expanding attractor. Similar statements hold for axiom A flows.

Abstract:We introduce a class of J-like compacts of the plane with the property that either any non-trivial local holomorphic family of symmetries of such compact is finite or the compact is locally "laminar". The proof repeats the one for the Julia set. Apart of Julia sets, this class includes attractors of holomorphic iterated function systems with the strong separation condition. Abstract:The set of nonzero external forces for which the zero function is in the global attractor of the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations is shown to be meagre in a Frechet topology. A criterion in terms of a Taylor expansion in complex time is used to characterize the forces in this set. This leads to several relations between certain Gevrey subclasses of C-infinity and a new upper bound for a Gevrey norm of solutions in the attractor, valid in the strip of analyticity in time.

Abstract:Using alternating Heegaard diagrams, we construct some 3-manifolds which admit diffeomorphisms such that the non-wandering sets of the diffeomorphisms are composed of Smale-Williams solenoid attractors and repellers. An interesting example is the truncated-cube space. In addition, we prove that if the non-wandering set of the diffeomorphism consists of genus two Smale-Williams solenoids, then the Heegaard genus of the closed manifold is at most two.

Abstract:The dynamics of a dissipative and area contracting planar homeomorphism were described in terms of the attractor. This was a subset of the plane defined as the maximal compact invariant set. We proved that the coexistence of two fixed points and an -cycle produced some topological complexity: the attractor cannot be arcwise connected. The proofs were based on the theory of prime ends.

Abstract:We present some rigorous results on the absence of a wide class of invariant measures for dynamical systems possessing attractors. We then consider a generalization of the classical nonholonomic Suslov problem which shows how previous investigations of existence of invariant measures for nonholonomic systems should necessarily be extended beyond the class of measures with strictly positive $C^1$ densities if one wishes to determine dynamical obstructions to the presence of attractors.

Abstract:We generalize the Lozi-like family introduced in Misiurewicz and Štimac work from 2017. The generalized Lozi-like family encompasses in particular certain Lozi-like maps, orientation preserving or reversing Lozi maps or large parameter regions of 2-dimensional border collision normal forms. We prove that it possesses a strange attractor, arising as a homoclinic class.
