Abstract:The nature of dark matter is still unknown and an experimental program to look for dark matter particles in our Galaxy should extend its sensitivity to light particles in the GeV mass range and exploit the directional information of the DM particle motion. The CYGNO project is studying a gaseous time projection chamber operated at atmospheric pressure with a Gas Electron Multiplier amplification and with an optical readout as a promising technology for light dark matter and directional searches. In this paper we describe the operation of a 50 liter prototype named LIME (Long Imaging ModulE) in an overground location at Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati of INFN. This prototype employs the technology under study for the 1 cubic meter CYGNO demonstrator to be installed at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. We report the characterization of LIME with photon sources in the energy range from few keV to several tens of keV to understand the performance of the energy reconstruction of the emitted electron. We achieved a low energy threshold of few keV and an energy resolution over the whole energy range of 10-20%, while operating the detector for several weeks continuously with very high operational efficiency. The energy spectrum of the reconstructed electrons is then reported and will be the basis to identify radio-contaminants of the LIME materials to be removed for future CYGNO detectors.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore a new detector technology for searching for light - mass dark matter particles (at the GeV scale and below), and use directional information to improve the detection efficiency. Specifically, the Cygno project is researching a gaseous Time Projection Chamber (TPC) operating at atmospheric pressure, using Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) to amplify signals and adopting an optical read - out method. This technology is particularly suitable for the search for light - mass dark matter and directional detection. ### Background and Objectives of the Paper The existence of dark matter (DM) is a fundamental problem in cosmology and astrophysics. It accounts for most of the mass - energy components in the universe, but its nature remains unknown. Traditional dark matter candidates - Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) - have been widely studied, but experiments have not yet directly detected these particles. Therefore, expanding the experimental sensitivity to the lower - mass range (such as GeV and below) of dark matter particles has become an important direction in current research. ### The Cygno Project The Cygno project aims to develop a new - type detector based on a gaseous TPC, which can work at atmospheric pressure and has an optical read - out function. The characteristics of this detector include: - **High Sensitivity**: It can detect low - energy electrons (several keV) and nuclear recoils. - **Directionality**: By reconstructing the direction of recoiling particles, it can better distinguish dark matter signals from other background sources. - **Large - scale**: It is planned to construct a 30 - 100 cubic - meter detector to increase the target mass and improve the detection efficiency. ### The LIME Prototype To verify the feasibility of the Cygno project, researchers have constructed a 50 - liter prototype detector called LIME (Long Imaging ModulE). The main features of LIME include: - **Gas Mixture**: It uses a He/CF4 gas mixture with a ratio of 60/40. - **GEM Amplification**: It adopts a triple - GEM system for signal amplification. - **Optical Read - out**: It uses a scientific - grade CMOS camera and four photomultiplier tubes (PMT) to read the optical signals. ### Experimental Results The LIME prototype has carried out long - term data collection on the ground. The main purposes are: - **Long - term Stability**: To evaluate the long - term operational stability of the detector. - **Image Analysis**: To develop image - processing techniques for identifying and analyzing electron recoils caused by photons. - **Energy Response**: To characterize the detector's response to photons of different energies, especially in the range from several keV to several tens of keV. ### Key Findings - **Low - energy Threshold**: LIME has achieved a low - energy threshold of several keV. - **Energy Resolution**: The energy resolution is 10 - 20% across the entire energy range. - **Background Analysis**: Through the analysis of background events, possible radioactive pollution sources have been identified, providing a reference for the future design of the Cygno detector. ### Conclusion The successful operation of the LIME prototype has proven that the technical route of the Cygno project is feasible, especially in the detection of low - energy electron recoils and directional reconstruction. This lays the foundation for the construction of a larger - scale Cygno detector in the future and is expected to achieve a breakthrough in the search for light - mass dark matter.
