Abstract:In this work, we propose an UAV-aided Integrated Access and Backhaul (IAB) system design offering 5G connectivity to ground users. UAV is integrated with a distributed unit (DU) acting as an aerial DU, which can provide 5G wireless backhaul access to a terrestrial central unit (CU). The CU-DU interface fully complies with the 3GPP defined F1 application protocol (F1AP). Such aerial DU can be instantiated and configured dynamically, tailoring to the network demands. The complete radio and access network solution is based on open-source software from OpenAirInterface (OAI) and off-the-shelf commercial 5G mobile terminals. Experimental results illustrate throughput gains and coverage extension brought by the aerial DU.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to provide wireless connections for terrestrial users in the 5G network through the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) - assisted Integrated Access and Backhaul (IAB) system. Specifically, the paper proposes a design scheme using UAVs as Distributed Units (DUs), which can provide 5G wireless backhaul access for Centralized Units (CUs) on the ground. This design aims to utilize the three - dimensional mobility capabilities of UAVs to achieve flexible radio network deployment, especially to provide rapidly responsive network services in scenarios such as tactical networks, disaster recovery, and search - and - rescue operations. The key points of the paper include: 1. **Integration of UAVs and 5G Networks**: The paper describes how to integrate UAVs with the CU and DU interfaces in the 5G network to provide flexible network coverage and enhanced communication capabilities. 2. **Open Interfaces and End - to - End Programmability**: The paper emphasizes the necessity of open interfaces and end - to - end programmability in the 5G network, which enables DUs and RUs to be dynamically instantiated and configured according to network requirements. 3. **Experimental Verification**: The authors build a complete radio and access network solution based on the OpenAirInterface (OAI) software and commercial 5G mobile terminals, and show the throughput gain and coverage expansion brought by the aerial DU through experimental results. 4. **Innovation**: As far as the authors know, this is the first time to show the design and implementation of an aerial DU unit with IAB functionality built using an open - source solution. In summary, the main objective of this paper is to explore and verify the use of UAVs as distributed units in the 5G network to provide more flexible and efficient network coverage and communication services.
