Abstract:For plasmas in an extremely high-density state, like stellar cores or compressed fuel in inertial fusion facilities, their behavior turns out to be quite different when compared with those plasmas in interstellar space or magnetic confinement devices. To figure out those differences and uncover the kinetic physics in electrostatic excitations, a quantum kinetic code solving Wigner-Poisson equations has been developed. Basic plasmon decay, Landau damping, and two-stream instability of extremely high-density plasmas are investigated by using our newly developed code. Numerical simulations show that in the linear region, the dispersion relations of intrinsic modes can be significantly affected by quantum effects, and such simulation results can be well described by the existing analytical theory. Especially in the nonlinear region, since the space-time scale of collective modes of plasmas is comparable to the electron de Broglie wavelength, their couplings produce some new physics: the energy exchange between the electron and the collective mode results in an abnormal oscillation that does not exist in classical plasmas.

Abstract:We present a general theoretical framework for discussing the physics of low frequency fluctuation spectra of shear Alfven and acoustic waves in toroidal plasmas of fusion interest. This framework helps identifying the relevant dynamics and, thus, interpreting experimental observations. We also discuss the roles of such general theoretical framework for verification and validation of numerical simulation codes vs. analytic predictions and experimental results.

Abstract:The optical properties of a nonideal fully ionized plasma are discussed using kinetic theory. It is shown that plasma conductivity in a moderately nonideal case in general requires accounting for the arbitrary degeneracy of the electron component of the plasma. The analytical results obtained generalize the recently developed consideration of the optical properties of plasma for nondegenerate electrons. Calculations were carried out for the static conductivity of plasma.

Abstract:In this paper a new model method for describing of the electrostatic screening in single-component systems which is free of Debye-Huckel's non-physical properties is presented. The method is appropriate for the determination of screening parameters in the case of the systems of higher non-ideality degree. The obtained screening characteristics are presented in a simple analytic form. The presented results make basic elements of a method for determination of screening characteristics in dense two-component plasmas, which are discussed in Part2 and Part 3 of this work.

Abstract:Textbooks often present the phenomenon of screening within the Thomas–Fermi model for three-dimensional free electron gases, but obtaining the dielectric response function and screening potential for dielectric systems of reduced dimensionality is also of pedagogical interest. In this work, we introduce a simple approach to investigate static screening in dielectric systems in the presence of an impurity charge for different dimensionalities. This approach is applicable to semiconductors and insulators alike. We demonstrate that, in 3D systems, the macroscopic dielectric function in reciprocal space is a constant, while in 2D and 1D systems, it strongly depends on the momentum transferred to the electrons in the dielectric. Through the proposed dielectric screening model, one can also determine binding energies in a hydrogenic model that can be used to describe excitations in real semiconductor systems.

Abstract:In model Hamiltonians, like Fröhlich's, the electron-phonon interaction is assumed to be screened from the beginning. The same occurs when this interaction is obtained by using the state-of-the-art density functional perturbation theory as starting point. In this work I formally demonstrate that these approaches are affected by a severe over-screening error. By using an out-of-equilibrium Many-Body technique I discuss how to merge the many-body approach with density-functional perturbation theory in order to correct the over-screening error. A symmetric statically screened phonon self-energy is obtained by down-folding the exact Baym-Kadanoff equations. The statically screened approximation proposed here is shown to have the same long-range spatial limit of the exact self-energy and to respect the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. The doubly screened approximation, commonly used in the literature, is shown, instead, to be over-screened, to violate several Many-Body properties and to have a wrong spatial long-range decay. The accuracy of the proposed approximation is tested against the exact solution of an extended model Fröhlich Hamiltonian and it is applied to a paradigmatic material: MgB$_2$. I find that the present treatment enhances the linewidths by $57 \%$ with respect to what has been previously reported for the anomalous $E_{2g}$ mode. I further discover that the $A_{2u}$ mode is also anomalous (its strong coupling being completely quenched by the over-screened expression). The present results deeply question methods based on state-of-the-art approaches and impact a wide range of fields such as thermal conductivity, phononic instabilities and non-equilibrium lattice dynamics.

Abstract:The purpose of this review is to revisit recent results in the literature where quantum plasmas with arbitrary degeneracy degree are considered. This is different from a frequent approach, where completely degeneracy is assumed in dense plasmas. The general reasoning in the reviewed works is to take a numerical coefficient in from of the Bohm potential term in quantum fluids, in order to fit the linear waves from quantum kinetic theory in the long wavelength limit. Moreover, the equation of state for the ideal Fermi gas is assumed, for arbitrary degeneracy degree. The quantum fluid equations allow the expedite derivation of weakly nonlinear equations from reductive perturbation theory. In this way, quantum Korteweg - de Vries and quantum Zakharov - Kuznetsov equations are derived, together with the conditions for bright and dark soliton propagation. Quantum ion-acoustic waves in unmagnetized and magnetized plasmas, together with magnetosonic waves, have been obtained for arbitrary degeneracy degree. The conditions for the application of the models, and the physical situations where the mixed dense - dilute systems exist, have been identified.
Plasma screening effect in warm solid-density iron plasma

Abstract:We study a plasma screening effect in a warm solid-density iron plasma. All the calculations are done using the average atom model in the muffin-tin approximation using the density functional theory in local density approximation at finite temperature in local thermodynamic equilibrium. Between temperatures equal to 15 and 20 eV, the system undergoes a huge change due to the 3d orbital becoming bound. In clear, four electrons become bound. Various average ionizations are defined to see this effect. At temperature equal to 20 eV, all the average ionizations agree to predict a Fermi energy and a plasma frequency that are close to the temperature of the medium. The density of states show a prominent resonance due to d orbital just below temperature equal to 15 eV. We show that the spectral opacity is drastically modified near the L shell threshold due to the appearance of a 2p→3d absorption line.

The Magnetized Vlasov-Ampère system and the Bernstein-Landau paradox

Abstract:We study the Bernstein-Landau paradox in the collisionless motion of an electrostatic plasma in the presence of a constant external magnetic field. The Bernstein-Landau paradox consists in that in the presence of the magnetic field, the electric field and the charge density fluctuation have an oscillatory behavior in time. This is radically different from Landau damping, in the case without magnetic field, where the electric field tends to zero for large times. We consider this problem from a new point of view. Instead of analyzing the linear magnetized Vlasov-Poisson system, as it is usually done, we study the linear magnetized Vlasov-Ampère system. We formulate the magnetized Vlasov-Ampère system as a Schrödinger equation with a selfadjoint magnetized Vlasov-Ampère operator in the Hilbert space of states with finite energy. The magnetized Vlasov-Ampère operator has a complete set of orthonormal eigenfunctions, that include the Bernstein modes. The expansion of the solution of the magnetized Vlasov-Ampère system in the eigenfunctions shows the oscillatory behavior in time. We prove the convergence of the expansion under optimal conditions, assuming only that the initial state has finite energy. This solves a problem that was recently posed in the literature. The Bernstein modes are not complete. To have a complete system it is necessary to add eigenfunctions that are associated with eigenvalues at all the integer multiples of the cyclotron frequency. These special plasma oscillations actually exist on their own, without the excitation of the other modes. In the limit when the magnetic fields goes to zero the spectrum of the magnetized Vlasov-Ampère operator changes drastically from pure point to absolutely continuous in the orthogonal complement to its kernel, due to a sharp change on its domain. This explains the Bernstein-Landau paradox.

Effect of a Temperature Gradient on the Screening Properties of Ionic Fluids

Abstract:The electrostatic screening properties of ionic fluids are of paramount importance in countless physical processes. Yet, the behavior of ionic conductors out of thermal equilibrium has to date mainly been studied in the context of thermodiffusion phenomena by virtue of direct extensions of Debye-Hückel theories. We investigate how the static response of a symmetric ionic fluid is influenced by the presence of a thermal gradient by introducing a theory of electrostatic screening under a stationary temperature profile. By borrowing mathematical methods commonly used in the semiclassical approximation of quantum particles, we find analytical solutions to the asymptotic decay of the charge density which can be used to describe the non-equilibrium response of the system to external charge perturbations and for arbitrary ionic concentrations. Notably, a transition between monotonic and oscillatory screening regimes is observed as an effect of the temperature variation which generalizes known results of thermal equilibrium to out of equilibrium conditions. A final quantitative example on the screening of charged surfaces in aqueous electrolytes shows that the deviation from thermal equilibrium predicted by our solutions is generally larger than thermodiffusion effects, and should therefore be taken into account for a comprehensive description of the electrical double layer. Our findings pave the way to the rigorous treatment of non-equilibrium steady states in ionic systems with potential applications to the study of energy materials, nanostructured systems and waste-heat-recovery technologies.

Abstract:The forces on individual electrons in an unscreened nondegenerate electron fluid, due to electron density fluctuations, have been calculated using Monte Carlo simulations and determined experimentally over a broad range of the plasma parameter Gamma. The experimental results are obtained from the magnetoconductivity sigma(B) measured for electrons on liquid helium below 1 K for B \leq 8 T. The magnitude and density dependence of sigma(B) are explained by the many-electron theory of magnetotransport. The internal electric fields found from the experiments are in excellent agreement with the simulations.
Flowing plasma rearrangement in the presence of static perturbing fields

Abstract:Charged particles interacting with electromagnetic waves have a portion of their energy tied up in wave-driven oscillations. When these waves are localized to the exhaust of linear magnetic confinement systems this ponderomotive effect can be utilized to enhance particle confinement. The same effect can be derived for particles moving via an $\mathbf{E} \times \mathbf{B}$ drift into a region of a static perturbation to the electromagnetic fields which has a large wave vector component in the direction of the motion. In this work we use a simplified slab model to self-consistently solve for the electromagnetic fields within the fluid flowing plasma of a static flute-like ($k_\parallel = 0)$ perturbation, and evaluate the resulting ponderomotive potential. We find that two types of perturbations can exist within the flowing plasma, which are an O wave and an X wave in the frame moving with the fluid. In the case of tenuous plasma, these perturbations are magnetostatic or electrostatic multipole-analog perpendicular to the guiding magnetic field in the lab frame, respectfully. For denser plasmas, the O wave-like perturbation is screened at the electron skin depth scale, and the X wave-like perturbation is a combination of a similar perpendicular electric perturbation and parallel magnetic perturbation. The ponderomotive potential generated in the X wave-like case is gyrofrequency-dependent, and can be used as either potential barriers or potential wells, depending on the direction of the flow velocity.

Abstract:A nonlinear gyrokinetic formalism for low-frequency (less than the cyclotron frequency) microscopic electromagnetic perturbations in general magnetic field configurations is developed. The nonlinear equations thus derived are valid in the strong-turbulence regime and contain effects due to finite Larmor radius, plasma inhomogeneities, and magnetic field geometries. The specific case of axisymmetric tokamaks is then considered and a model nonlinear equation is derived for electrostatic drift waves. Also, applying the formalism to the shear Alfvén wave heating scheme, it is found that nonlinear ion Landau damping of kinetic shear-Alfvén waves is modified, both qualitatively and quantitatively, by the diamagnetic drift effects. In particular, wave energy is found to cascade in wavenumber instead of frequency.
Screening of an electrically charged particle in a two-dimensional two-component plasma at $Γ=2$

Abstract:We consider the thermodynamic effects of an electrically charged impurity immersed in a two-dimensional two-component plasma, composed by particles with charges $\pm e$, at temperature $T$, at coupling $\Gamma=e^2/(k_B T)=2$, confined in a large disk of radius $R$. Particularly, we focus on the analysis of the charge density, the correlation functions, and the grand potential. Our analytical results show how the charges are redistributed in the circular geometry considered here. When we consider a positively charged impurity, the negative ions accumulate close to the impurity leaving an excess of positive charge that accumulates at the boundary of the disk. Due to the symmetry under charge exchange, the opposite effect takes place when we place a negative impurity. Both the cases in which the impurity charge is an integer multiple of the particle charges in the plasma, $\pm e$, and a fraction of them are considered; both situations require a slightly different mathematical treatments, showing the effect of the quantization of plasma charges. The bulk and tension effects in the plasma described by the grand potential are not modified by the introduction of the charged particle. Besides the effects due to the collapse coming from the attraction between oppositely charged ions, an additional topological term appears in the grand potential, proportional to $-n^2\ln(mR)$, with $n$ the dimensionless charge of the particle. This term modifies the central charge of the system, from $c=1$ to $c=1-6n^2$, when considered in the context of conformal field theories.

Abstract:Dynamic screening of the Coulomb interaction is included to calculate electron transport coefficient (electron thermal conductivity) in the fluid limit for an unmagnetized plasma. Calculated results show that the dynamic screening effect can reduce electron thermal conductivity and may be important for low-Z plasma with very large electron–ion temperature ratio (Te/Ti≳103).

Abstract:A gyrokinetic model is presented that can properly describe large and small amplitude electromagnetic fluctuations occurring on scale lengths ranging from the electron Larmor radius to the equilibrium perpendicular pressure gradient scale length, and the arbitrarily large deviations from thermal equilibrium that are present in the plasma periphery of tokamak devices. The formulation of the gyrokinetic model is based on a second-order accurate description of the single charged particle dynamics, derived from Lie perturbation theory, where the fast particle gyromotion is decoupled from the slow drifts assuming that the ratio of the ion sound Larmor radius to the perpendicular equilibrium pressure scale length is small. The collective behaviour of the plasma is obtained by a gyrokinetic Boltzmann equation that describes the evolution of the gyroaveraged distribution function. The collisional effects are included by a nonlinear gyrokinetic Dougherty collision operator. The gyrokinetic model is then developed into a set of coupled fluid equations referred to as the gyrokinetic moment hierarchy. To obtain this hierarchy, the gyroaveraged distribution function is expanded onto a Hermite–Laguerre velocity-space polynomial basis. Then, the gyrokinetic equation is projected onto the same basis yielding the spatial and temporal evolution of the Hermite–Laguerre expansion coefficients. A closed set of fluid equations for the lowest-order coefficients is presented. The Hermite–Laguerre projection is performed accurately at arbitrary perpendicular wavenumber values. Finally, the self-consistent evolution of the electromagnetic fields is described by a set of gyrokinetic Maxwell equations derived from a variational principle where the velocity integrals are explicitly evaluated.

Abstract:The traversing of fast electrons in dense D and T plasmas is discussed by different models with dynamical screening by means of dielectric functions. The traversing process is caused by a series of binary collision. It is found that the screening model with a classical dielectric function and Debye screening model only work in hot plasmas. Even for warm dense plasmas, the screening model with quantum dielectric function is reliable, which is well reproduced by the model with quantum static dielectric function. The related reasons are explored thoroughly. This work is helpful to study the transport of electrons in fully ionized dense plasmas.

Abstract:We demonstrate that in a nonuniform plasma, the parametric decay instabilities of kinetic Alfve?n waves could be quantitatively and qualitatively different from that in a uniform plasma. Specifically, the decay rate via ion Compton scattering is found to be enhanced, typically, by an order of magnitude. Furthermore, the parity of the decay kinetic Alfve?n wave spectrum is broken, leading to finite net wave momentum transfer and, consequently, significant convective plasma transport with implications for confinement improvement. Abstract:The investigation of the nonlinear Langmuir associations in an ultrarelativistic, fully degenerate quantum plasma, composed of stationary ions and warm electrons is considered. The quantum hydrodynamic model with the equation of state of electrons is used to derive a nonlinear differential equation that describes the chemical potential of electrons. Then, the Runge Kutta method is used to solve this equation numerically. Hence, the pro les of the chemical potential and electron number density are graphically presented. Numerical results show that the Bohm quantum force produces small scale quantum Langmuir oscillations along with the classical oscillations. These fi ndings are helpful in understanding the features of nonlinear Langmuir waves in various astrophysical plasmas such as planetary interiors and compact objects.

Abstract:Within the single fluid resistive magnetohydrodynamic model, systematic toroidal modelling efforts are devoted to investigate the plasma response induced screening of the applied external 3D magnetic field perturbations in the presence of sheared toroidal flow. One particular issue of interest is addressed, when the local flow speed approaches zero at the perturbation rational surface inside the plasma. Subtle screening physics, associated with the favourable averaged toroidal curvature effect (the GGJ effect (Glasser et al 1975 Phys. Fluids 7 875)), is found to play an essential role during slow flow near the rational surface by enhancing the screening at reduced flow. A strong cancellation effect between different terms of Ohm's law is discovered, leading to different screening physics in the GGJ regime, as compared to that of conventional screening of the typical resistive-inertial regime occurring at faster flow. These modelling results may be applicable to interpret certain mode locking experiments, as well as type-I edge localized mode suppression experiments, with resonant magnetic field perturbations being applied to tokamak plasmas at low input toroidal torque.
