Abstract:We analyze newly expanded and refined data from lattice studies of an SU(3) gauge theory with eight Dirac fermions in the fundamental representation. We focus on the light composite states emerging from these studies, consisting of a set of pseudoscalars and a single light scalar. We first consider the view that this theory is just outside the conformal window. In this case, the pseudoscalars arise from spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry. Identifying the scalar in this case as an approximate dilaton, we fit the lattice data to a dilaton effective field theory, finding that it yields a good fit even at lowest order. For comparison, we then consider the possibility that the theory is inside the conformal window. The fermion mass provides a deformation, triggering confinement. We employ simple scaling laws to fit the lattice data, and find that it is of lesser quality.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to explore the properties of light composite states in an SU(3) gauge theory with 8 Dirac fermions. These light composite states include a set of pseudoscalars and a single light scalar. The main problem of the research is to determine whether the theory is located at or near the boundary of the "conformal window". If the theory is outside the conformal window, the light pseudoscalar can be regarded as an approximate Nambu - Goldstone boson (pNGB) generated by spontaneously broken chiral symmetry. In this case, the light scalar can be interpreted as an approximate dilaton related to the spontaneous breaking of conformal symmetry. ### Research Background 1. **Standard Model and Higgs Boson**: Research on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) shows that the Higgs boson fits well with the description of the standard model. However, at higher energy scales, this description may evolve into a more fundamental form. For example, the Higgs boson may be generated by the underlying strong interaction. 2. **Approximate Conformal Symmetry**: The relatively light mass of the Higgs boson can be explained by its being an approximate Nambu - Goldstone boson or an approximate dilaton, the latter being generated by the spontaneous breaking of conformal symmetry. 3. **Lattice Gauge Theory**: By studying lattice SU(N) gauge theories with a large number of light Dirac fermions, it is possible to explore whether these theories are close to or within the "conformal window". For the SU(3) gauge group, when the number of fermions \( N_f \) is large, these theories may exhibit infrared conformality. ### Research Methods 1. **Data Sources**: The research uses the latest lattice data, including the pseudoscalar mass \( M_\pi \), the pseudoscalar decay constant \( F_\pi \), the light scalar mass \( M_d \) and the scalar decay constant \( F_S \), all data are in units of lattice spacing. 2. **Fitting Methods**: - **Dilaton Effective Field Theory (dEFT)**: Assuming that the theory is outside the conformal window, use dEFT to fit the lattice data. - **Mass - deformed Conformal Theory (mass - deformed CFT)**: Assuming that the theory is within the conformal window, use a simple scaling law to fit the lattice data. ### Main Results 1. **dEFT Fitting**: - dEFT provides a good fit at the lowest order. The fitting parameters include \( y \), \( B_\pi \), \( \Delta \), \( f_\pi^2 \), \( f_\pi^2/f_d^2 \) and \( m_d^2/f_d^2 \). - The fitting results show that dEFT can well describe the lattice data, especially in the low - energy expansion. 2. **mass - deformed CFT Fitting**: - Although mass - deformed CFT also performs fitting, its fitting quality is poor and the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) value is high, indicating that the dEFT fitting is more superior. - After including the next - to - leading - order (NLO) correction, the fitting quality of mass - deformed CFT is improved, but it is still not as good as dEFT. ### Conclusions 1. **Theoretical Position**: According to the results of dEFT fitting, the theory is likely to be outside the conformal window, and the light scalar can be interpreted as an approximate dilaton. 2. **Future Research Directions**: Further research needs to perform lattice simulations under stronger coupling to verify the validity of the hypothesis and test whether dEFT is applicable to other potentially approximately conformal systems. ### Formula Summary - **dEFT Lagrangian**: \[ \mathcal{L} = \frac{1}{2} \partial_\mu \chi \partial^\mu \chi + \frac{f_\pi^2}{4} \left(\frac{\chi}{f_d}\right)^2 \text{Tr}[\partial_\mu \Sigma (\partial^\mu \Sigma)^\dagger] + \frac{m_\pi^2 f_\pi^2}{4} \left(\frac{\chi}{f_
