Abstract:<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Abstract</h3> <p class="a-plus-plus">Motivated by gauge theory, we develop a general framework for chain complex-valued algebraic quantum field theories. Building upon our recent operadic approach to this subject, we show that the category of such theories carries a canonical model structure and explain the important conceptual and also practical consequences of this result. As a concrete application, we provide a derived version of Fredenhagen’s universal algebra construction, which is relevant e.g. for the BRST/BV formalism. We further develop a homotopy theoretical generalization of algebraic quantum field theory with a particular focus on the homotopy-coherent Einstein causality axiom. We provide examples of such homotopy-coherent theories via (1) smooth normalized cochain algebras on <span class="a-plus-plus inline-equation id-i-eq1"> <span class="a-plus-plus equation-source format-t-e-x">$\infty $</span> </span>-stacks, and (2) fiber-wise groupoid cohomology of a category fibered in groupoids with coefficients in a strict quantum field theory.</p>

Abstract:This paper studies the homotopy theory of algebras and homotopy algebras over an operad. It provides an exhaustive description of their higher homotopical properties using the more general notion of morphisms called infinity-morphisms. The method consists in using the operadic calculus to endow the category of coalgebras over the Koszul dual cooperad or the bar construction with a new type of model category structure, Quillen equivalent to that of algebras. We provide an explicit homotopy equivalence for infinity-morphisms, which gives a simple description of the homotopy category, and we endow the category of homotopy algebras with an infinity-category structure.

Tangent categories of algebras over operads

Abstract:Associated to a presentable $\infty$-category $\mathcal{C}$ and an object $X \in \mathcal{C}$ is the tangent $\infty$-category $\mathcal{T}_X\mathcal{C}$, consisting of parameterized spectrum objects over $X$. This gives rise to a cohomology theory, called Quillen cohomology, whose category of coefficients is $\mathcal{T}_X\mathcal{C}$. When $\mathcal{C}$ consists of algebras over a nice $\infty$-operad in a stable $\infty$-category, $\mathcal{T}_X\mathcal{C}$ is equivalent to the $\infty$-category of operadic modules, by work of Basterra--Mandell, Schwede and Lurie. In this paper we develop the model-categorical counterpart of this identification and extend it to the case of algebras over an enriched operad, taking values in a model category which is not necessarily stable. This extended comparison can be used, for example, to identify the cotangent complex of enriched categories, an application we take up in a subsequent paper.

Abstract:We present a definition of homotopy algebra for an operad, and explore its consequences. The paper should be accessible to topologists, category theorists, and anyone acquainted with operads. After a review of operads and monoidal categories, the definition of homotopy algebra is given. Specifically, suppose that M is a monoidal category in which it makes sense to talk about algebras for some operad P. Then our definition says what a homotopy P-algebra in M is, provided only that some of the morphisms in M have been marked out as `homotopy equivalences'. The bulk of the paper consists of examples of homotopy algebras. We show that any loop space is a homotopy monoid, and, in fact, that any n-fold loop space is an n-fold homotopy monoid in an appropriate sense. We try to compare weakened algebraic structures such as A_infinity-spaces, A_infinity-algebras and non-strict monoidal categories to our homotopy algebras, with varying degrees of success. We also prove results on `change of base', e.g. that the classifying space of a homotopy monoidal category is a homotopy topological monoid. Finally, we reflect on the advantages and disadvantages of our definition, and on how the definition really ought to be replaced by a more subtle infinity-categorical version.

Abstract:Algebraic quantum field theory and prefactorization algebra are two mathematical approaches to quantum field theory. In this monograph, using a new coend definition of the Boardman-Vogt construction of a colored operad, we define homotopy algebraic quantum field theories and homotopy prefactorization algebras and investigate their homotopy coherent structures. Homotopy coherent diagrams, homotopy inverses, A-infinity-algebras, E-infinity-algebras, and E-infinity-modules arise naturally in this context. In particular, each homotopy algebraic quantum field theory has the structure of a homotopy coherent diagram of A-infinity-algebras and satisfies a homotopy coherent version of the causality axiom. When the time-slice axiom is defined for algebraic quantum field theory, a homotopy coherent version of the time-slice axiom is satisfied by each homotopy algebraic quantum field theory. Over each topological space, every homotopy prefactorization algebra has the structure of a homotopy coherent diagram of E-infinity-modules over an E-infinity-algebra. To compare the two approaches, we construct a comparison morphism from the colored operad for (homotopy) prefactorization algebras to the colored operad for (homotopy) algebraic quantum field theories and study the induced adjunctions on algebras.

Abstract:Involutive category theory provides a flexible framework to describe involutive structures on algebraic objects, such as anti-linear involutions on complex vector spaces. Motivated by the prominent role of involutions in quantum (field) theory, we develop the involutive analogs of colored operads and their algebras, named colored $\ast$-operads and $\ast$-algebras. Central to the definition of colored $\ast$-operads is the involutive monoidal category of symmetric sequences, which we obtain from a general product-exponential $2$-adjunction whose right adjoint forms involutive functor categories. For $\ast$-algebras over $\ast$-operads we obtain involutive analogs of the usual change of color and operad adjunctions. As an application, we turn the colored operads for algebraic quantum field theory into colored $\ast$-operads. The simplest instance is the associative $\ast$-operad, whose $\ast$-algebras are unital and associative $\ast$-algebras.

Abstract:Conformal Quantum Field Theories (CFT) in 1 or 1+1 spacetime dimensions (respectively called chiral and full CFTs) admit several "axiomatic" (mathematically rigorous and model-independent) formulations. In this note, we deal with the von Neumann algebraic formulation due to Haag and Kastler, mainly restricted to the chiral CFT setting. Irrespectively of the chosen formulation, one can ask the questions: given a theory $\mathcal{A}$, how many and which are the possible extensions $\mathcal{B} \supset \mathcal{A}$ or subtheories $\mathcal{B} \subset \mathcal{A}$? How to construct and classify them, and study their properties? Extensions are typically described in the language of algebra objects in the braided tensor category of representations of $\mathcal{A}$, while subtheories require different ideas. In this paper, we review recent structural results on the study of subtheories in the von Neumann algebraic formulation (conformal subnets) of a given chiral CFT (conformal net). Furthermore, building on [BDG23], we provide a "quantum Galois theory" for conformal nets analogous to the one for Vertex Operator Algebras (VOA). We also outline the case of 3+1 dimensional Algebraic Quantum Field Theories (AQFT). The aforementioned results make use of families of (extreme) vacuum state preserving unital completely positive maps acting on the net of von Neumann algebras, hereafter called quantum operations. These are natural generalizations of the ordinary vacuum preserving gauge automorphisms, hence they play the role of "generalized global gauge symmetries". Quantum operations suffice to describe all possible conformal subnets of a given conformal net with the same central charge.

Abstract:In his fundamental work, Quillen developed the theory of the cotangent complex as a universal abelian derived invariant, and used it to define and study a canonical form of cohomology, encompassing many known cohomology theories. Additional cohomology theories, such as generalized cohomology of spaces and topological André-Quillen cohomology, can be accommodated by considering a spectral version of the cotangent complex. Recent work of Lurie established a comprehensive $\infty$-categorical analogue of the cotangent complex formalism using stabilization of $\infty$-categories. In this paper we study the spectral cotangent complex while working in Quillen's model categorical setting. Our main result gives new and explicit computations of the cotangent complex and Quillen cohomology of enriched categories. For this we make essential use of previous work, which identifies the tangent categories of operadic algebras in unstable model categories. In particular, we present the cotangent complex of an $\infty$-category as a spectrum valued functor on its twisted arrow category, and consider the associated obstruction theory in some examples of interest.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to relate the quantum category $\mathcal{O}$ (known also as the category of modules over the mixed quantum group) at an odd root of unity to the affine Hecke category. Namely, we prove equivalences of highest weight categories between integral blocks of the affine category $\mathcal{O}$ and the heart of the so called ``new'' t-structure on the affine Hecke category. In order to do this we deform our categories over the formal neighborhood of $0$ in the dual affine Cartan and show that the categories of standardly filtered objects in the deformations are equivalent. For this, we construct functors from the deformed categories to the category of bimodules over the formal power series on the affine Cartan. Then we use what we call the Rouquier-Soergel theory, also developed in this paper, to show that on the categories of standardly filtered objects, these functors are full embeddings with the same image.

Abstract:This review article discusses recent progress in understanding of various families of integrable models in terms of algebraic geometry, representation theory, and physics. In particular, we address the connections between soluble many-body systems of Calogero-Ruijsenaars type, quantum spin chains, spaces of opers, representations of double affine Hecke algebras, enumerative counts to quiver varieties, to name just a few. We formulate several conjectures and open problems. This is a contribution to the proceedings of the conference on Elliptic Integrable Systems and Representation Theory, which was held in August 2023 at University of Tokyo.

Abstract:We develop an equivariant theory of graphs with respect to quantum symmetries and present a detailed exposition of various examples. We portray unitary tensor categories as a unifying framework encompassing all finite classical simple graphs, (quantum) Cayley graphs of finite (quantum) groupoids, and all finite-dimensional quantum graphs. We model a quantum set by a finite-index inclusion of C*-algebras and use the quantum Fourier transform to obtain all possible adjacency operators. In particular, we show every finite-index subfactor can be regarded as a complete quantum graph and describe how to find all its subgraphs. As applications, we prove a version of Frucht's Theorem for finite quantum groupoids, and introduce a version of path spaces for quantum graphs.

We review the classical homotopical tools in the theory of algebraic operads, namely Koszul duality. We give concrete examples of applications of such tools to various flavours of problems related to deformations of algebraic structures. We also study formal moduli problems and related notions from the operadic point of view.

Abstract:Quantum $L_\infty$ algebras are a generalization of $L_\infty$ algebras with a scalar product and with operations corresponding to higher genus graphs. We construct a minimal model of a given quantum $L_\infty$ algebra via the homological perturbation lemma and show that it's given by a Feynman diagram expansion, computing the effective action in the finite-dimensional Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism. We also construct a homotopy between the original and this effective quantum $L_\infty$ algebra.

Abstract:In this paper we define and compare several new Quillen model structures which present the homotopy theory of algebraic quantum field theories. In this way, we expand foundational work of Benini et al. by providing a richer framework to detect and treat homotopical phenomena in quantum field theory. Our main technical tool is a new extension model structure on operadic algebras which is constructed via (right) Bousfield localization. We expect that this tool is useful in other contexts.

Abstract:This paper studies the homotopy theory of the Grothendieck construction using model categories and semi-model categories, provides a unifying framework for the homotopy theory of operads and their algebras and modules, and uses this framework to produce model structures, rectification results, and properness results in new settings. In contrast to previous authors, we begin with a global (semi-)model structure on the Grothendieck and induce (semi-)model structures on the base and fibers. In a companion paper, we show how to produce such global model structures in general settings. Applications include numerous flavors of operads encoded by polynomial monads and substitudes (symmetric, non-symmetric, cyclic, modular, higher operads, dioperads, properads, and PROPs), (commutative) monoids and their modules, and twisted modular operads. We also prove a general result for upgrading a semi-model structure to a full model structure.

Abstract:In quantum computing, the computation is achieved by linear operators in or between Hilbert spaces. In this work, we explore a new computation scheme, in which the linear operators in quantum computing are replaced by (higher) functors between two (higher) categories. If from Turing computing to quantum computing is the first quantization of computation, then this new scheme can be viewed as the second quantization of computation. The fundamental problem in realizing this idea is how to realize a (higher) functor physically. We provide a theoretical idea of realizing (higher) functors physically based on the physics of topological orders.

Abstract:We introduce a construction that associates, to each finite dimensional k-vector space V, a family of projective k-varieties that comes equipped with the structure of a operad in the category of k-schemes. When dim V = 1, this operad contains, as a suboperad, the family of moduli spaces of stably marked rational curves. For general V, our operad contains the family of Chen-Gibney-Krashen moduli spaces of stably marked trees of projective spaces as a suboperad. We realize our operad as part of a larger theory that describes how to construct operads from suitable functors. Given a category C that satisfies conditions allowing us to consider the operation of "substituting a value into an argument" within C, and given any functor F on C satisfying a variant of right-exactness, we construct a version of a set-valued operad whose inputs are given by objects in C. When C happens to be the category of nonempty finite sets, we obtain operads in the classic sense. Finally, we show that in many cases it is possible to realize these operads as disjoint unions of quiver Grassmannians.

Abstract:We propose a conjectural correspondence between the spectra of the Bethe algebra for the quantum toroidal $\mathfrak{gl}_2$ algebra on relaxed Verma modules, and $q$-hypergeometric opers with apparent singularities. We introduce alongside the notion of apparent singularities for linear $q$-difference operators and discuss some of their properties. We also touch on a generalization to $\mathfrak{gl}_n$.
