Abstract:We show the explicit solution operator of an abstract Cauchy problem involving a time-variable coefficient and a fractional power of an almost sectorial operator. Also, by using the representation of the solution operator, we solve the inverse abstract Cauchy problem for recovering the time-variable coefficient. As a complement, we also study similar problems by using almost sectorial operators that depend on a time-variable.

Abstract:Of concern are the Cauchy problems for linear and semilinear time fractional evolution equations involving in the linear part, a linear operator A whose resolvent satisfies the estimate of growth −γ (−1<γ<0) in a sector of the complex plane, which occurs when one considers, for instance, the partial differential operators in the limit domain of dumb-bell with a thin handle or in the space of Hölder continuous functions. By constructing a pair of families of operators in terms of the generalized Mittag-Leffler-type functions and the resolvent operators associated with A (for the first time), and a deep analysis on the properties for these families, we obtain the existence and uniqueness of mild solutions and classical solutions to the Cauchy problems. Moreover, we present three examples to illustrate the feasibility of our results.

Abstract:We study solution techniques for an evolution equation involving second order derivative in time and the spectral fractional powers, of order $s \in (0,1)$, of symmetric, coercive, linear, elliptic, second-order operators in bounded domains $\Omega$. We realize fractional diffusion as the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for a nonuniformly elliptic problem posed on the semi-infinite cylinder $\mathcal{C} = \Omega \times (0,\infty)$. We thus rewrite our evolution problem as a quasi-stationary elliptic problem with a dynamic boundary condition and derive space, time, and space-time regularity estimates for its solution. The latter problem exhibits an exponential decay in the extended dimension and thus suggests a truncation that is suitable for numerical approximation. We propose and analyze two fully discrete schemes. The discretization in time is based on finite difference discretization techniques: trapezoidal and leapfrog schemes. The discretization in space relies on the tensorization of a first-degree FEM in $\Omega$ with a suitable $hp$-FEM in the extended variable. For both schemes we derive stability and error estimates.

Abstract:In this paper, we use the monotone iterative technique combined with cone theory to investigate the existence of solutions to the Cauchy problem for Caputo fractional differential equations in Banach spaces. New existence theorems are obtained for the case of a cone P being normal and fully regular respectively. Moreover, two examples are given to illustrate the abstract results.

Abstract:The main objective of this paper is to introduce an algorithm for solving fractional and classical differential equations based on a new generalized fractional power series. The algorithm relies on expanding the solution of an FDE or an ODE as a generalized power series, shedding light on the choice of the exponent for the monomials. Furthermore, it accommodates situations where terms in the equation are multiplied by $t^{\alpha}$for example. The key contribution is how the exponents for these terms are chosen, which is different from traditional methods.

Abstract:In this paper, we are concerned with Cauchy problems of fractional differential equations with Riemann–Liouville fractional derivatives in infinite-dimensional Banach spaces. We introduce the notion of fractional resolvent, obtain some its properties, and present a generation theorem for exponentially bounded fractional resolvents. Moreover, we prove that a homogeneous α-order Cauchy problem is well posed if and only if its coefficient operator is the generator of an α-order fractional resolvent, and we give sufficient conditions to guarantee the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions and strong solutions of an inhomogeneous α-order Cauchy problem.

Abstract:We show that fractional powers of general sectorial operators on Banach spaces can be obtained by the harmonic extension approach. Moreover, for the corresponding second order ordinary differential equation with incomplete data describing the harmonic extension we prove existence and uniqueness of a bounded solution (i.e. of the harmonic extension).

Abstract:In this paper we revisit the classical Cauchy problem for Laplace's equation as well as two further related problems in the light of regularisation of this highly ill-conditioned problem by replacing integer derivatives with fractional ones. We do so in the spirit of quasi reversibility, replacing a classically severely ill-posed PDE problem by a nearby well-posed or only mildly ill-posed one. In order to be able to make use of the known stabilising effect of one-dimensional fractional derivatives of Abel type we work in a particular rectangular (in higher space dimensions cylindrical) geometry. We start with the plain Cauchy problem of reconstructing the values of a harmonic function inside this domain from its Dirichlet and Neumann trace on part of the boundary (the cylinder base) and explore three options for doing this with fractional operators. The two other related problems are the recovery of a free boundary and then this together with simultaneous recovery of the impedance function in the boundary condition. Our main technique here will be Newton's method. The paper contains numerical reconstructions and convergence results for the devised methods.

Abstract:Fractional differential (and difference) operators play a role in a number of diverse settings: integrable systems, mirror symmetry, Hurwitz numbers, the Bethe ansatz equations. We prove extensions of the three major results on algebras of commuting (ordinary) differentials operators to the setting of fractional differential operators: (1) the Burchnall-Chaundy theorem that a pair of commuting differential operators is algebraically dependent, (2) the classification of maximal commutative algebras of differential operators in terms of Sato's theory and (3) the Krichever correspondence constructing those of rank 1 in an algebro-geometric way. Unlike the available proofs of the Burchnall-Chaundy theorem which use the action of one differential operator on the kernel of the other, our extension to the fractional case uses bounds on orders of fractional differential operators and growth of algebras, which also presents a new and much shorter proof of the original result. The second main theorem is achieved by developing a new tool of the spectral field of a point in Sato's Grassmannian, which carries more information than the widely used notion of spectral curve of a KP solution. Our Krichever type correspondence for fractional differential operators is based on infinite jet bundles.

Abstract:Abstract The fractional calculus gains wide applications nowadays in all fields. The implementation of the fractional differential operators on the partial differential equations make it more reality. The space-time-fractional differential equations mathematically model physical, biological, medical, etc., and their solutions explain the real life problems more than the classical partial differential equations. Some new published papers on this field made many treatments and approximations to the fractional differential operators making them loose their physical and mathematical meanings. In this paper, I answer the question: why do we need the fractional operators?. I give brief notes on some important fractional differential operators and their Grünwald-Letnikov schemes. I implement the Caputo time fractional operator and the Riesz-Feller operator on some physical and stochastic problems. I give some numerical results to some physical models to show the efficiency of the Grünwald-Letnikov scheme and its shifted formulae. Abstract:In this paper, based on distributed-order fractional diffusion equation we propose the distributed-order fractional abstract Cauchy problem (DFACP) and study the well-posedness of DFACP. Using functional calculus technique, we prove that the general distributed-order fractional operator generates a bounded analytic $\alpha$-times resolvent operator family or a $C_0$-semigroup under some suitable conditions. In addition, we reveal the relation between two $\alpha$-times resolvent families generated by the sectorial operator $A$ and the special distributed-order fractional operator, $p_1A^{\beta_1}+ p_2A^{\beta_2}+\ldots +p_nA^{\beta_n}$, respectively.

Abstract:We study discretizations of fractional fully nonlinear equations by powers of discrete Laplacians. Our problems are parabolic and of order since they involve fractional Laplace operators . They arise e.g. in control and game theory as dynamic programming equations – HJB and Isaacs equation – and solutions are non-smooth in general and should be interpreted as viscosity solutions. Our approximations are realized as finite-difference quadrature approximations and are 2nd order accurate for all values of . The accuracy of previous approximations of fractional fully nonlinear equations depend on and are worse when is close to 2. We show that the schemes are monotone, consistent, -stable, and convergent using a priori estimates, viscosity solutions theory, and the method of half-relaxed limits. We also prove a second order error bound for smooth solutions and present many numerical examples.

Theory on new fractional operators using normalization and probability tools

Abstract:We show how a rescaling of fractional operators with bounded kernels may help circumvent their documented deficiencies, for example, the inconsistency at zero or the lack of inverse integral operator. On the other hand, we build a novel class of linear operators with memory effects to extend the L-fractional and the ordinary derivatives, using probability tools. A Mittag-Leffler-type function is introduced to solve linear problems, and nonlinear equations are solved with power series, illustrating the methods for the SIR model. The inverse operator is constructed, and a fundamental theorem of calculus and an existence-and-uniqueness result for differential equations are proved. A conjecture on deconvolution is raised, that would permit completing the proposed theory.

Abstract:Fractional derivatives can be used to model time delays in a diffusion process. When the order of the fractional derivative is distributed over the unit interval, it is useful for modeling a mixture of delay sources. In some special cases distributed order derivative can be used to model ultra-slow diffusion. We extend the results of (Baeumer, B. and Meerschaert, M. M. Stochastic solutions for fractional Cauchy problems. Fract. Calc. Appl. Anal. 4 (2001), 481--500.) in the single order fractional derivative case to distributed order fractional derivative case. In particular, we develop the strong analytic solutions of distributed order fractional Cauchy problems.

Abstract:Several applied problems are characterized by the need to numerically solve equations with an operator function (matrix function). In particular, in the last decade, mathematical models with a fractional power of an elliptic operator and numerical methods for their study have been actively discussed. Computational algorithms for such non-standard problems are based on approximations by the operator function. The most widespread are the approaches using various options for rational approximation. Also, we note the methods that relate to approximation by exponential sums. In this paper, the possibility of using approximation by exponential products is noted. The solution of an equation with an operator function is based on the transition to standard stationary or evolutionary problems. General approaches are illustrated by a problem with a fractional power of the operator. The first class of methods is based on the integral representation of the operator function under rational approximation, approximation by exponential sums, and approximation by exponential products. The second class of methods is associated with solving an auxiliary Cauchy problem for some evolutionary equation.

Abstract:Fractional nonlinear differential equations present an interplay between two common and important effective descriptions used to simplify high dimensional or more complicated theories: nonlinearity and fractional derivatives. These effective descriptions thus appear commonly in physical and mathematical modeling. We present a new series method providing systematic controlled accuracy for solutions of fractional nonlinear differential equations. The method relies on spatially iterative use of power series expansions. Our approach permits an arbitrarily large radius of convergence and thus solves the typical divergence problem endemic to power series approaches. We apply our method to the fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation and its imaginary time rotation, the fractional nonlinear diffusion equation. For the fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation we find fractional generalizations of cnoidal waves of Jacobi elliptic functions as well as a fractional bright soliton. For the fractional nonlinear diffusion equation we find the combination of fractional and nonlinear effects results in a more strongly localized solution which nevertheless still exhibits power law tails, albeit at a much lower density.

Abstract:In a fractional Cauchy problem, the usual first order time derivative is replaced by a fractional derivative. This problem was first considered by \citet{nigmatullin}, and \citet{zaslavsky} in $\mathbb R^d$ for modeling some physical phenomena. The fractional derivative models time delays in a diffusion process. We will give a survey of the recent results on the fractional Cauchy problem and its generalizations on bounded domains $D\subset \rd$ obtained in \citet{m-n-v-aop, mnv-2}. We also study the solutions of fractional Cauchy problem where the first time derivative is replaced with an infinite sum of fractional derivatives. We point out a connection to eigenvalue problems for the fractional time operators considered. The solutions to the eigenvalue problems are expressed by Mittag-Leffler functions and its generalized versions. The stochastic solution of the eigenvalue problems for the fractional derivatives are given by inverse subordinators.

Abstract:The theory of operator-valued Fourier multipliers is used to obtain well-posedness results for some degenerate multi-term fractional differential equations with infinite delay in general Banach spaces. We use the right-sided Liouville fractional derivative on the real axis and the Besov spaces , , , in particular the spaces of Hölder continuous functions , with a given Banach space. The results are used for the treatment of some concrete integro-differential equations which appear in several models in the applied sciences, notably physics, biological sciences, rheology, and material science. In many more areas, fractional models are increasingly used to refine traditional models based on partial differential equations of evolution.
