Abstract:We develop a theory of turbulence of weak random gravity waves on surface of deep water in which the main nonlinear process at high-frequency part of the spectrum is a nonlocal interaction with a strong low-frequency component. The latter component, which we call ``condensate", may appear in the system due to, e.g., the finite size effects which lead to an energy stagnation at waves whose wavelength is comparable to the size of the retaining flume. Our theory assumes the form of a linear spectral diffusion equation. We find a scaling solution of this equation and propose it as a possible explanation of recent numerical results for the gravity wave spectrum.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the non - local interaction mechanism of weak random gravity - wave turbulence on the deep - water surface and its influence on the wave spectrum in the presence of strong low - frequency components (referred to as "condensate states"). Specifically, the authors focus on how to describe this non - local interaction when energy stagnates on waves with wavelengths comparable to the size of the water tank due to finite - size effects in the system, and explain the phenomenon of the deviation of the gravity - wave spectrum from the inverse - cascade Kolmogorov - Zakharov (KZ) spectrum observed in recent numerical simulations. ### Research Background - **Wave Turbulence Theory (WTT)**: This is a statistical closure method used to describe the evolution of random weak - wave fields and has been successfully applied in quantum, classical, and cosmological wave systems. - **Dual - cascade Behavior**: For weakly nonlinear gravity waves, there are two quadratic invariants (energy and wave action), which lead to dual - cascade behavior, where one cascade is the downward - scale transfer of energy and the other is the upward - scale transfer of wave action. - **Condensate States**: In the absence of an effective dissipation mechanism on large scales, it will cause the wave spectrum to accumulate near the maximum available scale of the system. This phenomenon is called condensate states and may disrupt the locality of the interaction. ### Research Objectives - **Develop a New Theoretical Framework**: The authors develop a new wave turbulence theory to describe gravity - wave turbulence in the presence of strong low - frequency condensate states. - **Explain Experimental and Numerical Results**: Through this theoretical framework, the authors attempt to explain the deviation of the inverse - cascade KZ spectrum observed in recent numerical simulations. ### Main Contributions - **Derive a Diffusion Equation**: Starting from the wave - dynamics equation, the authors derive a singular inhomogeneous spectral diffusion equation to describe the evolution of the wave - action spectrum in the presence of condensate states. - **Find a Stable Solution**: They find a stable solution \(n_k\sim k^{- 3}\) of the corresponding constant wave - action cascade and propose that this may be the key to explaining previous numerical and experimental results. ### Conclusions The authors believe that their theory can explain the special behavior of the gravity - wave spectrum in the presence of strong low - frequency condensate states. In addition, they discuss the mechanisms of supplying energy and wave action to the condensate states and propose two possible scenarios: one is through the local inverse - cascade in the initial stage, and the other is through the quasi - resonant three - wave process to directly excite the condensate - state mode. These mechanisms need further verification.
