Abstract:This paper focuses on the study of the finite-time consensus (FTC) and fixed-time consensus (FXC) issues of multi-agent systems (MASs) driven by parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs). Compared with the study in the existing literature, the topic of FTC and FXC control is first embodied in MASs driven by parabolic PDEs. Based on the Lyapunov theorems, the FTC and FXC controllers are devised to ensure that the MASs converge to a stable state with external disturbance. Furthermore, we simplify the controllers to guarantee the FTC and FXC of MASs without external disturbance. Finally, two illustrative examples are given to verify the feasibility of controllers.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems Addressed by the Paper
The paper primarily investigates the finite-time consensus (FTC) and fixed-time consensus (FXC) problems of multi-agent systems (MASs) driven by parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs). Specifically, the goals of the paper are as follows:
1. **Propose a New Model**: For the first time, a model of multi-agent systems driven by parabolic PDEs and subjected to external disturbances is proposed. This model can be used to describe thermal processes in science, engineering, and chemical and biochemical engineering.
2. **Design Controllers**: Based on the Lyapunov theorem, FTC and FXC controllers are designed to ensure that the multi-agent systems converge to a stable state in the presence of external disturbances. Additionally, the controllers are simplified to achieve FTC and FXC in the absence of external disturbances.
3. **Address Limitations of Existing Research**: Most existing research on FTC and FXC is based on dynamical systems described by ordinary differential equations (ODEs). However, in many practical situations, dynamical systems are influenced not only by time but also by spatial position. Therefore, using PDEs to model these dynamical systems is more appropriate. The paper aims to fill this research gap and address the FTC and FXC problems of multi-agent systems described by PDEs.
4. **Validate the Effectiveness of the Controllers**: The feasibility of the designed controllers is validated through two examples.
### Main Contributions
1. **Proposing a New Model**: For the first time, a model of multi-agent systems driven by parabolic PDEs and subjected to external disturbances is proposed, and distributed FTC and FXC controllers that meet different control effects are designed.
2. **Overcoming Research Challenges**: Compared to other studies on multi-agent systems based on ODEs, the main challenges of multi-agent systems based on PDEs lie in constructing Lyapunov functions, estimating state variables, and designing controllers. The paper successfully overcomes these challenges by constructing integral forms of Lyapunov functions, using the method of integration by parts, and applying the Wirtinger inequality.
3. **Accelerating Convergence Speed**: A new control coefficient is proposed, which accelerates the convergence speed and improves control effects by utilizing information from neighboring agents.
### Research Background
Multi-agent systems (MASs) have attracted extensive research interest in fields such as computer science, neural networks, and cooperative control. The consensus problem is an important topic in the study of multi-agent systems, aiming to make multiple agents reach an agreement under a control protocol. Although traditional asymptotic consensus control theory has achieved rich research results, in practical applications, faster convergence speeds are often required, and it is hoped that multi-agent systems can reach consensus within a finite time. Therefore, studying the finite-time consensus (FTC) and fixed-time consensus (FXC) problems is of great significance.
### Research Methods
The paper addresses the aforementioned problems through the following steps:
1. **Model Establishment**: A model of multi-agent systems driven by parabolic PDEs and subjected to external disturbances is proposed.
2. **Controller Design**: FTC and FXC controllers are designed based on the Lyapunov theorem.
3. **Theoretical Analysis**: By constructing Lyapunov functions, estimating state variables and their derivatives, the effectiveness of the controllers is proven.
4. **Numerical Simulation**: The feasibility and effectiveness of the designed controllers are validated through two examples.
### Conclusion
The paper successfully addresses the finite-time consensus and fixed-time consensus problems of multi-agent systems driven by parabolic PDEs, providing new ideas and methods for research in related fields.
