Abstract:A classical result of Fekete gives necessary conditions on a compact set in the complex plane so that it contains infinitely many sets of conjugate algebraic integers. We prove an effective version of Fekete's theorem in terms of a height function. As an application, we give a lower bound on the growth of the leading coefficient of certain polynomial sequences, generalizing a result by Schur. Lastly, we give an upper bound on minimal asymptotics of height over sequences of algebraic numbers.

Limits of Convex Projective Surfaces and Finsler Metrics

Abstract:We show that for certain sequences escaping to infinity in the $\operatorname{SL}_3\mathbb{R}$ Hitchin component, growth rates of trace functions are described by natural Finsler metrics. More specifically, as the Labourie-Loftin cubic differential gets big, logarithms of trace functions are approximated by lengths in a Finsler metric which has triangular unit balls and is defined directly in terms of the cubic differential. This is equivalent to a conjecture of Loftin from 2006 which has recently been proven by Loftin, Tamburelli, and Wolf, though phrasing the result in terms of Finsler metrics is new and leads to stronger results with simpler proofs. From our perspective, the result is a corollary of a more local theorem which may have other applications. The key ingredient of the proof is another asymmetric Finsler metric, defined on any convex projective surface, recently defined by Danciger and Stecker, in which lengths of loops are logarithms of eigenvalues. We imitate work of Nie to show that, as the cubic differential gets big, Danciger and Stecker's metric converges to our Finsler metric with triangular unit balls. While Loftin, Tamburelli, and Wolf address cubic differential rays, our methods also address sequences of representations which are asymptotic to cubic differential rays, giving us more insight into natural compactifications of the moduli space of convex projective surfaces.

Dimension growth for affine varieties

Abstract:We prove uniform upper bounds on the number of integral points of bounded height on affine varieties. If $X$ is an irreducible affine variety of degree $d\geq 4$ in $\mathbb{A}^n$ which is not the preimage of a curve under a linear map $\mathbb{A}^n\to \mathbb{A}^{n-\dim X+1}$, then we prove that $X$ has at most $O_{d,n,\varepsilon}(B^{\dim X - 1 + \varepsilon})$ integral points up to height $B$. This is a strong analogue of dimension growth for projective varieties, and improves upon a theorem due to Pila, and a theorem due to Browning-Heath-Brown-Salberger. Our techniques follow the $p$-adic determinant method, in the spirit of Heath-Brown, but with improvements due to Salberger, Walsh, and Castryck-Cluckers-Dittmann-Nguyen. The main difficulty is to count integral points on lines on an affine surface in $\mathbb{A}^3$, for which we develop point-counting results for curves in $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$. We also formulate and prove analogous results over global fields, following work by Paredes-Sasyk.

Abstract:The notion of asymptotic Fekete arrays, arrays of points in a compact set $K\subset {\bf C}^d$ which behave asymptotically like Fekete arrays, has been well-studied, albeit much more recently in dimensions $d>1$. Here we show that one can allow a more flexible definition where the points in the array need not lie in $K$. Our results, which work in the general setting of weighted pluripotential theory, rely heavily, in the multidimensional setting, on the ground-breaking work of Berman, Boucksom and Nystrom.

Abstract:For $h>0$ and positive integers $m$, $d$, such that $m>d/2$, we study non-stationary interpolation at the points of the scaled grid $h\mathbb{Z}^d$ via the Matérn kernel $\Phi_{m,d}$---the fundamental solution of $(1-\Delta)^m$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We prove that the Lebesgue constants of the corresponding interpolation operators are uniformly bounded as $h\to0$ and deduce the convergence rate $O(h^{2m})$ for the scaled interpolation scheme. We also provide convergence results for approximation with Matérn and related compactly supported polyharmonic kernels.

Abstract:We give explicit formulas and asymptotics for the distribution of the index of the Brownian loop in the following geometrical settings: the complex projective line from which two points have been removed; the complex hyperbolic line from which one point has been removed; the odd dimensional spheres from which a great hypersphere has been removed; and the complex anti-de Sitter spaces. Our analysis is based on the geometry of the Hopf and anti-de Sitter fibrations, and on the relationship between winding and area forms.

Abstract:We investigate the equivalence of relative Faber-Krahn inequalities and the conjunction of Gaussian upper heat kernel bounds and volume doubling on large scales on graphs. For the normalizing measure, we obtain their equivalence up to constants by imposing comparability of small balls and the vertex degree at their centers. Removing this comparability assumption on the cost of a local regularity condition entering the equivalence and allowing for a variable dimension lead to a further generalization. The variable dimension converges to the doubling dimension for increasing ball radius. If the counting measure or arbitrary measures are considered, the local regularity condition contains the vertex degree. Furthermore, correction functions for the Gaussian, doubling, and Faber-Krahn dimension depending on the vertex degree are introduced. For the Gaussian and doubling, the variable correction functions always tend to one at infinity. Moreover, the variable Faber-Krahn dimension can be related to the doubling dimension and the vertex degree growth.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to a generalization of the well-known Fekete-Szegö type coefficients problem for holomorphic functions of a complex variable onto holomorphic functions of several variables. The considerations concern three families of such functions f, which are bounded, having positive real part and which Temljakov transform Lf has positive real part, respectively. The main result arise some sharp estimates of the Minkowski balance of a combination of 2-homogeneous and the square of 1-homogeneous polynomials occurred in power series expansion of functions from aforementioned families.
Eventual tightness of projective dimension growth bounds: quadratic in the degree

Abstract:In projective dimension growth results, one bounds the number of rational points of height at most $H$ on an irreducible hypersurface in $\mathbb P^n$ of degree $d>3$ by $C(n)d^2 H^{n-1}(\log H)^{M(n)}$, where the quadratic dependence in $d$ has been recently obtained by Binyamini, Cluckers and Kato in 2024 [1]. For these bounds, it was already shown by Castryck, Cluckers, Dittmann and Nguyen in 2020 [3] that one cannot do better than a linear dependence in $d$. In this paper we show that, for the mentioned projective dimension growth bounds, the quadratic dependence in $d$ is eventually tight when $n$ grows. More precisely the upper bounds cannot be better than $c(n)d^{2-2/n} H^{n-1}$ in general. Note that for affine dimension growth (for affine hypersurfaces of degree $d$, satisfying some extra conditions), the dependence on $d$ is also quadratic by [1], which is already known to be optimal by [3]. Our projective case thus complements the picture of tightness for dimension growth bounds for hypersurfaces.

Abstract:Abstract Bounding the number of rational points of height at most $H$ on irreducible algebraic plane curves of degree $d$ has been an intense topic of investigation since the work by Bombieri and Pila. In this paper we establish optimal dependence on $d$ by showing the upper bound $C d^{2} H^{2/d} (\log H)^{\kappa }$ with some absolute constants $C$ and $\kappa $. This bound is optimal with respect to both $d$ and $H$, except for the constants $C$ and $\kappa $. This answers a question raised by Salberger, leading to a simplified proof of his results on the uniform dimension growth conjectures of Heath-Brown and Serre, and where at the same time we replace the $H^{\varepsilon }$ factor by a power of $\log H$. The main strength of our approach comes from the combination of a new, efficient form of smooth parametrizations of algebraic curves with a century-old criterion of Pólya, which allows us to save one extra power of $d$ compared with the standard approach using Bézout’s theorem.

Abstract:We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a given set of positive real numbers to be the dihedral angles of a hyperbolic n -simplex in this note. This answers a question of W. Fenchel raised in his book, Elementary Geometry in Hyperbolic Space, (De Gruyter, Berlin, 1989, p. 174) where he obtained some necessary conditions for which six numbers have to satisfy in order to be the dihedral angles of a hyperbolic tetrahedron. We also present a simple proof of the known necessary and sufficient condition for the dihedral angles of Euclidean n -simplexes.

Abstract:The Banach isometric conjecture asserts that a normed space with all of its $k$-dimensional subspaces isometric, where $k\geq 2$, is Euclidean. The first case of $k=2$ is classical, established by Auerbach, Mazur and Ulam using an elegant topological argument. We refine their method to arrive at a stable version of their result: if all $2$-dimensional subspaces are almost isometric, then the space is almost Euclidean. Furthermore, we show that a $2$-dimensional surface, which is not a torus or a Klein bottle, equipped with a near-monochromatic Finsler metric, is approximately Riemannian. The stability is quantified explicitly using the Banach-Mazur distance.

Abstract:The recently introduced Degree Preserving Growth model (Nature Physics, DOI:<a class="link-https link-external" data-doi="10.1038/s41567-021-01417-7" href="https://doi.org/10.1038/s41567-021-01417-7" rel="external noopener nofollow">https://doi.org/10.1038/s41567-021-01417-7</a>) uses matchings to insert new vertices of prescribed degrees into the current graph of an ever-growing graph sequence. In this paper we are presenting lower bounds on the matching numbers of the graphs in the growth sequence, based on their degree sequence only. We are interested in bounds on maximal/maximum matchings in some realizations (potential matching number), and also on common bounds on all realizations (forcible matching number). Particularly, we prove that whether a degree sequence can be extended with a new degree $2\delta$ is equivalent to the existence of a realization of the original degree sequence with a matching of size $\delta$ that covers the largest $2\delta$ degrees. Second, we estimate the minimum size of both the maximal and the maximum matchings, as determined by the degree sequence, independently of the graphical realization. Furthermore, we also estimate the maximum value of the matching number over all possible realizations for the degree sequence. Along this line we answer a question raised by Biedl, Demaine et. al. Abstract:We study algebraic points of bounded degree on polarized projective varieties. To do so, we refine further the filtration construction and Subspace Theorem approach, for the study of integral points, which has origins in the work of Corvaja-Zannier, Levin, Evertse and Autissier. Our main result shows how a conjecture of H.~P.~Schlickewei implies Second Main Arithmetic Schmidt's Subspace type inequalities for polarized projective varieties and points of bounded degree.

Abstract:The main aim of this article is to prove quantitative spectral inequalities for the Laplacian with Dirichlet boundary conditions. More specifically, we prove sharp quantitative stability for the Faber-Krahn inequality in terms of Newtonian capacities and Hausdorff contents of positive codimension, thus providing an answer to a question posed by De Philippis and Brasco. One of our results asserts that for any bounded domain $\Omega\subset\mathbb R^n$, $n\geq3$, with Lebesgue measure equal to that of the unit ball $B_0$ and whose first eigenvalue is $\lambda_\Omega$, denoting by $\lambda_{B_0}$ the first eigenvalue for the unit ball, for any $a\in (0,1)$ it holds $$\lambda_\Omega - \lambda_{B_0} \geq C(a) \,\inf_B \bigg(\sup_{t\in (0,1)} \frac1{H^{n-1}(\partial ((1-t) B))} \int_{\partial ((1-t) B)} \frac{\operatorname{Cap}_{n-2}(B(x,atr_B)\setminus \Omega)}{(t\,r_B)^{n-3}}\,dH^{n-1}(x)\bigg)^2,$$ where the infimum is taken over all balls $B$ with the same Lebesgue measure as $\Omega$ and $\operatorname{Cap}_{n-2}$ is the Newtonian capacity of homogeneity $n-2$. In fact, this holds for bounded subdomains of the sphere and the hyperbolic space, as well. In a second result, we also apply the new Faber-Krahn type inequalities to quantify the Hayman-Friedland inequality about the characteristics of disjoint domains in the unit sphere. Thirdly, we propose a natural extension of Carleson's $\varepsilon^2$-conjecture to higher dimensions in terms of a square function involving the characteristics of certain spherical domains, and we prove the necessity of the finiteness of such square function in the tangent points via the Alt-Caffarelli-Friedman monotonicity formula. Finally, we answer in the negative a question posed by Allen, Kriventsov and Neumayer in connection to rectifiability and the positivity set of the ACF monotonicity formula.

Abstract:We study polynomial growth holomorphic functions and forms on complete gradient shrinking Ricci solitons. By relating to the spectral data of the $f$-Laplacian, we show that the dimension of the space of polynomial growth holomorphic functions or holomorphic $(p,0)$-forms are finite. In particular, a sharp dimension estimate for the space of linear growth holomorphic functions was obtained. Under some additional curvature assumption, we prove a sharp estimate for the frequency of polynomial growth holomorphic functions, which was used to obtain dimension upper bound as a power function of the polynomial order.

Abstract:In the first part of this paper, we establish some results around generalized Borel's Theorem. As an application, in the second part, we construct example of smooth surface of degree $d\geq 19$ in $\mathbb{CP}^3$ whose complements is hyperbolically embedded in $\mathbb{CP}^3$. This improves the previous construction of Shirosaki where the degree bound $d=31$ was gave. In the last part, for a Fermat-Waring type hypersurface $D$ in $\mathbb{CP}^n$ defined by the homogeneous polynomial \[ \sum_{i=1}^m h_i^d, \] where $m,n,d$ are positive integers with $m\geq 3n-1$ and $d\geq m^2-m+1$, where $h_i$ are homogeneous generic linear forms on $\mathbb{C}^{n+1}$, for a nonconstant holomorphic function $f\colon\mathbb{C}\rightarrow\mathbb{CP}^n$ whose image is not contained in the support of $D$, we establish a Second Main Theorem type estimate: \[ \big(d-m(m-1)\big)\,T_f(r)\leq N_f^{[m-1]}(r,D)+S_f(r). \] This quantifies the hyperbolicity result due to Shiffman-Zaidenberg and Siu-Yeung.
